The occupation of Baltic states by the Soviet Union was another unpleasant episode in the history of these countries. It has been publicly confirmed by the governments of all three Baltic states that the Soviet Union had occupied Baltic States causing harm for their development. Although some people consider life in the Soviet Union to be good, because of employment it provided to its citizens, harmful things done by the Soviet Union are enormous. The development of Baltic states was slowed down during that time, because there was no flow of ideas from abroad. Planned economy caused insufficient supply of goods and people werent able to buy goods they wanted. Limits were put on the freedom of individuals, which also slowed the development process, because creative and innovative people were often put in jails. The intelligence from Baltic states mostly was either killed or sent to Siberia, which also harmed the development of these regions. The great part of soil was deprived because of ...

This thesis has compared the distribution of certain types of Viking Age Eastern Baltic bronze artefacts discovered on Gotland. This was done in order to observe different parts of Gotland´s interaction with different groups in the Baltic Sea region and how this might have influenced the identities and ideas of the individuals involved in the interaction. The objects and their finding contexts were subjected to a geographical analysis and applied to a map of Viking Age Gotland. Different distribution patterns can be observed for different types of artefacts, as well as a shift in pattern of interaction in the Baltic Sea region over time.. ...
my fathers father is Latvian, and the N1 haplogroup is not rare in the Baltic regions. In fact, the subgroup, N1c1, is more common in parts of Eastern Europe than it is in Asia.. Initially, this seemed to play nicely into a part of our ancient family history. There is a folk history, relayed to me be my Dad and my uncle Johnny, that Jostins blood may contain traces of Mongolian. The justification for this is that in around 1260, just before the civil war caused the Mongol Empire to die back in Europe, the Empire extended all the way to the Baltic States. It was at this point, my fellow N1c1-bearers hypothesise, that Mongolian DNA entered the Jostins line.. Unfortunately on closer inspection this tale is not really supported by the DNA evidence. The famous Mongol Expansion haplogroup is actually C3, which is the modal haplogroup of Mongolians. In contrast, N1c1 has existed in Europe for thousands of years, and is far to old and too wide-spread to represent a recent expansion. ...

Russia and NATO focus on different topics of the NRC meeting. As it turned out, the Singing Revolution was only the beginning of a march towards democracy. On August 23, 1989, an estimated two million Baltic people all joined hands to physically and symbolically link their three capital cities of Vilnius, Lithuania; Riga, Latvia; and Tallinn, Estonia. This human chain-referred to as the Baltic Way or, more locally, Chain of Freedom-extended over a length that exceeded 400 miles. While this may sound like a feat straight out of the Guinness Book of World Records, the message was serious: It was an expression of joint solidarity against decades of Soviet rule. The year of the chain marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact that annexed the Baltic States to the USSR. A growing number of activists, eager to bring the issue of illegal Soviet occupation to the world stage, organized the human chain.. Each state had its own pro-independence movement to help coordinate the effort: the Popular Front of Estonia (Rahvarinne), the Popular Front of ...

Orthoceras (straight horn) is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopod restricted to Middle Ordovician-aged marine limestones of the Baltic States and Sweden.[1] This genus is sometimes called Orthoceratites. Note it is sometimes misspelled as Orthocera, Orthocerus or Orthoceros (Sweet 1964:K222). Orthoceras was formerly thought to have had a worldwide distribution due to the genus use as a wastebasket taxon for numerous species of conical-shelled nautiloids throughout the Paleozoic and Triassic. Since this work was carried out and re cataloging of the genus, Orthoceras sensu stricto refers to O. regulare, of Ordovician-aged Baltic Sea limestones of Sweden and neighboring areas.[1] These are slender, elongate shells with the middle of the body chamber transversely constricted, and a subcentral orthochoanitic siphuncle. The surface is ornamented by a network of fine lirae (Sweet 1964:K224). Many other very similar species are included under the genus Michelinoceras. ...

This dissertation takes a step towards providing a better understanding of post-socialist welfare state development from a theoretical as well as an empirical perspective. The overall analytical goal of this thesis has been to critically assess the development of social policies in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania using them as illustrative examples of post-socialist welfare state development in the light of the theories, approaches and typologies that have been developed to study affluent capitalist democracies. The four studies included in this dissertation aspire to a common aim in a number of specific ways.. The first study tries to place the ideal-typical welfare state models of the Baltic States within the well-known welfare state typologies. At the same time, it provides a rich overview of the main social security institutions in the three countries by comparing them with each other and with the previous structures of the Soviet period. It examines the social insurance institutions of the ...

Latvia established a democratic courageous government with a multi-party system until 1934, when Ulmanis assumed power; the Communist Party was underground from 1919 to 1940. The loss of independence When World War II started in September 1939, the fate of Latvia had already been decided in the secret protocol of the so-called German-Soviet non-aggression treaty of August 23. In October, Latvia had to sign a dictated treaty of mutual assistance by which the U.S.S.R. obtained military, naval, and air bases on Latvian territory. On June 16, 1940, Latvia was invaded by the Red Army and on June 20, the formation of a new government headed by prof. Augusts Kirchen steins was announced. Lithuania is an EU member state which joined the Eurozone by adopting the euro on 1 January 2015. This made it the last of the three Baltic states to adopt the euro, after Estonia (2011) and Latvia (2014). Before then, its currency, the litas, was pegged to the euro at 3.4528 litas to 1 euro. All members of the European Union, except Denmark and the UK, are required by treaty to join the euro once certain economic criteria have been met. The Lithuanian litas participated in ERM II since 28 June 2004, and was pegged to the euro at a rate of 3.45280 litai = €1. Lithuania originally set 1 January 2007 as their target date for joining the euro, and in March 2006 requested that the European Commission and the European Central Bank conduct an assessment on their readiness to adopt the currency. The Commissions report found that while Lithuania met four of the five criteria, their average annual inflation was 2.7%, exceeding the limit of 2.6%. As a result, the Commission concluded that there should ...
My maternal grandmother told me that at the outbreak of World War II she encountered a Polish officer who had fled into Latvia. She told me she had no understanding about why the man was so terrified. She was to soon find out. In 1940-1941, the Soviet Union occupied the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and set about to crush the nationalism within those countries and to rid them of Anti-Soviet elements with an absolute terror. On the night of June 13th to 14th, 1941, thousands of people, men, women, children, elderly, infants were rounded up in a night of terror and shipped off to the Gulag. My mothers best friend N was among those deported with her family because her father was a judge. N was 14 at the time of her deportation. N and her mother survived the conditions in Siberia, her father did not. Later when N related her experiences, she said that when the Cheka showed up she was so terrified that she was about to be executed that she thought of killing herself by jumping ...

The Kremlin firmly rejects any such plans. But this may change.. Russian Federation says some 13,000 troops from Russian Federation and Belarus will be involved in the September 14-20 drills, below an global threshold that requires large numbers of outside observers.. Ukraine - which neighbors Belarus - is especially anxious by Zapad. The Baltic States and Poland fear that these monikers are just poorly disguised terms for their own countries.. There is an information war going on for public opinion in NATO-member states too, with Western governments keen to bolster their case for increasing military spending to counter a resurgent Russian military. Such a scenario would require an additional collective response from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, in particular to include additional assets deployed to the region, as well as strengthening the logistical infrastructure to facilitate reinforcement.. Ukraines President Petro Poroshenko has warned - while speaking in the countrys parliament - ...
No risk to health is posed by direct contact with diseased animals or from eating food made from infected domestic pigs or wild boar.. The ASF pathogen is a virus which infects domestic pigs and wild boar and which leads to a severe, often lethal, disease in these animals. It is transferred via direct contact or with excretions from infected animals, or through ticks. The ASF virus is endemic to infected wild animals in Africa, but there have also repeatedly been outbreaks in southern Europe. The pathogen has been spreading north-westwards since 2007 from Georgia through Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. Cases of ASF have been registered in wild boar along with outbreaks in domestic pigs in the Baltic states since 2014. The virus has also been detected in Romania, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. In September 2018, the pathogen was also found in wild boars in Belgium and thus for the first time in Western Europe. On 10 September 2020, the ASF virus has been detected for the first time in ...
Use: The Gotland Peltsheep (pälsfår) or modern Gotland has been developed in Sweden since the 1920s through controlled breeding and intensive selection, producing a true multipurpose long wool sheep, yielding good flavored close-grained meat, furskins and soft silky lustrous fleece. Gotland sheep may also be found in Sweden, Britain, Denmark, New Zealand and Australia History: The breed was first established on the Swedish island of Gotland by the Vikings with Karakul and Romanov sheep brought back from expeditions deep into Russia and crossed with the native landrace sheep. The Vikings were great seafarers as well as sheep farmers and took these animals on their extensive voyages to provide meat and skins along the route. Hence the spread of these Northern short-tailed sheep and the development into related breeds such as Goth sheep, Icelandic, Finnsheep, Shetland, North Ronaldsay and Manx. Primitive horned Gotland sheep still exist on the island of Gotland today. Conformation: With a calm, ...
My dissertation shows that Proto-Germanic, Proto-Scandinavian, Proto-Finnic and Proto-Sami all date to different periods of the Iron Age. I argue that the present study along with my earlier published research also proves that a (West-)Uralic language - the pre-form of the Finnic and Samic languages - was spoken in the region of the present-day Finland in the Bronze Age, but not earlier than that. In the centuries before the Common Era, Proto-Sami was spoken in the whole region of what is now called Finland, excluding Lapland. At the beginning of the Common Era, Proto-Sami was spoken in the whole region of Finland, including Southern Finland, from where the Sami idiom first began to recede. An archaic (Northwest-)Indo-European language and a subsequently extinct Paleo-European language were likely spoken in what is now called Finland and Estonia, when the linguistic ancestors of the Finns and the Sami arrived in the eastern and northern Baltic Sea region from the Volga-Kama region probably at ...

The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) expedition 347 cored sediments from different settings of the Baltic Sea covering the last glacial-interglacial cycle. The main aim was to study the geological development of the Baltic Sea in relation to the extreme climate variability of the region with changing ice cover and major shifts in temperature, salinity, and biological communities. Using the Greatship Manisha as a European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) mission-specific platform, we recovered 1.6 km of core from nine sites of which four were additionally cored for microbiology. The sites covered the gateway to the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, several sub-basins in the southern Baltic Sea, a deep basin in the central Baltic Sea, and a river estuary in the north.. The waxing and waning of the Scandinavian ice sheet has profoundly affected the Baltic Sea sediments. During theWeichselian, progressing glaciers reshaped the submarine landscape and displaced sedimentary deposits ...

Nutrient enrichment is generally regarded as the greatest threat to the ecosystems of the Baltic Sea. This thesis demonstrates that the loads of nitrogen and phosphorus in the rivers in the Baltic Sea drainage basin are larger than previously assumed and by far exceed the size of the loads that reach the sea by way of other pathways, i.e. atmospheric deposition, nitrogen fixation, and direct discharges from urban areas and industries on the coast. In addition, examination of time series of nutrient concentrations and runoff for more than 100 rivers showed that, despite considerable changes in land-based activities in several parts of the drainage basin, the riverine loads of nutrients were fairly constant during the time period 1970-1993. Case studies of riverine loads of nitrogen in Latvia and Sweden confirmed that the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that control the riverine export of nutrients have a substantial inertia. In Latvia, the dramatic reduction in the application of fertilisers ...

Finland is a strong contender forthe location of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal tohelp eastern Baltic region countries cut dependence on gasimports from Russia, a study for the European Commission showedon Friday.
The Nord Stream natural gas pipeline has been a controversial project. The debate was primarily escalated by Polands strong negative reaction to the project in the spring of 2006 over safety and security and then alternated back and forth in Europe until the approval by the nations most concerned in the Baltic region during the autumn of 2009.In the case study an approach is used that primarily maps out the media image of the various viewpoints that deal with the pipeline and how these viewpoints position themselves, primarily through political and environmental dimensions. Simultaneously theres an attempt to map out the spatial spread of the media image views as to the proximity and distance to the pipeline in Sweden, Poland and Germany. A key question is whether distance or proximity to a large facility can affect peoples attitudes.A parallel focus of the study is to explore the role of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline in the cross-border hinterland region of Szczecin-Świnoujście. The ...
The Biosystems Engineering aims to become the leading annual conference in Baltic region in fields related to traditional and modern engineering techniques and technical solutions applied to biological systems.
The project SIGNAL addresses the crucial question of the eutrophication sources and what impact additional nitrogen has on the productivity in remote regions. The investigation will be carried out in the Baltic sea where the impact of eutrophication is one of the main threats to the ecosystem due to the 80 million people living in its watershed. The nitrogen input from the rivers, the atmosphere and N2 fixing cyanobacteria will be qualitatively and quantitatively assessed. This task will be accomplished through regular measurements in the mouths of several rivers, and in the precipitation. Stable isotope ratios of the most important elements are indicating eutrophication from various sources and have not been used simultaneously. However previous studies proved the utility of stable isotope ratios as indicators of external nitrogen inputs(.eg. fertilizer and soil runoff) and that they allow the identification of pathways through the ecosystem. Finally the role of the imported nitrogen for the ...

ABSTRACT: Denitrification in the sediments of the open northern Baltic Sea was measured using the isotope pairing method. The highest denitrification activity was found in the central Gulf of Finland, where denitrification varied between 150 and 650 µmol N m-2 d-1. The bulk of the denitrification was coupled to the NO3- production by nitrification. The mass of benthic fauna was found to be the most significant factor affecting the rate of denitrification. Denitrification rate was highest in late summer and early autumn. Calculated as an average for the Gulf of Finland, the denitrification rate obtained in the present study is 45 kt N yr-1. This gives a release of ca 30% of the external N input by denitrification. ...
The mouthpiece of the ruling Chinese Communist Party asserts that Russia humiliated an arrogant United States with its warplane passes near a U.S. missile destroyer in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday, an incident that the Pentagon described as a simulated attack.. Video released by the U.S. military yesterday shows two Sukhoi SU-24 warplanes conducting repeated close attack passes near a U.S. guided missile destroyer which was located at only about 70 nautical miles away from Russian territory.. U.S. military officials later described the maneuvers as some of the most aggressive interactions in recent memory.. However, an editorial in the Global Times, an official mouthpiece for Chinas ruling Communist Party, characterizes the incident as a huge blow to American prestige.. The Russian pilots have demonstrated high professional skills to conduct such extremely dangerous maneuvers, states the editorial. The US military, which intends to provoke Russia in the Baltic Sea, was humiliated by its ...

In the outer coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, oxygen in the surface water reached saturation levels from January to April. In the bottom layer, levels of 5.5 mg/L (50 % saturation) were measured in the Bay of L beck in January. The other parts of this sea area had good oxygen values until March. In April, first signs of oxygen deficiency in the bottom layer (60 % saturation) were observed in the western part of Mecklenburg Bight, at 6 - 7 mg/L oxygen. Elevated oxygen levels measured in surface water of the inner coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from January to April 2006 resulted from higher seasonal primary production in spring. Monitoring in the area extending from Kiel Bight to the northern Gotland Basin in January/Februar 2006 showed good oxygen levels in the western Baltic Sea and Arkona Basin, including the bottom layer. Oxygen depletion with values of less than 2 ml/L O2 was found below 70 m in the Bornholm Basin. In the deep basins, hydrogen sulphide was found at water ...
The Baltic Sea is an enclosed basin that experienced a number of different salinity phases during the Holocene corresponding to the establishment of a connection with the North Sea. Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) in surface sediments and Holocene sedimentary successions from the Gotland and Arkona Basins were analyzed ... read more to examine their potential applicability as indicators for soil organic matter input, as well as their suitability for paleoclimate reconstructions. Our results show a marked change in brGDGT distributions and the branched and isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index. The transition of the Ancylus Lake (fresh) to the Littorina Sea (brackish) phase is revealed by a large drop in the BIT index and an increase in the MBT′5Me, which reveals a large shift in provenance of the sedimentary brGDGTs. During the lake phase, brGDGTs are presumed to be primarily produced by in situ production in the water column. During the brackish phase, in situ brGDGT ...
The vertical distribution of HCHs was measured at 3 stations with a clearly stratified water column (213, 259, 271). In the Bornholm Sea (station 213) the HCH concentrations of all HCH congeners in the deep water were clearly lower than the concentrations in surface water. At Station 259 (SE Gotland Basin) the difference between surface and deep water concentrations of beta-HCH and gamma-HCH was insignificant, whereas the concentration of alpha-HCH in the deep water was clearly higher than in the surface water. In the Gotland Sea at Station 271 the concentrations of alpha-HCH and beta-HCH in the deep water were slightly higher than the concentrations measured in the surface water. A new dataset of five years with the dissolved concentrations of p,p-DDE and p,p-DDT is used to estimate long-term trends in the study area. Since 2003 the exposure of p,p-DDE has ranged on a level of 4 - 5 pg/L, p,p-DDT shows a slightly decreasing trend. In 2006 the dissolved concentrations for p,p-DDT ranged ...

LATVIA: Tier 2 The Government of Latvia does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. The government demonstrated increasing efforts compared to the previous reporting period; therefore, Latvia remained on Tier 2. The government demonstrated increasing efforts by certifying more victims for the state-funded victim assistance program, leading two international anti-trafficking projects, and initiating the first investigation of forced labor within its borders in at least five years. However, despite these efforts, the government did not meet the minimum standards in several key areas. Courts continued to give convicted traffickers lenient sentences, usually resulting in no jail time. Officials lack of knowledge of trafficking indicators impaired proactive victim identification, particularly among women and children in commercial sex, and forced labor victims. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LATVIA Vigorously investigate and ...
Mark Colosimo, US Army Corps of Engineers/Johns Hopkins University Flows, concentrations and fluxes of Nitrogen and Phosphorus measured at the Baltimore Ecosystem Studys (BES) stream sampling stations along the Gwynns Falls urban-rural gradient and reference stations in the Gunpowder Watershed from water years 1999 and 2000 are discussed. The BES stream monitoring network includes watersheds at three scales, arrayed in a hierarchical design with forested, agricultural, suburban and urban land uses. A relation between land use and annual N load was apparent at some sites. However, the heterogeneous nature of urban watersheds was also revealed in this sampling of the urban hydrologic environment, attesting to the complex hydraulic system and land-water linkages that are likely to be operating. Urban sites with relatively low nutrient loads, suburban sites with high nutrient loads, watersheds with potentially high nitrogen retentions as well as watersheds with unusual water yields are among the ...
Loch Leven is in unfavourable condition. Attaining good water quality is critical to sustaining its many designated conservation features (SSSI, SPA, Ramsar site and NNR) in order to meet European Union Habitats and Water Framework Directive targets. High inputs of nutrients to the loch from its catchment (especially of phosphorus) have been identified as a key driver of these water quality problems. Long-term monitoring of the water quality within Loch Leven has been undertaken by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) since the late 1960s. The overall objective of this project was to assess the current phosphorus and nitrogen inputs to Loch Leven and provide information on their likely sources.. ...

Nothing about the Baltic countries have disproved Krugmans critique. I will focus on Latvia specifically, but I think the others are about the same: The miscommunication seems to be about the 24% decline in output that Latvia experienced during the recession. People like Aslund are assuming that to be a completely exogenous shock that would have happened no matter what, and then look at the modestly above average growth rates after the trough as evidence that the policies worked to help the economy. But what Krugman keeps pointing out is that a majority of the austerity measures and spending cuts came before that 24% decline, meaning that it made an already bad recession way worse than it would otherwise have been ...
