Here are handouts and recordings for the seventh Autogenic Training session. The initial Autogenic relaxation training page gives introductory details of this method. In the face-to-face trainings that I run, I would typically start the two hour class by practising last times Autogenic Training exercise together - in this case it would be the sixth sessions belly focus. I would then collect the trainees record sheets and go round the group looking at how each individuals practice had been going and trouble shooting/sharing experiences. This group discussion time can be very valuable. It brings up all kinds of interesting points, encourages people to interact and help each other, and reinforces the sense that we are all on this learning/exploring journey together.. At this seventh training session, I focus on two main themes. The first is to complete the full standard Autogenic Training sequence by adding in a focus on the forehead. The phrase I teach is Forehead cool and clear. I usually ...
Childhood migraine is a prevalent disorder seen in pediatric practice. Preliminary uncontrolled reports evaluating skin temperature biofeedback with autogenic training have suggested that it may be a useful intervention for childhood migraine. The present study used a controlled group outcome design to further evaluate the effectiveness of skin temperature feedback with autogenic training and home practice. Subjects were 28 children, ages 7 to 16, 14 males and 14 females. After receiving a physicians diagnosis of migraine a second diagnosis of migraine was made by the experimenter. Children were matched by baseline headache intensity, sex and age and then randomly assigned to either a waiting-list control or treatment group. Six dependent measures of headache activity were obtained from weekly headache records that the child and parents kept during baseline, treatment and follow-up. Assessment of ability to increase skin temperature without feedback was made at pre- and post-treatment sessions. The

The use of hypnosis in medical procedures was reported in areas of medicine such as oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry, dermatology, emergency medicine, gynecology, gastroenterology, and general medicine. The use of hypnosis in such a popular general medicine condition as chronic headaches was reported by ter Kuile et al. (1994). Researchers studied 136 patients to find out if autogenic training (AT) and cognitive self-hypnosis training (CSH) are valuable for chronic headaches. 40 of them received CSH treatment, 41 autogenic training and 53 a waiting list period. Headache intensity was measured using the headache index. There was a significant main effect of the pain intensity decreasing with the intervention (F(124, 2) = 5.8, p = 0.004), but there was no significant difference between the form of therapies. The authors suggest that autogenic training is more manageable for day-to-day medical practice as its implementation to the treatment plan requires no special competence ...
Autogenic Training (AT) is a method of producing deeply relaxed, peaceful states of mind and body. AT can accurately be viewed as both a form of relaxation and a form of meditation - the Four aspects of inner focus chart illustrates mechanisms of action. Autogenics is often taught as a method of stress management - a way of helping with a variety of disorders of overactivation that might manifest physically (e.g. headache, insomnia, gastrointestinal problems, etc) and/or psychologically (e.g. stress, anxiety, etc). There are links to a session-by-session description of an Autogenic Training course - complete with relevant handouts & downloadable recordings - at the bottom of this page. Interestingly AT may also, at times, help with treatment and relapse prevention for depression. Probably because forms of meditative relaxation produce experiences of positive emotion and subsequent improved functioning, Autogenics can also be used to promote happiness and wellbeing. The following background ...

Progressive relaxation: Since muscle tension accompanies anxiety, relaxing the muscles will reduce anxiety. Progressive relaxation focuses on the difference between the feeling of tension and relaxation. This technique involves alternatively tensing (10 seconds) and relaxing muscles (20 seconds) in different parts of the body. Start from your toes and work to the crown of your head. For example, to relax your hands make a tight fist in both of your hands until you cant tighten any more, concentrate on the tension you feel. Let go and let your hand relax. Focus on the sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach ...

think about heaviness and warmth in the limbs. These constitute the first two exercises of atogenic training. Four other instructions, relating to heart rate, breathing, warmth in the abdomen and coolness of the forehead, were added to form the six standard exercises. Later Sshultz and Thomas developed the personal and motivational formulae (at first known as intentional formulae), which are tailored to the individual experience, and involve repitition of therapeutic suggestions, designed, for example, to correct negative patterns of thought.. CLINICAL EVIDENCE Recent RCTs or systematic reviews suggest that autogenic training can alleviate headaches in a variety of clinical situations. A meta-analysis of all controlled trials reached positive conclusions for some conditions (hypertension, asthma, intestinal diseases, glaucoma and eczema) but made no assessment of the quality of the studies. One RCT (n=18) suggested that autogenic training may be a useful adjunctive therapy for complex regional ...

The practices of yoga; relaxation; meditation; mindfulness; biofeedback; hypnosis and autogenic training can calm the sympathetic nervous system. This has been recorded in altered skin resistance; brain wave; breathing pattern; muscle activity; heart and pulse rate; blood pressure and blood hormone levels. The effects are recognised to improve mood state. Studies have shown that relaxation can help with the management of pain, anxiety and insomnia. In the 1980s it was recognised that the ability to relax is not a learned phenomenon or skill but an innate and universal human capacity which the researcher Benson termed the relaxation response. If you feel you have lost this natural capacity and are seeking ways of learning how to truly relax once again yoga skills can help. ...
A randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of 4 group treatments for atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin disorder characterized by severe itching and eczema: dermatological educational program (DE), autogenic training as a form of relaxation therapy (AT), cognitive-behavioral treatment (BT), and the combined DE and BT treatments (DEBT). BT comprised relaxation, self-control of scratching, and stress management. Group treatments were also compared with standard medical care (SMC). Assessments at 1-year follow-up showed that the psychological treatments (AT, BT, and DEBT) led to significantly larger improvement in skin condition than intensive (DE) or standard (SMC) dermatological treatment, accompanied by significant reductions in topical steroids used. The results corroborate preliminary reports that psychological interventions are useful adjuncts to dermatological treatment in atopic dermatitis.

It can be classified by the modality of its content: visual, verbal, auditory, olfactory, tactile, gustatory, or kinesthetic. Common themes derive from nature imagery (e.g., forests and mountains), water imagery (e.g., brooks and oceans), travel imagery, etc. Imagery is used in the treatment of mental disorders and in helping patients cope with other diseases. Imagery often forms a part of HYPNOSIS, of AUTOGENIC TRAINING, of RELAXATION TECHNIQUES, and of BEHAVIOR THERAPY. (From Encyclopedia of Human Behavior, vol. 4, pp29-30, 1994 ...
There are different eastern approaches and different forms to achieve control over the mind-usually through Altered State of Consciousness. Yoga, hypnosis, meditation, autogenic training, Zen…are usually included in the category of altered states of consciousness. From a western perspective, what is really happening in the mind during meditation and what is the goal of meditation are that during an altered state of consciousness an individual could have certain positive or negative experiences. The objectives of these practices were based on spiritual pursuits; on the other hand, in the west its popularity is due to the expectation that they are good for relaxing, reducing stress, anxiety, neurosis and other problems of the fast-moving, competitive, stressful society (Ikemi et al., 1978). During the practice…there is generally a shift from ergo tropism to trophotropism. These terms denote the mechanisms and the functional status of the nervous system that favor the organisms ...
Karl Hans Welz is originally from Telfs/Tirol, a small town near Innsbruck, Austria (birth-house at www.zeisele.com). At a very early age he has developed a fascination for science in general and for the stars in particular. Consequently he has read eagerly any book on astronomy, astrophysics, mathematics and physics that he could get hold of. At age 16 he became interested in the subject of hypnosis. He began studying this discipline, later he perfected Autogenic Training and eventually, age 18, he began the practice of Hatha Yoga. This practice strengthened his then frail body within a few weeks and his overall condition and health improved considerably. Quite naturally these spectacular results gave Karl an incentive to explore other sciences that were not part of his academic curriculum. Studies and practice in astrology, practical magic, rune magic, and practice of various forms of life energy technology such as astral traveling and clair voyance followed within one year. Why do we like some doctors better than others?. Jeannie Tsai and Tamara Sims, both associated with Stanford, propose it is because of our emotional fit.. Tsai and Sims looked at two preferred emotional styles: Positive and high energy, and positive and low energy.. High arousal positive states would be like excitement and passion. Low arousal positive states would be calmness and relaxation.. Tsai and Sims had shown that people prefer positivity from their doctor. But it turns out some people prefer excitement and some calmness.. Personally, one of the qualities of some long-term meditators that turns me off is their almost forced calmness. They are so low-energy that they put me to sleep. I have meditated for forty years, mostly with Autogenic Training, but I like energy and zest. If I thought mindfulness produced a general soporific state like that, Id never do it!. Yet some people prefer that low energy style. (I wonder if some meditators act that way because they think it is the right way ...

Blood flow method shows physical state by SCOTT FAGERSTROM I want you to hold your hands out as still as possible, said Dave Worthen, a graduate student in psychology at Western. Shutting off the rooms light, he hurried out to a nearby computer room. In the dark room, a research student followed his instructions, holding her hands over a photocell. A small light appeared in front of her indicating that a small amount of blood was flowing through her fingers. Within a few minutes, a second light had appeared, as the blood flow in her hands increased. By watching the lights, the student was learning to control the amount of blood in her hands, a process many scientists would have declared impossible 15 years ago. Interest in this sort of research began in the late fifties, Worthen said, when psychologists learned people could be trained to relax by repeating a certain phrase. The technique, known as autogenic training, is still being used by a group in Westerns counseling center for ...

Deep and brief methods exist. Deep methods include autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and meditation (although meditation is sometimes distinguished from relaxation based on the state of thoughtless awareness that is said to occur during meditation). Brief methods include self-control relaxation, paced respiration, and deep breathing. Brief methods generally require less time and often represent an abbreviated form of a deep method. Other relaxation techniques include guided imagery, deep breathing, breathing control, passive muscle relaxation, and refocusing. Applied relaxation involves imagination of relaxing situations with the intention of inducing muscular and mental relaxation. Another popular technique is progressive relaxation, in which the individual is taught what it feels like to relax by comparing relaxation with muscle tension. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is said to require several months of practice at least three times per week in order to be able ...

The proposed study is designed to utilize a self-hypnosis DVD home-training program for parents to use with their children to teach self-hypnosis techniques for inducing relaxation and hypnotic analgesia. The study will examine the efficacy of this intervention for children undergoing urethral catheterization for VCUG procedures. Parents will be instructed to watch the DVD and practice the self-hypnosis exercises every day for a week with their child prior to the upcoming procedure. Parents are encouraged to practice self-hypnosis during their childs VCUG procedure. Both parents and ...

Stratigraphic architectures are fundamentally controlled by the interplay at different temporal and spatial scales of accommodation and sediment supply, modulated by autogenic responses of the sediment routing system and its constituent segments. The flux and caliber of sediment supply is a function of climate, catchment area, and tectonics in the source regions, and unraveling these forcing mechanisms from the observed stratigraphic architecture remains a key research challenge. The mid-to-late Eocene Escanilla sediment routing system had its source regions in the south-central Pyrenean orogen, northern Spain, and transported sediment from wedge-top basins along tectonic strike to marine depocenters. By constructing a volumetric budget of the sedimentary system, it has been demonstrated that there were marked changes in the grain-size distribution released from the sediment sources and also in the position of the gravel front, across three ∼ 2.6 Myr time intervals from 41.6 to 33.9 Ma. ...
Nikolay Nikolaevich Anichkov (Russian: Никола́й Никола́евич Ани́чков, often spelled Anitschkow in German literature) (1885, Saint Petersburg - 1964) was a prominent pathologist of Russian heritage. Anichkov first described the specialized myocardial cells (Anitschkow cell, cardiac histiocyte) and discovered the significance and role of cholesterol in atherosclerosis pathogenesis. In 1958, in an editorial in Annals of Internal Medicine, William Dock compared the significance of the classic work of Anichkov to that of the discovery of the tubercle bacillus by Robert Koch. American biochemist D. Steinberg wrote: If the full significance of his findings had been appreciated at the time, we might have saved more than 30 years in the long struggle to settle the cholesterol controversy and Anitschkow might have won a Nobel Prize. Anichkov elaborated on the doctrines of reticuloendothelial system and autogenic infections. His father, Nikolay M. Anichkov (1844-1916), was a ...

Because the thermister measures the temperature present at its surface, care must be exercised in its proper placement on the area of interest. For most biofeedback relaxation training applications, the ther-mister is placed on the surface of the hand, specifically the fingers. Although there is no research indicating a particular finger or place on the hand as a superior location for the thermister, most clinicians have a preference. The location of choice for this author is the volar tip of the little finger. The rationale that it is the smallest finger and therefore can gain and lose temperature faster than other fingers or areas of the hand. Because skin temperature is determined by blood flow and heat lost to the environment, the smaller the area, the quicker changes in blood flow will be reflected in temperature changes. The thermister has its own mass, so it too must be cooled and heated. Thermisters are available in various grades and sizes. The most desirable thermister is.... ...

Certain people should not use hypnosis or subliminal recordings: do not listen to these recordings if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, a seizure disorder, or are under the age of 18 (without the consent of your physician). ...
Affirmation is a statement of an idea you desire to make firm, to impress upon your subconscious mind, so that eventually it begins to work for you automatically. There are many different ways to practice self-hypnosis, and writing affirmations is one of them. As you keep on working with self-hypnosis, you may find that at different times your mood and preferences may change and different methods may be more suitable for you. The more options you are aware of, the better you will be able to deal successfully with any situation regardless of the circumstances. There may be times when you just want to relax and listen to a hypnosis recording and let it guide you toward your desired outcome. There may be times when you feel too busy and may find it more suitable to just let the subliminal recording play in the background.. And then, there may be times when you feel too restless, or you are experiencing some pressing feelings youd like to get out of your system and transform them, times when you ...
Self-Hypnosis is one technique that does not have any of the side-effects of the drugs, yet has the potential to eliminate Insomnia. The principle behind Self-Hypnosis is that words coming from the CD player / MP3 file hold a suggestive power that takes the listener to a trance-like state. When in trance, the brain automatically relaxes down to alpha and lower-than-alpha frequencies. The only thoughts that stream through the mind now are the ones created by the soft words coming from the player. There are no other thoughts around to distract. And when the suggestion is that you are shifting deep, deep, deep into sleep, this is what invariably happens. The beauty of the technique is that it holds absolutely no side-effects (to the best of my knowledge), and can, at best, make the person go deep in sleep, and, at worst, relieve the person of all stress and tension and worries of the day. ...
100 million Americans have chronic pain. Although the U.S. makes up 5% of the worlds population, it uses 80% of the worlds opiates. Lower back pain is the most common type of chronic pain and LBP is the most-common reason … Continue reading →. Share on Facebook. ...
After spinal-cord injury (SCI), reconstruction of neuronal tracts is quite difficult because an inhibitory scar is formed on the lesion site, where several axonal growth inhibitors, such as for example chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPG), accumulate. mice had been anesthetized with trichloroacetaldehyde monohydrate, and had been transcardially perfused with ice-cold saline and 4% paraformaldehyde (PFA). Vertebral columns had been isolated and held in 4% PFA at 4C. Spinal-cord tissues throughout the lesion had been separated and set additional with 4% PFA right away. The vertebral cords had been immersed in 10, 20, and 30% sucrose-phosphate buffered saline (PBS) successively at 4C and inserted in Tissue-Tek Optimal Reducing Temperature Substance BIX 02189 (Sakura Finetek Japan, Tokyo, Japan). The vertebral cords had been cut into 14-m successive sagittal areas utilizing a CM3050S cryostat (Leica, Heidelberg, Germany). The pieces had been post-fixed with 4% PFA for 60 min at space temp and ...
Lushunya Wallace has severe lower back and leg pain that she cant explain, and its been dogging her for about two years. The Northeast Side resident has undergone therapy. She has had steroid injections. And shes used medications. But nothing helped much.So Wallace decided to try a spinal-cord stimulator. The device, consisting of wires and a battery, controls pain by delivering electrical impulses to the spine or nerves to block pain signals, a form of neuromodulation.

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) present a major challenge to therapeutic development due to its complexity. Combinatorial approaches using biodegradable polymers that can simultaneously provide a tissue scaffold, a cell vehicle, and a reservoir for sustained drug delivery have shown very promising results. In our previous studies we have developed a novel hybrid system consisting of starch/poly-e-caprolactone (SPCL) semi-rigid tubular porous structure, based on a rapid prototyping technology, filled by a gellan gum hydrogel concentric core for the regeneration within spinal-cord injury sites. In the present work we intend to promote enhanced osteointegration on these systems by pre-mineralizing specifically the external…. ...
By Michele Jacobson, Certified Nutritional Consultant (CNC). The occurrence and severity of symptoms for those who battle Raynauds disease is something that can be approached and, hopefully, influenced by nutritional factors.. The recommendations that I offer are related to two of the mitigating factors that affect Raynauds. First, there is the vasospastic nature of the disease, in which the blood vessels of the extremities constrict. This causes diminished circulation which then leads to temperature and skin (color) changes. Second, there is the stress-related nature of the disease which can serve to trigger symptoms. There are a number of nutritional recommendations which could prove to be beneficial. Some are simple omissions of foods and beverages which can adversely affect the system. Some are vitamin related. As always, it is wise to make your physician aware of any supplements you are taking.. It is a given that smoking should be avoided due to its vaso-restrictive properties. ...

I saw a hypnotherapist to help me calm down back when I was experiencing some of my worst symptoms. The session was so calming I noticed a significant reduction in the twitching, but it didnt go away completely at that point. It gradually came back over the next few days. Thats when I started to use self-hypnosis, which was somewhat successful and definitely helped. I just used my own inner monologue to replay what the hypnotherapist did from memory. For whatever reason I was never able to go as deep on my own as I was with the hypnotherapist, but it was probably because I was a little nervous and didnt 100% trust myself. It helped though, so it was worth it. Plus it got me comfortable with the concept which I later adapted to meditation. Its been a game changer in my life. Alcohol and drugs I dont view as healthy alternatives. They might temporarily help, but Ive found the natural techniques are far longer lasting and far more fulfilling (not to mention health beneficial ...
Use any of the previous self-hypnosis or other exercises to relax and apply white light protection. Lie down or sit in an easy chair, and when you are relaxed turn your attention inward and center it on the area of the third eye. See it glow with a golden white radiance and feel it pulsate with energy. As you do this, your realization of the sounds, colors, and temperature in the room around you should gradually fade, and as they do so the subtle psychic stirring will become more noticeable ...
