Objectives: Dynamic changes in psychophysiological arousal are directly expressed in the sympathetic innervation of the skin. This activity can be measured as tonic and phasic fluctuations in electrodermal activity [Galvanic Skin Response (GSR)/skin conductance]. Biofeedback training can enable an individual to gain voluntary control over this autonomic response and its central correlates. Theoretically, control of psychophysiological arousal may be harnessed as a therapy for epilepsy, to mitigate pre-ictal states. Evidence is accumulating for the clinical efficacy of GSR biofeedback training in the management of drug resistant epilepsy. In this review, we analyse current evidence of efficacy with GSR biofeedback and evaluate the methodology of each study. Method: We searched published literature pertaining to interventional studies of GSR biofeedback for epilepsy, through MEDLINE and Cochrane databases (1950-2018). Using percentage seizure reduction as an indicator of therapeutic efficacy induced by

Biofeedback has evolved from a fascination in the 1960s and 70s to a mainstream methodology today for treating certain medical conditions and improving human performance. This evolution has been driven by years of scientific research demonstrating that the mind and body are connected, and that people can be taught to harness the power of this connection to change physical activity and improve health and function. Public interest in biofeedback is growing, and with it the need for a clear answer to the question, what is biofeedback? The leading professional organizations representing the field have answered with the following standard definition.. Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately feed back ...

Reprinted with permission of Greenwood Publishing Group. This book is available from AAPBs Bookstore or from Greenwood at http://info.greenwood,com/books/o313291/0313291586.html Abstract : Chapter Ten summarizes the Biofeedback movement, which serves as the arena where high tech meets the higher states of consciousness. The concept of biofeedback was introduced at a conference in Santa Monica in 1969. The image of electronic equipment guiding human beings to a greater awareness and control over their own physiology and consciousness appealed to both white coated experimental scientists and the white robed gurus of the higher consciousness movement. Biofeedback encourages the humanistic dream that the human being can become creator of his or her own ever perfecting health and nature. The Birth of Biofeedback: ...
Purpose: To assess whether EMG directed biofeedback therapy or Botulinum toxin type A injection of the levator ani muscles has any effect on pain from the levator ani syndrome, and, in addition, to what extent either treatment is superior to the other in terms of anorectal physiologic measurements, and quality of life.. Study Design: Randomized, prospective, unblinded double-armed study with crossover.. Methodology: Female subjects, aged 18 and over, with painful levator ani muscle spasm for at least one month duration will be randomized to receive either biofeedback therapy or Botulinum toxin type A injection. After randomization they will all undergo visual analog pain scoring, anorectal manometry, colonoscopy (if clinically indicated), and self-reported SF-36 quality of life measurement. Each patient will also complete numerical pain scale scoring, an SF-36, and a satisfaction questionnaire at each treatment visit and follow-up visit. Patients will submit these by mail. Identification numbers ...

Here are handouts and recordings for the seventh Autogenic Training session. The initial Autogenic relaxation training page gives introductory details of this method. In the face-to-face trainings that I run, I would typically start the two hour class by practising last times Autogenic Training exercise together - in this case it would be the sixth sessions belly focus. I would then collect the trainees record sheets and go round the group looking at how each individuals practice had been going and trouble shooting/sharing experiences. This group discussion time can be very valuable. It brings up all kinds of interesting points, encourages people to interact and help each other, and reinforces the sense that we are all on this learning/exploring journey together.. At this seventh training session, I focus on two main themes. The first is to complete the full standard Autogenic Training sequence by adding in a focus on the forehead. The phrase I teach is Forehead cool and clear. I usually ...

Biofeedback has been shown to be highly effective the treatment of stress urinary incontinence when used in conjunction with pelvic floor physical therapy under the instruction of a healthcare provider. Home biofeedback has not been well studied, even though several FDA cleared devices are on the market and available for patients to purchase. It is unclear if the biofeedback improves womens urinary incontinence, or if the increased contact with a healthcare provider causes the improvement.. Using a home biofeedback device, a woman places the device in her vagina and contracts the muscles of her pelvic floor to improve the strength, which can improve or cure incontinence when performed over time. Typically it takes 3 months for benefit to be seen. ...

Ankle joint quasi-stiffness is an aggregate measure of the interaction between triceps surae muscle stiffness and Achilles tendon stiffness. This interaction may be altered due to age-related changes in the structural properties and functional behavior of the Achilles tendon and triceps surae muscles. The authors hypothesized that, due to a more compliant of Achilles tendon, older adults would exhibit lower ankle joint quasi-stiffness than young adults during walking and during isolated contractions at matched triceps surae muscle activations. The authors also hypothesized that, independent of age, triceps surae muscle stiffness and ankle joint quasi-stiffness would increase with triceps surae muscle activation. The authors used conventional gait analysis in one experiment and, in another, electromyographic biofeedback and in vivo ultrasound imaging applied during isolated contractions. The authors found no difference in ankle joint quasi-stiffness between young and older adults during walking. ...
spinal cord injuries. Biofeedback has been used to successfully treat a number of disorders and their symptoms, including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Raynauds syndrome, epilepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), migraine headaches, anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury, and sleep disorders. Illnesses that may be triggered at least in part by stress are also targeted by biofeedback therapy. Certain types of headaches, high blood pressure, bruxism (teeth grinding), post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse, and some anxiety disorders may be treated successfully by teaching patients the ability to relax and release both muscle and mental tension. Biofeedback is often just one part of a comprehensive treatment program for some of these disorders. NASA has used biofeedback techniques to treat astronauts who suffer from severe space sickness, during which the autonomic nervous system is disrupted. ...

Behavioral treatment of urinary incontinence was given to 39 elderly outpatients; 19 had stress incontinence, 12 detrusor motor instability, and 8 urge incontinence without instability. Biofeedback involving the bladder and sphincter was used to teach selective control of sphincter muscles or voluntary inhibition of detrusor contractions. Traditional behavioral methods used included habit training to gradually increase the voiding interval and relaxation training to cope with the urge to void. After an average 3.5 training sessions, patients with stress incontinence reduced the frequency of incontinent episodes an average of 82% (range, 55% to 100%). Patients with detrusor motor instability showed an average 85% improvement (range, 39% to 100%), and patients with urge incontinence reduced incontinence an average of 94% (range, 83% to 100%). Furthermore, 13 of the patients achieved total continence, and 19 had fewer than one accident per week after treatment. ...

I have been undergoing therapy with the LENYO CellCom biofeedback BRT device for pain resulting from fibromyalgia, an injury to both my neck and back in a car accident, and a facial motor tick. I had the tick for about two years along with the fibromyalgia, and I had the back and neck pain for seven years. In order to function each day I took pain medication and a sleep aid.. After two sessions with the LENYO CellCom, my facial tick decreased by 90% and continued to lessen with each session until it was completely gone. Friends noticed immediately that the tick had greatly decreased. Additionally, after only sessions, I realized I was not in need of a daily sleep aid and I was able to reduce my daily pain medications by 50%.. I felt no pain and no discomfort during the BRT sessions -it was like taking a nap. Now I sleep well, and I am able to participate in activities I was unable to enjoy for several years. The tick is now completely gone and I am no longer embarrassed to go out with friends ...

Exaggerated reactions to stressful situations.. Adrenal fatigue is classed as a modern condition due our busy lifestyles and the higher amount of stress present for most of us. While this condition is recognised by the World Health Organisation as common, most medical professionals are reluctant to confirm the existence of adrenal fatigue and many will tell you it doesnt exist. This is where Kinesiology comes into play. We have a set of Test your Stress questions and body observation techniques which help us to identify your stress levels and if you are indeed suffering from adrenal fatigue.. As Kinesiology incorporates your physical, emotional, mental, hormonal, nutritional, biochemical and neurological systems we are able to treat adrenal fatigue as a whole body issue and ascertain where the stress started in the first place. As we use a monitoring muscle to test the biofeedback system within your body. It is your body that is indicating where the imbalance is located and what it would ...

Spontaneously active motor units and units that could only be slowly and weakly activated were observed in these subjects, in addition to units that were voluntarily activated normally. This suggests a considerable overlap of surviving motor neurons to a single muscle that are below, near or above the level of a lesion. Despite the common occurrence of polyphasic potentials and other signs of neuromuscular reinnervation, the average twitch tension of single motor units in hand muscles of quadriplegic subjects was not significantly different ...
Childhood migraine is a prevalent disorder seen in pediatric practice. Preliminary uncontrolled reports evaluating skin temperature biofeedback with autogenic training have suggested that it may be a useful intervention for childhood migraine. The present study used a controlled group outcome design to further evaluate the effectiveness of skin temperature feedback with autogenic training and home practice. Subjects were 28 children, ages 7 to 16, 14 males and 14 females. After receiving a physicians diagnosis of migraine a second diagnosis of migraine was made by the experimenter. Children were matched by baseline headache intensity, sex and age and then randomly assigned to either a waiting-list control or treatment group. Six dependent measures of headache activity were obtained from weekly headache records that the child and parents kept during baseline, treatment and follow-up. Assessment of ability to increase skin temperature without feedback was made at pre- and post-treatment sessions. The

Purpose: We propose a novel lung functional imaging method to determine the spatial distribution of xenon (Xe) gas in a single inhalation as a measure of regional ventilation. We compare Xe-CT ventilation to single-photon emission CT (SPECT) ventilation, which is the current clinical reference. Regional lung ventilation information may be useful for the diagnosis and monitoring of pulmonary diseases such as COPD, radiotherapy planning, and assessing the progression of toxicity after radiation therapy. Methods: In an IRB-approved clinical study, Xe-CT and SPECT ventilation scans were acquired for three patients including one patient with severe emphysema and two lung cancer patients treated with radiotherapy. For Xe- CT, we acquired two breath-hold single energy CT images of the entire lung with inspiration of 100% O2 and a mixture of 70% Xe and 30% O2, respectively. A video biofeedback system was used to achieve reproducible breath-holds. We used deformable image registration to align the ...
Both men and women can experience pelvic floor weakness over time. As with other muscles, people can perform exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles, improving bowel and bladder control. If youre having trouble doing Kegel exercises, dont be shy about asking for help. Your doctor or other healthcare provider can give you important feedback to help you learn to isolate and exercise the correct muscles. In some cases, weighted vaginal cones or biofeedback may help.. To use a vaginal cone, you insert it into your vagina and use contractions of the pelvic muscle to hold it in place during your daily activities. During a biofeedback session, your doctor or other healthcare provider inserts a pressure sensor into your vagina or rectum. As you relax and contract your pelvic floor muscles, a monitor will measure and display pelvic floor activity.. Pelvic floor exercises offer many benefits to women, including a lower risk of vaginal prolapse, better bowel and bladder control, and better recovery ...

If a back injury is suspected, it is vital for the cricket player to rest and refrain from further play until seeing a medical doctor for examination. A fracture to the lower back may not appear obvious. Numbness and weakness to a muscle may not be from overstrain, but could be from nerve damage. A physician may use pressure biofeedback devices to stabilise the muscles in the back and refer an injured player for X-ray, MRI scan, or ultrasound of the lower back to identify damage and treatments. If ligaments or tendons are torn, or if a fracture is present, a back brace may need to be worn and corrective surgery may be recommended. Steroid injections and anti-inflammatory medication with therapeutic massage can reduce pain and aid recovery. A physiotherapist can assist with restoring strength to muscles and bones through corrective exercise therapy, diet plan and products to support the back.. ...
It is possible that the ADHD behaviour improves with the neurofeedback, in particular for patients who are in the active group. This is what was found in the previous study. However, it cannot be guaranteed that patients get better as this is a research study and there is no guarantee that every child gets better with the neurofeedback treatment. Previous studies have shown that some children improve a lot after neurofeedback and other children do not improve that much. Given that we have two types of neurofeedback training, the active group who receive the optimal neurofeedback and the other group that receive sham (i.e. dummy) neurofeedback (not real neurofeedback, but like a placebo), it is expected that patients only get better if they are in the group of children who do the active neurofeedback. If they are in the group of children who do the sham neurofeedback, only small changes are expected, which they may not notice. Participation in the study will help develop better treatment in the ...

WebMD says that, although prescribing drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall are the most common way of managing ADHD - and bring improvement in about 80% of patients, says the American Psychiatric Association - they are not without problems. Many children taking them suffer side effects such as sleep problems, weight loss, jitters, and stomach upset, and nearly half of those with some types of ADHD dont respond to the drugs at all. Some experts are also concerned with their long-term use. A study, published in the December, 2002, issue of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, indicates that ADHD kids who had weekly sessions of traditional biofeedback therapy for a year were able to reduce or eliminate their medication - and maintained the same level of improvement in focus and concentration as when they had been on drug therapy ...

The present study investigated whether motivation and augmented feedback processing explain the effect of an incidental choice on motor learning, and examined whether motivation and feedback processing generally predict learning. Accordingly, participants were assigned to one of two groups, choice or yoked, then asked to practice a nondominant arm beanbag toss. The choice group was allowed to choose the color of the beanbag with which they made the toss, whereas the yoked group was not. Motor learning was determined by delayed-posttest accuracy and precision. Motivation and augmented feedback processing were indexed via the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and electroencephalography, respectively. We predicted the choice group would exhibit greater motor learning, motivation, and augmented feedback processing, and that the latter two variables would predict learning. Results showed that an incidental choice failed to enhance motor learning, motivation, or augmented feedback processing. In ...

Social neuroscience benefits from the experimental manipulation of neuronal activity. One possible manipulation, neurofeedback, is an operant conditioning-based technique in which individuals sense, interact with, and manage their own physiological and mental states. Neurofeedback has been applied to a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, as well as to treat sub-clinical symptoms, and even to enhance performance in healthy populations. Despite growing interest, there persists a level of distrust and/or bias in the medical and research communities in the USA toward neurofeedback and other functional interventions. As a result, neurofeedback has been largely ignored, or disregarded within social neuroscience. We propose a systematic, empirically-based approach for assessing the effectiveness, and utility of neurofeedback. To that end, we use the term perturbative physiologic plasticity to suggest that biological systems function as an integrated whole that can be perturbed and guided, either directly or

One of the unfortunate aspects of aging is tooth wear. Depending on your diet, years of biting and chewing can cause enamel along the biting surfaces to erode. Your body also cant replace enamel - so when it comes to teeth its not a question of if, but how much your teeth will wear during your lifetime.. To make matters worse, certain conditions cause tooth wear to accelerate. Teeth softened by acids or tooth decay, for example, erode faster than healthier teeth. So will grinding habits: often fueled by stress, these include chewing on hard items like nails, pencils or bobby pins.. You may also grind your teeth, usually while you sleep. Normal biting and chewing produces pressure of about 13 to 23 pounds per square inch: grinding your teeth at night can well exceed this, even up into the hundreds of pounds.. There are some things we can do to alleviate these issues. For clenching and grinding habits, one primary step is to address stress through counseling or biofeedback therapy. For nighttime ...
think about heaviness and warmth in the limbs. These constitute the first two exercises of atogenic training. Four other instructions, relating to heart rate, breathing, warmth in the abdomen and coolness of the forehead, were added to form the six standard exercises. Later Sshultz and Thomas developed the personal and motivational formulae (at first known as intentional formulae), which are tailored to the individual experience, and involve repitition of therapeutic suggestions, designed, for example, to correct negative patterns of thought.. CLINICAL EVIDENCE Recent RCTs or systematic reviews suggest that autogenic training can alleviate headaches in a variety of clinical situations. A meta-analysis of all controlled trials reached positive conclusions for some conditions (hypertension, asthma, intestinal diseases, glaucoma and eczema) but made no assessment of the quality of the studies. One RCT (n=18) suggested that autogenic training may be a useful adjunctive therapy for complex regional ...

Progressive relaxation: Since muscle tension accompanies anxiety, relaxing the muscles will reduce anxiety. Progressive relaxation focuses on the difference between the feeling of tension and relaxation. This technique involves alternatively tensing (10 seconds) and relaxing muscles (20 seconds) in different parts of the body. Start from your toes and work to the crown of your head. For example, to relax your hands make a tight fist in both of your hands until you cant tighten any more, concentrate on the tension you feel. Let go and let your hand relax. Focus on the sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach ...

The exercise is quite difficult (because we are not sure that we apply to the right muscle) but by practice it can be done easily anywhere at anytime.. The simplest thing I practiced was by trying to hold during urination/ weeing (some people hold the wind) and identify which muscle is contracted. Then I redo it and feels the same muscle contracted:). From my personal experience, i feel like squeeze and lift sensation. Initial trial I found that I actually hold my breath or pulling up my tummy which is not right. Other mistakes that may happen are tightening buttock or squeezing legs together.. A beginner may try this exercise while laying down then later in any position. Try to hold the muscle in 10 seconds and try 10 times in a row.. Neurofeedback is strongly recommended for clients with a history of relapse after prior attempts at treatment. If you choose this option, you will receive neurofeedback once or twice per day, three to five days per week, during your treatment. Each training session is customized for patients based on the extent of their ability to self-regulate their brainwaves in prior sessions and any current problematic symptoms that they are experiencing. By teaching the brain to work at its fullest capacity, neurofeedback can also increase the effectiveness of other therapies that you receive during your treatment, including EMDR, and other forms of Neurotherapy such as Nexalin Therapy and Light & Sound Neurotherapy. If desired, you can even continue your neurofeedback training at home after discharge, under the guidance and monitoring of Dr. Pigott to ensure that you gain maximum benefit from the therapy.. ...

Why because people really need to understand fully that chemical-foods like coke, chips, Wonder Bread, donuts, chicken nuggets and Captain Crunch are bad for you and that broccoli, spinach, chicken (with the skin on), steak, pork, olives and cucumbers are healthy foods? Sadly, at this point in America, the answer is yes. Thats how successful the brainwashing of incessant marketing has been to convince us to eat unhealthy foods. And, that doesnt bode well for the health of our children and future generations. The vast majority of Americans have no idea what real food is, have no taste for it, wont spend the money on it and, wont feed it to their kids. It is no coincidence that the vast majority of Americans, and their kids, are so sick. The disconnect between our toxic diets and the resulting sickness is stunning with Neurofeedback we see miracles. Tune in as we share how treatment with Neurofeedback help retrain the brain and bring totally

These tips may help:. Avoid possible irritants. Reduce your exposure to things that may make your tinnitus worse. Common examples include loud noises, caffeine and nicotine.. Cover up the noise. In a quiet setting, a fan, soft music or low-volume radio static may help mask the noise from tinnitus.. Manage stress. Stress can make tinnitus worse.
