In order to address the information management needs of Life Scientists, the practice of Linked Data standards must be coupled with the implementation of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs), a view also espoused by the W3C, where the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) has been recently proposed as a standard [38, 39]. In previous work we proposed the design principles of a KOS, the Simple Sloppy Semantic Database (S3DB) [15, 16, 40]. The S3DB core model is, much like SKOS, task-independent and light-weight. Implementation of the S3DB Core Model and operators resulted in a prototype that has been validated and tested by Life Scientists to address pressing data management needs or, in particular, as a controlled Read-Write Linked Data system [31, 41-43]. S3DB was shown to include the minimum set of features required to support the management of experimental and analytic results by Life Sciences experts while making use of Linked Data best practices such as HTTP URI, ...

We are excited to announce that the first step on this path has been completed!. Milestone 1 complete: Wikidata entities for all human genes. We have just finished adding entities for all (~40,000) human gene entries that contain a label in the Entrez Gene database [3]. We consider this a first step in making Wikidata a central repository for biological identifiers and their mappings to related resources. Each gene now has a stable identifier (e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18039760) from Wikidata that links to other key identifier systems such as Entrez Gene. These are the first seeds of the garden of knowledge that we hope to sow.. We added Entrez Gene to Wikidata in two development sprints (see here and here). The final bot was split into two subtasks. The first being a stub creator, where for each Entrez Gene entry, a stub was created. This stub consisted of the title of the gene, its aliases, its Entrez Gene identifier (P351) it being a subclass of a gene (P279) and that it was found ...

Exeter was an excellent choice of university for me, as it offers a city experience with both the sea and countryside just minutes away. Campus is attractive and conveniently close to town, if a little hilly!. The Biological Sciences course is both diverse and flexible, offering a wide range of module choices in the 2nd and 3rd years. The highlight of the course was the independent research project in my final year. This project was based in one of the department laboratories and gave me the opportunity to work alongside staff and get a feel for what research is really like. Reading Biological Sciences also enabled me to get involved in the Excited about science Sutton Trust project, running science workshops with year 11 students from schools in Exeter. Throughout my time at university I have become involved in the local community, working with Community Actions Kids Club as well as a local Guide unit. My involvement with the Exeter Student Ambassador Scheme enabled me to develop a variety ...
The Body in Parts: Disease and the biomedical sciences in the 20th century. In the 20th century, Western societies have experienced a significant and humbling transformation in the character and understanding of disease with the rise of chronic disease, the decline of acute disease, and the evolving understanding of the mechanisms of diseases of civilization - from many cancers to cardiovascular disease and AIDS. This essay provides an overview of this transformation in disease, and explains how the history and philosophy of science can illuminate this 20th century transition. Moreover, the essay provides an argument for how a study of the biomedical sciences in America can demonstrate the ways in which science, medicine, and culture have interacted to address these evolving problems of disease in our time. Such a project would focus on four areas of the biomedical sciences: immunology, oncology, genetics, and anesthesiology. Part one of the essay provides an overview of the relationship of ...

Am I a life scientist or an IT data manager? Thats the question many researchers are asking themselves in todays data-driven life sciences organizations.. Whether it is a bench scientist analyzing a genomic sequence or an M.D. exploring biomarkers and a patients genomic variants to develop a personalized treatment, researchers are spending a great amount of time searching for, accessing, manipulating, analyzing, and visualizing data.. Organizations supporting such research efforts are trying to make it easier to perform these tasks without the user needing extensive IT expertise and skills. This mission is not easy.. Focus on the data. Modern life sciences data analysis requirements are vastly different than they were just a handful of years ago.. In the past, once data was created, it was stored, analyzed soon after, and then archived to tape or another long-term medium. Today, not only is more data is being generated, but also the need to re-analyze that data means that it must be retained ...

All compounds, whether natural or synthetic, can be chemically combined to create certain new desired characteristics without compromising too much to their individual features. Bioconjugation, as its name suggests, is the process of forming a stable covalent link between two biomolecules.. "We make one biomolecule join to another via chemical or biological means, purposely forming a unique new complex that consists of both molecules linked together. The other component might be also a biomolecule or a small molecule, or a polymer," says Dr. Claudia Polley, chief scientific officer of BOC Sciences bioconjugation research team. "The whole process is ...

Biomedical sciences are the foundation of knowledge for all health care professionals. Unlike most undergraduate programs, curriculum at National University focuses solely on health care-related courses. Instead of studying plant or animal sciences not applicable to a health care career, your focus will be on human biology.. To further your understanding of the human body, biomedical science students also get the chance to work on real human cadavers. In Anatomy l, students learn about the musculoskeletal systems, muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and skin. Anatomy II covers the chest and abdomen, lungs, heart, gastro-intestinal tract, and reproductive system. Students enrolled in the anatomy courses spend two hours each week in our gross-anatomy lab. They examine multiple cadavers to observe structures that they are discussing in classroom lectures. This also gives them a chance to observe differences between one body and another.. In addition to basic science courses in microbiology, ...

Headlines on biosecurity, stem cell research, and drug development suggest that the life sciences are expanding rapidly, but this is not reflected in salary growth for US life scientists, which has remained relatively stagnant. The consumer price index has risen 3.0% since July 2003, but salaries for life scientists have marked only a 2.3% increase, according to The Scientists 2004 salary survey. Some cities, sectors, and specializations in the life sciences posted slight increases in income thi
