Westminster-based Myogen Inc.s shares soared Monday after its experimental drug helped patients with a potentially fatal lung disorder in a pivotal trial. A study, one of two needed for U.S. regulatory approval, found that the drug ambrisentan improved patients breathing and slowed worsening of pulmonary arterial hypertension, Myogen said. The once-a-day pill eased shortness of breath, allowing patients to walk farther in a six-minute test, the firm said. Geoffrey Meacham, an analyst at J.P. Morgan Securities Inc., said the results were better than he expected. The findings "clearly position ambrisentan to become a best- in-class oral pulmonary arterial hypertension agent," Meacham wrote in a note to clients. Biochemistry instructors are inundated with various representations from which to choose to depict biochemical phenomena. Because of the immense amount of visual know-how needed to be an expert biochemist in the 21st century, there have been calls for instructors to develop biochemistry students' visual literacy. However, visual literacy has multiple aspects, and determining which area to develop can be quite daunting. Therefore, the goals of this study were to determine what visual literacy skills biochemistry instructors deem to be most important and how instructors develop and assess visual literacy skills in their biochemistry courses. In order to address these goals, a needs assessment was administered to a national sample of biochemistry faculty at four-year colleges and universities. Based on the results of the survey, a cluster analysis was conducted to group instructors into categories based on how they intended to develop visual literacy in their courses. A

In a majority of living organisms, FoF1 ATP synthase performs the fundamental process of ATP synthesis. Despite the simple net reaction formula, ADP + Pi. ATP + H2O, the detailed step-by-step mechanism of the reaction yet remains to be resolved owing to the complexity of this multisubunit enzyme. Based on quantum mechanical computations using recent high resolution X-ray structures, we propose that during ATP synthesis the enzyme first prepares the inorganic phosphate for the gamma P-O-ADP bond-forming step via a double-proton transfer. At this step, the highly conserved alpha S344 side chain plays a catalytic role. The reaction thereafter progresses through another transition state (TS) having a planar PO3- ion configuration to finally form ATP. These two TSs are concluded crucial for ATP synthesis. Hey all... I thought I would start a new series of work inspired by Alien vs Predator. Ive always loved AVP, at least in concept, if not always execution; so I thought I might as well take the time and start some AVP WIPs. Biochemistry test refers to the chemical identification of a particular enzyme or protein in bodily fluid samples like blood or urine.

Although glycoproteins with less than 1% of sialic acid (fibrinogen, lipoproteins, gamma-globulins) interact electrostatically with chondromucoprotein to form insoluble complexes, interaction with glycoproteins containing larger amounts of sialic acid (orosomucoid, urine glycoprotein, seromucoid, fraction VI) was electrostatically impossible. Reasons for this are discussed. 2. The latter glycoproteins interacted with chondromucoprotein after mild acid hydrolysis or neuraminidase treatment, complex-formation being inversely related to their sialic acid content. 3. The analytical goals inferred desirable by a group of clinicians for the imprecisions of a wide range of analytes have been studied by survey. The goals required have not in general become more stringent in the past decade and are not as demanding as those promulgated by laboratory professionals. Clinical biochemistry laboratories can now attain analytical imprecisions which satisfy the general demands of clinicians except for analyses of calcium and of low levels of glucose. The identification of kinetic models for multiphase reaction systems is complex due to the simultaneous effect of chemical reactions and mass transfers. The extentbased incremental approach simplifies the modeling task by transforming the reaction system into variant states called vessel extents, one for each rate process. This transformation is carried out from the measured numbers of moles (or concentrations) and requires as many measured species as there are rate processes. Then, each vessel extent can be modeled individually, that is, independently of the other dynamic effects. This paper presents a modified version of the extent-based incremental approach that can be used to identify multiphase reaction systems in the presence of instantaneous equilibria. Different routes are possible depending on the number and type of measured species. One application is the identification of proteins and peptides by the matching of peptide and peptide fragment masses to the sequences of proteins in protein sequence databases. Often prior protein separation of complex protein mixtures by 2D-PAGE is needed, requiring more time and expertise than instructors of large laboratory classes can devote. We have developed an experimental module for our Biochemistry Laboratory course that engages students in MS-based protein identification following protein separation by one-dimensional SDS-PAGE, a technique that is usually taught in this type of course.
