The satellite images of the Bahamas before and after Hurricane Dorian show just how devastating the Category 5 hurricane was. The Red Cross estimates that as many as 13,000 homes were destroyed, leaving some 70,000 people in the Bahamas homeless on two northern islands. With the situation devolving into a humanitarian crisis, its clear the Bahamas need all the help they can get. Here are a few ways you can help right now-even if you cant volunteer yourself. First way: Donate to the Miami-Dade Community Emergency Operations Center (CEOC). This coalition of Florida community groups has teamed for Bahamas relief and is asking for donations for immediate disaster relief, including toiletries, diapers, canned goods, cleaning supplies, tents, water, and power generators. Volunteers are also needed. Second way: Chef and philanthropist José Andrés and his team are on the ground at four locations across the Bahamas to feed those reeling from the impact of Hurricane Dorian. Donations are accepted online.

His love for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas; his passion for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas; and his loyalty to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas were unsurpassed.. He urged those present to emulate the values and virtues shown including: patriotism, belief that Independence, once achieved, has to be earned; determination to put Bahamians first; insistence that the country is built by Bahamians; compassion for the poor and downtrodden; and insistence on Bahamians first.. In his tribute, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, said Mr. Hannas compassionate and bold heart was that of a patriot who hungered and thirsted for justice for his people, especially the more vulnerable and the poorest in society.. Like all giants, he was made of both the strengths, and the human fallibility to which human flesh and blood are heir.. He took solace and instruction from the classics he read, and from the healing grace of the Christian Scriptures, that to err and to falter, ...
Much of the diversity of dive options offered by The Bahamas is a direct result of the huge area that this nation covers. With its westernmost islands resting only 50 miles off the Florida coastline, The Bahamas stretches southeast over 750 miles. Contained within its boundaries are more than 100,000 square miles of water, dwarfing a land mass of a mere 5,382 square miles. This land mass is distributed between 25 islands or island groups, more than 650 cays (pronounced keys ) and some 2,400 islets and exposed rocks. There are active, professional dive operations on well over a dozen of these islands. Areas beyond reach of day boats and land-based operations are made accessible by a fleet of high-quality live-aboards, departing both from the United States and from strategic jumping-off points within The Bahamas. The Bahamas owes its very existence to the ocean and its creatures. The archipelago sits upon a platform of pure limestone that was created by marine sediment deposited over the millennia ...

The tropical Caribbean islands of the Bahamas are to get their first MBA programme, according to a report in the local Nassau Guardian. The programme will be taught by the College of the Bahamas in the capital Nassau. The College, which is aspiring to university status, will offer the MBA under its own auspices - other of its masters level degrees are offered with overseas universities, such as Kent State University and the University of South Florida, both in the US.. The programme has been designed for the Bahamian business sector, using local references and cases, which the college hopes will make it attractive to students who usually go overseas for study. It will also be less expensive than a traditional US course. The 19-month programme will cost $32,400 for Bahamians and $37,800 for non-citizens, the newspaper reports. ...
Charter skippers will usually have all the gear you need for big game trips and its easy to pack a travel rod and bits for reef trips - although local guides will usually have kit for beginners to try their hand with. However if you are fly fishing and fishing on the flats then its a huge advantage to have your own kit so here Farlows of Pall Mall present the essential guide to tackling up for saltwater fly fishing in The Bahamas.. The idea of heading away on a trip of a lifetime to The Bahamas for some tropical saltwater fly fishing never looks more appealing than on a cold, damp and miserable day! Wading a shallow sand flat in stunning warm, clear water with the tropical sun beating down on your back is the stuff of many our daydreams and the reality usually lives up to expectations.. The pristine Bahamian flats are true wilderness areas in every sense of the word and although the fishing is exciting and challenging its definitely about the whole experience and they are surely one of the ...

Marine deposits at +20 ± 3 m on the tectonically stable coastlines of Bermuda and the Bahamas support the hypothesis of a partial collapse of the Antarctic ice sheet during the middle Pleistocene. Beach sediments fill a sea cave at +22 m in Bermuda, and horizontal, fenestrae-filled beds crop out on platforms at two sites as high as +21 m in Eleuthera, Bahamas. Carbonate beach sands are bound by an early generation of isopachous fibrous cement that is characteristic of a phreatic marine environment. Amino acid racemization and TIMS (thermal-ionization mass spectrometry) dates constrain the age of the deposits to between 390 and 550 ka, while proxy evidence supports a correlation with oxygen isotope stage 11. This direct geologic evidence of a 20% decrease in polar ice during the middle Pleistocene has important implications for the stability of ice sheets during warm interglaciations. ...
The debate on capital punishment has become more intense. Public opinion overwhelmingly supports capital punishment but does the government of the Bahamas have the will and courage to enforce laws that are currently on the books?. Our national security and tourism product are being threatened by an epidemic level of violent crime including brutal murders, assaults and armed robberies. Bahamians and permanent residents are living in constant fear as an increasing amount of criminals daily terrorize our nation with home invasions, drive-by shootings, witness tampering, vigilante justice and in recent times the killings of innocent women, children and the elderly. Students enrolled in Geology 4841, a geology and geophysics field study course at Missouri University of Science and Technology, will spend nine days in the Bahamas studying the geology of San Salvador Island this May.. The course is led by Dr. David Wronkiewicz, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering. Dr. Daniel Stutts, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, will accompany him on the trip.. Students on the weeklong trip will gather data on geological formations and processes occurring on the island and their interdependency on biologic processes.. In the end, the students are able to draw a cross-section of the island and interpret how it formed, says Wronkiewicz.. The students will look at drill core samples and geophysical data to make interpretations on where water, oil, gas or mineral resources may be located.. San Salvador is a good environment to study geology, says Wronkiewicz, because it offers students a chance to study ...
A grant from the Chicago Zoological Society has facilitated eradication of black rats from White Cay. The project was a collaborative effort of the West Indian Iguana Specialist Group, the Bahamas National Trust, the Bahamas Department of Agriculture, and Zeneca Agrochemicals, Inc., which donated the rodenticide used in the eradication. Two cays that appear promising as potential sites for establishment of a second wild population of the White Cay iguana have been identified. Although they have yet to be surveyed on the ground, both look appropriate from the air, both are Crown land, and both have active seabird nesting colonies, a good sign that introduced predators are absent. W. Hayes and R. Carter visited White Cay in 1996 to obtain blood samples and other measurements from the iguanas and to evaluate their status ...

Recognized worldwide as a leading yoga training, the TTC began over 40 years ago and has graduated more than 35,000 people around the world. Swami Vishnudevananda was the first yogi from India to develop this kind of training program in the West, with the vision to not only develop successful yoga professionals but to also spread peace in the world through them. The TTC is a unique, profoundly transformative, and rewarding experience that is based on the ancient gurukula teaching system, which integrates the students daily life into the yoga training. For four intense weeks of ashram living, students strengthen their own yoga practice through self-discipline and awareness of the nature of mind, body and spirit. They also build a firm foundation from which to teach others naturally and with confidence ...
By Stacie Saraswati Dooreck. Over time, our experience of yoga asanas evolves beyond the physical - the postures become our teachers and companions, showing us our relationship with ourselves and the world. Enjoy this collection of stories submitted by Sivananda Yoga practitioners from around the world, sharing their in-depth connections with each asana of the Sivananda sequence.. I was blessed to be born into a family that was already introduced to yoga as it came to the West. They raised me vegetarian after learning its health and nonviolence benefits from the gurus. I watched my father do Hatha Yoga in his meditation room as I grew up. As for me, I didnt start yoga myself until my late teens. Despite being raised in a yoga family, I didnt begin my own practice until it called to me personally.. The first call that brought me to yoga was my neck. At age 17, it called me in pain from too much waitressing and working out in the gym. In the privacy of my room, I tried a VHS tape of a yoga ...

The Caribbean reef shark, Carcharhinus perezii, discovered by Alonso Garza, is a requiem shark of the family Carcharhinidae found in the tropical western Atlantic and the Caribbean, from Florida and the Bahamas through to Brazil. Its length is up to 9.84 ft (3 m). It is one of the largest apex predators in these areas. Despite its abundance, it is one of the least studied large carcharhinid sharks. Caribbean reef sharks typically are seen cruising the edge of the reef over deep water. They feed on reef fish, rays and large crabs. Females have four to six pups that are about 2 ft long at birth.. ...
The 1926 Atlantic hurricane season featured the highest number of major hurricanes at the time. At least eleven tropical cyclones developed during the season, all of which intensified into a tropical storm and eight further strengthened into hurricanes. Six hurricanes deepened into a major hurricane, which is Category 3 or higher on the modern-day Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. The first system, the Nassau hurricane, developed near the Lesser Antilles on July 22. Moving west-northwest for much of its duration, the storm struck or brush several islands of the Lesser and Greater Antilles. However, the Bahamas later received greater impact. At least 287 deaths and $7.85 million (1926 USD) in damage was attributed to this hurricane. The next cyclone primarily effected mariners in and around the Maritimes of Canada, with boating accidents and drownings resulting in between 55 and 58 fatalities. In late August, the third hurricane brought widespread impact to the Gulf Coast of the United States, ...
The effects of Hurricane Irma in Florida were the costliest in the states history. Hurricane Irma developed from a tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands on August 30. The storm quickly became a hurricane on August 31 and then a major hurricane shortly thereafter, but would oscillate in intensity over the next few days. By September 4, Irma resumed strengthening, and became a powerful Category 5 hurricane on the following day. The cyclone then struck Sint Maarten and the British Virgin Islands on September 6 and later crossed Little Inagua in the Bahamas on September 8. Irma briefly weakened to a Category 4, but re-intensified into a Category 5 hurricane before making landfall in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago of Cuba. After falling to Category 3 status due to land interaction, the storm re-strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane in the Straits of Florida. Irma struck Florida twice on September 10 - the first as a Category 4 at Cudjoe Key and the second on Marco Island as a Category 3. ...
The distribution of lionfish has spread from Florida south into the Caribbean. Since the early 2000s, lionfish have been documented in Bermuda and the Bahamas. Since the second half of 2007, they have spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean. Sightings have occurred in the Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, St. Croix (USVI), Haiti, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Dry Tortugas, Aruba, and Netherlands Antilles. They are now heading further southward into Mexican, Central, and South American waters.. So why does this matter? Lionfish are voracious predators that quickly adapt to eating new types of food, and they have no native predators in Atlantic or Caribbean waters. They are believed to be as abundant now as some native grouper species in the Atlantic Ocean. Lionfish have venomous dorsal, ventral, and anal spines that can deter predators and injure humans. They can reproduce year-round and are relatively resistant to parasites, giving ...

By Elisabeth Eaves. Shark hysteria came early to the Northern hemisphere this year. Markus Groh, a 49-year-old Austrian attorney, died in February after a shark bit him in the Bahamas. Shark Horror, ran the headline in a British tabloid. They are filling the waters off of Florida, announced an NBC news anchor.. Only a few of the hundreds of news reports added that in all of 2007, there was only one shark-attack fatality worldwide. In the last six years globally, sharks have bitten humans at a rate of 63 times a year, of which only 3.8 incidents a year were fatal, says George Burgess, who runs the International Shark Attack File. Shark attacks have increased decade on decade for the last century--but only because as the human population grows, more and more people go into the water. Its an odds situation, Burgess says. Of some 500 shark species known to humans, only between 10 and 15 have been implicated in biting people.. The real shark tale is that the marine predators have vastly more ...

On 28 November, Congress confirmed Capt. Nicholass commission in writing and established his pay at $32 per month (this document, signed by John Hancock, was the first one issued for the Continental Naval Service, predating those of other early officers including Esek Hopkins and John Paul Jones, both of whom were shipmates on Alfreds first cruise). Capt. Nicholas moved quickly. By the end of the year, he had raised five companies of Marines and then sailed with them under Commodore Hopkins to the Bahamas. There, in March 1776, he led 284 men in a nearly-bloodless raid on Nassau, catching the British entirely by surprise and capturing two forts, 88 cannon, 15 mortars and a huge quantity of military stores. It was the Marines first-ever amphibious landing and the most successful naval operation of the Revolutionary War. Capt. Nicholas was still embarked in Alfred during her pursuit of the British ship Glasgow off the Rhode Island coast on 6 April, and saw his second lieutenant killed while at ...

N2 - More than two decades of hydrography on the Abaco line east of the Bahamas at 26N reveals decadal variability in the salinity of classical Labrador Sea Water (cLSW), despite the long distance from its source region in the North Atlantic Ocean. Hydrographic time series from the Labrador Sea and from the Abaco line show a pronounced step-like decrease in salinity between 1985 and 1995 in the Labrador Sea and between 1995 and 2010 at the Abaco line, suggesting a time lag between the two locations of approximately 9 years. The amplitude of the anomaly at the Abaco line is 50% of the amplitude in the Labrador Sea. A similar time lag and reduction of amplitude is found in the high-resolution OFES model, ...
Days after Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados Dr. Delisle Worrell said value-added tax (VAT) has hurt that islands tourism industry, Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Darron Cash said the criticism should give The Bahamas government another reason to delay VATs introduction.. Last week, Worrell told The Nassau Guardian that he has seen declining enthusiasm for VAT in Barbados, adding that the tax is anti-tourism.. Worrell also said Barbados VAT system is a mess.. The recent comments from the governor of the Central Bank of Barbados provide a great example of good advice from a credible source, Cash said.. Dr. Delisle Worrells statements that in his country VAT has emerged as the anti-tourism tax should give the Christie government reason to stop, review and cancel their July 1 VAT implementation date.. If the prime minister and his dutiful junior minister (Michael Halkitis) were listening they would have already come to the conclusion that there is an overwhelming strong ...
