This morning, OSI-Baltimore director Diana Morris joined Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen to announce a $200,000 grant to support the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) combat overdose deaths and reduce the stigma surrounding addiction. The grant will fund a rapid response team to help target outreach in real time when overdoses are reported in the city. It will also be used to develop a public education campaign to fight the stigma of addiction by encouraging people to think of addiction as a public health issue rather than a criminal one.. Citing Governor Hogan declaring a State of Emergency in Baltimore due to the opioid overdose crisis this past spring, Morris said that now is the time for key stakeholders in the city to begin to think innovatively about how to address this epidemic, because, she continued, in many cases, the status quo is simply not working.. OSI has worked with the Health Department to combat the Citys overdose epidemic for nearly 20 years, ...

The purpose was to collect data on the prevalence and incidence of mental disorders and on the use of and need for services by the mentally ill. The sites were areas that had previously been designated as Community Mental Health Center catchment areas: New Haven, Connecticut, Baltimore, Maryland, St. Louis, Missouri, Durham, North Carolina, and Los Angeles, California. Each site sampled over 3,000 community residents and 500 residents of institutions, yielding 20,861 respondents overall. The longitudinal ECA design incorporated ...

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is generally considered to be the third oldest (or by some other circumstances, the second oldest) zoological park in the United States, having opened in 1876, sixteen years after the historic Park itself was purchased and opened to the city public. For a number of decades in the 20th century, it was operated and supervised by the Baltimore City Board of Park Commissioners, and organized in 1860 with the first major city park at Druid Hill and later the city Department of Parks and Recreation, through their subordinate Bureau of the Zoo. It was later assisted by the organization of a group of supportive friends, animal and wildlife lovers in the Baltimore City Zoological Society, which performed a saving function in the late 1960s when changing demographic and historical populations in the surrounding communities around Druid Hill Park resulted in increased crime and some harassment incidents to the animal population, resulting in a few deaths and maimings, resulted ...

Vignarajah noted that juvenile justice is one of the most vexing problems that Baltimore currently faces.. Watch). On Tuesday, 31 schools in Baltimore Schools dismissed students early due to a lack of proper air conditioning.. The governor made the announcement at todays meeting of the Board of Public Works:. I know we are all pleased to see students returning to in-person instruction in every school system across the state. Unfortunately, this week, schools all over Baltimore City, including 31 just yesterday, had to dismiss students early due to the lack of proper air conditioning.. Its unbelievable to me that this is still happening after the Comptroller and I have worked together for the last six years to push to get every school air conditioned, and to provide record funding for every school to be air conditioned, and our nonstop efforts to hold schools accountable.. We were successful in requiring Baltimore City to reluctantly create a plan to finally bring air conditioning to all their schools, even against fierce opposition from legislative leaders. But in spite of them putting plans ...
In no way should anyone defend the Baltimore PD. The information weve seen and the video puts the target for the issue squarely on their backs. Ta-Nehesi Coates notes the numerous violations by the Baltimore PD (as he dinks and dunks around the edges of saying the protests are cool). But, lets consider: Baltimore is a 65% Black city. Of course police will have a heavier presence, simply because of patrol patterns. If they decided to ignore the Black community in favor of mostly patrolling the White and/or Hispanic populations, how would that go?. The city has a Black mayor, police chief, police commissioner, and 43% of the police department is Black. Eight of the fourteen city council members are Black. Not too mention the heavy hand of the Democrat Party in Baltimore. Exactly what have they all done for the Black community? This is much like Detroit, Birmingham, Gary, Indiana, Memphis, and so many other majority Black/Democrat cities with a heavy presence of Blacks/Democrats in government. ...

Surgeons at The Johns Hopkins Hospital have performed the worlds first total penis and scrotum transplant.. The patient suffered a devastating injury several years ago from an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan. He is now recovering at the hospital after the 14-hour procedure in late March, which repaired his abdominal wall, gave him a new scrotum and attached a donor penis.. We are optimistic he will regain near-normal urinary and sexual functions, said W. P. Andrew Lee, director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.. The patient, who also lost both legs in the blast, is expected to leave the hospital this week. Before he is discharged, his bladder catheter will be removed and urinary function is expected to be restored. Sexual function, including sensation and the ability to get an erection, could be gained in about six months, said Richard Redett, a Johns Hopkins plastic and reconstructive surgeon and clinical ...
In a detailed description of the 17 cases, Scott and Schirmer arrived at the following conclusions. While the intention of hypophysectomy was palliative (i.e. not intended to extend life), it could not be demonstrated to improve survival outcomes of these patients. Instead Scott and Schimer recognized that grade, timing of metastases and castration had the largest influence on survival times. While hypophysectomy could improve the subjective (symptoms) and objective (lab values) progression of many of these patients, they recognized that ...
