Wall lizards of the genus Podarcis (Sauria, Lacertidae) comprise 17 currently recognized species in southern Europe, where they are the predominant nonavian reptile group. The taxonomy of Podarcis is complex and unstable. Based on DNA sequence data, the species of Podarcis falls into four main groups that have substantial geographic coherence (Western island group, southwestern group, Italian group, and Balkan Peninsula group). The Balkan Peninsula species are divided into two subgroups: the subgroup of P.taurica (P. taurica, P. milensis, P. gaigeae, and perhaps P. melisellensis), and the subgroup of P. erhardii (P. erhardii and P. pelo- ponnesiaca). In the present study, the question of phylogenetic relationships among the species of Podarcis encountered in the Balkan Peninsula was addressed using partial mtDNA sequences for cytochrome b (cyt b) and 16S rRNA (16S). The data support the mono- phyly of Podarcis and suggest that there are three phylogenetic clades: the clade A (P. taurica, P. ...

The region of Macedonia and the country of North Macedonia are both located on the Balkan peninsula. The Slavs first came to the Balkan Peninsula in the sixth and seventh centuries AD. In the ninth century, the Byzantine monks[164][165][166][167][168][169][170][171] Saints Cyril and Methodius developed the first writing system for the Slavonic languages. At this time, the Slavic dialects were so close as to make it practical to develop the written language on the dialect of a single region. The Ohrid Literary School was established in Ohrid in 886 by Saint Clement of Ohrid on orders of Boris I of Bulgaria. In the fourteenth century, the Ottoman Turks invaded and conquered most of the Balkans, incorporating Macedonia into the Ottoman Empire. Although the written language, now called Church Slavonic, remained static as a result of Turkish domination, the spoken dialects moved further apart.[citation needed] The earliest lexicographic evidence of the Macedonian dialects, described as ...

The workshop aims at investigating the evolution of the entangled power networks in the Balkans in both trans-regional and intra-imperial Ottoman perspectives on the eve of, during, and after the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans. It seeks to address, discuss, and hopefully overcome deficiencies of scholarship to date that arise from strict disciplinary limitations, dominant historiographical trends, or tradition in national schools of history in the Balkans. The still dominant polarizing approach, which narrates how the Ottomans have conquered and subsequently controlled and administered the region, often depicts the main actors in the process in dichotomous opposition of invaders and invaded ones, thus discarding almost completely the perplex political and religious complexity of Late Medieval and Early Modern Balkans. The functioning power networks of the medieval Balkan elites confronted a similar system of hierarchical networks of dependencies, initiated and led by the Ottoman dynasty. ...
Academic journal article Serbian Studies. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century Macedonia was one of the most disputed territories and an apple of discord on the Balkan Peninsula. All of Macedonias neighbors and their national states set their territorial aspirations upon Macedonia as a way to solve their own national questions in this part of the Balkans.. They based their claims on both ethno-linguistic and historic rights of their own nations. Historic-geographic Macedonia was the most important and, in fact, the crucial moot point in the Balkans, where Serbian, Albanian, Bulgarian, and Greek nationalism was interweaving and struggling against each other. In other words, the territory of Macedonia was the crossroad where territorial claims and nationalism of east Balkan nations became interwoven and directed against each other.. National aspirations and disagreements with regard to Macedonia were the crucial reasons for the final political ...
5. Response and psychosocial support and other support services to JICWL and those at risk to commit crimes improved. In early 2008 MOLISA, CPFC Hai Phong & UNICEF agreed to conduct an evaluation of the pilot project. MOLISA requested technical assistance from UNICEF with both the formulation and implementation of the evaluation. The evaluation takes place two years into the operation of the project. It is therefore a mid-term evaluation, as the project period was intended to be from 2006 to 2010. The aim of this evaluation is to assess both the implementation progress to date, and the impact of the pilot project, using data from a desk review of existing reports; a qualitative survey and a field survey. This evaluation aims to gain an understanding of project operation, and to document project impact, relevance and effectiveness. It further aims to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the pilot project, to make appropriate recommendations to improve the implementation and impact of the ...
Violence was indeed all I knew of the Balkans, writes Rebecca West, all I knew of the South Slavs. And since there proceeds steadily from the southeastern corner of Europe a stream of events which are a danger to me, which indeed for years threatened my safety and deprived me forever of many benefits, that is to say I know nothing of my own destiny. The Balkan Peninsula was only two or three days distant, yet I had never troubled to go that short journey, which might explain to me how I shall die, and why. So it was that in 1937 Rebecca West, with her husband, set out to explore the Balkans, and particularly Yugoslavia, to see for herself why the fate of the Continent and of England has so often been threatened by the Powderkeg of Europe. The story she brought back with her annihilates distance, and touches every thoughtful reader.

U.S. Army ground forces have been deployed to the Balkans since December 1995. For these personnel, such a tour of duty involves a significant change in living conditions and separation from family and friends. The Army has spent more than $2 billion to build camps and implement services to sustain deployed personnel. Much of what has been spent contributes to enhancing soldiers quality of life. GAO examined (1) how the Army defines and views the quality of life of deployed soldiers in the Balkans and (2) the quality of life at three base camps in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Macedonia. GAO found that the Army (1) defines quality of life as the provision of equitable, adequate, and appropriate living, working, and leisure conditions consistent with available resources and political and military considerations and (2) is providing facilities in keeping with its established quality of life standards. GAO also found that most soldiers were satisfied with the living conditions and recreational ...

Wild boar (Sus scrofa), one of the most widespread wildlife species, has entered a stage of continuous growth in Europe, and could even be considered a pest species. We analysed microsatellite variability in 723 wild boars from across Europe, including the northern Dinaric Balkans. Our aims were: (1) to define the population structure of wild boars in the Balkans and its relation with other European populations; (2) to estimate effective populations sizes, levels of intra- and inter-population diversity, inbreeding migration and gene flow patterns; (3) to test subpopulations for bottlenecks; (4) to interpret these results in light of current knowledge about the demographic history of wild boars in Europe; and (5) to discuss the relevance of these findings for management and conservation. Strong population structuring was observed and 14 subpopulations were revealed. High genetic diversity was found, and besides the well-known identity of the Italian populations of Sardinia and Castelporziano, we bring
SARAJEVO - The Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zoran Tegeltija, met today with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, who during his visit to Sarajevo presented the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans.. Várhelyi said that the Commission has worked very hard to be clear in its intentions - the Western Balkans are the Commissions priority through strengthening relations and eventual, long-term, integration into the European Union, reports Klix.ba.. Because of the consequences of the pandemic, it is important that we work together to recover our economies and accelerate the regions economies. That is why we are presenting a plan with over 9 billion euros in grants and 20 billion euros in guarantees. The total amount represents one third of the total GDP of the Western Balkan countries. Certain accounts show that this injection could be expected to increase regional GDP by 3.6 percent, and there are those who say that growth will ...

The capital and at the same time the biggest city in the Republic of Macedonia has about 800,000 inhabitants. Needless to say, it is the most important political, cultural, economic and academic center of the country.. In the first records dating to the Roman period, reference is made to an urban union at the same site, on the banks of the River Vardar, under the name of Skupi. As a city of rich and turbulent history, Skopje has risen like a phoenix from its ashes after two devastating earthquakes (518 and 1963). It reached the peak of development during the last 50 years, a period of great industrial advancement, with the most outstanding branches being metal, chemical, textile, leather and graphic industries. Along with the rapid industrial development, Skopje developed in the fields of commerce, banking, culture and sports, which gave a different dimension to the city. In the last 20 years, this city has indisputably grown to one of the more significant cities in the Balkan Peninsula. Skopje, ...

An X-ray detector has a plurality of detector units and a pair of support members. Each detector unit has a base plate, a detector element secured to the base plate, and a retaining plate supporting the detector element. The base plate has a signal line and a ground line for delivering an electrical signal from the detector element. The retaining plate is positioned parallel to the detector element. The support members are set apart and extend along an arc the center of which is an X-ray source. Each support member has a plurality of slits (grooves) cut in the face facing the other support member and juxtaposed at predetermined intervals along said arc. The end portions of each retaining plate are fitted in one slit of one of the support members and the corresponding slit of the other support member, respectively. Therefore, the detector units are supported by the support members and the detector elements are juxtaposed along said arc and set parallel to the X-ray beams from the X-ray source.

In this thesis I will compare and contrast the two willow warbler subspecies (Phylloscopus trochilus trochilus and P. t. acredula) with differing migratory phenotypes (or migratype) in the context of their migratory divide and hybrid zone in central Sweden. Their migratory programs differ in the direction and distance traveled during migration. The northern willow warblers migrate south-southeast through the Balkan Peninsula to winter in eastern Africa. The southern willow warbler migrates southwest through the Iberian Peninsula to winter in western Africa. In this thesis I will also explore the consequences of hybridization for these two very closely related subspecies where they meet in central Sweden. In the first paper I investigate the role of population abundance in determining the location of the hybrid zone. Specifically, is there a region of low abundance associated with the hybrid zone? Further, is the hybrid zone located on an environmental gradient which might suggest that ...

Subregion level: VU Distribution: Widely spread dragonfly species, occurring both in the Afrotropical and the W-Palearctic regions, i.e. latitudinally from Cape Province to Scandinavia, and to Central Asia in the East. Established all over the Balkan peninsula except Albania.. Habitats type, Critical habitats, Limiting factors: Ecologically broadscoped insect, inhabiting slow-running and rich in vegetation localities of the rhithral, and, most of all lakes, marshes and flooded estuary zones of rivers (limnal). Those habitats in the Black Sea coastal region, situated in, or neighbouring, urbanized or otherwise polluted sites should be considered critical. Important limiting factors are also the drying-up coastal marshes, the industrial and anthropogenic water pollution, as well as the draining and realignment of upper streams of the rivers.. Biology: Larvae phytophilous, living in stagnant or slow current basins, rich in water high vegetation. Adults occur from V to X. Active predators in all ...

The Balkans are known to have a high level of biodiversity and endemism. No less than 15 taxa have been recorded in salmonids of the Salmo genus. Among them, the Prespa trout is found in only four river systems flowing into Lake Macro Prespa, three in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and one in Greece. This is the first comprehensive survey of all streams located within the Macro Prespa Basin, encompassing the whole taxon range. A large genetic sample of 536 Prespa trout was collected mainly between 2005 and 2007. The sampling included 59 individuals from the Golema river system, 93 from the Kranska, 260 from the Brajcinska, 119 from the Agios Germanos, and five individuals from the lake itself. These specimens were analyzed with six microsatellite markers and by sequencing the mitochondrial control region. Nuclear data were examined through multidimensional analysis and assignment tests. Five clusters were detected by assignment: Golema, Kranska, Brajcinska upstream, Rzanska Brajcinska

The debate concerning the mechanisms underlying the prehistoric spread of farming to Southeast Europe is framed around the opposing roles of population movement and cultural diffusion. To investigate the possible involvement of local people during the transition of agriculture in the Balkans, we analysed patterns of Y-chromosome diversity in 1206 subjects from 17 population samples, mainly from Southeast Europe. Evidence from three Y-chromosome lineages, I-M423, E-V13 and J-M241, make it possible to distinguish between Holocene Mesolithic forager and subsequent Neolithic range expansions from the eastern Sahara and the Near East, respectively. In particular, whereas the Balkan microsatellite variation associated to J-M241 correlates with the Neolithic period, those related to E-V13 and I-M423 Balkan Y chromosomes are consistent with a late Mesolithic time frame. In addition, the low frequency and variance associated to I-M423 and E-V13 in Anatolia and the Middle East, support an European ...

This paper discusses how disparities and in particular perceptions of inequality may have influenced political participation in Western Balkans over the last years. The arrival of the international crisis in the last quarter of 2008 has had not only economic but also significant political consequences on the region. While citizens participation through conventional channels has continued decreasing, there has been a rising opposition to political and economic institutions channelled by the emergence of new social movements. This paper shows that these political changes were largely motivated not by observed changes in income distribution but by peoples perceptions of rising disparities between rich and poor. This analysis is further supported by the empirical testing of a number of mechanisms that may shape the relationship between inequality and political participation such as expectations, changes in living conditions and corruption ...
