Update 5 p.m. Some Long Beach beaches reopened following sewage spill. Some Long Beach beaches have been reopened following closures due to hundreds of thousands of gallons of raw sewage that flowed into the ocean nine days ago on Sept. 15.. The Long Beach Health Department announced on Twitter that water testing levels showed that beaches east of Molino Ave. had reached safe levels, but testing continues for beaches to the west of Molino. Meanwhile, bayside beaches that werent initially impacted by the spill remain open.. - KPCC staff. 11:17 a.m. Long Beach beaches to remain closed for at least 2 days following sewage spill. Coastal waters in Long Beach will remain closed for at least two more days due to elevated bacteria levels, Long Beach Health officials told KPCC.. Three watersheds in Korea (Dochoncheon, Gongjicheon, Seolseongcheon) with different land cover characteristics were selected for non-point source pollution monitoring. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated, and runoff characteristics were compared through first-flushing and statistical analyses. The mean of the water quality parameters was the highest in Seolseongcheon during dry days among the three watersheds. EMCs of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total nitrogen (TN) were higher in Dochoncheon and Gongjicheon during rainy days, respectively. The upper Seolseongchun watershed showed overall greater values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total organic carbon (TOC), and total phosphorus (TP). First-flush analyses indicated that SS had the strongest and TN had the weakest effects on the first flush. BOD was the highest in Dochoncheon (urban watershed) and increased with increased number of antecedent dry days. Rainfall intensity appeared to affect SS runoff strongly

LONG BEACH - All the beaches in Long Beach were closed Saturday because of a 22,000-gallon sewage spill in South Pasadena, a Long Beach city official said. The sewage spill was first noticed about 8 a.m. and was contained by 10:40 a.m., said Nelson Kerr, Long Beachs recreational water manager. At about 2:30 p.m., county health officials told Long Beach health officials that sewage had spilled out of a manhole cover at Fair Oaks Avenue and State Street in South Pasadena and seeped into the storm system, which leads to a tributary that empties into the Los Angeles River, which runs to the ocean in Long Beach, he said. The estimated 22,000-gallon spill may have been caused by a grease plug in the line, Kerr said. The city health officer of Long Beach ordered the beaches closed for swimming to protect people from illnesses that can be contracted from contact with untreated sewage, Kerr said. The beaches will remain closed until water tests determine that water-borne bacteria is at acceptable ...

Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) is the maximum amount of pollution that a water body can receive without violating state water quality standards. Establishing TMDLs for water bodies that do not meet water quality standards has been required for several years. It was mandated by Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act (passed in 1972).. Pollution can come from many sources and activities dispersed throughout the watershed. We call this pollution non-point source pollution. In addition to setting a TMDL, the responsibility for reducing pollution from both point sources (pipes) and non-point sources is assigned to the offenders. Non-point sources include, but are not limited to, stormwater run-off, leaking underground storage tanks and septic systems, and soil erosion.. The TMDL process consists of the following steps: ...

Ocean Beach is a beach on the west coast of San Francisco, California, United States, bordering the Pacific Ocean. It is adjacent to Golden Gate Park, the Richmond District, and the Sunset District. The Great Highway runs alongside the beach, and the Cliff House and the site of the former Sutro Baths sit at the northern end. The beach is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is administered by the National Park Service.. During the late spring and summer, San Franciscos characteristic foggy weather frequently envelops the beach. The average temperature for the last 5 years has been 13.2 °C (55.8 °F)[1] However, the beach is popular with surfers and participants in bonfire parties.[citation needed] More beach-friendly weather occurs in late fall and early spring, when fog is less prevalent.. The water at Ocean Beach is noteworthy for its strong currents and waves, which makes it popular among serious surfers. The water is cold, due in part to a process known as upwelling, ...
Bacteria commonly used to indicate health risks in recreational waters might not be so reliable after all. Pathogenic E. coli were pervasive in stream-water samples with low concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria.. This is one of the unexpected findings from recent research that may affect how researchers and resource managers rely on indicator bacteria to determine if water is contaminated with bacteria that can make people sick. Although harmless themselves, fecal indicator bacteria such as nonpathogenic forms of E.coli, enterococci, and fecal coliform bacteria have long been used as an easy-to-measure surrogate to determine if pathogens are present.. "We saw little relation between pathogenic E. coli and fecal indicator bacteria criteria for recreational waters," said Joseph Duris, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Michigan Water Science Center scientist who led the study. "This is intriguing because we rely on indicator bacteria to tell us whether or not the water could make people sick," ...

The journey to Maravanthe Beach is as pleasing and restorative as the beach itself. While en route the beach, one travels through vast stretches, with the Arabian Sea flanking the highway on one side and the Kodachadri Hills in the distance on the other side. This enchanting drive comes highly recommended and rightly so. A pristine expanse of white sand, the Maravanthe Beach is breathtaking. Soak in the tranquil sunlight or in the mild waters for a perfect beach holiday. Like the other beaches in the area, visitors can enjoy water sports here as well including scuba diving and snorkelling. The waters are calm enough, except in monsoons, for swimmers to venture in. This beautiful beach town in the backdrop of the majestic Kodachadri hills gives one a true sense of serene escape.. ...
Hundreds of straws, plastic bottle caps and more than 85 spray paint cans were among the many items found at Bolsa Chica State Beach during the Surfrider Foundations first beach cleanup of the year on Saturday, Jan. 13.. The cleanup followed the first storm of the year, which flushed trash down local rivers dumping it onto the beach.. "It was a New Years resolution to be more friendly to the earth," said Stephanie Do, 22, of Long Beach, who came out with two friends to help in the effort. In all, about 200 volunteers combed the sand.. "Its the first one of 27 planned throughout the year," said Tony Soriano, chairman of the Huntington Beach/Seal Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. "Last year, we took seven tons of trash off local beaches." ...
Redondo Beach is one of the three beach cities in Los Angeles County, located in the South Bay region. The city has a total area of 6.4 sq. miles. Redondo Beach was originally part of the 1784 Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant that later became the South Redondo area.. Before the beach city housing boom in the 1990s, Redondo Beachs population mirrored much of older communities around Los Angeles. Redondo Beach had generally large numbers of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (esp. Hawaiians and Samoans) for cities with an excess of 50,000 residents. The gentrification process in the 1990s and 2000s displaced many Asians, Latinos and working-class whites inland into Torrance.. According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of Redondo Beach is 67,231 people. Only 14.1% of residents are Hispanic, 79.8% of residents are White, 10.5% are Asian, and 2.6% are Black or African American. 17.4% of residents are foreign born, and 21.2% speak a language other than English in the home. 54.3% of ...
If a beach is nice, clean and pretty abandoned, it never stays abandoned for long. With more and more people spending their holidays at the beach, at the more popular spots you have to compete for a place for lay down your towel.. But if a beach is remote enough and even a bit difficult to access, chances are that you can still spend a few quiet hours there without bumping into too many other beach goers.. Luckily, many holidaymakers are not determined enough to have their deserted and peaceful beaches to make the long (and possibly difficult) trip there, so if youre an intrepid traveler whos not afraid of a challenge, more lovely secluded beaches left for you! Here are some of the most beautiful secluded beaches in the world, for travelers who dont like crowds.. ...

The Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act (BEACH Act) signed into law on October 10, 2000, amends the federal Clean Water Act (CWA), incorporating provisions intended to reduce the risk of illness to users of the Nations recreational waters. The BEACH Act authorizes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to award program development and implementation grants to eligible States, Territories, Tribes, and local governments to support microbiological testing and monitoring of coastal recreation waters, including the Great Lakes, that are adjacent to beaches or similar points of access used by the public. BEACH Act grants also provide support for development and implementation of programs to notify the public of the potential exposure to disease-causing microorganisms in coastal recreation waters. EPA encourages coastal States and Territories to apply for BEACH Act Grants for Program Implementation (referred to as Implementation Grants) to implement effective and ...
Trails:. 11/05/2005. On a warm, beautiful day (very much above the usual seasonal temperature), Rosemary Cooney, Sarah-David Rosenbaum, dog Sonar and I toured this large beach. The parking lot is huge and the beach very popular. There are several sections of the beach since it goes for such a long way along the coast. Even though the park was not very full there were still a lot of people at the beach on this lovely day. The childrens playground was especially busy. There was also football practice going on on the multi-use green lawn field. We parked along the northern point of this peninsula and walked around the circumference of the Park. There are quite a few planted specimens in the park. We enjoyed the beach atmosphere. Dog Sonar played a bit with the many dogs on the beach near the twin Revolutionary War cannons. Dr. Patrick L. Cooney. ...
Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and enterococci are used to assess microbiological water quality in recreational waters. The use of FIB follows the assumption that their presence correlates with that of fecal-associated pathogens in recreational waters. The beach ecosystem is complex however and multiple factors can influence the concentration of E. coli and enterococci in the beach environment. Microbial communities within beach sand play a key role in nutrient cycling and are important to the nearshore ecosystem function. E. coli and enterococci, two common indicators of fecal pollution, have been shown to persist in the beach sand, but little is known about how microbial community assemblages are related to these fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) reservoirs. The first objective of this project was to harness the power of next-generation sequencing to profile the indigenous communities within beach sand and examine key environmental drivers of community structure. FIB
Sweeping the Beach Clean. Study finds no significant effects of mechanical beach cleaning at New South Wales beach sites. Sandy beaches can be messy places, littered with natural and anthropogenic detritus from algae to soda cans. On beaches that tend to be frequented by humans, beach grooming is often employed to remove trash, macroalgae, and other materials to provide a more aesthetically pleasing beach. Some studies have found that beach grooming can have negative consequences: removal of macroalgae can alter nutrient cycles, and the sieving and heavy machinery often used for grooming can cause physical damage or death to a range of organisms. But a study carried out along the central coast of New South Wales, Australia, found that sometimes beach grooming can be fairly harmless. The investigators examined small- (hundreds of meters) and large-scale (kilometers) effects of mechanical beach cleaning by evaluating a range of parameters at cleaned and adjacent uncleaned sites on the same ...

This landform is a sub-unit of Sonoma Coast State Beach, owned and managed by the State of California. At the northern terminus of Goat Rock Beach is the mouth of the Russian River, and the southern end of this crescent shaped expanse is the massive Goat Rock, an iconic outcrop of the Sonoma Coast, which is barely attached to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Goat Rock Beach is frequented by beachcombing visitors but usually not in high numbers except in mid-summer; there is some wading and surfing activity, although these uses are moderated by the rip current generated by a steep gradient into the water that leads to an underwater trench parallel to the waterline. The beach is also a regular resting ground for seagulls, river otters, elephant seals, harbor seals, and sea lions, the latter three species ...

Everyday families and members of the Long Beach community live, work, and play near the freeways, busy streets, and the port of Long Beach. Many of them who live in the surrounding affected areas of downtown, central Long Beach, and the Westside are unaware of the negative impacts that being in this area may have on their health.. As a resident of Long Beach, I know we dont necessarily think about we are inhaling into our systems daily. But the truth of the matter is, being next to these places causes us to inhale ultrafine particulate matter: a type of pollution is due to the emissions that come off of the vehicles from the port, the freeway, and traffic.. Inhaling ultrafine particulate matter is very dangerous to peoples health. One may ask, "what are we putting ourselves at risk of?" For those who live next to traffic, they are more at risk for cardiovascular disease, anxiety, learning disabilities and developing asthma. Pregnant women living near traffic are more at risk to have babies ...

The name was changed to "Las Canteras" just because one day a man came along and dug out some stone from the reef and that was it!". Chano Ceballos (helm of the Latina sailing boat El Porteño) was born on the 29th of May 1922, at half past six in the morning, at number 38 of todays Calle Sagasta, in the middle of a storm with the sea raging all around him. On this rough, stormy night, the swell of the ocean covered the isthmus from one side to the other, from the Arrecife beach to the beautiful beach of San Rafael which has long since disappeared. With this salty entrance to the world, it was impossible for Chano to dedicate his life to anything other than the sea, boats, fishermen and sailors.. He spent his childhood fishing and playing captains and pirates between the San Rafael and Arrecife beaches. ...

Wake County Environmental Services will begin testing the water in recreational beach areas as summer outdoor activity increases. During the summer season (late May-Labor Day weekend) Wake County samples fresh water bodies at public beaches and some private camps for E. coli and Enterococci bacteria in order to inform swimmers and others who come in contact with the water regarding bacteria levels in recreational water. These bacteria are plentiful in feces of humans and animals and indicate presence of feces, which may contain pathogens capable of causing human illness.. ...
Safer Beaches: Planning, Design, and Operation offers a systematic approach to planning, designing, renovating, and operating all types of beaches. It provides practices in beach management and protection and uses a needs-analysis approach to help you identify programming and activities that will maximize people’s experience at the beach.
Beaches are the result of wave action by which waves or currents move sand or other loose sediments of which the beach is made as these particles are held in suspension. Alternatively, sand may be moved by saltation (a bouncing movement of large particles). Beach materials come from erosion of rocks offshore, as well as from headland erosion and slumping producing deposits of scree. A coral reef offshore is a significant source of sand particles. Some species of fish that feed on algae attached to coral outcrops and rocks can create substantial quantities of sand particles over their lifetime as they nibble during feeding, digesting the organic matter, and discarding the rock and coral particles which pass through their digestive tracts. The composition of the beach depends upon the nature and quantity of sediments upstream of the beach, and the speed of flow and turbidity of water and wind. Sediments are moved by moving water and wind according to their particle size and state of compaction. ...
