My area of specialization is Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology. My current research involves tissue culture of forestry species, particularly the ones that belong to the arid and semi-arid regions. I am quite intrigued by the medicinal plants. Some of the important medicinal plants of arid environments that I have been working on are: Commiphora wightii (Guggal), Balanites aegyptiaca(Hingota), Caligonum polygonoides. Besides these I have been working on developing tissue culture propagation protocols for biodiesel plants - Jatropha curcas and Pongamia pinnata. Prior to AFRI, I worked on genetic engineering of rice using Agrobacterium at Purdue University USA. I have also carried out research towards understanding salt tolerance in plants through functional genomics and bioinformatics approach using cutting edge technologies like DNA microarrays at Cambridge University. Two of my Ph.D. scholars at AFRI have been awarded their doctoral degrees and currently 4 are carrying out their ...

Anti-Candida activities of certain new oximes 4a-d and their respective aromatic esters 5a-l are reported. The tested compounds 4a-d and 5a-l exhibited better anti-Candida profiles than fluconazole. Compound 5j, namely (E)-3-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1-phenylpropan-1-one O-4-chlorobenzoyl oxime emerged as the most active congener, with a MIC value of 0.0054 µmol/mL being more potent than both fluconazole (MIC > 1.6325 µmol/mL) and miconazole (MIC value = 0.0188 µmol/mL) as a new anti-Candida albicans agent.

An in vitro ruminal gas production study was conducted to assess the effect of yeast supplementation on rumen fermentation of tanniniferous tropical browse mixtures prepared by mixing Berchemia discolor with Acacia brevispica, Acacia elatior, Acacia mellifera, Balanites aegyptiaca, Grewia bicolor or Zizyphus mucronata in a 1: 1 dry weight ratio. The six browse mixtures were incubated with buffered rumen fluid alone or supplemented with dried Japanese Sake yeast (JSY) or polyethylene glycol (PEG). Ruminal gas production characteristics were evaluated using the Gompertz equation. The JSY addition increased gas production volume (P, 0.05) and numerically increased the maximum gas production rate constant. Time to reach the maximum gas production rate was shortened by PEG addition as compared to the JSY and control treatments. It is possible that JSY promoted ...
Tribuloideae (Zygophyllaceae, Zygophyllales) is a warm-climate clade of mostly creeping herbs with an uncertain number of C4 species from at least two genera, raising the possibility of multiple C4 origins within this lineage. To delineate C3 and C4 distributions within Tribuloideae, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis using four genetic markers from 78 accessions of Tribuloideae. δ13C values from 68 Tribuloideae members detected 42 C4 species in the genera Kallstroemia, Tribulopis and Tribulus, and no C4 in Balanites, Neoluederitzia, and Sisyndite. All Kallstroemia are C4, while Tribulopis and Tribulus include C3 species. Two independent C4 origins are supported, one in Tribulus and a second in Kallstroemia; both lineages are NADP-ME subtypes. The C4Tribulopis clade occurs in a conflicting position that suggests a hybrid origin between ancestral Kallstroemia and C3Tribulopis/Tribulus species. Anatomical assessment did not show enhanced vein density in C3 Tribuloideae, however, relative bundle ...
The candidiasis caused by C. albicans is a public health problem. The abuse of antifungals has contributed to the development of resistance. B. morelensis has demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal activities. In this work the activity of the essential oil of B. morelensis was evaluated and for its two pure compounds with analysis of the different mechanisms of pathogenesis important for C. albicans. The essential oil was obtained by the hydro-distillation method and analyzed using GC-MS. The anti-Candida activity was compared between to essential oil, α-Pinene and γ-Terpinene. GC-MS of the essential oil demonstrated the presence of 13 compounds. The essential oil showed antifungal activity against four C. albicans strains. The most sensitive strain was C. albicans 14065 (MFC 2.0 mg/mL and MIC50 0.125 mg/mL) with α-Pinene and γ-Terpinene having MFCs of 4.0 and 16.0 mg/mL respectively. The essential oil inhibited the growth of the germ tube in 87.94% (8.0 mg/mL). Furthermore, it was observed that

01/02/2019. Accra - Rural communities in Africas drylands can earn a decent income from forest products such as gum arabic or tree oils. According to a new report from Action Against Desertification, rural populations have the opportunity to increase their incomes while reversing land degradation through sufficient support and investment, and developing value chains.. In Africa, trees provide a wealth of products and services that are essential to people living in or around forest areas. Even in the driest regions, there are valuable trees like the acacia that can be tapped as sources of raw materials. Acacia in particular produces gum arabic, which is widely used by the food industry, and Balanites, a desert tree indigenous to Africa, that produces oil that can be used for cooking, cosmetics, and soap.. Action Against Desertification is a European Union (EU)-funded initiative to combat desertification and land degradation across Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. The initiative helps rural ...

Background: Gene set enrichment analysis and overrepresentation analyses are commonly used methods to determine the biological processes affected by a differential expression experiment. This approach requires biologically relevant gene sets, which are currently curated manually, limiting their availability and accuracy in many organisms without extensively curated resources. New feature learning approaches can now be paired with existing data collections to directly extract functional gene sets from big data. Results: Here we introduce a method to identify perturbed processes. In contrast with methods that use curated gene sets, this approach uses signatures extracted from public expression data. We first extract expression signatures from public data using ADAGE, a neural network-based feature extraction approach. We next identify signatures that are differentially active under a given treatment. Our results demonstrate that these signatures represent biological processes that are perturbed by ...
Orobanche species are parasitic weeds that subsist on the roots of many dicotyledonous plants. These parasites form symplastic and apoplastic connections with their hosts and act as strong sinks for the uptake of water, minerals, and photosynthates, often causing severe damage to the hosts. Although the uptake of small molecules such as sugars and herbicides by Orobanche has been documented, movement of macromolecules between host and parasite has not been characterized. The objectives of this research were to 1) determine whether, and by what route, host macromolecules can be translocated to the parasite, and 2) engineer host resistance based on inducible expression of sarcotoxin IA, an anti-microbial peptide from the flesh fly (Sarcophaga peregrina). To address the first objective, transgenic plants expressing GFP localized to either the host cell cytosol (symplast) or secreted to the extra-cellular space (apoplast) were parasitized by O. aegyptiaca. Observations of green fluorescence in O. ...

Crude W.mrakii killer toxin showed a differential killing action against strains of Candida isolated from clinical specimens. No direct correlation between the site of isolation and susceptibility to the killer toxin was found. The status of the host and species-type would also contribute to the toxin-receptor interaction. It was found that at critical concentrations the killer factor of W.mrakii exerted a greater effect on stationary phase cells than cells from an exponential phase of growth. At low concentrations, the killer toxin produced a fungistatic effect on sensitive yeasts but at higher concentrations there was evidence to suggest that membrane damage accounted for the fungicidal effects of the killer factor. The cidal nature of the toxin was reflected in a rapid decrease in sensitive cell viability ...

What are the key principles of preventing yeast/molds - Candida? Most infections due to Candidaspp. arise from an individuals own flora (i.e., they are endogenous). Since Candidais a normal commensal flora, it requires a breach in the hosts anti-Candida barrier in order to invade and cause infection. The most common breaches in the anti-Candida barrier…. ...

The search for life on the edges of the global biosphere brought our attention to the extremophile organisms.. This area of the biosphere called the extremosphere is mostly unexplored and more than that untouched by humans due to the physical properties of the environment eg high temperature of volcanic lakes, high pressure of the deepest point of the oceans like the Mariana Trench, hyper-arid deserts like the Atacama desert in South America.. In my research project bacteria, fungi and archaea from these habitats are examined focusing on their secondary metabolites possessing biological activity such as compounds with cytostatic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-arrhythmic properties.. ...
