Unfortunately no cure has been found yet; but treatment and management of chronic beryllium disease can slow down the progression of this disease.
The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex is a series of genes located on chromosome 6 that are important in normal immune function. Susceptibility to chronic beryllium disease, a granulomatous lung disease that appears in workers exposed to beryllium, is modified by genetic variants of the HLA-DP subregion. Evaluation of HLA-DPB1 sequence motifs in current and former beryllium workers implicated

In seven patients with chronic beryllium disease (Be) the Be lymphocyte transformation test was positive in 100%, independent of steroid therapy, and was reproducible. The Be macrophage migration inhibition test was only positive in four of seven patients (57%) not on steroids, and was not reproducible. In 72 potentially exposed healthy beryllium workers the lymphocyte transformation test was negative in all subjects. The macrophage test was positive in four of 78 and again the results were not reproducible. The workers with positive results showed no differences in age, type or duration of employment from those with negative results and showed no evidence of disease. In addition, the macrophage test was positive in two of 45 non-exposed control subjects. We also confirmed the above advantages of the lymphocyte transformation technique by using tuberculin antigen (PPD). The PPD lymphocyte transformation test gave positive results in approximately 60% of healthy beryllium workers, but the PPD ...

On December 12, 2017, Pennsylvanias Environmental Quality Board (EQB) unanimously approved a final-omitted rulemaking to substantially increase the Act 2 cleanup standards for beryllium, cadmium, and aldrin. The Act 2 cleanup standards are risk-based, meaning they are calculated according to the methods described in 25 Pa. Code Chapter 250 using the best-available toxicological data to be protective of human health under a variety of exposure scenarios. The standards must be periodically revised as newer and more accurate toxicological information becomes available, and the last such revision occurred in August 2016.. This currently proposed revision is intended to correct errors that were discovered in the 2016 cleanup standards for three substances: aldrin, beryllium, and cadmium. The original and corrected cleanup standards are presented in the table below.. ...
Beryllium is used mostly for military applications,[55] but there are other uses of beryllium, as well. In electronics, beryllium is used as a p-type dopant in some semiconductors,[56] and beryllium oxide is used as a high-strength electrical insulator and heat conductor.[57] Due to its light weight and other properties, beryllium is also used in mechanics when stiffness, light weight, and dimensional stability are required at wide temperature ranges.[58][59] Magnesium has many uses. It offers advantages over other materials such as aluminium, although this usage has fallen out of favor due to magnesiums flammability.[60] Magnesium is also often alloyed with aluminium or zinc to form materials with more desirable properties than any pure metal.[61] Magnesium has many other uses in industrial applications, such as having a role in the production of iron and steel, and the production of titanium.[62] Calcium also has many uses. One of its uses is as a reducing agent in the separation of other ...
A white powder; hexagonal; BeO. Used in the preparation of beryllium compounds and in ceramics and refractories. Melting point, 2,570 degrees C; and sp gr, 3.02. Bodies high in BeO have extremely high thermal conductivity (in the range of metals) and also possess high mechanical strength. Used in nuclear reactors because of its refractoriness, high thermal conductivity, and ability to act as a moderator for fast neutrons, reducing them to thermal speeds. Beryllia ceramics are used for electronic components and for crucibles for melting uranium and thorium. Syn: bromellite Source: Dictionary of Mining, Mineral, and Related Terms

Typically, we like to end the annual The Year in U.S. Occupational Health & Safety on an uplifting note. But this time around - to be honest - that was a hard sell. Take a quick look through the 2017 yearbook and youll quickly glean that worker health and safety is very much at risk under the new administration and from lawmakers in the states. From the attempted rollback of a new federal beryllium exposure standard to state efforts to weaken workers compensation systems, the view from 2017 does not seem terribly promising. On the other hand, the fight for workers rights has never… ...

To study the immunologic function of bursin, we analyzed the effects of anti-bursin monoclonal antibody (mAb) on the immunosuppression in ducks (Cherry Valley duck) by injecting various doses of the anti-bursin mAb into 13-d duck embryos. After hatch, cell-mediated immune activity and humoral responses were studied using lymphocyte proliferation test, tube agglutination test, and indirect enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay to detect anti-Escherichia coli antibodies and antibodies to Riemerella anatipester, respectively. Simultaneously, relative weights (BW-adjusted) of bursa of Fabricius (BF), spleen, and thymus were determined. Additionally, the morphology of BF, spleen, and thymus was examined at various ages using conventional histology. Follicle morphology of BF was analyzed by image analysis. The results indicated that anti-bursin mAb markedly decreased duck lymphocyte proliferation, the antibody-producing ability to bacteria, as well as the relative BF weight. Moreover, the anti-bursin mAb ...
Some new tests have been introduced, unfortunately there are no published studies demonstating their validity. One test is called an immune tolerance test. It measures T cell proliferation after exposure to select Lyme antigens. There exist very few studies regarding such lymphocyte proliferation tests for diagnosing Lyme. Oddly, the background paper published by the manufacturer, describing the underpinnings of this technology, cites an old Wormser study in the foot notes. The Wormser study using somewhat different methods concluded the test was insensitive but specific ...

Researchers at International Business Machines Corp. have developed a new approach for simulating molecules on a quantum computer.. The breakthrough, outlined in a research paper to be published in the scientific journal Nature Thursday, uses a technique that could eventually allow quantum computers to solve difficult problems in chemistry and electro-magnetism that cannot be solved by even the most powerful supercomputers today.. In the experiments described in the paper, IBM researchers used a quantum computer to derive the lowest energy state of a molecule of beryllium hydride. Knowing the energy state of a molecule is a key to understanding chemical reactions.. In the case of beryllium hydride, a supercomputer can solve this problem, but the standard techniques for doing so cannot be used for large molecules because the number of variables exceeds the computational power of even these machines.. The IBM researchers created a new algorithm specifically designed to take advantage of the ...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study aims to summarize the current body of literature on the relationship between various toxic metals exposures (i.e., aluminum, antimony, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, and nickel) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with a focus on potential sex differences in these associations. RECENT FINDINGS: Sex differences in ASD diagnosis and mutagenic effects of toxic exposures indicate that sex differences may play a major part in the causal relationship of any potential associations seen; however, we were only able to find three studies that reported on sex differences in observed associations with toxic metals exposure and ASD ...

Sodium chloride is heavily used, so even relatively minor applications can consume massive quantities. In oil and gas exploration, salt is an important component of drilling fluids in well drilling. It is used to flocculate and increase the density of the drilling fluid to overcome high downwell gas pressures. Whenever a drill hits a salt formation, salt is added to the drilling fluid to saturate the solution and to minimize the dissolution within the salt stratum.[11] Salt is also used to increase the curing of concrete in cemented casings.[9]. In textiles and dyeing, salt is used as a brine rinse to separate organic contaminants, to promote salting out of dyestuff precipitates, and to blend with concentrated dyes to standardize them. And thats not all Trump has done in his first months in office to dismantle worker protections at the behest of big businesses. He has also delayed implementation of OSHAs newest chemical exposure limits - for silica dust and beryllium. These rules took decades to finalize and will save hundreds of lives a year once they are in effect. But every time they get delayed, workers are left in harms way for no good reason, increasing the chance theyll develop debilitating, often fatal diseases that will devastate their families. Not only is the fate of these rules unknown, new safeguards to address other hazards like heat stress, toxic chemicals, and workplace violence seem exceedingly unlikely from the Trump administration, putting even more lives in danger. Trump has proposed cutting the Department of Labors budget by 21 percent, making it practically impossible for OSHA to carry out its basic tasks like conducting inspections and citing employers for violating worker health and safety ...
Background: Dental technicians (DTs) are exposed to Beryllium (Be) and other substances capable of inducing lung disease. Heme oxygenase -1 (HO-1) play a protective antioxidant role in the lung. The guanine-thymidine (GT) n repeats in the HO-1 promoter determine HO-1 induction level. Introduction. The Uses and Significance of Group 2 Compounds The group two elements consist of Beryllium, Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium and Radium. These are known as the Group Two elements because of their unique electron division. Each one of these elements, consists of two outer shell electrons. Because of the lack of outer electrons, these elements are highly reactive. Group two electrons have a positive Two charge or +ve. The Group 2 elements are all metals with a shiny, silvery-white colour. The alkaline earth metals are high in the reactivity series of metals, but not as high as the alkali metals of Group 1. These elements are all found in the Earths crust, but not in the elemental form as they are so reactive. Instead, they are widely distributed in rock structures. The metals of Group 2 are harder and denser than sodium and potassium, and have higher melting points. The chemical properties of Group 2 elements are dominated by the strong reducing power of the metals. ...read ...

Since it has few available electrons for metallic bonding, like its heavier group 13 congeners, it has the characteristic physical properties of a post-transition metal, with longer-than-expected interatomic distances.[20] Furthermore, as Al3+ is a small and highly charged cation, it is strongly polarizing and aluminium compounds tend towards covalency;[25] this behaviour is similar to that of beryllium (Be2+), an example of a diagonal relationship.[26] However, unlike all other post-transition metals, the underlying core under aluminiums valence shell is that of the preceding noble gas, whereas for gallium and indium it is that of the preceding noble gas plus a filled d-subshell, and for thallium and nihonium it is that of the preceding noble gas plus filled d- and f-subshells. Hence, aluminium does not suffer the effects of incomplete shielding of valence electrons by inner electrons from the nucleus that its heavier ...
The most successful and best suited for rapid identification of alloys in field has been Handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (HHXRF). However, the XRF has inherent difficulty in analysis of many important aluminum alloys as well as other alloys containing low atomic number elements such as lithium, beryllium, boron, silicon or magnesium.
I have recently read two Open Forum letters stating that fluoride in our water system was important and the amount of fluoride in our drinking water was safe. Why is fluoride in our drinking system in the first place? The pat answer is, of course, to prevent tooth decay. This answer has been debunked for years. Just to name one source, The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson will convince you otherwise. In his book, Mr. Bryson states: In a society where asbestos, lead, silica, beryllium and many other carcinogens have found their way into the marketplace and then been recalled, one has to wonder why fluoride, so toxic it is used as a rat poison and pesticide, is embraced so thoroughly and so blindly. Because of limited space, I would add more sources but they would fill a phonebook ...

Beryllium Copper is one of the strongest copper-based alloys. The excellent thermal conductivity and corrosion-resistance make BeCu powerful.
These pseudomorphs have puzzled mineralogists since the mid 19th century. They have a very distinctive form, and show all aspects of full tetrahedral symmetry (43m point group). They consist of fine-grained hydroxylated grossular, and contain no relict traces of their original mineral. Glocker lists Achtaragdit in his 1847 Generum et Specierum Mineralium Synopsis. Breithaupt (1866) suggests helvite, a manganese beryllium silicate, for the original mineral. Notably, there is no manganese staining in these crystals or their matrix; it does not take much manganese oxide to stain crystals black... Prendel (1889) postulates boracite, magnesium borate, for the precursor. Pekov (1998) finally suggests wadalite, a calcium aluminum silicate. A nice example with a bit of attached matrix. Not so common on the mineral market. ...
In 1931 Walther Bothe and Herbert Becker in Germany found that if the very energetic alpha particles emitted from polonium fell on certain light elements, specifically beryllium, boron, or lithium, an unusually penetrating radiation was produced. At first this radiation was thought to be gamma radiation, although it was more penetrating than any gamma rays known, and the details of experimental results were very difficult to interpret on this basis. The next important contribution was reported in 1932 by Irène Joliot-Curie and Frédéric Joliot in Paris. They showed that if this unknown radiation fell on paraffin, or any other hydrogen-containing compound, it ejected protons of very high energy. This was not in itself inconsistent with the assumed gamma ray nature of the new radiation, but detailed quantitative analysis of the data became increasingly difficult to reconcile with such a hypothesis.. In 1932, James Chadwick performed a series of experiments at the University of Manchester, ...
As a recognized leader in managing electronic waste (e-waste) collected from consumers and its own facilities in the U.S., Sprint now is supporting an effort to address a growing problem in developing countries.. Obsolete and broken computers, monitors, televisions, cell phones and other equipment contribute to an estimated 50 million tons of e-waste produced around the globe each year. While many of these items are responsibly collected and processed today for reuse and recycling, not all are disposed of properly. When these electronics are mishandled, it increases the risk of toxins from those devices - like lead, cadmium, polyvinyl chlorides, and beryllium - to permeate the earth, contaminating water and land around it.. Some of this broken and obsolete equipment makes its way to developing countries that lack the infrastructure needed to process them in a safe manner. The problem has become so pervasive in developing countries such as Ghana that they have become known as digital dumping ...

On May 21, 1946,[11] physicist Louis Slotin and seven other Los Alamos personnel were in a Los Alamos laboratory conducting another experiment to verify the closeness of the core to criticality by the positioning of neutron reflectors. Slotin, who was leaving Los Alamos, was showing the technique to Alvin C. Graves, who would use it in a final test before the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests scheduled a month later at Bikini Atoll. It required the operator to place two half-spheres of beryllium (a neutron reflector) around the core to be tested and manually lower the top reflector over the core using a thumb hole on the top. As the reflectors were manually moved closer and farther away from each other, scintillation counters measured the relative activity from the core. The experimenter needed to maintain a slight separation between the reflector halves in order to stay below criticality. The standard protocol was to use shims between the halves, as allowing them to close completely could ...

The early rapid proliferation of epithelium is a pre-requisite for the rapid healing of wound surface of epithelium. In the present tests, the epithelial cells used for identifying test materials are taken from normal human skin, and the cells are cultured and grow in media containing the silicon and calcium microparticles of the present invention prepared according to the process of the Example 2. The specific combinations of chemical ingredients are pre-added in to the cell culture media used in the present tests at the concentrations as depicted in the Table of Fig. 3. One group serves as a control. Experimental groups with the test materials are compared to said control group to determine the induction effect of the test materials on the growth of cells. During the culture procedure, the media are replaced with fresh media having the same specific compositions every four days. Cell proliferation tests are conducted on the 12th and 20th day by counting the total number of cells grown in media ...
