Along the Pacific coast of North America, the marine fish, Porichthys notatus, is distributed as a northern nonluminescent population and a southern luminescent one. Bioluminescence capability is inducible in nonluminescent P. notatus by a single oral or intraperitoneal administration of a small amount of luciferin, a compound used by the marine ostracod crustacean, Vargula, as substrate for light emission. Once induced, the fish is capable of luminescing for more than 2 years. The results of the present study show that: (1) P. notatus photophores incorporate 14C-labelled Vargula luciferin: (2) the specific activity of the incorporated label is undiluted when recovered from the photophores 7 weeks later; (3) two chemical analogues of Vargula luciferin do not induce bioluminescence capability in the fish; (4) luciferinol, another close analogue of Vargula luciferin, induces a very weak bioluminescent capability in the fish; and (5) two key intermediates in the degradation of Vargula luciferin, ...
Hypoxia (low oxygen) exposure generally leads to decreased reproductive capacity, exhibited by reductions in testicular mass, reproductive hormones, and sperm swimming speed. However, in many fish species, reproduction occurs either periodically or exclusively under hypoxic conditions. In this study we assessed how hypoxia influences sperm performance in the plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus Girard, 1854), a species that lives in intertidal nests that become hypoxic during low tides. We exposed sperm from the same male to normoxic or hypoxic conditions and compared sperm characteristics and oxygen consumption between treatments. Sperm exposed to hypoxic water swam faster and consumed more oxygen than sperm swimming in normoxic conditions. Sperm swimming speed was positively related with oxygen consumption. For each male, the percentage of motile spermatozoa did not differ between treatments, suggesting that the same number of sperm were active but their performance was dependent on the ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - The regulatory role of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors in pulsatile urea excretion of the gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta. AU - Rodela, Tamara M.. AU - McDonald, M. Danielle. AU - Walsh, Patrick J.. AU - Gilmour, Kathleen M.. PY - 2009/6/15. Y1 - 2009/6/15. N2 - Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta, are one among a group of unusual teleosts that excrete urea as their predominant nitrogen end product in response to stressful conditions. Under conditions of crowding or confinement, fasted toadfish excrete the majority of their nitrogen waste in large pulses of urea (,90% of total nitrogen) lasting up to 3h. An earlier study demonstrated that cortisol has an inhibitory influence on urea pulse size. The present study tested the hypothesis that cortisol mediates changes in urea pulse size in ureotelic toadfish through the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and not the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). In vivo pharmacological investigations were used to manipulate the corticosteroid system ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - The effects of pH and the iron redox state on iron uptake in the intestine of a marine teleost fish, gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta). AU - Cooper, C. A.. AU - Bury, N. R.. AU - Grosell, Martin. PY - 2006/3/1. Y1 - 2006/3/1. N2 - In the marine teleost intestine the secretion of bicarbonate increases pH of the lumen (pH 8.4 -9.0) and importantly reduces Ca2+ and Mg 2+ concentrations by the formation of insoluble divalent ion carbonates. The alkaline intestinal environment could potentially also cause essential metal carbonate formation reducing bioavailability. Iron accumulation was assessed in the Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta) gut by mounting intestine segments in modified Ussing chambers fitted to a pH-stat titration system. This system titrates to maintain lumen pH constant and in the process prevents bicarbonate accumulation. The luminal saline pH was clamped to pH 5.5 or 7.0 to investigate the effect of proton concentrations on iron uptake. In addition, redox state was altered ...
Kingdom: Animalia. Phylum: Chordata. Class: Actinopterygii. Order: Batrachoidiformes. Family: Batrachoididae. This fish is the plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus). If you were looking at the top of the fish, you would see a plain grayish fish with a rather large mouth. One of the midshipmans interesting features actually lie underneath the fish. These interesting dots on the underside of the fish are photophores, which can produce a bright light pattern. Its still not clear what the light is for, but some speculate that the midshipman uses them to lure prey closer when hunting. The midshipman will hang in the water column and flash its light to attract prey items.. Interesting thing number 2 is how midshipman reproduce. Like most fish, males are responsible for maintaining the nest and attracting the females to lay their eggs. Male midshipman will hum for hours on end to attract females to their nest. The hum is produced by the fish vibrating their swim bladder, and can be so loud that ...
Reproductive success relies on the coordination of social behaviours, such as territory defence, courtship and mating. Species with extreme variation in reproductive tactics are useful models for identifying the neural mechanisms underlying social behaviour plasticity. The plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus) is a teleost fish with two male reproductive morphs that follow widely divergent developmental trajectories and display alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs). Type I males defend territories, court females and provide paternal care, but will resort to cuckoldry if they cannot maintain a territory. Type II males reproduce only through cuckoldry. We sought to disentangle gene expression patterns underlying behavioural tactic, in this case ARTs, from those solely reflective of developmental morph. Using RNA-sequencing, we investigated differential transcript expression in the preoptic area-anterior hypothalamus (POA-AH) of courting type I males, cuckolding type I males and cuckolding ...
Midshipman (foaled March 26, 2006, in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Owned by Stonerside Stable and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, as a two-year-old Midshipman won 3 of 4 starts, including the Breeders Cup Juvenile and Del Mar Futurity. Two weeks before his run in the Breeders Cup, Midshipman was sold to Darley Stable and as part of the sales agreement was transferred to trainer Saeed bin Suroor after the race. The colt was a leading contender for the 2009 Triple Crown but fell off due to a soft tissue injury. Midshipman made his 3 year old debut in an allowance optional claiming race on Sept 18 at Belmont Park, which marked his first start on traditional dirt. He won by 31⁄2 lengths over co-favorite Just Ben. Midshipman also ran in 2009s Breeders Cup Dirt Mile, where he finished 3rd to the longest shot in the race, Farthest Land. ...

It is your responsibility to make arrangements for housing while attending school. The unit staff will coordinate with FAMU and FSU for early move-in. Midshipmen must arrange for their school year living quarters (dormitory or apartment) before arriving for NROTC NSO. The NROTC Program does not provide or find permanent living quarters for midshipmen. Students planning to attend FAMU must consider that university policy requires that all "First-Time in College Freshman" live on campus. Students whose parents/family lives within a radius of 35 miles of the campus are exempt from this policy ...
It is difficult for toadfishes to swim across great distances, so populations can become easily isolated by geography and evolve into now species.. Also known as the coral toadfish and the Cozumel splendid toadfish is a species entirely endemic to the island of Cozumel, Mexico. Bonus Fact 1: Toadfish have gone into space orbin on two NASA space shuttle missions.. Bonus Fact 2: Gulf Toadfish who life off the coast of Florida make up a notable portion of the dolphins diet, approximately 13%. Scientific experiments have shown that the mating call of the toadfish alerts dolphin predators to the fishs location. Similarly, the sounds caused by the dolphin when hunting its prey alert toadfish to the location of the predators and cause the fish to silence their mating call. Male toadfish will reduce their mating calls by up to 50% when they hear the low sound of a dolphins "pop ...

The hum group was exposed to multiple Type I male midshipman calls looped together continuously. The noise group served as a secondary control group that was exposed to a type of noise called "brown noise" that mimicked the wavelengths of the hums, while not having the exact makeup of a hum call. The control group was a recording of the intertidal breeding zone of the midshipman without any calls from fish. In both the hum and noise groups, sounds were played from 100-500 Hz. However, the hum groups audio contained some harmonic noises at different frequencies that were not present in the noise groups audio. If the hum and noise groups were to yield similar results, this would indicate that the female midshipman ear cannot distinguish between reproductive and nonreproductive calls by wavelength. This would mean that the brain regions react to qualitative differences between auditory stimuli, rather than quantitative differences-wavelength. However, if noise and hum groups were to yield ...

Do you like a class system, or would you rather have a place that doesnt have a well-entrenched corporate ladder? In todays market, with companies scratching for good talent, employers are more apt to tap even entry-level folk to help out on big projects or be moved into a better position, said Lisa Calla-Russ, a senior recruiter at Snelling Personnel Services.

I love Annapolis. My friends and I used to walk all over it instead of going to the mall when we were in middle school. Wed watch the students reading on the grass at St. Johns College and imagine ourselves there, reading 100 great books. And wed watch midshipmen at the Naval Academy doing pushups on the lawn and imagine ourselves anywhere but there. Wed descend into the great naval hero John Paul Jones crypt and imagine his bones moldering in their great, gaudy marble sarcophagus. After our tour I know that, while the Navy wont admit any error, John Paul Jones bones were found in France in an unmarked grave 105 years after his death and were identified by comparing them to a bust of him. The claim is that the friends who buried him filled his lead coffin with alcohol and so therefore he was so well preserved that he could be recognized. Uh huh ...

My current research investigates how the stress response, and in particular cortisol, plays a role in mediating changes in transcription, binding and functional responsiveness of the serotonin subtype 1A (5-HT1A) receptor in the Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta. The 5-HT1A receptor plays an important role in maintaining the homeostatic balance between serotonin and cortisol by stimulating the release of cortisol from the interrenal cells when bound by serotonin. In mammals, there is a classical negative feedback loop whereby high levels of cortisol downregulate expression of the 5-HT1A receptor to decrease the release of cortisol in response to chronically elevated plasma cortisol. I am interested in seeing if this system exists in the Gulf toadfish, and also how the changes effected by cortisol are mediated. My long term goal is to relate changes in circulating levels of cortisol, serotonin and the 5-HT1A receptor to changes in reproductive activity. Additionally, because antidepressants are known ...

Nicks Cove Beach Wow, the alarm seemed to ring awfully early. I woke up before 5:00 a.m. to head off to our first collection site because low tide was at 5:30. The whole team, Dr. Joe, Andrew, Peter, Daphne and I got into the van and drove about 30 miles to our site. Dr. Bass, Midge, and a post grad student from UCLA followed us in their car. After we arrived to the site, we all put on our boots, gloves, and each of us helped take down the buckets that were used to collect the fish. We walked down to the edge of the shore and there were many rocks and boulders strewn about in the mud among a variety of mussels and other shells. All of us helped pick up the rocks and look for the fish that were there in the nests. Midshipmen fish mate at night in the intertidal zone. If the female is attracted to the humming of the male she then makes her way into the nest and one by one lays over 100-200 eggs that night. The male then ejects his sperm over the eggs and fertilizes them. The female leaves and the ...

What is the functional role, if any, of the OMC on song production? Although OMC stimulation can elicit electrical activity in song-relevant musculature, this does not necessarily imply that the OMC can influence song production. To address this directly, we carried out a series of perturbations during singing in the alone condition, beginning with bilateral electrical stimulation of the OMC. Strong stimulation resulted in song truncation, whereas milder stimulation (200 to 500 μA) often produced brief pauses (range: 638 to 1448 ms), with songs resuming once stimulation ended (Fig. 3D). The precise stereotypy of alone S. teguina songs (Fig. 1E) provides an ideal opportunity to distinguish between two possible experimental outcomes. First, the song could resume at the expected point in the sequence, accounting for the time delay (outcome 1; Fig. 3E), consistent with the hypothesis that the vocal patterning is primarily driven by a pathway independent of the OMC. In nonhuman primates, for ...
I thought the comment about Miranda and Grunt being supposed "perfection" was interesting in that you could probably apply it to almost all the companions. (This is in contrast to your companions in Dragon Age: A nearly novice Grey Warden, an apostate, a poet, a disgraced Qunari, an abomination, a failed assassin, a drunk, and a faulty golem. Yet oddly, I probably like all of them more than most of the ME2 characters.). ...

Enemy design is also a bit of a disappointment, as well. Regardless of era, your enemies generally break down into one of four categories: lizard grunt with pistols, stronger lizard grunt with automatic weapons, pig with heavy weapon, and pig that throws explosives. On the upside, you can easily identify what youre up against, but it gets kinda repetitive after a while. There are a handful of other enemy types, like the cyborg lizard that requires heavier weaponry to put down, or the weird floating brain with teeth…thing…that attacks with green ring waves that both damage you and cause your screen to get wonky, which is actually pretty creative.. My biggest complaint with Zero Hour, though, is that it does resort to some cheap tactics to pad the game out and inject some artificial challenge. For example, in the Victorian levels, zombies make up a hefty chunk of the enemies, and while they themselves pose very little threat, when they die, they emit gas that damages you if you walk through ...
