N2 - Are simple strokes unique to the artist or designer who renders them? If so, can this idea be used to identify authorship or to classify artistic drawings? Also, could training methods be devised to develop particular styles? To answer these questions, we propose the Stroke Authorship Recognition (SAR) approach, a novel method that distinguishes the authorship of 2D digitized drawings. SAR converts a drawing into a histogram of stroke attributes that is discriminative of authorship. We provide extensive classification experiments on a large variety of data sets, which validate SARs ability to distinguish unique authorship of artists and designers. We also demonstrate the usefulness of SAR in several applications including ...

Authorship is a central element of scientific research carrying a variety of rewards and responsibilities, and while various guidelines exist, actual author contributions are often ambiguous. Inconsistent or limited contributions threaten to devalue authorship as intellectual currency and diminish authors responsibility for published content. Researchers have assessed author contributions in the medical literature and other research fields, but similar data for the field of ecological research are lacking. Authorship practices in ecological research are broadly representative of a variety of fields due to the cross-disciplinary nature of collaborations in ecological studies. To better understand author contributions to current research, we distributed a survey regarding co-author contributions to a random selection of 996 lead authors of manuscripts published in ecological journals in 2010. We obtained useable responses from 45% of surveyed authors. Reported lead author contributions in ...

A cross-disciplinary panel discussion on authorship in the digital age, with a focus on the specific goals and needs of academic authors. Authors who write to be read care about how their works are published and what that means for reader access. While traditional options and copyright arrangements still predominate in many fields, there are ever-increasing ways to share works of authorship. What works best to get textual and visual works out there and under what circumstances? Join us for this panel discussion with Authors Alliance, where we will explore the opportunities and challenges authors face in maximizing the reach of their work, both in and outside of academia. ...

This book traces a long-standing concern with issues of authorship throughout the work of Günter Grass, Germanys best-known contemporary writer and public intellectual. Through detailed close-readings of all of his major literary works from 1970 onwards and careful analysis of his political writings from 1965 to 2005, it argues that Grasss tendency to insert clearly recognizable self-images into his literary texts represents a coherent and calculated reaction to his constant exposure in the media-led public sphere. It underlines the degree of play which has characterized Grasss relationship to this sphere and his identity as part of it and explains how a concern with the very concept of authorship has conditioned the way his work as a whole has developed on both thematic and structural levels. The major achievement of this study is to develop a new interpretative paradigm for Grasss work. It explains for the first time how his playful tendency to manipulate his own authorial image conditions all

Figure 1 - Scholarly output (articles only) published in the period 2004-13 from a search for graphene in the titles, abstracts or keywords. Source: SciVal.. The present study aims to compare three methods of assigning authorship credit to the authors of the corpus of research articles on graphene defined above and examine the differences in the resulting lists of high-impact researchers. The first method is the standard full count method - each author on the article receives a full count for each article they appear on, and also the full citation credit. The second method is fractional, where each author gets an equal portion of the credit with all other co-authors; an author on a single-author paper gets 1, while one on a 4-author paper gets 0.25; citation credit is assigned in the same way. For an examination of the rise of fractional authorship over time, see Publish or perish? The rise of the fractional author… , also in this issue (6). Finally, the harmonic method (as developed ...
The research assessment exercise (RAE) forms the basis for determining the funding of higher education institutions in the UK. Monies are distributed according to a range of performance criteria, the most important of which is research outputs. Problems to do with publication misconduct, and in particular, issues of justice in attributing authorship, are endemic within the research community. It is here argued that the research assessment exercise currently makes no explicit attempt to address these concerns, and indeed, by focusing attention on research outputs, may actually be fostering such ethical problems.. ...
Opinions about the schemes success remain deeply divided (as one would expect with reputations and large amounts of money at stake), with valuable and considered debate on the ethics of introducing a mechanism that places fellow institutions in positions of rivalry and competition when what is perhaps needed is greater collaboration. There has also been useful discussion about: the relative merits of using outcome measures that are far from reliable; the possible impact of the scheme on promoting or stunting genuine scholarship; reducing gender discrimination, and facilitating a culture of meritocracy.25 It is surprising, however, that there has been no empirical research to date, exploring the impact of the scheme on issues of authorship; nor has there been any detailed critique of this relationship.26. It is of particular concern that although research outputs (publications in the present context) are the declared principal basis for assessment, the published RAE literature provides no ...
Authorship: Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to (a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; and to (b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and (c) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions (a), (b), and (c) must all be met. Participation solely in the acquisition of funding or the collection of data does not justify authorship. General supervision of the research group is also not sufficient for authorship. Any part of an article critical to its main conclusions must be the responsibility of at least one author. The authors should sign their names in the title page ...

The recent growth of empirical scholarship in law, which some have termed empirical legal studies, has received much attention. A less-noticed implication of this trend is its potential impact on the manner of scholarly production in legal academia. A common prediction is that academic collaboration rises with scholarly specialization. As the complexity of a field grows, more human capital and more diverse types of human capital are needed to make a contribution. This Article presents two tests of whether empiricism has spurred more coauthorship in law. First, the Article shows that the fraction of articles in the top fifteen law reviews that were empirical or coauthored (or both) trended upwards between 2000 and 2010. The increase in empirical articles accounted for a substantial share of the growth in coauthored articles, and the correlation between coauthorship and empiricism persisted after controlling for numerous other influences. Second, the Article examines the articles published since 1989 in

previous post , next post » Towards the end of January, there were three editorials in the New England Journal of Medicine with somewhat overlapping authors and somewhat conflicting messages. The first editorial was D.B. Taichman et al., Sharing clinical trial data - a proposal from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, published online 1/20/2016:. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) believes that there is an ethical obligation to responsibly share data generated by interventional clinical trials because participants have put themselves at risk. In a growing consensus, many funders around the world - foundations, government agencies, and industry - now mandate data sharing.. The second editorial was by Dan L. Longo and Jeffrey Drazen - Drazen is the editor-in-chief of the journal, and Longo is a deputy editor. Though phrased somewhat diplomatically, it expressed a strikingly negative evaluation of the whole idea (Data Sharing, NEJM ...

We then very carefully assessed these five papers on the merits described above, using the PRISMA reporting checklist to evaluate scientific rigour in study design and reporting.. The highest ranked paper was by Ms. Joanne Kemp (PhD Candidate), a physical therapist from Tasmania, Australia who recently submitted her PhD thesis at the University of Queensland under the supervision of coauthor Associate Professor Kay Crossley.. Kemp and colleagues review investigated the outcomes of pain and physical function following hip arthroscopy with and without femoral osteoplasty in individuals with intra-articular hip pathology. The study question was developed in light of recent advances in surgical techniques as well as a shift in perspective to acknowledge that hip pathologies often co-exist. They argue that surgical outcomes should therefore be evaluated in an inclusive way: by surgical technique or procedure rather than by isolated hip pathology.. Kemp and colleagues study contributes to the ...

The AFP Authors Guide says that we do not consider articles written by medical or other students, and that we ask that any resident wishing to write for us team up with an experienced physician who will serve as first and corresponding author. Because this policy occasionally raises questions, I would like to present the reasoning behind it.. Our first responsibility is to the readers. Our readers depend on us to provide them with current, accurate, authoritative, evidence-based information in a practical format that they can use to help improve patient care. Writing good clinical reviews is hard work. It is especially difficult when writing for AFP because of the added stipulations we ask for, such as using selected evidence-based resources, creating a table of key clinical recommendations that is rated based on our Strength of Evidence Taxonomy, writing a patient education handout, and responding to pages of peer reviewer comments.. Writing a clinical review includes more than just the ...
It is in the fantasy of dreams, and their residual leakage into everyday life, evidenced so often in David Lynchs Twin Peaks, where we can locate a similar authorial agency. The cult Nineties psycho-noir, and its discontinuous return twenty-six years later, provoke us into reconsidering the science of sleep as the art of fiction, assembling an alternative, interactive discourse from found material.. The turning in and turning into in dreams is often described as an encounter with the bizarre, a word which indicates our lack of understanding about the peculiar processes that normally happen inside our heads. Dreams are inherently and primarily bizarre, Allan J. Hobson argues, because during REM sleep, our noradrenergic and serotonergic systems do not modulate the activated brain, as they do in waking. The cerebral cortex and hippocampus cannot function in their usual oriented and linear logical way, Hobson writes, but instead create odd and remote associations (71). But is it, in fact, ...

Hadrosauromorpha is a cohort of iguanodontian ornithopods, defined in 2014 by David B. Norman to divide Hadrosauroidea into the basal taxa with compressed manual bones and a pollex, and the derived taxa that lack them. The clade is defined as all the taxa closer to Edmontosaurus regalis than Probactrosaurus gobiensis. This results in different taxon inclusion depending on the analysis. Hadrosauromorpha was first used in literature by David B. Norman in 2014 in a discussion of phylogenetics of Hypselospinus. In his 2014 paper Norman references another of his publications as the authority for Hadrosauromorpha, a chapter in the book Hadrosaurs. However, the book was in fact published later, in 2015. Following Article 19.4 of the PhyloCode, the authorship of the clade is thus Norman (2015), while the authorship of the definition is Norman (2014). Hadrosauromorpha was defined by Norman (2014 and 2015) as hadrosauroid taxa closer to Edmontosaurus regalis than Probactrosaurus gobiensis. This definition ...
In earlier centuries, Nature set the parameters, as Philip Round states, of conversations about everything from church doctrine to village order. Often discussions of gender, character, authorship, and even civil discourse turned to questions of customary precedent and natural law. By the twentieth century nature was used to delineate the new literary study of nature writing, while also used in broader terms to question the changing nature of our society with the onset of the digital age, postmodernism, new views of gender and race construction, and even changes within academia. What is the nature of the academia today? How has the nature of publishing and authorship changed with the digital age? How has the nature of our profession changed? In what ways does nature define us? Or do we define nature?. For our 2013 meeting, CEA invites papers and panels that explore the literary, the pedagogical, and the professional nature of our field.. Background International collaborative research is a mechanism for improving the development of disease-specific therapies and for improving health at the population level. However, limited data are available to assess the trends in research output related to orphan diseases. Methods and Findings We used bibliometric mapping and clustering methods to illustrate the level of fragmentation in myeloma research and the development of collaborative efforts. Publication data from Thomson Reuters Web of Science were retrieved for 2005-2009 and followed until 2013. We created a database of multiple myeloma publications, and we analysed impact and co-authorship density to identify scientific collaborations, developments, and international key players over time. The global annual publication volume for studies on multiple myeloma increased from 1,144 in 2005 to 1,628 in 2009, which represents a 43% increase. This increase is high compared to the 24% and 14% increases observed for lymphoma and leukaemia.

Case reports are considered official communications of the conference. The presenting author and co-authors must comply with the IDWeek embargo policy, which states that case reports must be based on results that have not been previously published and are not anticipated to be published before the meeting UNLESS the publication occurs AFTER the abstract withdrawal deadline on July 17. Case reports must not be submitted if previously presented at a national or international meeting such as IDSA, SHEA, ICAAC, ASM, CROI, or ECCMID. The IDWeek Program Committee will consider case reports that have been previously submitted at smaller/regional meetings, but have not been published in a journal and on the proviso that no rights have previously been transferred; however, all new or updated data must be included in the case report.. Authors and co-authors transfer any copyrights and agree to release the case report for future IDWeek publication on idimages.org and in all formats including translation, ...

Swamp Toad talks. First of all, We Did Not Elect Ted Cruz. We elected Donald Trump. Ted Cruz in this interview croaks about lowering healthcare costs the Freedom Caucus way but he doesnt say that it entails tossing everyone on obamacare to the streets. He croaks about how Donald Trump signed two bills he authored and that he is on the phone with Donald Trump constantly running the government over Donald Trump with the Freedom Caucus. There has been talk about Donald Trump not letting the press view his signing of certain legislation and I bet it was the Ted Cruz bills. Swamp Toad talks about how the Freedom Caucus way will lower health care costs that the current form of legislation Donald Trump supports wont. ...

Bruce Beutler, an immunologist at the University of Texas and winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was the most senior of several authors to publish the paper MAVS, cGAS, and endogenous retroviruses in T-independent B cell responses in the journal Science in 2014.. The research in the paper states that virus-like elements in the human genome play a crucial role in the immune systems response to pathogens.. After trying to replicate the papers results but obtaining contrary data, however, Beutler contacted Science to say that his latest experiments weakened his confidence in original results.. He and several co-authors of the paper requested a retraction of the original paper, but the process was drawn out when two of the co-authors stood by their original results.. Ming Zeng, the lead author, and Xiaolei Shi, a co-author, maintain that their original experiment is valid, and that the different finding was due to a problem with the design of the reproduction ...
November 19, 2020. Warning: this blog contains some hardcore plant science. Look away now if this is a bit much! This blog celebrates the publication in the Journal of Experimental Botany of a new paper about arsenate reductase in plants. Dr. Sina Fischer of the Future Food Beacon is the first author on the study and performed much of the work, assisted by a number of co-authors. including Dr Paulina Flis who leads Prof. Salts Ionomics Facility. It would be impossible for me to focus in on just one, there are so many things I enjoy about our program.. The first, of course, would have to be our students. I also happen to be our programs alumni liaison so I have the good fortunate of interacting with our graduates on a regular basis, even after they finish the program. Because we are a part-time degree program many of our students are currently working, volunteering, or interning in museums. They are able to incorporate what they learn in the digital classroom often immediately into their own practice and conversely share their experiences in class discussion Our students come from all different kinds of institutional genres from botanic gardens, to aquaria, to art museums, historical societies, natural history museums, science centers, etc. and from all different kinds of positions-registrars, curators, development officers, directors, collection managers, educators, etc. this makes for engaging classroom discussions and a broader ...

MIT researchers have discovered a new mathematical relationship - between material thickness, temperature, and electrical resistance - that appears to hold in all superconductors. They describe their findings in the latest issue of Physical Review B.. The result could shed light on the nature of superconductivity and could also lead to better-engineered superconducting circuits for applications like quantum computing and ultralow-power computing.. We were able to use this knowledge to make larger-area devices, which were not really possible to do previously, and the yield of the devices increased significantly, says Yachin Ivry, a postdoc in MITs Research Laboratory of Electronics, and the first author on the paper.. Ivry works in the Quantum Nanostructures and Nanofabrication Group, which is led by Karl Berggren, a professor of electrical engineering and one of Ivrys co-authors on the paper. Among other things, the group studies thin films of superconductors.. Superconductors are materials ...

Pseudomonas knackmussii B13 was the first strain to be isolated in 1974 that could degrade chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons. This discovery was the prologue for subsequent characterization of numerous bacterial metabolic pathways, for genetic and biochemical studies, and which spurred ideas for pollutant bioremediation. In this study we determined the complete genome sequence of B13 using next generation sequencing technologies and optical mapping. Genome annotation indicated that B13 has a variety of metabolic pathways for degrading monoaromatic hydrocarbons including chlorobenzoate, aminophenol, anthranilate, and hydroxyquinol, but not polyaromatic compounds. Comparative genome analysis revealed that B13 is closest to Pseudomonas denitrificans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The B13 genome contains at least 8 genomic islands (prophages and integrative conjugative elements - ICE), which were absent in closely related pseudomonads. We confirm that two ICE are identical copies of the 103-kb ...
