The incidence and etiological classification of valvular diseases were examined on 358 cases from 3,000 consecutive autopsies of more than 60 years of age. The incidence of valvular disease was 11.9% (358 out of 3,000 cases). Mitral stenosis was found in 23 cases (6.4%), of which 21 cases were rheumatic and the remaining 2 were mitral ring calcification (MRC). Mitral regurgitation was observed in 126 cases (35.3%): 69 of papillary muscle dysfunction, 26 of mitral valve prolapse (MVP), 16 of MRC, 9 of ruptured chordae tendineae, 3 of rheumatic and 3 of congenital. Aortic stenosis was noted in 33 cases (9.2%): 27 of calcified, 5 of rheumatic and one of congenital. Aortic regurgitation was found in 169 cases (47.2%): 112 of degenerative, 47 of syphilitic, 7 of rheumatic and 2 of aortitis syndrome. There were 6 cases (1.7%) of tricuspid regurgitation. Etiological classification revealed 6 cases (1.7%) of congenital, 36 (10%) of rheumatic, 49 (13.7%) of syphilitic, 27 (7.5%) of MVP, 69 (19.3%) of ischemic

TY - JOUR. T1 - Diagnosis and incidence of fetal parvovirus infection in an autopsy series. T2 - I. Histology. AU - Rogers, Beverly Barton. AU - Mark, Yvonne. AU - Oyer, Calvin E.. PY - 1993/1/1. Y1 - 1993/1/1. N2 - This study was undertaken to obtain additional information about the incidence and characteristics of fetal parvovirus B19 infection in an unselected autopsy series, and to assess the distribution and quantitation of inclusions in various organs. Autopsy records from 673 fetal and neonatal autopsies performed at Women and Infants Hospital during 1985 through 1990 were reviewed. Thirty-two cases of hydrops fetalis were identified, and, of these, 5 had parvovirus infection. This gives an incidence of fetal parvovirus infection resulting in hydrops fetalis of 0. 7% among all autopsies, and a 16% incidence among cases of hydrops. Thirty-five percent of the cases of hydrops had malformations; a muscular ventricular septal defect was noted in one of the 5 cases of parvovirus infection. ...
Physician-coded verbal autopsy (PCVA) is the most widely used method to determine causes of death (CODs) in countries where medical certification of death is uncommon. Computer-coded verbal autopsy (CCVA) methods have been proposed as a faster and cheaper alternative to PCVA, though they have not been widely compared to PCVA or to each other. We compared the performance of open-source random forest, open-source tariff method, InterVA-4, and the King-Lu method to PCVA on five datasets comprising over 24,000 verbal autopsies from low- and middle-income countries. Metrics to assess performance were positive predictive value and partial chance-corrected concordance at the individual level, and cause-specific mortality fraction accuracy and cause-specific mortality fraction error at the population level. The positive predictive value for the most probable COD predicted by the four CCVA methods averaged about 43% to 44% across the datasets. The average positive predictive value improved for the top three most
Background. Verbal autopsy (VA) is a widely used method for analyzing cause of death in absence of vital registration systems. We adapted the InterVA method to extrapolate causes of death for stillbirths and neonatal deaths from verbal autopsy questionnaires, using data from Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Nepal.. Methods. We obtained 734 stillbirth and neonatal VAs from recent community studies in rural areas: 169 from Malawi, 385 from Nepal, and 180 from Zimbabwe. Initial refinement of the InterVA model was based on 100 physician-reviewed VAs from Malawi. InterVA indicators and matrix probabilities for cause of death were reviewed for clinical and epidemiological coherence by a pediatrician-researcher and an epidemiologist involved in the development of InterVA. The modified InterVA model was evaluated by comparing population-level cause-specific mortality fractions and individual agreement from two methods of interpretation (physician review and InterVA) for a further 69 VAs from Malawi, 385 from ...

MODESTO, CALIF. The autopsy report on the deaths of Laci Peterson and her unborn son will remain sealed -- for now -- even though portions already have been leaked to the media.. Superior Court Judge Al Girolami ruled Friday that releasing the reports could hamper the investigation into Petersons death and prejudice public opinion before her husband is tried for the murder.. Scott Peterson, 30, is accused of killing his wife and unborn son last December.. Laci Peterson, 27, was eight months pregnant when she vanished just before Christmas. Her body and that of the baby -- whom the couple had planned to name Conner -- washed ashore last month in San Francisco Bay, where Scott Peterson says he was fishing when his wife disappeared.. Girolami is scheduled to hear more arguments Friday from prosecutors, who had asked that the autopsy reports be released to the public.. Their request came after media reports described portions of the autopsy results.. Prosecutors said those leaks were biased toward ...
Molecular autopsy or postmortem molecular testing is a set of molecular techniques used in forensic medicine to attempt to determine the cause of death in unexplained cases, in particular sudden unexplained deaths (for example sudden cardiac death). About 30% of sudden cardiac deaths in young people are not explained after full conventional autopsy, and are classified as sudden unexplained deaths. The use of a panel of genetic markers for long QT syndrome, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and cardiac channel miopathies elucidated around 40 to 45% of the cases. In todays day and age the use of Molecular Autopsy has come with its share of ethical issues. The issues are raised because there are no set laws that a Medical Examiner must follow. For instance it is not required for an examiner to get permission from a relative to go forth with a molecular autopsy. This has created many issues for families because they may not always want to know the results of why a loved one ...
In light of declining autopsy rates around the world, post-mortem MR imaging is a promising alternative to conventional autopsy in the investigation of infant death. A major drawback of this non-invasive autopsy approach is the fact that histopathological and microbiological examination of the tissue is not possible. The objective of this prospective study is to compare the performance of minimally invasive, virtual autopsy, including CT-guided biopsy, with conventional autopsy procedures in a paediatric population.. Foetuses, newborns, infants and children that are referred for autopsy at three different institutions associated with the University of Zurich will be eligible for recruitment. All bodies will be examined with a commercial CT and a 3 Tesla MRI scanner, and investigators will be blinded to the results of conventional autopsy. After cross-sectional imaging, CT-guided tissue sampling will be performed by a multifunctional robotic system (Virtobot) allowing for automated post-mortem ...

However, the few autopsy studies that have investigated the association of visceral fat with atherosclerosis had small sample sizes and focused on coronary arteries of young or middle-aged White subjects. We aimed to investigate the association of pericardial fat (PF) and abdominal visceral fat (AVF) with atherosclerosis in the aorta, coronary, carotid, and cerebral arteries in a large autopsy study. MATERIALS AND METHODS:We evaluated deceased subjects aged 30 years or above. We dissected and weighted the PF and the AVF and evaluated the atherosclerotic burden in the aorta, as
Autopsy reports have traditionally been used as part of the trauma performance improvement (PI) process. They are typically a tool to help determine preventability of death in cases where the etiology is not clear. Deaths that occur immediately prior to arrival or in the ED are typically those in which most questions arise.. The American College of Surgeons Trauma Verification Program includes a question on what percentage of deaths at a trauma center undergo autopsy. Low numbers are usually discussed further, and strategies for improving them are considered. But are autopsies really that helpful?. A total of 434 trauma fatalities in one state over a one year period were reviewed by a multidisciplinary committee and preventability of death was determined. Changes in preventability and diagnosis were noted after autopsy results were available. The autopsy rate was 83% for prehospital deaths and 37% for in-hospital deaths. Only 69% were complete autopsies; the remainder were limited internal or ...
What happens at an autopsy?. Whitney Houstons autopsy took place the day after the singer was found dead in a hotel room, The Los Angeles Criminal Law Blog reports. Toxicology tests, which are part of the autopsy, may take weeks to complete.. An autopsy begins with the dissection of a dead body. Details are a bit gory: A pathologist makes incisions, then removes and inspects vital organs like the heart, lungs, brain, stomach, and intestines, according to the Oxford Companion to the Body. Tissue and fluid samples are taken from these organs, especially if they appear diseased or injured.. When is an autopsy performed?. State laws vary in their autopsy requirements, but in general, a forensic autopsy must be performed after a suspicious, violent, or unexpected death, Oxford says. Thats why the death of an otherwise healthy Whitney Houston, who was just 48, led to a forensic autopsy.. Compare that to a hospital or medical autopsy, which generally follows a patients ostensibly natural death in a ...
The Douglas County coroner has released autopsy reports in three of the four deaths caused by a North Lawrence wreck, and the countys top prosecutor says shes nearing a decision on possible charges stemming from the accident.. The autopsy reports for Yancy Longhat, 20, of Zuni, N.M.; Albert Whitebull, 25, of Kenel, S.D.; and Ray "Mike" Red Elk, 24, Anadarko, Okla., indicate all three had been drinking alcohol before the accident. According to the report, they were with friends "drinking alcoholic beverages in a rural field after bars had closed.". According to toxicology tests, Longhats blood-alcohol concentration was .08, which is the point of legal intoxication, according to Kansas laws. Whitebull and Red Elk had blood-alcohol concentrations of .22, according to coroner Erik Mitchells report.. The three men were killed when they were ejected from the bed of a pickup truck driven by Manuel Brown, 20, on Aug. 29 in North Lawrence. The truck hit Union Pacific railroad tracks near Seventh and ...
The cause of death has been released in connection with the September murder of a Goldsboro teenager. Kennedy McLaurin, 16, who was kidnapped and murdered in 2012, had been beaten, burned and shot twice in the chest before being buried in a temporary grave, according to an autopsy report released Tuesday by the state Chief Medical Examiners Office in Chapel Hill. The body of Kennedy Fitzgerald McLaurin, 16, was discovered in a shallow grave on a farm south of Goldsboro more than a week after he disappeared. Leonard Eugene Joyner, 21, Jerome Jilah Butts, 19, Kevin Edward Smith, 18, and Curtis Etheredge, 17, all face charges of murder in connection with his death. The autopsy report indicated that McLaurins body was first buried in a shallow grave and then re-buried. He had been hit over the head with a shovel, the report said. McLaurin, 16, of Rose Street, was first reported missing to Goldsboro police by his mother on Sunday, Sept. 9. He was reportedly abducted by several men on Bain Street in ...
Our results show that the responses given by mothers and birth attendants to nearly all questions on the perinatal verbal autopsy questionnaire are highly concordant (80% or greater agreement) when the interviews take place within seven days after the perinatal death. This suggests that interviewing birth attendants instead of mothers may be a suitable alternative for collecting data for verbal autopsy. Using birth attendants instead of mothers as perinatal verbal autopsy respondents has potential advantages from the public health, economic, logistical, emotional and ethical perspectives. Current perinatal verbal autopsy methods are such that interviewers sometimes have to travel long distances to collect information for verbal autopsy from bereaved mothers living outside their communities.13,15,19 The process can take months, is relatively expensive and involves extensive logistical planning.18,24 Additionally, in the early stages of planning, community leaders often have to attend sessions ...

Purpose: Autopsy has been considered the gold standard for diagnosing the cause of death. Discrepancies between pre and post-mortem diagnosis continue to be reported, ranging from 4.1 to 49.8% of cases referred for autopsy examination. Methods and Materials: Retrospective study. It was included all autopsies of heart transplanted patients performed between 2000-2010. Clinical data of patients, medical cause of death and cause of death at autopsy were analyzed. Then pre-mortem diagnosis was confronted with the cause ofdeath at necropsy according to the criteria of Goldman et al. (N Engl J Med 1983;308:1000.) Results: 48 autopsies were analyzed; 29 (60.4%) had a nondiscrepant diagnosis, 16 (33.3%) had a discrepant diagnosis and 3 (6.3%) had uncertain autopsy diagnosis. Among the discrepant diagnosis, 15 (31.3%) had possible impact on survival and 1 (2.1%) had no impact on survival. Among those pre-morten diagnoses associated with discrepancies, infection (31.3%) heads the list, followed by ...
In this study, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and meningitis were the most common specific causes of death among adults. The study identified the rise in deaths due to non-communicable diseases. The majority of deaths occurred among those aged 50 + years. Tuberculosis and cerebrovascular diseases were the leading specific causes of death for adults 50 and older. Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS were the leading specific causes of death for those 25-49 years old. Meningitis and tuberculosis were the leading specific causes of death for those 15-24 years old. In rural dwellers, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and meningitis were the main causes of death, whereas in urban areas, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, cerebrovascular diseases, and meningitis were the major specific causes of death among adults.. Communicable and non-communicable diseases, and external causes were the leading broad causes of deaths in the study area. The finding is consistent with the evidence from Dodowa HDSS that the major causes of death were ...

Background: Glomerular filtration rate and decline in renal function can be improved by global cardiovascular prevention. However, the prevalence of nephroangiosclerosis in patients with stroke is unknown.. Methods: Using an autopsy data bank, we studied the prevalence of nephroangiosclerosis in 820 consecutive autopsies of neurologic patients.. Results: Among the 820 autopsies, 354 had pathologic evidence of stroke and 466 had other neurologic diseases. Nephroangiosclerosis was found in 39.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 34.7-44.9) of patients with stroke vs 9.0% (95% CI, 6.4-11.6) in patients with other neurologic diseases. The odds ratio (OR) for nephroangiosclerosis, adjusted for age and sex, was 4.37 (95% CI, 2.92-6.52), and was 2.94 (95% CI, 1.83-4.74) after further adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors. Among the 354 stroke patients, the prevalence of nephroangiosclerosis was similar in patients with brain infarction and in those with brain hemorrhage, in patients with or without ...
PURPOSE: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) incidence has been reported to have increased three- to 15-fold in the past few decades. It is unclear whether this represents overdiagnosis or a true increase in incidence. Therefore, the current study aimed to estimate the prevalence of incidental DTC in published autopsy series and determine whether this prevalence has been increasing over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from inception to December 2015 for relevant studies. Two authors searched for all autopsy studies that had included patients with no known history of thyroid pathology and reported the prevalence of incidental DTC (iDTC). Two authors independently extracted the data, and discrepancies were resolved by another author. The pooled prevalence of iDTC was assessed using a fixed-effects meta-analysis model with robust error variance. The time effect was studied using an inverse-variance weighted logit-linear regression model with robust error
Chimpanzee autopsy study reinforces urgent need for U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to define and implement retirement criteria to get chimpanzees to sanctuary. Oct. 22, 2012 - Boston, Mass. - A Review of Autopsy Reports on Chimpanzees in or from U.S. Laboratories, in press for the October 2012 journal Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (ATLA), Volume 40, Issue 5, compiles data from 110 autopsies performed in the last 10 years on chimpanzees who died in or were from laboratories. The data show a full 64% of those chimpanzees suffered significant chronic illnesses and 69% had multi-organ diseases that should have rendered them too sick for research use. Yet, despite this knowledge on the part of the laboratories, many of these chimpanzees were held in labs for research despite their poor health and unsuitability for use.. The study raises concerns that labs circumvent their ethical and scientific responsibilities by not retiring chimpanzees who should be deemed no longer needed for ...
Results:. Of 285 patients, 47 underwent both virtual and medical autopsy. Of 196 clinical diagnoses made before death, 173 (88%) were identified by virtual autopsy and 183 (93%) by medical autopsy. Fourteen new major and 88 new minor diagnoses were detected by any autopsy method. The main diagnoses missed by virtual autopsy were cardiovascular events (9 of 72) and cancer (12 of 30). In contrast, medical autopsy missed 13 traumatic fractures and 2 pneumothoraces. Among 115 additional patients in whom only virtual autopsy was performed, 11 new major diagnoses were made. ...
BACKGROUND: It is difficult to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of biopsy for prostate cancer because men with negative biopsy do not undergo radical prostatectomy and thus have no confirmation of biopsy findings. METHODS: We performed 18-core needle biopsies on autopsy prostates from 164 men who had no history of prostate cancer. Six-core biopsies were taken from each of the mid peripheral zone (MPZ), the lateral peripheral zone (LPZ), and the central zone (CZ). We tested associations between age and tumor characteristics and analyzed the sensitivity of biopsies at each site. All statistical tests were two-sided. RESULTS: Prostate cancer was present in 47 (29%) prostates. Of the 47 cancers detected, 20 were clinically significant according to histologic criteria. Tumor volume was associated with tumor grade (P = .012) and with age (P|.001). The biopsies from the CZ did not detect any cancer that was not present in biopsies of either the MPZ or LPZ. The sensitivity of the biopsies taken from the MPZ and
TY - JOUR. T1 - The role of autopsy in death resulting from trauma. AU - Stothert, Joseph C.. AU - Gbaanador, Gbaranen B.M.. AU - Herndon, David N.. PY - 1990/8. Y1 - 1990/8. N2 - This study examined the difference between clinical impressions and autopsy findings in a group of patients dying on a university surgical service after blunt injury, penetrating injury, or thermal burns. Of 215 patients dying between the years 1984 and 1988, 212 were included in this study (autopsy rate, 98.6%). Major discrepancies in clinical diagnosis versus the anatomic diagnosis at autopsy were found to occur in approximately 30% of patients. The incidence of errors in diagnosis which may have impacted on survival in these groups of injured patients was quite low (5.1%). These data support the continued practice of obtaining autopsy in all patients dying from trauma. This information is clinically relevant, and, in todays atmosphere of quality assurance, absolutely necessary for a modern trauma center.. AB - This ...

Most of the time, most of the clinical diagnoses for which the patient is being treated are correct, even after autopsy. However, 5-10% of autopsies disclose findings that would have changed treatment and perhaps resulted in a better outcome, had they been known. Physicians, especially at this academic teaching hospital, can directly benefit for knowing these results and this improves their practice. Often at autopsy a clinical mystery is solved, such as "What was that shadow in the lung?" or "Why did he develop shock and die?" Autopsy findings usually bring a degree of peace and closure to the next of kin. The next of kin often learn: 1) the clinical diagnoses and treatment were correct; 2) the patients disease was far-advanced and nothing more could have been done. Occasionally, autopsy findings may suggest a disease or condition that is inherited or contagious; the living may then be screened or tested for such a disease. Sudden, unexpected death is another event that may be better dealt ...

After an initial autopsy report came back inconclusive, medical examiners have revealed the official cause of death for Juice WRLD.
A source with knowledge of Wilsons statements said the officer had told investigators that Brown had struggled for Wilsons pistol inside a police SUV and that Wilson had fired the gun twice, hitting Brown once in the hand. Later, Wilson fired additional shots that killed Brown and ignited a national controversy. The St. Louis medical examiner, Dr. Michael Graham, who is not part of the official investigation, reviewed the autopsy report for the newspaper. He said Tuesday that it "does support that there was a significant altercation at the car." Graham said the examination indicated a shot traveled from the tip of Browns right thumb toward his wrist. The official report notes an absence of stippling, powder burns around a wound that indicate a shot fired at relatively short range. But Graham said, "Sometimes when its really close, such as within an inch or so, there is no stipple, just smoke." The report on a supplemental microscopic exam of tissue from the thumb wound showed foreign matter ...

Newly released autopsy reports address further doubts about the tragic deaths of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven further months after their deadly helicopter crash in January. The records, procured by a leading entertainment portal, conclude that in a toxicology report detailed on page 13, Kobes pilot Ara Zobayan tested negative for drugs and alcohol - including marijuana, fentanyl, and opioids, amongst others.. In the nine different studies, the deaths of Kobe, Gianna, and Ara, along with Payton Chester and her mother Chester, as well as Alyssa Altobelli, her parents Keri and John, and coach Christina Mauser, are once again reported as an "accident." "The cause of death is blunt trauma sustained during a commercial helicopter crash. The manner of death is accident," reads Ara s report, detailing that "the blunt force traumatic injuries sustained are considered rapidly fatal.". The Sikorsky S-76B helicopter flew at a speed of 184 MPH when it crashed into a hill in ...

However, the court held that the error was "harmless" because "ample additional evidence established appellants guilt" and Dr. Miltons testimony "was mostly undisputed." Further, "although the autopsy report might have added credence to Dr. Miltons testimony that wounds caused by appellants rifle, standing alone, could have caused complainants death, that determination was not important to appellants liability as a party." Though IANAL, their conclusion seems a bit odd to me since Dr. Miltons conclusions, which the court said were allowable, were based on Dr. Florezs report. But Im never surprised when a Texas appellate court overlooks constitutional errors as "harmless" to uphold a conviction ...
