On June 21-22, 2017, the Food and Nutrition Board convened A Workshop on Strategies to Limit Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption in Young Children: Evaluation of Federal, State, and Local Policies and Programs, in Washington, DC.
This review evaluates whether there is sufficient scientific evidence that decreasing sugar-sweetened beverage consumption will reduce the prevalence of obesity and its related diseases.
An association between diet soda consumption and subsequent weight gain is plausible. First, it has been hypothesized that artificial sweeteners may increase hedonistic desires for sweetness and more energy-dense foods (10-12). Second, overconsumption of other foods/beverages may also occur in conjunction with diet beverage consumption owing to overestimation of the number of calories saved by substituting diet beverages for sugar-sweetened beverages (4). Third, the association between diet beverages and weight gain may be biased by early awareness of energy imbalance, i.e., diet beverage consumption may serve as a proxy for early (failed) attempts to maintain weight. Nevertheless, empirical data have not universally supported these hypotheses. Although data from one observational study showed that women who consumed ,5.8 g saccharin daily gained slightly more weight than nonconsumers over 2 years (13), experimental data show that participants randomly assigned to dietary regimens that include ...
We investigated the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and its association with obesity and hypertension in a national sample of children and adolescents in China, where many low- and middle-income families live. Data were obtained from a 2014 national intervention program against obesity in Chinese children and adolescents aged 6-17 years. Height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure were measured. Information of SSB consumption, socioeconomic status, dietary intake, screen time, and physical activity were self-reported. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the association of SSB consumption with obesity and hypertension. A total of 66.6% of the 53,151 participants reported consuming SSB. The per capita and per consumer SSB intake were 2.84 ± 5.26 servings/week and 4.26 ± 5.96 servings/week, respectively. Boys, older children, and adolescents, and individuals with long screen time or high physical activity or low parental education level were more likely to
According to the frequency of SSB intake at baseline, we categorized participants as nonconsumers (none to ,1 serving/mo) and consumers (3 categories): 1 serving/mo to ,1 serving/week (occasional consumers), 1 serving/week to 1 serving/d (frequent consumers), and ≥1 serving/d (daily consumers). The same categorization strategy was applied for diet soda too. Mean and standard deviation or proportion and frequency were calculated for baseline characteristics of participants in each beverage consumption category. A median approach was used to examine the linear trend across consumption categories. The median intake value of SSB or diet soda in one category was assigned to all individuals in that category. The statistical significance of the linear trend was tested by linear or logistic regression model using the median intake value as a continuous independent variable.. Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the prospective association of beverage consumption and change in body ...

Background and aims: The prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents is increasing worldwide. One of the key lifestyle behaviors that helps prevent obesity and being overweight among children and adolescents is to avoid drinking sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) or to take, at most, one serving per day. The present study intended to evaluate knowledge and perceptions of high school girl students in Shahrekord on reducing SSBs consumption based on the health belief model (HBM). Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study, conducted in 2013-2014, randomly recruited 308 female students aged 13-14 years. The data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire based on HBM and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were evaluated using face validity, content validity, and inter-rater reliability. The Chi-square test, Pearsons correlation, and Spearmans correlation tests were used in SPSS software to analyze the data. The participants
Background-Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is associated with weight gain and risk of type 2 diabetes. Few studies have tested for a relationship with coronary heart disease (CHD), or intermediate biomarkers. The role of artificially sweetened beverages is also unclear. Methods and Results-We performed an analysis of the Health Professionals Follow-up study, a prospective cohort study including 42 883 men. Associations of cumulatively averaged sugar-sweetened (e.g. sodas) and artificially sweetened (e.g. diet sodas) beverage intake with incident fatal and non-fatal CHD (myocardial infarction) were examined using proportional hazard models. There were 3683 CHD cases over 22 years of follow-up. Participants in the top quartile of sugar-sweetened beverage intake had a 20% higher relative risk of CHD than those in the bottom quartile (RR=1.20, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.33, p for trend , 0.01) after adjusting for age, smoking, physical activity, alcohol, multivitamins, family history, diet quality, energy ...

Beverages from around the world participate in The World Beverage Competition for many reasons. Integrity, prestige, honor and success are words best used to describe the effect that Beverage Brands enjoy after receiving an award from this time-honored competition. The World Beverage Competition was founded on the premise that beverage products should be judged not by the strength of their marketing or the budget of their sales force, but rather on the quality and innovation of the product itself. The tradition continues as we have recently expanded the number of beverage categories to cover the full spectrum of products available in the world today. Beverage categories such as soft drinks, juices, bottled waters, energy drinks, coffee, tea, and sports drinks are represented in the competition. Alcohol beverages such as sprits, wine, and beer are each competing in their own competitions. Our competition has given Beverage brand owners spanning the globe the chance to compete on an even playing ...
Am J Clin Nutr: March 2013. Background: It has been extensively shown, mainly in US populations, that sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but less is known about the effects of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs).. Objective: We evaluated the association between self-reported SSB, ASB, and 100% fruit juice consumption and T2D risk over 14 y of follow-up in the French prospective Etude Epidémiologique auprès des femmes de la Mutuelle Générale de lEducation Nationale-European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort.. Design: A total of 66,118 women were followed from 1993, and 1369 incident cases of T2D were diagnosed during the follow-up. Cox regression models were used to estimate HRs and 95% CIs for T2D risk. In the current study, 72 healthy male volunteers ate their normal diet, but added a cup of the juice beverage to their breakfast and dinner. Half of the group drank a reduced-calorie, sterol-fortified orange juice beverage, while the other half drank a juice beverage without sterols. Both beverages were provided by The Coca-Cola Companys Beverage Institute for Health & Wellness.. Blood samples from fasting participants were taken before and after the trial to determine cholesterol levels. Researchers found that volunteers who drank the sterol-fortified orange juice beverage had an average 9-percent decrease in LDL cholesterol, and an average of 12-percent decrease in C-reactive protein levels. Researchers found no significant changes in LDL or C-reactive protein levels in those who drank the non-sterol fortified orange juice beverage.. Despite great strides in prevention and treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death throughout the Western world. Nearly half of all ...

Dietary guidelines for pure fruit juice consumption differ between countries, regarding the question whether pure fruit juice is an acceptable alternative for fruit. Currently, little is known about pure fruit juice consumption and the risk of CVD. In this prospective cohort study, we studied the association of pure fruit juice and fruit consumption with the incidence of fatal and non-fatal CVD, CHD and stroke and investigated the differences in association with pure fruit juice consumption between low and high fruit consumers. A validated FFQ was used to estimate dietary intake of 34 560 participants (26·0 % men and 74·0 % women) aged 20-69 years from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition-Netherlands study. Adjusted hazard ratios (HR) were estimated using Cox regression after average follow-up of 14·6 years. Compared with no consumption, pure fruit juice consumption up to 7 glasses/week - but not consumption of ≥8 glasses - was significantly associated with ...
Statistical procedures replicated the Dennison2study to the extent appropriate with our existing dataset. Although their study included children 2 and 5 years old, we compared our data only to their 2-year-olds. Our 60-month data had not been collected when the popular media began warning parents about the undesirable effects of excess fruit juice on childrens growth, so these childrens juice consumption at 60 months potentially could have been influenced by those reports.. Means plus/minus standard deviation were calculated, for demographic, beverage consumption, and anthropometric data. Differences in means between the two interviews and comparisons to the Dennison et al study2 were tested with the Students t test. Pearsons correlation analyses were used as the first step in testing the relationships between beverage intake and growth parameters and for the exploration of relationships among the four beverage categories.. Frequencies were obtained for categorical demographic variables and ...

Both liquid and solid calories were associated with weight change, however, only a reduction in liquid calorie intake was shown to significantly affect weight loss during the 6-month follow up," said Benjamin Caballero MD, PhD, senior author of the study and a professor with the Bloomberg Schools Department of International Health. "A reduction in liquid calorie intake was associated with a weight loss of 0.25 kg at 6 months and 0.24 kg at 18 months. Among sugar-sweetened beverages, a reduction of 1 serving was associated with a weight loss of 0.5 kg at 6 months and 0.7 kg at 18 months. Of the seven types of beverages examined, sugar-sweetened beverages were the only beverages significantly associated with weight change.". Researchers conducted a prospective study of 810 adults aged 25-79 years old participating in the PREMIER trial, an 18-month randomized, controlled, behavioral intervention. Caballero along with colleagues from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; the National Heart, Lung, ...

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are the principle source of added sugar in diets. Cardiometabolic disturbances can occur from early childhood to adulthood. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the gender-specific association of SSB intake with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among adolescents in Taiwan. A total of 2727 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years randomly selected from three diverse economic areas in Southern Taiwan by using a multistage-sampling strategy participated in this study. Demographic, dietary, physical and anthropometric parameters were measured, and serum lipid profiles and glucose levels were determined. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) specifies that MetS requires abdominal obesity and ≥2 abnormal components, and Cook criteria for MetS require ≥3 abnormal components. We applied survey-data modules to data analyses, and used multiple regression and logistic models to adjust for covariates. An increased SSB intake was linked to a greater waist
The hospitality and food science literatures specify brewing and holding temperatures for hot beverages such as coffee, while the medical literature states that those very beverage temperatures will cause scalds and harm. These two specifications are at odds with one another, and recommend different approaches to serving and handling hot beverages. Considering the disparate standards it is interesting to note that no one has reported asking consumers of hot beverages at which temperature they prefer to consume their hot beverages. This pilot study is a first step in determining the consumer preferred hot beverage temperature. The research intent is to see if a temperature, or temperature range, can be established at which consumers drink a hot beverage, in this case coffee. The research is particularly relevant given recent litigation relative to spills and burns at foodservice operations, and subsequent changes in holding temperatures at some quick service restaurant chains. The findings suggest that

STUDY QUESTION: Is caffeine and caffeinated beverage consumption associated with the risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB)? SUMMARY ANSWER: While preconceptional caffeine consumption was not materially associated with an increased risk of SAB, consumption during early pregnancy was associated with a small increased risk of SAB, although the relation was not linear. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Caffeine has been hypothesized as a risk factor for SAB since the 1980s; however, results from previous studies have been conflicting.

A beverage dispensing system with a base to which a dispensing head is removably attached without additional fasteners, wherein beverage forming liquids are supplied through a plurality of separate conduits in the base. Each base conduit has a normally closed valve that normally blocks fluid flow. The dispensing head has at least one passageway that receives liquid from an associated one of the base conduits. A projection associated with each dispensing head passageway opens the associated conduit valve to allow fluid flow from the base to the head. Dispensing valves in the dispensing head are independently accountable to regulate the dispensing of the beverage. In one version of the invention, four liquids are supplied to the dispensing head through the conduits, namely two liquid concentrates; carbonated water; and non-carbonated water. By selective opening of the dispensing valves, a plurality of beverages are formed from combinations of one or more of the liquids. A dispensing head for

Childhood obesity is associated with an increased intake of sugary soft drinks and juice drinks. The aims of this study were (1) to report the sugar and energy content in commercial fruit juice (FJ), juice drinks (JDs) and smoothies (S) specifically targeted at children in the UK, (2) to identify beverages liable for the soft drinks industry levy (SDIL) and (3) to compare the amount of sugar in these beverages before and after the levy. The beverages were retrieved using the online shopping tool, my Supermarket, websites of nine major supermarkets in the UK and manufacturers webpages. Comparisons of sugar content were taken before and after the introduction of the SDIL. 131 FJJDS fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The mean sugar content of all the beverages was 6.3 g ± 4.5/100 mL. There was large variation in the sugar content from 0.1 g/100 mL to 15.2 g/100 mL, with smoothies found to contain the most sugar (11.55 ± 1.62 g/mL). The beverages were reanalysed in September 2018 to determine their
Since we looked at National Beverage last year, the company has dropped another two points, adding to its one-point loss from 2011 to 2012. Falling gross margins and a big jump in debt are to blame for the score decline, but the stock has managed to post a total return of between 5% and 10% over the past year, including dividends.. National Beverage is the company behind Everfresh juice and Shasta soft drinks, among other beverage brands. Although some of its brands have been around for decades, the companys move into more up-to-date areas like LaCroix water and Rip It energy drinks show National Beverages flexibility in adapting to changing consumer trends.. National Beverages small size has helped it maintain growth, even in the face of weakness in the broader industry. Both drink giant Coca-Cola and fringe player Dr Pepper Snapple have had slower revenue growth over the past year, as pressures from lower unit volumes, and rising concerns about obesity, have hurt the industrys bigger ...
A school-based study conducted by the CDC reported that two-thirds of high school students drank some type of sugar-sweetened beverage (eg, soda, Hawaiian punch, lemonade, Kool-Aid, other sweetened fruit drinks, iced tea) at least once a day, and about 22% drank them at least 3 times a day. Male and non-Hispanic black students ate at a fast food restaurant at least 1 day a week, watched television more than 2 hours a day, and had a greater chance of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages at least 3 times a day than other groups studied. Students less likely to consume those drinks were non-Hispanic or those who were physically active at least 60 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week.18 One soda a day, depend-ing on the size (8 oz to 20 oz), could provide 270 to 690 calories a day. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with an increase in the risk of obesity; the risk increases 1.6 times (95% CI, 1.14-2.24; P = .02) for each additional serving of sugar-sweetened drink consumed ...
