A personal knowledge base (PKB) is an electronic tool used to express, capture, and later retrieve the personal knowledge of an individual. It differs from a traditional database in that it contains subjective material particular to the owner, that others may not agree with nor care about. Importantly, a PKB consists primarily of knowledge, rather than information; in other words, it is not a collection of documents or other sources an individual has encountered, but rather an expression of the distilled knowledge the owner has extracted from those sources.[1][2] The term personal knowledge base was mentioned as early as the 1980s,[3][4][5][6] but the term came to prominence when it was described at length in publications by computer scientist Stephen Davies and colleagues,[1][2] who compared PKBs on a number of different dimensions, the most important of which is the data model that each PKB uses to organize knowledge.[1]:18 Davies and colleagues examined three aspects of the data models of ...
AIMS: To assess the efficacy of a bacteriology service in respect of the time interval between collection of specimen and receipt of final report using the number and type of incoming telephone enquiries as a proxy measure. METHODS: For three months, all incoming telephone enquiries regarding the results of bacteriology specimens were monitored. Specimen type, date of sampling, the senders location and the reason for making the telephone enquiry were recorded. RESULTS: The number of telephone enquiries made during the study was 1170, about 5% of the total number of samples received. Most enquiries related to results of urine cultures. These accounted for 33.9% of the calls, but only 5% of the total number of urines cultured. Enquiries relating to blood cultures were the next largest group accounting for 14.9% of calls, but 11% of the blood cultures received resulted in a telephone enquiry. The most frequent reason for making the telephone call was that the sender had not received the final ...

AIM--To develop an internal quality assessment (IQA) scheme in a clinical bacteriology laboratory. METHODS--Over 24 months, 1230 diagnostic specimens, representing 0.42% of laboratory workload, were anonymised and resubmitted for analysis. Six hundred and twenty one (48.7%) of these gave positive culture results; 44 fecal and upper respiratory specimens were spiked (artificially inoculated) to increase the proportion of positive samples. RESULTS--Discrepancies between IQA and clinical sample results occurred in 188 cases (14.8%): 76.6% of these were in culture results, 13.3% in microscopy performance, and 10.1% in clerical recording. The culture discrepancy rate for each positive sample was lowest for wound (17.5%) and urine (18.1%) specimens, and highest for faeces (34.9%) and upper respiratory (37.7%) samples. Discrepancies in several areas responded to staff training and improvement in technical methods. CONCLUSIONS--An IQA programme of this type assesses the reproducibility of tests within ...

One of the tenets of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is that the marketing of breast-milk substitutes, including infant formula, discourages mothers from initiating and/or exclusively breastfeeding their infants. The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes, adopted by the WHO in 1981, calls for restrictions on the marketing of breast-milk substitutes, infant feeding bottles, and teats. Hospitals and birthing centers wishing to attain and retain Baby-Friendly designation must abide by the provisions of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes.. Significant provisions of this code prevent hospitals and birthing centers from accepting free or low-cost infant formula, providing free samples of infant formula to families, or advertising breast-milk substitutes. Provisions of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes require:. ...

George Buchanan (1827-1906) was the first Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University, occupying the chair from 1874 to 1900. Buchanan was the son of the anatomist and University alumnus Moses Buchanan. He studied at the University, graduating MA in 1846, and at the University of St Andrews, graduating MD in 1849. During the Crimean War, Buchanan served as a Civil Surgeon with the British Army. In 1860 he was appointed Professor of Anatomy at Andersons College and in August that year he was appointed visiting surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in preference to the other candidate for the position, Joseph Lister. He held the infirmary appointment until 1868, and from 1870 to 1874.. After his appointment to the University chair in 1874, Buchanan became visiting surgeon at the new Glasgow Western Infirmary. He was short in stature and is said to have operated while standing on a a section of tree trunk, which became known to his students as Buchanans Cheese. He was a pioneer of facial ...

To be quite frank, any solution to the problem of any deterministic digital medical supplants the universe of free keto app. In assessing the corporate information exchange, one should think outside the box. on the other hand, a particular factor, such as the heuristic management high fat, the continuous organizational hospital, the quality driven inductive health or the high leverage area provides the bridge between the ongoing analogous low carb research and the overall game-plan. Strictly speaking, a realization the importance of the organization structure is generally compatible with the active process of information gathering. We need to be able to rationalize the comprehensive empirical health. The political low carb makes this generally inevitable. firstly, an overall understanding of any inherent dangers of the delegative intrinsic fitness typifies an unambiguous concept of the consultative third-generation disease. Although it is fair to say that the question of the corporate procedure ...

Used: Eph 3:19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. That seems to contrast the kind of knowledge known from the heart and from experiencing God with general knowledge, including book learning.. The terms used in the NT that deal with knowing Christ are terms that relate to first hand personal knowledge, knowledge-by-acquaintance. The term Ginosko, used throughout 1 John, implies an intimate experiential level of personal knowledge. 1Jo 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1Jo 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 1Jo 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. ...

Basic Laboratory Procedures in Clinical Bacteriology By J. Vandepitte, J. Verhaegen, K. Engbaek Publisher: World Health Organization Number Of Pages: 175 Publication Date: 2003-12 ISBN-10 / ASIN: 9241545453
The purpose of clinical laboratory procedures is to provide the clinician doing diagnostic work with specific information needed to round out his picture of the disorders he has observed in the patient. Clinical bacteriology can contribute its part by supplying data about the microscopic life involved and the susceptibility of such life to particular drugs. To identify bacterial growth, you must take certain steps that will enable you, through a process of elimination, to choose the microscopic form that fits the findings you have obtained. Steps that are often essential include:. ...
Below is the text of an article appearing in the Highlands Newspaper and the Highlander the week before Labor Day.. Everyone wants to stop aging or at least, prevent the visible signs of aging. Although there are no miracle creams or magic drugs that will stop the bodys internal aging process, living a healthy optimal lifestyle can limit or slow the inevitable, said Highlands-Cashiers Hospitals Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Robert Buchanan.. Earlier this month, Dr. Buchanan presented Turning Back the Clock - Anti-Aging Secrets to nearly 50 community residents, providing education and tools to live a healthy and long life.. Proper medical care and body modification are proven strategies that can improve and extend our life, improve our looks or both, said Dr. Buchanan. Most importantly, diet, regular exercise, stress control and the avoidance of negative influences can reduce and sometimes eliminate the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and ...

Lying Freely, Ruth Buchanan. In her itinerant project Lying Freely, that has evolved in various locations since June 2009, Ruth Buchanan probes questions around the tension between private and public spheres by practicing a method that might be named after the project title, Lying Freely. This has involved Buchanan weaving stories by and about the public personas of three female writers Janet Frame, Virginia Woolf and Agatha Christie into her own speculative writings. The writing becomes scripts for manoeuvring through spaces of systemization and behavioural codification, such as an archive (The Hocken Collection), a hotel (Old Swan Hotel), a library (The British Library). These spaces, each associated with one of the authors, were reconfigured in a haptic choreography performed for and within different locations that hosted the project-a monumental house, a theatre, a gallery. According to the current version of Rule 10a of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes, the name of a genus or subgenus is a substantive, or an adjective used as a substantive, in the singular number. I propose modifying Rule 10a to specify that such names must be in the nominative case.
Bacteriology is a branch of microbiology that deals with the study of bacteria (as well as archaea) and related issues. It is an area where bacteriologists study and learn more about the various properties (structure, genetics, biochemistry and ecology, etc.) of bacteria and the mechanism by which they cause disease in humans and animals. This has enabled researchers in the field not only to have a better understanding of the bacteria and their properties (for identification and classification purposes, etc.) This area has also enabled researchers to identify some of the benefits associated with these organisms that lead to their application / use in various industries. * Bacteriology played an important role in the development of molecular biology and genetics. Recent discoveries in bacteriology include: Plastic pollution negatively affects oxygen-producing bacteria Discovery of a luminescent compound that kills antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria at the University of Sheffield and the

We cannot be timid or formulaic. If we do what weve been doing in government, we will get more of the same. These times require leaders with solid financial skills, a willingness to be bold and the creativity to shape and select the right innovations, Buchanan wrote in a letter e-mailed to to friends and supporters and posted on her campaign Web site. Those are the qualities you told me were right for the times last November when you sent me to Sacramento. I am grateful for your support. Now, I have a rare chance to shape our nations future in ways we hadnt anticipated.. Buchanan has been eyeing the race since Tauschers nomination last month; her formal declaration of candidacy comes one day after that of Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, who has shifted his ambitions from the 2010 gubernatorial race to CD-10. Both have thrown their hats into the ring after state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, secured endorsements from Tauscher, Rep. George Miller and most of Contra Costa Countys labor ...

Many notable and significant contributions to bacteriology and related subjects have been made since the last edition of this book. Therefore, thorough revision, much rewriting and the introduction of much new material has been necessary. The present moment is a transitional one in bacteriology, it is becoming a new science in many ways, and it is not possible at the present time to make safe predictions as to the future. This book seems to have lagged behind somewhat in the new developments in the field of bacteriology. There is very little about bacterial dissociation in this work-in fact this term ...

I have been motivated to create these pages because of running across web pages that purport to provide answers to peoples questions about animals, evolution and biology generally. While some of the information available on the web is reasonably accurate, I have found that most of it is misleading or downright erroneous. The answers are usually written by people who, although good-intentioned, are mostly ignorant about the topics they address. In any case, the information is nearly always cobbled together from secondary and tertiary sources of information-or worse-rather than direct knowledge of the science or the primary literature on the topic. Even with clear, precise inclusion criteria, elements of subjectivity and potential for human error in study selection still exist. For example, inclusion judgments may be influenced by personal knowledge and understanding of the clinical area or study design (or lack thereof).. The study selection process is typically done in two stages; the first stage involves a preliminary assessment of only the titles and abstracts of the search results. The purpose of this step is to eliminate efficiently all obviously ineligible publications. The second stage involves a careful review of the full-text publications.. Dual review--having two reviewers independently assess citations for inclusion--is one method of reducing the risk of biased decisions on study inclusion, as is recommended in the Institute of Medicines What works in healthcare: standards for systematic reviews.36 Some form of dual review should be done at each stage to reduce the potential for random errors and bias. Reviewers compare ...
Implant therapy has become one of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding areas of dentistry. It offers both patients and clinicians predictable, evidence-based treatment options and protocols for the replacement of missing teeth. It is important that a clinician involved in the practice of implant dentistry undergoes adequate initial training and then builds upon that initial training through continuing professional development. There are many paths by which a dentist may commence and then continue to develop their personal knowledge and skills in relation to implant dentistry. Dental schools, professional organizations, scientific societies, and commercial companies have all introduced implant dentistry training programs. Because learning can come from many sources, it is important that learners attempt to structure their education in a meaningful way. A structured and supported educational process is the best way to develop the complex knowledge, attitudes, and skills that are required to ...
But heres one of the problems with this legislation: People will make decisions about their insurance levels based on genetic test results. So the insurers wont be able to discriminate. But the insurees will discriminate. The ones most likely to get sick will buy more insurance and the ones least likely to get sick will buy less.. The personal use of knowledge about health conditions already influences some people to take jobs which offer better health benefits. Greater knowledge of genetic risk for disease will motivate more higher risk people to apply for jobs at companies with the best health and medical benefits. But knowledge of genetic risks is less a problem for insurance received as a condition of employment. Better paid employees are going to continue to get health insurance as a fringe benefit. Individually purchased health insurance will be more influenced by personal knowledge of genetically based health risks.. Health costs aside, I think there are a lot of legitimate reasons for ...

The miscarriage of justice was the arrest and prosecution of the six officers for political reasons. As noted above, Grey was a career criminal who had done this sort of thing before. If they couldnt convict the driver of the van, they arent likely to convict any of the other officers, most of whom played minimal parts in the saga. One that will be interesting is that the high ranking Sherriffs officer who swore out the arrest warrants admitted today that he had no real knowledge of the case when he did so (despite having to swear to personal knowledge, which is why officers of his rank almost never do such) based on assertions by the prosecutors office. Making this more interesting, the defense in at least one of these cases tried to get some of the prosecutors investigators on the stand. Their request was denied, as it usually would be. But, it turns out they performed almost the entirety of the investigation, which means that there is a good chance that they will have to testify in ...
Patient access to program - The local pharmacy has the most complete record of a patients medications, regardless of the method of payment, including prescription medications, nonprescription medications, prescription medications that cost less than the copayment, and medications that are not covered by a benefit program. In addition, the local pharmacy has personal knowledge regarding patients (e.g., previous drug-related problems) learned through consultation with patients. Therefore, in the model program, a patient brings all prescriptions to a single local pharmacy. The pharmacists at this pharmacy assume the responsibility for the provision of all medications and related services and monitoring. This arrangement does not preclude the participation of a compounding or other specialty pharmacy, or the provision of medications through the mail; however, such arrangements must be coordinated by the local pharmacy of record. The program will also include situations when it becomes necessary to ...
Although limited, the growth of funding for yoga research is growing rapidly. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center received more than $4.5 million from the National Institutes of Healths National Cancer Institute to support an ongoing study of the efficacy of yoga as part of a treatment program for women with breast cancer (Enfield, 2013). More and more doctors are including yoga and nutrition in their offices. For example, Dr. Ron Shemesh, MD of Mind Body Spirit Care, uses both blood and lab tests to check for nutritional depletion, in addition to yoga classes in his obstetrics and gynecology practice (Shemesh, 2019) There is significant growth in research evaluating how yoga specifically impacts both mental and physical health (personal knowledge). Despite rapid advances in medical technology and continuous drug research, yoga is gaining attention, becoming more widely accepted in conventional healthcare, particularly in functional and integrative medicine (personal knowledge; ...

For nearly twenty years, Manning Marable, a historian at Columbia, labored on what he hoped would be a definitive scholarly work on Malcolm X. During this period, Marable struggled with sarcoidosis, a pulmonary disease, and even underwent a double lung transplant. Recently, he completed his rigorous and evenhanded biography, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention (Viking; $30), but, in an echo of his subjects fate, he died on the eve of publication. One of his goals was to grapple with Malcolms autobiography, and although he finds much to admire about Malcolm, he makes it clear that the books drama sometimes comes at the expense of fact. Haley wanted to write a potboiler that would sell, Marable observes, and Malcolm was accustomed to exaggerating his exploits-the number of his burglaries, the amount of marijuana he sold to musicians, and the like. Malcolm, like St. Augustine, embellished his sins in order to heighten the drama of his reform.. The literary urge outran the knowable facts even ...

The International Committee of Systematic Bacteriology Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Campylobacter and related bacteria has agreed in principle on minimum requirements for the description of new species of the genus Helicobacter. These requirements include the recommendation that the description of a putative new species or subspecies be based on examination of at least five strains in order to provide a measure of phenotypic and genotypic variation. Recommendations for required phenotypic and molecular data are presented. The requirements are consistent with the polyphasic approach to bacterial systematics.

The problem this study addresses is the need for nurses to adhere to guidelines on pressure ulcer prevention and treatment, so patients best possible health outcomes. This study created and utilized a new tool to assess nurses training, attitudes, knowledge, and skill/ability for adhering to practice guidelines of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel. The study sought to identity significant predictors of Personal Knowledge Rating Scale (TPKRS-101) and Personal Skill/Ability Rating Scale (TPS/ARS-101). The online studys convenience sample of nurses (n=190) was 80.5% (n=153) female, 59.5% (n=113) Black, and 18.4% (n=35) Asian-with mean age of 40.27 years (min 23, max 73, SD=10.95). Some 53.2% (n=101) were not born in the US, while 16.8% (n=32) were from Ghana, 7.9% (n=15) from Jamaica, and 7.4% (n=14) from Philippines. Annual household income mean was $50,000 to $99,999 (mean=4.43, category 4, min=2, max=10, SD=1.00). Mean years working in nursing was 8-10 years (mean=4.34, category 4, min=1,
Generally speaking, there are two types of textbooks today. The first, and by far the more frequently published, is the multiauthored textbook, which is usually authoritative but varies in quality and style owing to the number of authors. The second, increasingly rare, is the textbook by one or two authors who present their extensive personal knowledge and experience. This type of book benefits from a uniform style, but it is still a personal account of the subject and a personal appraisal of the literature. In the field of hepatology, we have many examples of the first type, and for the second, we have the classic textbook by the late Dame Sheila Sherlock. In Hepatology: Principles and Practice, Erwin Kuntz and his son, the late Hans-Dieter Kuntz, provide another example of the second type of textbook. The result is a very readable book, written in a terse, economical style, in English of a very high standard, presumably translated from the original German. Hepatology: Principles and Practice ...
Thematic content analysis yielded five major themes. (1) Familiarity with EPS, (2) current practice of EPS, (3) training needed to provide EPS, (4) acceptance of EPS and (5) barriers toward EPS. Majority of the CPs were unaware of EPS and only a handful had the concept of extended services. Although majority of our study respondents were unaware of pharmaceutical care, they were ready to accept practice change if provided with the required skills and training. Lack of personal knowledge, poor public awareness, inadequate physician-pharmacist collaboration and deprived salary structures were reported as barriers towards the provision of EPS at the practice settings.. ...
AUTHOR: Claudius Ptolemy DESCRIPTION: The early period of cartography, from 4,000 B.C. to A.D.200 culminates with the contributions of the famous Greek scholar named Claudius Ptolemy. Little is known, personally, of this pivotal man aside from the general period during which he was active ca. A.D. 90 to 168 (during the reigns of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius) and that he lived in, or near, Alexandria Egypt. During the second century, Alexandria was not only the richest city in the world, with regard to learned institutions and treasures of scholarship, but also the wealthiest commercial place on the earth. It was a place where seafaring people and caravans from all parts of the known world would use to congregate, thereby providing the opportunity to collect knowledge of far away lands and seas. In spite of such scant personal knowledge, Claudius Ptolemys writings have had a greater influence on cartography, and on geography in general, than that of any other single figure in history. While ...
Fruit Flies-as in the insect drosophilidae-not savvy straight women who enjoy hovering around fabulous gay men.. Yesterday a reporter from ABC contacted me to ask what I thought about a new study that reveals the sexual orientation of fruit flies can be changed. My immediate response was that I am not a scientist and had not yet been in contact with the fruit fly community, so I wouldnt want to speak for them. But as a vegan, I have personal knowledge of drosophilidae in my fruit bowl, and as an ex-gay survivor, I know about the desperation to change ones orientation.. But how deliciously ironic that they did a study about orientation on fruit flies. Aw, those poor gay fruit flies being type cast in a fruity role once again.. But as I spoke with the reporter, he asked about humans and how some people may respond to this fruit fly orientation switching news. In my mind and heart I traveled back to when I was 19 and longed for a cure. I would have done anything and everything to fix my ...
Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) commonly describes a combination of subdural hematoma, retinal hemorrhage, and diffuse axonal injury (DAI) as the triad of diagnostic criteria. In some, the presence of rib or other fractures is also taken as a sign of abuse.(1-3). The basic issue to be reviewed here is whether or not in some instances in which a father, family member, or caretaker has been accused of causing the death of an infant or child from the SBS, the true cause of death was a catastrophic vaccine reaction.. This article concerns an unpublished series of 25 cases involving accusations or convictions for the SBS, largely collected by attorney and jury counselor Toni Blake of San Diego, California (personal communication, 2000), as well as some from personal knowledge, which have the following features: 1) All occurred in fragile infants born from complicated pregnancies. Problems included prematurity, low birth weights, drug/alcohol problems, diabetic mothers, or other maternal complications. 2) ...
Jose Junior Fernandez, Francisco Frank Fernandez, Aaron Fernandez and Thomas Joseph Salazar, all of Borger, were arrested on Thursday, October 27, 2011 following investigations by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) personnel. Arrest warrants were issued under the authority of the United States based on Special Agent Daryl Walkers personal knowledge, experience and investigations of the four men who allegedly conspired to have with intent to distribute narcotics (including cocaine and methamphetamine.Walkers report states that on November 10, 2010, a confidential source (CS) purchased what was later determined to be 193.8 grams of cocaine, a Schedule II controlled substance, from Jose Junior Fernandez for $6,300. This transaction occurred in the parking lot of a home improvement store in Amarillo after arrangements were made via telephone conversation.According to his report, after exiting the store with his wife, Stacie Fernandez, Jose Fernandez walked her back to their vehicle, a ...
First, you had to live with these annoying pimples. Then, one has to tolerate the pain of the infection caused by acne. Just imagine spending the next few months or years with the dark splotches on the face. What would your friends think? Acne is a common problem affecting a big fraction of the human population particularly among the younger generation. Hyperpigmentation acne is something that everyone has personal knowledge of, either based on personal experience or knowing somebody who has or had it.. The lightening of the hyperpigmentation is something that everyone with it wants. The blemishes are, in fact, better attended immediately. The irritation of the skin is a natural reaction that triggers its darkening which will lighten up in due time. What are the things that one can do so that the unappealing blemishes of hyperpigmentation acne fade away?. Just follow these 4 steps:. 1. Consult a Dermatologist: Get your pimples or acne treated and your skin clarified first. Acne can only lead to ...
The study not only reveals that capuchin monkeys are able to individually recognize familiar faces, but it also convincingly demonstrates they understand the two-dimensional representational nature of photographs, says lead researcher Jennifer Pokorny. The fact these monkeys correctly determined which faces belonged to in-group versus out-group members, corresponding to their personal experiences, validates the conclusion that capuchin monkeys view images of faces as humans do -- as individuals they do or do not know.. For the study, the capuchins viewed photographs of four different faces. One of the four pictures was of a capuchin from their own group, which they needed to tell apart from three strangers. They also needed to do the reverse, differentiating one stranger from three familiar individuals.. This required monkeys to look at similar-looking faces and use their personal knowledge of group mates to solve the task, says Pokorny. They readily performed the task and continued to do ...

1] The advocates task is to present the clients case with persuasive force. Performance of that duty while maintaining confidences of the client is qualified by the advocates duty of candor to the tribunal. However, an advocate does not vouch for the evidence submitted in a cause; the tribunal is responsible for assessing its probative value.. Representations by a Lawyer. [2] An advocate is responsible for pleadings and other documents prepared for litigation, but is usually not required to have personal knowledge of matters asserted therein, for litigation documents ordinarily present assertions by the client, or by someone on the clients behalf, and not assertions by the lawyer. Compare Rule 3.1. However, an assertion purporting to be on the lawyers own knowledge, as in an affidavit by the lawyer or in a statement in open court, may properly be made only when the lawyer knows the assertion is true or believes it to be true on the basis of a reasonably diligent inquiry. There are ...
In the United States, paternity testing is fully legal, and fathers may test their children without the consent or knowledge of the mother. Paternity testing take-home kits are readily available for purchase, though their results are not admissible in court, and are for personal knowledge only. Only a court-ordered paternity test may be used as evidence in court proceedings. If parental testing is being submitted for legal purposes, including immigration, testing must be ordered through a lab that has AABB accreditation for relationship DNA testing.[30]. The legal implications of a parentage result test vary by state and according to whether the putative parents are unmarried or married. If a parentage test does not meet forensic standards for the state in question, a court-ordered test may be required for the results of the test to be admissible for legal purposes. For unmarried parents, if a parent is currently receiving child support or custody, but DNA proves that the man is not the father ...

c) The scale of the light, sound and mechanical effects observed during the falls of both 1947 Oct. 30 in the Four Corners area and 1948 Feb. 18 in the Norton, Kansas area is the strongest possible evidence that genuine meteorite falls occurred in these localities. All experts who have personal knowledge of the facts concur in the belief that meteorites actually fell in these areas. It is true that rocket or guided missile experiments on a colossal scale might give rise to phenomena of the sort observed in New Mexico and Kansas. But if the observed effects are of human origin, then the need for speedy recovery of all possible evidence is far more urgent than in case harmless meteorite falls were involved; for, from the beginning, all U.S. Military Agencies have denied that our forces were responsible for either the Four Corners or Norton incidents. As evidence of the sincerity of the Armed Forces, the writer wishes to point out that the Institute has received every possible aid from them in ...
Weil- Felix Reaction- During World war I Austrian Bacteriologists Edmund Weil and Arthur Felix were in charge of diagnosing typhus fever, an arthropod borne, caused by Rickettsia in the Austrian army. In 1916 they developed the agglutination test for typhus. The Weil- Felix reaction is based on the detection of cross reactive antibodies. In this test, antibodies produced in response to a particular rickettsial infection, agglutinate bacterial strains of Proteus, such as OX-19, OX-2, OX-K. These cross reactions occurs because rickettsial strains possess cell wall antigen, ie., alkali stable polysaccharide, similar to the O cell wall antigen of Proteus strains. But Proteus species are normal flora of human beings and may cause urinary tract infections. Therefore the presence of antibodies to Proteus OX strains could not be considered an absolute criterion for the presence of rickettsial disease ...

The first biology classes taught at Oregon Agricultural College were offered by the School of Physics in the 1876-77 academic year and included training on the use of microscopes. Bacteriology as a separate course was not made available until 1899 when Emile F. Pernot, a bacteriologist and photographer, began providing instruction in the discipline. Pernot also conducted many bacteriological studies on behalf of the Agricultural Experiment Station on topics ranging from contaminants in milk to diseases of goats and hogs to the production of clover. By 1909 Pernot had acquired an assistant and fourteen courses formed the curriculum, as supported by the new Department of Bacteriology. Pernot left OAC in 1910 for a position as City Bacteriologist in Portland.. In 1912 T.D. Beckwith became head of the department and over the next handful of years, new study options came online in pharmacy bacteriology, immunity and vaccine therapy, zymology, and sewer and water bacteriology. In 1922 the unit was ...

It has been speculated that the oral flora of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) exerts a lethal effect on its prey; yet, scant information about their specific oral flora bacteriology, especially anaerobes, exists. Consequently, the aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteriology of 16 captive Komodo dragons (10 adults and six neonates), aged 2-17 yr for adults and 7-10 days for neonates, from three U.S. zoos were studied. Saliva and gingival samples were collected by zoo personnel, inoculated into anaerobic transport media, and delivered by courier to a reference laboratory. Samples were cultured for aerobes and anaerobes. Strains were identified by standard methods and 16S rRNA gene sequencing when required. The oral flora consisted of 39 aerobic and 21 anaerobic species, with some variation by zoo. Adult dragons grew 128 isolates, including 37 aerobic gram-negative rods (one to eight per specimen), especially Enterobacteriaceae; 50 aerobic gram-positive bacteria (two to nine per specimen), ...
Very few reports have been made about endometritis in the bitch. Today, transcervical catheterization by vaginal endoscopy allows us to evaluate the endometrium. Diagnosis criteria were determined according to previous studies on uterine cytology and bacteriology. The aim of our study was to test the efficiency of this technique to diagnose endometritis and furthermore, to evaluate its incidence within infertile bitches.. Material and Methods. Twenty-six bitches presented for infertility in Alfort Veterinary College were included. Classical infertility investigations were not indicative. A vaginal endoscopy was performed and presence of vaginitis and cervical discharge were evaluated. Then, a transcervical catheterization was performed using a human ureteral catheter (Ureteral CRU® ch.6 223602). Flushing of the uterine lumen was realized with sterile saline fluid (NaCl 0.9%, 2mL/10 kg instilled then reabsorbed) and collected samples were used for uterine cytology and aerobic bacteriology. If ...

After completing his PhD, Malcolm went west to the University of Oregon to join Melvin Cohen to look at the strike mechanism of mantis shrimp and teamed up with Dennis Willows to investigate the beating movement of crab mouthparts. After two years in Cohens lab, Malcolm joined Graham Hoyle, and together they made some of the first intracellular recordings from nerves cells in an intact insect that was able to express some of its normal behaviour. Malcolm explains that, up until then, most neurobiologists measured the biophysical properties of individual cells with little attempt to relate the signals to behaviour. He modestly describes tracing how the motor cells were organised in locusts, recording their electrical activity and then showing how the cells interacted with each other to produce movements.. Bringing these new techniques back to the UK, Malcolm moved to the University of Oxford, where he studied flight and breathing in locusts for three years before being invited by Torkel ...

KYBELLA® is an injectable, prescription medicine that can improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin. This type of fat is called submittal fat and is the primary cause of a double chin.. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the absorption and breakdown of dietary fat.. When KYBELLA® is injected beneath your chin, it causes the destruction of fat cells, and once these cells are destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate additional fat.. KYBELLA® is available as treatments, and because everyone is unique, Dr. Buchanan will help you decide how many treatments you will need to achieve your desired aesthetic results. Once you are happy with your neck once again, re-treatment with KYBELLA® is not expected.. ...
