Downloadable! This study looks at the current biotechnology and bio safety situation in the Philippines. It assesses whether the countrys biotechnology organizations are in a position to effectively perform bio safety regulation, protect intellectual property rights and respond to the accelerating pace of international biotechnology product development. Based on a mixture of primary and secondary information, the study finds that biotechnology development is constrained by funding and resources. It also finds that, while bio safety guidelines and practices are relatively strong, there are a number of institutional weaknesses. The study recommends measures to make biotechnology research and development more cost-effective and to improve bio safety in the country. Overall, the report calls for the Philippines to carefully balance the need for biotechnology regulation with the need for innovative biotechnology development.

As a result, international trade and other forms of exchange are considerably inhibited, leading to reduced returns for those investing in the technology and, hence, less investment in R&D for agricultural biotechnology. The latter means that biotechnology cannot fully contribute to meeting the food security challenges of the next four decades. The current work deals with the biotechnological synthesis of alpha-ketomethylvalerate (KMV) with Corynebacterium glutamicum. KMV together with the two other branched-chain alpha-keto acids alpha-ketoisovalerate (KIV) and alpha-ketoisocaproate (KIC) is used as a pharmaceutical agent and also as ingredient of functional food. So far KMV has only been produced by chemical synthesis and the aim of this work was to initiate the development of a fermentative KMV production. When C. glutamicum was cultured in the presence of KMV the growth rate and the final cell density were significantly reduced. The experiments also revealed that the branched-chain alpha-keto acids are degraded by C. glutamicum during growth. Specific branched-chain alpha-keto acid converting enzymes could not be identified in C. glutamicum. Research work that began in 2013 has been able to establish, optimise and standardise the cultivation of the soil bacterium and the biotechnological process for producing and isolating bacterial alginates. By working specifically on optimising the bacteriums alginate biosynthesis, the researchers succeeded in improving the composition, and therefore the properties and yield of the alginate. This meant that they could make customised alginates that are particularly suitable for producing fibres for use in medical products. In this paper, we address two important issues; namely, consumer preferences for mandatory labeling of products using biotechnology, as well as consumer response toward three different types of genetically modified processes (biotechnology applications to increase the nutritional content of potatoes, increase potato flavor, and a decrease in pesticide use). We identify socio-demographic characteristics that affect consumer preference for mandatory labeling as well as the support level that might be associated with biotechnology techniques that could improve upon potato characteristics identified as important by the consumer.

Organo-mineral nutrient sources are promising soil amendments for sustainable crop production in Nigeria. A field experiment was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Cross River University of Technology Obubra during the 2016 cropping season. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen (N) and amended rice mill waste (RMW) on some soil chemical properties and yield of maize (Zea mays L.). The treatments consisted of 10 kg ha-1 RMW as control and 10 kg ha-1 of RMW amended with 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 kg N ha-1. The 6 treatments were replicated 3 times under RCBD with each experimental plot size measuring 4 × 3 m. All the treatments including control increased the chemical properties of the soil over the initial soil properties including total N, available P, SOM, pH and the exch. Cations; Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+. The study was designed to evaluate the ethanolic extract acaricide action from Pouteria gardneriana Radlk specie adsorbed in chitosan nanoparticles for controlled release against Riphicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Leaves of P. gardneriana Radlk were collected, air-dried, ground and extracted with ethanol. Chitosan nanospheres were obtained by the phase inversion method. Conductometric titration, UV-Vis and FTIR analysis were conducted with the materials to evaluate the chitosan anchoring ability. In vitro test was performed using engorged females for each treatment, which consisted of the control, raw extract and three treatments diluted, with increasing concentrations of 0.2, 0.4 and 1%. The most effectiveness extract was for 0.4% concentration by observing reduction in the eggs mass compared to control group. I am a young researcher in the field of Plant Biotechnology. I belong to University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. I did my Masters degree in Microbiology from Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (MMG), University of the Punjab, Lahore in 2011. I commenced one-year research and submitted a comprehensive thesis entitled Isolation and characterization of Azospirillum spp. from rhizosphere of some grasses. Here, I conducted lab experiments on soil microbiology and plant-microbe interactions. I proceeded to the Centre of excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) where I obtained her MPhil degree in 2015 and did research work in Risk assessment of Bt-cotton in non-target Soil microbes.
