S3QL: A distributed domain specific language for controlled semantic integration of life sciences data | BMC Bioinformatics |...
In order to address the information management needs of Life Scientists, the practice of Linked Data standards must be coupled with the implementation of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs), a view also espoused by the W3C, where the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) has been recently proposed as a standard [38, 39]. In previous work we proposed the design principles of a KOS, the Simple Sloppy Semantic Database (S3DB) [15, 16, 40]. The S3DB core model is, much like SKOS, task-independent and light-weight. Implementation of the S3DB Core Model and operators resulted in a prototype that has been validated and tested by Life Scientists to address pressing data management needs or, in particular, as a controlled Read-Write Linked Data system [31, 41-43]. S3DB was shown to include the minimum set of features required to support the management of experimental and analytic results by Life Sciences experts while making use of Linked Data best practices such as HTTP URI, ...

Wikimedia Blog » Blog Archive » Establishing Wikidata as the central hub for linked open life science data
We are excited to announce that the first step on this path has been completed!. Milestone 1 complete: Wikidata entities for all human genes. We have just finished adding entities for all (~40,000) human gene entries that contain a label in the Entrez Gene database [3]. We consider this a first step in making Wikidata a central repository for biological identifiers and their mappings to related resources. Each gene now has a stable identifier (e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18039760) from Wikidata that links to other key identifier systems such as Entrez Gene. These are the first seeds of the garden of knowledge that we hope to sow.. We added Entrez Gene to Wikidata in two development sprints (see here and here). The final bot was split into two subtasks. The first being a stub creator, where for each Entrez Gene entry, a stub was created. This stub consisted of the title of the gene, its aliases, its Entrez Gene identifier (P351) it being a subclass of a gene (P279) and that it was found ...

As scientific methodologies become more refined, scientists are able to manipulate even the most detailed biological processes. Eventually, this will allow them to understand complex diseases and hopefully find cures for them. Nanomedicine One of the most astounding fields of biological science nowadays is that of nanomedicine. Nanomedicine involves applying nanotechnology to biological processes. Nanotechnology involves working with matter on the scale of atoms or molecules - in other words: very small. Applications of nanomedicine involve finding ways to deliver drugs that make them more available to the body. For example, by using nanoengineering, a drug can be targeted to a specific molecular target and delivered there with precision. This is far more efficient than the current method of getting a drug into the bloodstream then just ...

Lokey Center - Lorry I. Lokey Interdisciplinary Center for Life Sciences & Engineering
The Lorry I. Lokey Interdisciplinary Center for Life Sciences and Engineering was launched in 2006. Mr. Lokeys monumental gift to the Technion , and the vision behind this- stewarded by Nobel Laureate Prof. Aaron Ciechanover has made possible the establishment of the The Lorry I. Lokey Interdisciplinary Center for Life Sciences and Engineering.. Engineers and scientists can create scientific advances to the extent or in proportion to the amount and sophistication of their tools. Traditionally scientists explored and experimented and engineers created designed and built tools but these two fields are merging and there are many promising tools coming out of multidisciplinary projects. It was long recognized by Technion management that engineering principles and technologies would eventually be applied to the life sciences. Over the past several decades, the merging of engineering and life sciences has led to new ways of looking at old problems and life sciences have also influenced ...

NR0B2 Polyclonal Antibody - Abbkine - Antibodies, proteins, biochemicals, assay kits for life science research
Rabbit Anti-NR0B2 Polyclonal Antibody,Nuclear receptor subfamily 0 group B member 2; Orphan nuclear receptor SHP; Small heterodimer partner,The protein encoded by NR0B2 (Nuclear Receptor Subfamily 0 Group B Member 2) is an unusual orphan receptor that contains a putative ligand-binding domain but lacks a conventional DNA-binding domain. NR0B2 product is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor family, a group of transcription factors regulated by small hydrophobic hormones, a subset of which do not have known ligands and are referred to as orphan nuclear receptors. The protein has been shown to interact with retinoid and thyroid hormone receptors, inhibiting their ligand-dependent transcriptional activation.

Perspectives for the History of Life Sciences - New themes, new sources, new approaches | H-Soz-Kult. Kommunikation und...
There are themes in the biological and biomedical sciences that, for good reasons, play a disproportionate role in the historiography, such as evolutionary theory, genetics, molecular biology or medical bacteriology. In recent years, the history of the life-sciences has widened its scope and looked beyond these undoubtedly important developments. And yet, there are still many areas in the biological sciences and many aspects of medicine that have not received the attention they deserve, such as, to name only a few, plant physiology, agricultural sciences, microbiology, research in metabolism, or the dissemination of biological technologies. More recent developments in the life sciences, those from the 1970s and 80s, have hardly been studied at all. The exploration of these, in particular, would greatly benefit from a closer connection between historiographies of the biological sciences, medicine and technology - as well as from an enhanced dialogue with philosophical and social studies of ...
