Boston)-Boston University (BU) is one of 10 institutions to receive a $50,000 Prize for Enhancing Faculty Gender Diversity from the Office of Research on Womens Health at the National Institutes of Health. The award recognizes institutions that have made systemic changes to improve gender diversity and equity among faculty members within their biomedical and behavioral science departments, centers or divisions. Women continue to be under-represented at nearly every institution of higher education in the United States in the fields of biomedical, behavioral sciences and engineering, particularly among mid- to senior-level faculty ranks. Retaining women in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) and fostering their career growth requires a comprehensive, data-informed approach grounded in opportunities for professional development and mentorship, says Megan H Bair-Merritt, MD, MSCE, professor of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and board-certified ...
The global financial crisis has challenged many of our most authoritative economic ideologies and policies. After thirty years of reshaping the world to conform to the market, governments and societies are now calling for a retreat to a yet undefined new economic order. In order to provide a guide to what the twenty-first-century economy might look like, this book revisits the great project of Global Capitalism. What did it actually entail? How far did it go? What were its strengths and failings? By deconstructing its core ideas and examining its empirical record, can we gain clues about how to move forward after the crisis? Miguel Centeno and Joseph Cohen define capitalism as a historically-evolving and socially-constructed institution, rooted in three core economic activities trade, finance and marketing and identify the three key challenges that any new economic system will need to surmount inequality, governance, and environmental sustainability.. This accessible and engaging book will be ...

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychological illness in which the individual is preoccupied with one or more perceived defects or flaws in appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others. Individuals suffering from BDD encounter many difficulties when interacting with others in many aspects of their lives such as social, educational or occupational aspects. The concern about body image is not due to other mental disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia (1). They have their thoughts fixated on the perceived defect. Their symptomatology ranges widely from repetitive mirror checking or avoidance of mirrors, masking the affected area, and asking for medical help especially from plastic surgeons. They may experience different emotions such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, which can be incapacitating, leading to social avoidance and seeking reassurance from family and friends. Any part of the body can be involved but mainly include the apparent parts like the ...

Several studies have examined the cognitive profile of people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (IQ > 70), and its relationship with the symptoms of ASD and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV). However, no data exist on the similarities or differences in this profile in less affluent countries. The present study examined the cognitive profile and its relationship with the symptoms of ASD and ADHD in 30 subjects aged 6–16 years with high-functioning ASD and compared the results with those of 30 typically developing (TD) subjects. In line with previous research findings, the WISC-IV cognitive profile analysis of subjects with high-functioning ASD showed a good competence in Matrix Reasoning and weaknesses in Comprehension, but the main distinguishing point was the competence in processing speed in both groups. In the present study, the Verbal Comprehension Index correlated negatively with the
Geological substrates and air pollution affect the availability of calcium to mammals in many habitats, including the Adirondack Mountain Region (Adirondacks) of the United States. Mammalian insectivores, such as shrews, may be particularly restricted in environments with low calcium. We examined the consequences of calcium restriction on the least shrew (Cryptotis parva) in the laboratory. We maintained one group of shrews (5 F, 5 M) on a mealworm diet with a calcium concentration comparable to beetle larvae collected in the Adirondacks (1.1 ± 0.3 mg/g) and another group (5 F, 3 M) on a mealworm diet with a calcium concentration almost 20 times higher (19.5 ± 5.1 mg/g). Animals were given no access to mineral sources of calcium, such as snail shell or bone. We measured running speed and performance in a complex maze over 10 weeks. Shrews on the high-calcium diet made fewer errors in the maze than shrews on the low-calcium diet (F1,14 = 12.8, p | 0.01). Females made fewer errors than males (F1,14 = 10

In the nearly two decades since the HIV pandemic began, the rapid expansion of behavioral research on HIV prevention has prompted a crucial need for a sourcebook more advanced than an introductory textbook and broader and more readily accessible than a review periodical. The Handbook of HIV Prevention is intended as the first attempt to meet this need. The current state of affairs led us to edit a book that would represent the major areas of HIV behavioral research at a level appropriate for graduate students and experienced researchers in public health, medicine, nursing, education, and the social and behavioral sciences. In addition, we expect that the handbook will be useful in advanced undergraduate courses and as a reference book for health care professionals. Our plans to assemble the Handbook began in the fall of 1996 when we prepared a tentative outline of chapters and invited a large number of distinguished researchers in the field to be the authors of various chapters. We received an

Social & Behavioral Sciences Gateway, Room 3323 A one day conference. As posed by Tobias Rees, what actual forms does fieldwork assume when researchers, inspired by classic traditions of ethnography, are yet no longer interested primarily in ethnoi, territorially imagined societies and their cultures, but in events, emergent forms of life, assemblages? What becomes of fieldwork as method when it is conceived as the study of particular subjects and groups as cultures but then evolves in inquiries that escape the classic conceptions of doing ethnography, and are left with formulations of questions to which ethnography does not provide answers? For further information or to RSVP, please contact Sylvia Lotito, [email protected]. ...

While the general wisdom has it that behaviorism is dead, it not only survives but is intellectually active in areas such as psychological theory, the analysis of language and cognition, and behavioral economics. It is a successful, albeit limited, source of behavioral science. Its chief difficulty arises when its practitioners look out from their laboratory windows and attempt to explain the complexities of human behavior that will never be amenable to direct experimental investigation. Behavior analysis has failed to establish a methodology of interpretation to deal fully with such complexity. The message of this essay is that it cannot do so without embracing intentional explanation in the form of an interpretive overlay that plugs the gaps in its explanations of life beyond the lab.. ...

2018 the authors. Systems Research and Behavioral Science published by International Federation for Systems Research and John Wiley. &. Sons Ltd the use of problem structuring method (PSM) interventions leads to outcomes unique to the circumstances of the problem context. Given the singular nature of these outcomes, a consultant attempting to sell a PSM intervention will struggle to articulate value to clients in terms that are commercially meaningful prior to the intervention being enacted. Thus, in order to win a contract to deliver a PSM intervention, the consultant must first resolve this puzzle. We explore this question by (i) reviewing how the value of PSMs has been assessed previously, (ii) setting out a suitable theoretical position to explore the problem and (iii) presenting empirical data from a commercial organization to build our theoretical position. This starts with agreement with Checkland and Scholes that attempting to sell the (financial) value of a PSM intervention a priori is ...

Studying the liberal arts reveals the complexity of being human. This umbrella of studies helps bring to light the social, environmental, physical, and health problems faced in Guam, Micronesia, and worldwide. Students can then construct solutions from the skills they develop in class.. Sellmann categorizes these skills by each division within the college. The fine arts programs teach innovation. The various humanities programs teach how humanity can adapt and flourish in local, regional, and global communities in the face of existential challenges. Over the past two years, a number of designers have asked permission to use the Universitys code, and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Ohio State University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville have created Web sites that look and function just like Browns.. Though the code for Browns site is copyrighted, the University views the similar designs as a compliment, said Director of Web Communications Scott Turner.. Turner learned about OSUs similar Web site design last October, when the OSU webmaster sent him an e-mail asking if the site infringed upon Browns copyright.. I dont know if the code they used was stolen. They wanted to imitate us, and thats their business, Turner said. Were flattered.. In responses to inquiries about its home page design, the University has notified Web site developers of the copyright on Browns code. But the University has also directed them to two open source libraries Brown drew on heavily in developing its code, encouraging ...
By Cheryl Sullenger. Denver, CO - On this forty-fifth memorial of the Roe v. Wade Supreme court decision that decriminalized abortion in the U.S., this abortion horror story illustrates the human price of that tragic decision.. Last week, a local pro-life activist attended one day of the malpractice trail against late-term abortionist Warren Hern, who is accused by a former abortion patient, Jennifer D., of botching her abortion by leaving a piece of her babys skull inside her womb that resulted in a hysterectomy. The activist, who wishes to remain anonymous, visited the courtroom on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, for Day 5 of the proceedings. The observer took notes and reported to Operation Rescue about the days testimony. According to the pro-life observer, a psychologist, Dr. Robert Arias, a psychologist from Lincoln, Nebraska, who specializes in neuropsychology and behavioral sciences, gave testimony through a video deposition. He spoke of the plaintiffs pain and suffering that resulted from ...
SCULLY: (voiceover) A complete model or psychological profile of the death fetishist does not exist. Extrapolating from material on file at the FBIs Behavioral Science Unit, the compulsion is the result of a complex misplacement of values and a deviation from cultural norms and societal mores - often accompanied by extreme alienation from normal social interaction and traditional avenues for interaction with others. He is more likely to be white, male and of average to above average intelligence. Cases of fetishists with IQs over 150 have been documented. The progression of the pathology can be traced from the fantasy stage to the eventual acting out of fetishistic impulses, including opportunistic homicide.. Agent Mulder believes strongly that the suspect in this case is escalating toward this action. It is my opinion from reading these case files that death fetishism may play a stronger role than suspected in cases of serial murder. That once he begins to murder, it is the killing that draws ...

I spoke not too long ago at numerous venues on behavioural economics, behavioural science, and health. Considering that 2010, health care prices across the whole health care program have grown at the slowest rate in 50 years. The thought of living without universal health coverage terrifies me-but it was not with out opposition when it was introduced back in the 60s: medical doctors and nurses went on strike and had to be mandated back to function by the government. It is nonetheless extremely critical to eat wholesome meals, so that (of course) does not imply consuming pizza each and every evening or getting ice cream for dinner. Even though some Americans see this collective health umbrella as a weakness, I consider simple compassion to be a strength and would not want it any other way. Finally, even though purchasing insurance coverage will price some men and women in the brief time, it is a far better expense to bear than threat getting uninsured. Your income, your insurance coverage ...

Offered by 캘리포니아 대학교 데이비스 캠퍼스. Big data and artificial intelligence get most of the press about computational social science, but maybe the most complex aspect of it refers to using computational tools to explore and develop social science theory. This course shows how computer simulations are being used to explore the realm of what is theoretically possible. Computer simulations allow us to study why societies are the way they are, and to dream about the world we would like to live in. This can be as intuitive as playing a video game. Much like the well-known video game SimCity is used to build and manage an artificial city, we use agent-based models to grow and study artificial societies. Without hurting anyone in the real world, computer simulations allow us explore how to make the world a better place. We play hands-on with several practical computer simulation models and explore how we can combine hypothetical models with real world data. Finally, you will program a
This course introduces students to the field of social movements. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of theoretical ideas to case studies in order to enhance our knowledge of community organization and social change. Organizing - whether it is on a local, national, or international level brings people together to achieve their common interest and goals. The organizer faces a variety of tasks: recruiting participants, mobilizing resources, building community, planning strategies, assessing the political climate and conditions, and ultimately implementing collective action. In addition, an effective organizer must find ways to sustain motivation during setbacks, to address problems of repression and internal disputes, to overcome obstacles to mobilization and to productively deal with the media. This class covers social science theories that inform these skills.. ...

I am getting to work alongside ministry leaders and staff members who really care about me as a person and who are seeking to help prepare me for a lifetime in ministry. I am being taught not only how to do things, but rather understanding the heart of the church and why we do what we do. The Residency Programs holistic nature encouraged me to grow mentally, spiritually, and as a leader within an incredible support system. I have been blessed in more ways than I expected by how God moved in my life during the Residency.. Jomarie Manimtim ...
Because of the wide range of life threatening illnesses treated in intensive care, it has been a difficult area for managed care organisations and performance improvement staff to measure. Hence, cost-cutting efforts generally have been avoided, stated Jean Chenoweth, executive director of the Solucient Leadership Institute. However, this study shows that the pay off for improving quality of care and reducing costs is enormous for everyone, including the patients, the hospitals and the payors.. ICUs account for ten percent of hospital patient beds but twenty-five percent of a hospitals cost structure, explained Mike Breslow, M.D., executive vice president of Baltimore-based VISICU, which sponsored the study. The ICU is where patients are dying and where health care is spending huge amounts of money, so it is critical to assess what hospitals can do differently. U.S. hospitals treat about 5 million ICU patients a year, a number expected to double during the next fifteen years as the ...
The mission of the Worldview Leadership Institute is to promote a better understanding between different cultural groups and to equip Christians with the training and educational tools needed to complete the Great Commission. To help meet these mission goals we educate Christians about the worldviews and ideologies of the worlds many cultures and their religions. These worldviews are then contrasted with a Christian worldview so as to promote better understanding between cultures and to provide better opportunities and environments in which to share the Gospel.

More than 50 years ago, Alan Turing provided a theoretical explanation of biological pattern formation through a hypothesis of reaction-diffusion, whereby patterns, such as that for hair follicles or feather distribution, can form as a result of positive and negative feedback regulation of an inhibitor and activator. Turing models have since been used to account for patterns in many chemical systems but have not been successful in explaining biological patterning in developmental model systems such as the fly. Sick et al. have now examined hair follicle arrangements in mice that arise through the WNT activator protein and its inhibitor DKK and show through computation modeling that reaction-diffusion can account for the patterning observed.. Aims and objectives. This review of the literature intended to get insight into the international standards of quality of life assessment in palliative care, the conceptual and research literature addressing illness related quality of life and an examination of how nurse researchers define and assess this concept in the context of terminally ill cancer patients. Clearly stated goals for measuring quality of life as well as an understanding of the pragmatic and theoretical explanations for current trends in quality of life measurement are fundamental to this focus. Background. Most clinicians and researchers agree that the primary goal of palliative care is to optimize the quality of life of patients with advanced incurable diseases through control of physical symptoms and attention to the patients psychological, social and spiritual needs. Palliative care therefore is the achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families. Consequently, the outcomes of care should be ...
Researchers at The Ohio State University report the first-ever theoretical explanation for some strange semiconductor behavior that was discovered in 2004.
It has been recognized that matrix diffusion is an important process for retarding solute transport in fractured rock. Based on analyses of tracer transport data from a number of field tests, we demonstrate for the first time that the effective matrix-diffusion coefficient may be scale dependent and generally increases with test scale. A preliminary theoretical explanation of this scale dependency is also presented, based on the hypothesis that solute travel paths within a fracture network are fractals.
We provide a theoretical explanation for the observed quasiuniversality of the ratio of the longtime to short-time self-diffusion coefficients in colloidal liquids at freezing. We also predict that the mean-squared displacement at freezing, plotted against a suitably renormalized time, yields a universal curve showing a short-time subdiffusive regime and a long-time caged diffusion. We obtain $C_s(k,t)$, the intermediate scattering function, for all (k,t) and show that it implies strong non-Gaussian behavior in the probability distribution of the single-particle displacement at short times.. ...
The ball-milling process involves both fracturing and welding of particles. Particles of ductile materials are very likely to attach to each other when entrapped between balls. Therefore, conventional milling methods fail to grind ductile materials into nanoparticles. However, using brittle particles together with the starting materials, one can fracture and highly activate ductile particles through planetary ball milling. During the milling process, brittle particles are easily fractured down, and their sharp edges chop the particles of the ductile materials incessantly into pieces until both ductile and brittle particles are nano-sized (a process which is unlikely, if not impossible, to accomplish by ball milling of ductile materials alone). In this chapter, the effects of ball milling of ductile materials (e.g., graphite, aluminum, and zinc) together with a brittle material (here, NaCl), for preparation of metal nanoparticles or metal oxide nanoparticles are investigated. A theoretical explanation of

Obstacles to the Use of Social Science Analysis in Water Decision-Making, or Wheres the Demand for Social Science Input?. The paper identifies characteristics of both the public decisionmaking process and the methods of social science research that result in social science inputs having little influence on policy decisions. There are cognitive obstacles to the use of social science inputs; decisionmakers have trouble dealing with compound uncertainties that are left from engineering and social analyses; the adversarial climate reduces the receptivity to objective social science inputs. On the other hand, some of the weakness of the demand for social science input is due to the practices and behavior of social scientists themselves. At the cross-disciplinary level are opportunities in reducing adversarial decision processes, devising alternative institutional arrangements, interactive decision support technologies, and others.
