Article: Rethinking the Abortion Debate from a Liberal Christian Perspective - A reexamination of the abortion debate from a liberal yet Christian perspective based on 1.) the compassion I feel for all living beings, 2.) a general conclusion based on what is possible politically to care for potential unwanted infants and thus 3.) an overall feeling of compassion and regard for the misery versus the health of women as well as society.
Although the two main sides of the abortion debate tend to agree that a human fetus is biologically and genetically human (that is, of the human species), they often differ in their view on whether or not a human fetus is, in any of various ways, a person. Pro-life supporters argue that abortion is morally wrong on the basis that a fetus is an innocent human person[57] or because a fetus is a potential life that will, in most cases, develop into a fully functional human being.[58] Others reject this position by drawing a distinction between human being and human person, arguing that while the fetus is innocent and biologically human, it is not a person with a right to life.[59] In support of this distinction, some propose a list of criteria as markers of personhood. For example, Mary Ann Warren suggests consciousness (at least the capacity to feel pain), reasoning, self-motivation, the ability to communicate, and self-awareness.[60] According to Warren, a being need not exhibit all of these ...
The latest state bill in a surge of similar moves by Republican legislators seeks to ban abortions 20 weeks after fertilization. Republicans regained majorities in the state Senate and House of Representatives in NovemberâÄôs election and have reignited the abortion debate since session opened in January. Other bills in the House and Senate would limit funding for state-supported health programs used for abortions. Sen. Gretchen Hoffman, R-Vergas, introduced the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act on Monday to protect innocent lives, she said.

Alta Charo, a professor of law and ethics, talks with Steve Inskeep about how medical progress has changed the abortion debate over the years.
Ellen, I truly dont understand how Christians can be so-called "pro-choice" on this issue. I get its a complex matter, the whole "where does life begin" debate, etc. But I dont understand how we would leave the decision of life or death of a baby up to another human being, and with no regard to a common, social moral about the matter. We are civilized people, a democracy no less, that get the opportunity to speak to this issue as a whole. This is not Christianity vs. Pagan talk, this is a common basis for morality. Where it likely becomes religious, is in how different people value and view human life. The Peter Singers of the world would simply say there is no different in a baby rabbit than there is in human baby: "A rat is a pig is a dog." This attitude toward life is prevalent, and these are they that, thought they may not be "pro-abortion," they certain dont care too much.. Planned Parenthood receives government funding. They are the largest provider of abortion services. This makes ...
... is a concise and factual website summarizing the latest scientific and medical research proving early embryonic and fetal development. I have been a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist for more than 25 years and have seen many advances in the science of medicine but none more striking and dramatic than our knowledge about early fetal development. Seeing a baby s heartbeat using ultrasound only 4 weeks after conception and hearing the heartbeat of an unborn child with simple Doppler only 7 weeks after conception is verification that there is a human life at this very early gestation. It is now impossible to deny this overwhelming scientific evidence. And it is impossible to refer to a two-month fetus (the most common gestation age for an elective abortion) as a blob of tissue , as is frequently done at abortion clinics, rather than describe it as the fully developed human being that it has already become. I highly endorse and recommend this website to all who ...

Bacteria form the most abundant domain of the Prokaryotic kingdom and are among the earliest forms of life on Earth. Notwithstanding their small size and primitive origin, bacteria still have a tremendous impact on everyday human life. Over the centuries, research into bacteria have provided and enriched the fundamental biological knowledge due to their readily measured processes and effects on higher organisms. Although molecular genetics and microbiology were among the scientific fields that have mostly benefited from the discoveries made in bacteria, our current state of knowledge has gone beyond what anyone could have ever imagined. The present Research Topic aims to cover new and exciting broad aspects of the importance of bacteria to human life, both positive and negative influences. Regulation of bacterial gene expression, replication and segregation control mechanisms, cell to cell communication via quorum sensors, and the relatively recent finding of bacterial immunity via CRISPR, have led to

We can no longer base our ethics on the idea that human beings are a special form of creation, made in the image of God...Once the religious mumbo-jumbo surrounding the term human has been stripped away, we may continue to see normal members of our species as possessing greater qualities of rationality, self-consciousness, communication and so on than members of any other species, but we will not regard as sacrosanct the life of every member of our species, no matter how limited its capacity for intelligent or even conscious life may be... If we can put aside the obsolete and erroneous notion of the sanctity of all human life, we may start to look at human life as it really is, at the quality of human life that each human being has or can achieve. ...
It is a commonplace of Catholic theology that infants, even in the womb, who are killed from odium fidei, hatred of the faith, may be regarded as having undergone a Baptism of blood. The question we wish to raise is whether it is possible and desirable to regard all aborted children, without exception, as supernaturally included within the embrace of divine redemption, to the point, indeed, that the Church, by a solemn act, could declare publicly their martyr status, and invite their intercession.. A culture of death (John Paul II) is a pattern of assumptions and attitudes, found in both the sensibilities of individual persons and the structures of corporate institutions in civil society, the effect of which is to render parents, doctors and lawmakers insensitive to the sacred dignity of human life - especially unborn human life in its mothers womb. Such life, like all human life, already embodies, through the act of creation, the image of God, but it is a specifying feature of the unborn ...
In the abortion debate a lot of effort goes into addressing the exact point at which a legally relevant distinct human entity begins. Scientifically and Medically theres not much question as to when a new living human organism begins, it starts at conception. Period. But the Roe v. Wade case, and much of the legal…
Op-Ed article by Prof Paul Bloom says people turn to science to ask when life begins in hope that objective answer will settle abortion debate once and for all; says that question is not really about life in biological sense, it is asking about magical moment at which cluster of cells becomes more than mere physical thing; says it is a question about the soul; says qualities of mental life associated with souls are purely corporeal, emerging from biochemical processes in the brain; says moral qualities result from brain processes that emerge gradually in both development and evolution; says there is no moment when soulless body becomes ensouled one, so scientific research cannot provide objective answers to that question; drawing (M)
I was a teen when the 1st abortion debates came on the table/news. And even back then I realized one thing. Also I personally do not see it "right", - I cant have a say about it. Simply because I am a MALE. So for me the whole abortion issue is 100% an issue to be decided by the females. This said, I might have opened a can of worms with this. I think that some issues should be handed by referendums. And some issues should even then be given to be voted on by the members/gender/age-group to who the issue is relevant. Though I cant off hand right now list any other issue for the exception of abortion, - not enough coffee yet - I do strongly support single issue referrendums for the parties concerned only, and the rest of us to simply butt out ...
I read rather widely and this new law has barely gotten any attention. This law will strengthen the informed consent process around prenatal testing. The earliest signs of genetic mutations in human beings were discovered by scientists recently. Genomes from adult cells showed how embryonic development took place with a difference. Dont Miss the CES 2018 Highlights. Apparently, the two cell development of the human embryo was studied in depth by the researchers. What exactly occurred on a genetic level in embryonic humans remained pretty much a mystery. Yet now we know better due to further in-depth research. The blood samples from 279 human beings were examined. The genome gave proof of 163 mutations. Once these were pinpointed, the researchers used mutations from the first, second and third divisions of the zygote to gauge which part of the adult cells formed from the embryonic cells.. It was ultimately discovered that the first two cells have a different contribution to make to the whole body. One of the cells gives rise to 70% of the adult tissues.. The other one has a minor role and gives rise to 30% of the adult tissues. The role these ...
When does human life begin?. One of the more contentious bioethical and legal issues is about the beginning of human life. Nor is it difficult grasp why, for beyond political rhetoric it is a subject of considerable philosophical and legal debate and raises a number of questions which are profoundly difficult to answer. Biomedicine can roughly differentiate when life becomes viable, that is, at which point a fetus could survive as an infant if a mother gave birth prematurely; it can likewise recognize potential complications either in the development of the fetus or the health of the pregnant woman. Yet other questions are not as easy to answer, precisely because they tend to fall more in the spectrum of philosophy or personal belief: what constitutes a human being? What is a person? Is a potential life accorded the same rights as an actual life? For that matter, are there rights to begin with automatically, or are there criteria that must be met in order to procure rights? In short, questions ...
Two parental experiences in this regard have haunted me recently. First, the experience of Barbara Farlow as expressed in "Misgivings" published in the Hastings Center Report (September/October 2009) and Sam Sansalones story of how he fought to save the life of his daughter, Katya, who was born with Trisomy 13. For more about Sam Sansalones experiences see What Sorts of People and the Advisory Committee of Family to Family Connections at Alberta Childrens Hospital. Sansaloness experiences should cause each and ever person to think long and hard about medical care, medical ethics, and what it means to be human. Sansalones does not mince words: He maintains that "in Canada profoundly disabled kids are routinely-and intentionally-not treated with life saving intervention". Based on his experience, he thinks that when his daughter was born eight years ago "the clear mandate, at least at that time, was that you dont save these disabled childrens lives. You allow them to die-even though the ...
