Acute aflatoxin exposure can cause death and disease (aflatoxicosis) in humans. Aflatoxicosis fatality rates have been documented to be as high as 40% in Kenya. The inclusion in the diet of calcium silicate 100 (ACCS100), a calcium montmorillonite clay, may reduce aflatoxin bioavailability, thus potentially decreasing the risk of aflatoxicosis. We investigated the efficacy, acceptability and palatability of ACCS100 in a population in Kenya with recurring aflatoxicosis outbreaks. Healthy adult participants were enrolled in this double-blinded, crossover clinical trial in 2014. Following informed consent, participants (n = 50) were randomised to receive either ACCS100 (3 g day-1) or placebo (3 g day-1) for 7 days. Treatments were switched following a 5-day washout period. Urine samples were collected daily and assessed for urinary aflatoxin M1 (AFM1). Blood samples were collected at the beginning and end of the trial and assessed for aflatoxin B1-lysine adducts from serum albumin (AFB1-lys). AFM1 ...
The ice nucleation characteristics of montmorillonite mineral dust aerosols with and without exposure to ammonia gas were measured at different atmospheric temperatures and relative humidities with a continuous flow diffusion chamber. The montmorillonite particles were exposed to pure (100%) and diluted ammonia gas (25 ppm) at room temperature in a stainless steel chamber. There was no significant change in the mineral dust particle size distribution due to the ammonia gas exposure. 100% pure ammonia gas exposure enhanced the ice nucleating fraction of montmorillonite mineral dust particles 3 to 8 times at 90% relative humidity with respect to water (RHw) and 5 to 8 times at 100% RHw for 120 min exposure time compared to unexposed montmorillonite within our experimental conditions. The percentages of active ice nuclei were 2 to 8 times higher at 90% RHw and 2 to 7 times higher at 100% RHw in 25 ppm ammonia exposed montmorillonite compared to unexposed montmorillonite. All montmorillonite ...
Sauvignon blanc often requires large amounts of bentonite in order to remove haze proteins and make the wine heat stable. However, large bentonite additions can affect the sensory perception of the wine. We studied the effect of adding small amounts of bentonite before fermentation on the subsequent amount required after fermentation to heat stabilize the wine. Protein stability was evaluated in two lots of Sauvignon blanc juice from two blocks of the same Edna Valley vineyard. Bentonite (Volclay KWK, American Colloid Co.), 4.6 g suspended in 200 mL water, was added to 19 L of juice prior to fermentation. The control had 200 mL water added only. Juice treated with bentonite before fermentation required the lowest amounts of postfermentation bentonite to achieve protein stability, as determined by heat stability tests using a nephelometer. A correlation was observed between the turbidity of heated juices treated with different amounts of bentonite and protein measured by the Bradford Protein method.

Co-adsorption of norfloxacin (Nor) and Cu(II) on montmorillonite at pH 4.5, 7.0 and 9.0 was studied by integrated batch adsorption experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Under such pH conditions the dominant species of Nor are cation (Nor+), zwitterion (Nor±), and anion (Nor−), respectively. Results indicated that Nor sorption decreased with an increase of solution pH. The presence of Cu(II) slightly suppressed the Nor+ sorption at pH 4.5, while increased Nor± and Nor−sorption on montmorillonite at pH 7.0 and 9.0, respectively. In contrast, Nor increased Cu(II) adsorption at pH 4.5, but had little effect on the adsorption of Cu(II) on montmorillonite at pH 7.0 and 9.0. Spectroscopic results showed that, at pH 4.5, Nor+ was sorbed on montmorillonite by the formation of outer-sphere montmorilloniteNorCu(II) ternary surface complex. At pH 7.0, montmorilloniteNorCu(II) and montmorilloniteCu(II)Nor ternary surface complexes co-exist. At pH 9.0, ...
This is a bit of a long read but very much worth it! Read it and learn!. Far removed from prominent view, exists an age old substance in nature, known as "Calcium Montmorillonite Clay." There are only a limited number of "Calcium Montmorillonite Clay" deposits around the world. The first site was discovered in Montmorillon, France in the 1800s, hence the name, Montmorillonite. For centuries Native American healers used it internally and externally in the treatment of a variety of illnesses. In years past sailing vessels departing from France were known to store clay on board for the treatment of dysentery as well as other ailments. Animals, domestic and wild alike, instinctually drawn to clay deposits have been observed licking the clay as part of their everyday diet, and rolling in it to obtain relief from injuries.. A recognized detoxifying agent, nutrient and bactericidal "Calcium Montmorillonite Clay" is in the smectite group of clays. Only those clays within the smectite group have the ...

Abstract: The adsorption of tris(1,10-phenanthroline)-ruthenium(II) (Ru(phen)32+) by two kinds of colloidally dispersed clays, sodium montmorillonite and synthetic saponite, was studied by spectrophotometric and electron-optical methods. Montmorillonite adsorbed this complex stronger than saponite. The electronic spectrum measurements suggested that the electronic states of the complex were more perturbed on adsorption by montmorillonite than by saponite. High-performance liquid chromatography was attempted on an ion-exchanged adduct of optically active Ru(phen)32+ and these clays. 1,1′-Binaphthol was eluted with a t: 1 (v/v) water-methanol mixture as an eluent. The compound was resolved with a separation factor of 15 and 1.4 on the saponite and montmorillonite columns, respectively. If tris(acetylacetonato)-chromium(III) was eluted with water, the compound was resolved with separation factors of 1.9 and 11 on the saponite and montmorillonite columns, respectively. These separation tendencies ...

Abstract: An experimentally determined Ca-Mg exchange isotherm of montmorillonite is reported. The selectivity coefficient of this exchange over a wide range of Mg saturation was calculated and found constant.. Standard free energies of exchange, thermodynamic equilibrium constants and activity coefficients of the exchangeable Ca and Mg ions in vermiculite and montmorillonite, were predicted from knowledge of the microstructure of these two clays, assuming that coulombic forces are the main ones playing a role in the interaction between the counterions and the charged clay surface. The standard free energies of exchange (ΔG°CaMg = 238 cal/mole) predicted a preference for Ca in montmorillonite and a preference for Mg in vermiculite (ΔG°CaMg = −1665 cal/mole). The predicted thermodynamic equilibrium constants were compatible with the experimentally determined selectivity coefficients KCaMg = 0·67 as compared with KsCaMg = 0·68 in montmorillonite, which remains constant over all the range ...

A VOLCANIC DETOXIFIER Bentonite, a medicinal powdered clay which is also known as montmorillonite, derives from deposits of weathered volcanic ash. It is one of the most effective natural intestinal detoxifying agents available and has been recognized as such for centuries by native peoples around the world. Whatever the name, liquid clay contains minerals that, once inside the gastrointestinal tract, are able to absorb toxins and deliver mineral nutrients to an impressive degree, says Knishinsky. Liquid clay is inert which means it passes through the body undigested. Technically, the clay first adsorbs toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, pesticides), attracting them to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a kitchen counter mess. There is an electrical aspect to bentonite s ability to bind and absorb toxins. According to Yerba Prima, a company based in Ashland, Oregon, which markets Great ...
In three steps to ruthenium-based heterogeneous catalysts: The central element of this novel and simple route is the immobilization of Ru0 nanoparticles on montmorillonite (see picture; the arrows indicate a Ru nanoparticle intercalated in the interlaminar space of montmorillonite) with the help of an ionic liquid. The resulting catalyst is highly efficient for the hydrogenation of benzene. ...
In Sweden and in many other countries, a bentonite barrier will be used in the repository for spent nuclear fuel. In the event of canister failure, colloidal diffusion is a potential, but scarcely studied mechanism of radionuclide migration through the bentonite barrier. Column and in situ experiments are vital in understanding colloid diffusion and in providing information about the microstructure of compacted bentonite and identifying cut-off limits for colloid filtration. This study examined diffusion of negatively charged 2-, 5-, and 15-nm gold colloids in 4-month diffusion experiments using MX-80 Wyoming bentonite compacted to dry densities of 0.6-2.0 g/cm3. Breakthrough of gold colloids was not observed in any of the three diffusion experiments. In a gold-concentration profile analysis, colloid diffusion was only observed for the smallest gold colloids at the lowest dry density used (estimated apparent diffusivity Da ...

Bentonite Clay helps with detoxification in the digestive tract. It is a natural clay mineral, created from volcanic ash deposits that are millions of years old. Bentonite Clay has been used for centuries in ancient cultures to cleanse the digestive system. It is important to note that Bentonite Clay is a natural compound that is obtained from Mother Earth. It is not a chemical, supplement, or drug made in a laboratory. We like Yerba Prima Great Plains Bentonite Clay, its one of the cleanest and purest clays on the market. You can find it online or in many health food stores (supplement section).. Bentonite Clay has the unique ability to bind herbicides, pesticides, viruses, heavy metals, aflatoxin and other substances that are harmful to the body. The negatively charged ions allow it to bind with positively charged toxins in the body, particularly in the stomach, the small intestine and the colon. The body does not actually digest the clay nor does it move into the bloodstream. Since toxins ...
The specific interfacial area of bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorbed on montmorillonite was deduced from the ratio between the quantity of cations exchanged on adsorption of BSA and the quantity of protein bound. A paramagnetic cation, Mn2+, was used, and its release from the clay surface was followed by measuring the line broadening effect of displaced Mn2+ on the 31P NMR signal from orthophosphate in the solution. From experiments conducted at different protein/clay ratios and different pH, it was deduced: (i) that no more than one monolayer was adsorbed; (ii) that the specific interfacial area was the same at low and at high surface coverage; (iii) that below the isoelectric point (i.e.p.) the specific interfacial area of BSA increased with decreasing pH, with a constant surface coverage of the clay surface; and (iv) that above the i.e.p. the surface coverage of the clay decreased with further increases in pH. It is assumed that electrostatic interactions between the protein and the clay surface play
Natural bentonite clay from the Bogovina locality in Serbia was Na-exchanged and modified using hexadecyll-trimethylammonium bromide as surfactant and organobentonite was obtained. The influence of modifications on the structural, textural and sorption properties of bentonite was investigated. It was estimated that modifications solely replace exchangeable cations in smectite layers, whereas other admixture minerals (quartz, calcite, feldspar) in bentonite remain unaffected. According to X-ray results the modification lead to changes in the smectite structure by either decreasing, for Na-bentonite, or increasing, for organobentonite, the interplanar spacing, d(001). The appearance of three new bands in IR spectra of HDTMA-bentonite comparing to those of raw and Na-bentonite assigned to the methylene vibrations confirmed the embedding of aliphatic cations into smectite structure. In organobentonite a significant change in textural properties was observed. In particular, specific surface... area ...
Clay receives vital energies from sun, air, and waters, making it a powerful agent of stimulation, transformation and transmission of energy. As every filing from a magnet maintains its properties, every parcel of clay retains a considerable amount of energy of our planets large and powerful magnetic entity. This radioactive action (def.: emission and propagation and emission of energy in the form of rays or waves) transmits extraordinary strength to an organism and helps rebuild vital potential by liberating its latent energy. We all possess extraordinary energy resources that normally remain dormant. Clay awakens them!. It would be presumptuous to attempt a precise and concrete explanation of the basic action of clay. Among the properties to which we can attribute its effect is radioactivity. Clay is radioactive to a degree (as is everything), but this radioactivity is generally imperceptible to the testing apparatus at present used in laboratories. Some muds are an ...

There is concern that the high sodium content in bentonite clay will provide too much sodium. This is not true. Natural sodium is okay. Its processed salt that is the problem. Plus, many of the minerals in the clay are excreted with the toxins…unless the body needs them first, then it uses them as needed. Also, some people claim that sodium in bentonite clay constipates them severely. Id argue they are using calcium bentonite clay or are not drinking enough water. Its a very good laxative. If that doesnt work, the problem might be more toxins than minerals. Adding activated charcoal or psyllium might be a good way to correct the aggravation the clay might have caused, if any.. Its also important not to use metal when mixing your bentonite clay, as it will leach positively charged metals out of any source. A reputable source of the clay even uses caution in this regard even when its mined. Stainless steel is the steel they use to mine it.. Bentonite has other elements important for your ...
The stability of montmorillonlte colloid dispersion has been studied by measuring the viscosity and Zeta-potential of the colloid dispersions. Results show that they are higher for Na-montmorillonite than for Ca-montmorillonite, suggestlng that the former is expected to show a greater tendency of dispersion. In mixed Na/Ca-montmorillonite the replacement of 10% absorbed Ca~(2+) by Na~+ will increase the viscosity and Zeta-potential. When the exchangeable sodium ion of montmorillonite colloids reaches a value of about 50-60% of ECP the viscosity and Zeta-potential will be close to those of pure Na-collolds,which means the double layer thickness of the colloids approximates that of pure Na-colloids. It has also been shown that the viscosity and Zeta-potential of montmorillonite colloid dispersion are closely related to the kind of exchangeable cations. In montmorillonite colloids they increase with increasing concentration of electralytes (NaCl, Na_2CO_3 and Na_2C_2O_4) in the dispersion. Also, they are
When teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) is planted on acrisols in Northeast Thailand, its growth is suppressed by low pH, infertility, and low water holding capacity. To examine materials capable of increasing water holding capacity in soil and improving teak growth, we conducted an experiment with teak seedlings. We selected bentonite, charcoal, and corncob and added these materials at a rate of 4% to sandy soil from northeast Thailand. Teak seedlings were potted on these soils and raised from July 2013 to July 2014. We compared growth, photosynthetic rates, leaf water potential, and concentrations of elements in plant organs among bentonite, charcoal, corncob, and no addition (control) treatments. Water content in the soils was increased for the bentonite and charcoal treatments. Teak seedlings potted in these two conditions did not suffer from drought stress. Comparing the growth traits of the teak seedlings, the charcoal treatment produced larger root growth and promoted the uptake of phosphorus and

A novel masonry material containing postindustrial cellulose, bentonite clay, and small amounts of other additives (e.g., antifungal, desiccant and water proofing agents) was made and characterized. The overall mechanical properties of the composite material are controlled and tailored by varying the ratio of the primary constituents (postindustrial cellulose and bentonite clay). This grade of cellulose is no longer suitable for use in the manufacture of recycled paper products and, as such, it is considered a waste product. The described process repurposes this cellulose waste as a component in a structural element that can be worked using standard woodworking tools. The materials compressive strength ranges from approximately 338 psi (2.33 MPa) at low bentonite ratios (less than 50 % by mass) to approximately 1,015 psi (7.01 MPa) at higher bentonite ratios (greater than 60 % by mass). The higher bentonite ratio, Ratio B, has a compressive strength similar to that of a Class 2 burnt brick but ...

Ethylene-(vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)/organo-modified montmorillonite clay (OMMT) composites were prepared using commercial OMMTs with two different organo-modifiers. The first one has polar groups, which interact with EVOH chains, whereas the second one is non-polar. Composites with a high weight percentage of OMMT were prepared bymelt-extrusion in a twin-screw extruder. Films were prepared in a cast-film line in order to evaluate the tensile and fracture parameters. The morphology of the EVOH/OMMT composites was characterized using wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy, complemented by image analysis. Themechanical propertieswere evaluated using uniaxial tensile tests; the fracture behaviour was analysed using the essential work of fracture (EWF) method. Results show differences in composite morphologies and crystalline fraction, depending on the content and the nature of the organo-modifier. The mechanical and fracture behaviours are strongly influenced by those ...

Abstract: This research has for object to study the influence of clay addition, i.e., Maghnian bentonite, like deposit clay, in the physical properties of sandy materials from Mostaganem plateau (North-West Algeria) submitted to salinity and sodicity. The first result was to show that the clay content changes drastically the physical properties of clay-sand mixtures. Important differences were observed as a function of the sand particle size distribution. At given clay content, the saturated Hydraulic Conductivity (HCs) was lower when the sand size was small and spread. For the coarse sand the salinity was maintained, even for high clay contents, a significant hydraulic conductivity. One of the main characteristics of Maghnia clay is the presence of calcium carbonates in the natural material. In comparison to that of Mostaganem clay of other deposit, it appears less sensitive to sodicity. An important aspect is the initial state of the clay when used in addition to sands, i.e., disturbance, ...
