Bicycle accidents have become the most common cause of serious injury in the traffic during the last couple of years in Sweden. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the input variables, initial velocity and head orientation, of a bicycle accident reconstruction on the strain levels in the brain using a detailed FE head model. The accident involved a non-helmeted 68 year old male who sustained a linear skull fracture, contusions, acute subdural hematoma, and small bleeding at the swelling (subarachnoid blood). The orientation of the head just before impact was determined from the swelling appearing in the computer tomography (CT) scans. The head model used in this study was developed at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The stress in the cranial bone, first principal strain in the brain tissue and acceleration were determined. The model was able to predict a strain pattern that correlated well with the medical images from the victim. The variation study ...
Carbohydrate mouth rinsing during exercise has been suggested to enhance performance of short (45-60 min) bouts of high-intensity (,75% VO2peak) exercise. Recent studies indicate that this performance enhancing effect may be dependent on the prandial state of the athlete. The purpose of this study was to define the impact of a carbohydrate mouth rinse on ~1-hr time trial performance in both the fasted and fed states. Using a double-blind, crossover design, 14 trained male cyclists (27 ± 6 years; 5.0 ± 0.5 W·kg−1) were selected to perform 4 time trials of ~1 hr (1,032 ± 127 kJ) on a cycle ergometer while rinsing their mouths with a 6.4% sucrose solution (SUC) or a noncaloric sweetened placebo (PLA) for 5 s at the start and at every 12.5% of their set amount of work completed. Two trials were performed in an overnight fasted state and two trials were performed 2 h after consuming a standardized breakfast. Performance time did not differ between any of the trials (fasted-PLA: 68.6 ± 7.2; ...

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa broke his elbow in a bicycle accident Saturday evening, a spokesman said. The mayor was riding in the bicycle lane on Venice Boulevard in Mid-City at about 6:50 p.m. when a taxi abruptly pulled in front of him. The mayor hit his brakes and fell off the bike. He was transported to Ronald Reagan/UCLA Medical Center, where he was treated for the broken bone. By 10 p.m. he had been released and was resting comfortably at Getty House, the mayors official residence. The mayors accident comes as bicyclists in the city have increasingly been complaining about safety issues and pressing city officials to do more to make cycling safe. Bicycle advocates have called for more dedicated bike lanes and appeared repeatedly before the City Council to argue that a specific share of funds from Measure R, the 2008 sales tax for transportation projects, should be set aside for bicycle- and pedestrian-related initiatives. Bicycle activist Stephen Box filled out paperwork last ...

During each pedal stroke, the knee goes through a revolution of both flexion and extension. Onset of knee pain is often coupled with overuse and exacerbated by overflexing the knee while applying a great amount of power. For example, at a minimum, a typical competitive amateur road cyclist trains at least 3 hours a ride, 5 days a week. Again, this is a minimum: Professional cyclists typically train 6 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week.. Each week, therefore, a typical competitive amateur cyclist is on the bicycle 15 hours (3 hours × 5 days a week). When this cyclist is pedaling, cadence is typically 90 revolutions a minute. Each training ride, this cyclists knees are completing a full rotation of the crankset 16,200 times (90 × 60 × 3); each week, 81,000 revolutions; each year, 4,212,000 revolutions. If the knee is even slightly out of adjustment, the resulting pain can be severe and become chronic.. As the angle of knee flexion (KF) increases, the patella translates superiorly, increasing ...

The drivetrain begins with pedals which rotate the cranks, which are held in axis by the bottom bracket. Most bicycles use a chain to transmit power to the rear wheel. A very small number of bicycles use a shaft drive to transmit power, or special belts. Hydraulic bicycle transmissions have been built, but they are currently inefficient and complex. Since cyclists legs are most efficient over a narrow range of pedaling speeds, or cadence, a variable gear ratio helps a cyclist to maintain an optimum pedalling speed while covering varied terrain. Some, mainly utility, bicycles use hub gears with between 3 and 14 ratios, but most use the generally more efficient dérailleur system, by which the chain is moved between different cogs called chainrings and sprockets in order to select a ratio. A dérailleur system normally has two dérailleurs, or mechs, one at the front to select the chainring and another at the back to select the sprocket. Most bikes have two or three chainrings, and from 5 to 11 ...

Here on the island, we have a network of bike trails - and again, we have these folks who insist that they are "too serious" to ride on them, but instead drive to our island to ride their expensive road bikes on our shoulder-less roads. When you try to pass them in your car, they intentionally veer out into the lane, to "prove their point" that they are entitled to a lane. And they give you nasty looks if you do pass. What is the point of that? They would prefer to have a line of cars behind them, all trying to pass? I fail to grasp the point of it ...
In addition to these bedrock benefits of intensity, hard riding carries numerous other advantages for road cyclists, who all too often ride at the same, steady pace on nearly every ride.. Greater choices of rides. Hard riding improves your power. Even if you ride just for good health, more power increases the choices of routes for your rides. You can add longer, hillier, harder routes and rides to your repertoire.. More pedaling economy. Hard riding improves your economy, how fast you can go at a given heart rate. This allows you to do longer and/or harder recreational rides.. More speed. Because hard riding improves your power, it also improves your speed so that you can keep up with - and maybe even drop - younger riders on club and group rides. Or just increase your cruising speed so you can cover more distance in the same amount of time.. More fun. Remember what it was like as a kid to just hop on your bike and ride for the fun of it? By riding differently from day to day, using intensity to ...

Editors Note: Heres the long-awaited third installment to my series on Floyd Landis and his epic Tour de France and subsequent doping controversy. While I dont claim to have all the answers, I do have a unique perspective that is based in part upon my career as a professional cyclist and in part upon my education and work in biochemistry and exercise science. If youre just finding this article for the first time, you might want to read Part I and Part II first. You might also find my views on pharmacological sport performance enhancement interesting or amusing. That post is here.. In part two we talked a bit about doping in cycling and how it is a systematic program and not a fly-by-the-seat of your pants (or fly with the help of a needle more accurately) athlete-as-physician circus act such as the press and the sports governing bodies would like to, and would also like the public to believe. We discussed the stage and how hard the GC contenders had to go on the final climb and finally we ...
I have to disagree. The fact that Amgen is the producer of a drug that is widely abused among professional cyclists is a legitimate reason for the sponsorship (if they go about addressing the problem in the right way). Almost all cyclists are aware of EPO, but I would be willing to bet that some do not know that it is a drug that has legitimate medical purposes. This sponsorship gives the company the opportunity to educate the cycling public about the drug and to stress the dangers of its improper use. If a rider had tested positive, I think the sponsors would have done just that. I think it is a safe bet to assume that they anticipated such a possible scenario and prepared a response in advance ...

Let me introduce our latest recruit to the triathlon team, Dave Mawhinney. I have raced alongside Dave since 2004 and we even did our first Ironman together in Nice, France. Whilst I like to race all triathlon distances, Dave has concentrated on Ironman racing and accomplished his long term goal of racing the world championships at the ironman distance in Hawaii last year. Not content with completing Hawaii last year, he managed to qualify again this year by winning his age group at Ironman UK (to put this in perspective, a recent article in triathletes world stated that 80,000 triathletes try to qualify for this iconic race). This is his first race report for TORQ and we hope you enjoy it. ...
Orlando, FL - February, 2016 - Individuals who engage intense physical activities, such as triathletes, often have a higher level of nutritional needs. This is why they need to practice a healthy diet and lifestyle. They may also consider using natural supplements to improve their overall health and avoid injuries.. Triathletes may potentially benefit from the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin. Both of these natural ingredients have been used over the years in fighting osteoarthritis, especially knee pain. Fortunately, there are supplements that contain both of these ingredients.. Multiple-stage competition, which involved swimming, cycling, and running, is typically the routine of triathletes. Knee pain is very common among triathletes due to the intense physical activity they are regularly engage in.. In an internet poll conducted by the runnersworld.com recently, it was found that 79.8 percent of individuals who took glucosamine and chondroitin experience significant improvements in ...

Editors note: The writer of the following is a local young man who was the victim of a bicycle accident, and offers advice to all who enjoy bike riding.. by Zack Hanline. My name is Zack Hanline and I am 14 years old. On the evening of June 6, 2011, I jumped on my new bike (Note: It was a bicycle, not a 4-wheeler or dirt bike) to take a quick ride around my yard before dinner. I did not put my helmet on because I was only taking a short ride. What a huge mistake. I had no idea what a nightmare I would be living for the next week. I do not really remember the wreck that well, but I think my foot slipped off the pedal and in between the bars. Then the bike slammed me to the ground, and my head hit the road really hard.. My parents looked out the window of the house, and saw me lying on the ground by my bike. I did not respond when they yelled for me, because I was unconscious. They ...

Nowhere is this trend more apparent than in the demise of what was once known as the winter road bike. In the old days (which I understand to be some time prior to 2005), one did not ride their good road bike year-round. Some time in the end of September, that bike would be put away and out would come the winter bike. Now, while there is no single definition of what that bike should be like, the general idea was two-fold: First, the winter bike should be both crappier and more robust than ones good road bike, due to the greater risk of damage by the elements as well as aggressive road saltings in winter. And second, it should be optimised for poor weather conditions. As far as frame material, this usually meant either heavy steel tubing or aluminum. And as far as components, this translated to either building the bike up as a fixed gear, or using an older, retired component group. Heavier, cheaper wheels with wider tires went on the bike in leu of summers good wheels with skinny tires. And ...

Q: Whats the difference between bikes that you sell and those at the big box discounters? They look the same. A: Big box stores sell plenty of bikes for less money than local bike shops. To the untrained eye, they look like the same thing youd find in a bike shop. Thats where the similarities end. Mass market bikes are cheaper because they come in only one size (yes, bikes are supposed to fit you - it makes them more comfortable to ride), use cheap parts that are heavy and dont hold an adjustment very long. Most importantly, they are not assembled using the proper tools nor or they assembled by trained mechanics. What many folks dont realize is that bicycles come to retailers un-assembled and need to be put together properly. Assembling bikes is not rocket science, but like any profession it requires a core level of knowledge to be competent. The point is you get what you pay for when it comes to most products. With bikes that is magnified. Cheap bikes are not bargains - theyre unsafe ...

AIM: We hypothesized that an extremely high pedal rate would induce much more type II muscle fibers recruitment even at an early phase of the same absolute work rate compared with normal pedal rates, and would result in changed amplitude of the pulmo
In contrast to the effects seen at 60 revs min-1, our experiments show that during exercise at 120 revs min-1 energy turnover was lower after muscle temperature had been elevated. In the schematic illustration shown in Fig. 5, a pedalling rate of 120 revs min-1 lies to the right of the optimum velocity for maximum efficiency under normal conditions (point c), i.e. on the descending right limb of the efficiency/velocity relationship. Consequently, the effect of heating the muscle, as shown by the dashed line, is to shift the efficiency/velocity relationship to the right so that optimum velocity occurs at a higher pedalling rate and efficiency at 120 revs min-1 (point d) is increased.. In this Discussion, we have been concerned with the effect of local heating on the energy turnover of the active muscles as a whole. Thus, changes in the efficiency/velocity relationship refer to a `global relationship of the involved muscles and the recruited fibres of those muscles that have diverse contractile ...
