Authorship is a central element of scientific research carrying a variety of rewards and responsibilities, and while various guidelines exist, actual author contributions are often ambiguous. Inconsistent or limited contributions threaten to devalue authorship as intellectual currency and diminish authors responsibility for published content. Researchers have assessed author contributions in the medical literature and other research fields, but similar data for the field of ecological research are lacking. Authorship practices in ecological research are broadly representative of a variety of fields due to the cross-disciplinary nature of collaborations in ecological studies. To better understand author contributions to current research, we distributed a survey regarding co-author contributions to a random selection of 996 lead authors of manuscripts published in ecological journals in 2010. We obtained useable responses from 45% of surveyed authors. Reported lead author contributions in ...
SATVI carries out many clinical studies in collaboration with local and/or international partners. Given the complexities of the contributions that individuals make towards such studies, it is important to define how authorship status is allocated on arising publications. This document describes the criteria and expectations related to authorship, including the order or position of authors. Whenever possible, the policies in this document should be used to guide authorship, however, there is room for negotiation under specific circumstances.. Click to download. ...
A cross-disciplinary panel discussion on authorship in the digital age, with a focus on the specific goals and needs of academic authors. Authors who write to be read care about how their works are published and what that means for reader access. While traditional options and copyright arrangements still predominate in many fields, there are ever-increasing ways to share works of authorship. What works best to get textual and visual works out there and under what circumstances? Join us for this panel discussion with Authors Alliance, where we will explore the opportunities and challenges authors face in maximizing the reach of their work, both in and outside of academia. ...

This book traces a long-standing concern with issues of authorship throughout the work of Günter Grass, Germanys best-known contemporary writer and public intellectual. Through detailed close-readings of all of his major literary works from 1970 onwards and careful analysis of his political writings from 1965 to 2005, it argues that Grasss tendency to insert clearly recognizable self-images into his literary texts represents a coherent and calculated reaction to his constant exposure in the media-led public sphere. It underlines the degree of play which has characterized Grasss relationship to this sphere and his identity as part of it and explains how a concern with the very concept of authorship has conditioned the way his work as a whole has developed on both thematic and structural levels. The major achievement of this study is to develop a new interpretative paradigm for Grasss work. It explains for the first time how his playful tendency to manipulate his own authorial image conditions all
The research assessment exercise (RAE) forms the basis for determining the funding of higher education institutions in the UK. Monies are distributed according to a range of performance criteria, the most important of which is "research outputs". Problems to do with publication misconduct, and in particular, issues of justice in attributing authorship, are endemic within the research community. It is here argued that the research assessment exercise currently makes no explicit attempt to address these concerns, and indeed, by focusing attention on research outputs, may actually be fostering such ethical problems.. ...
Opinions about the schemes success remain deeply divided (as one would expect with reputations and large amounts of money at stake), with valuable and considered debate on the ethics of introducing a mechanism that places fellow institutions in positions of rivalry and competition when what is perhaps needed is greater collaboration. There has also been useful discussion about: the relative merits of using outcome measures that are far from reliable; the possible impact of the scheme on promoting or stunting genuine scholarship; reducing gender discrimination, and facilitating a culture of meritocracy.25 It is surprising, however, that there has been no empirical research to date, exploring the impact of the scheme on issues of authorship; nor has there been any detailed critique of this relationship.26. It is of particular concern that although research outputs (publications in the present context) are the declared principal basis for assessment, the published RAE literature provides no ...

After using Google Authorship on his site, Alex Yumas from JitBit was shocked to discover that their traffic fell by 90%. The site in question still held the first result on Google for the relevant search query, but having a little Google+ avatar picture next to the result text was stopping people from clicking.. Why did people start ignoring or avoiding the first result? I think this is a case of sending the wrong signal to the user. The little avatar by the search result suggests the result is tied to social media - i.e. some entry on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ - or perhaps a blog post, but not a product page. If people were searching for an article, a link of this nature might make sense, but those looking for a product page will mentally block it out.. As Alex writes, he even found himself looking past his own site in the results:. ...

Im not anti-test scores and Im not anti-accountability. I am anti-accountability at the price of the health of our students and our future.. Carole Lee studies the allocation of major resources among scholars - in particular, co-authorship relationships, publication outcomes, grant awards, and scientific prizes - and their distribution across the scholarly population by gender and race. To study these, she and her collaborators have been looking at co-authorship relationships across the JSTOR corpus (by gender), grant award outcomes at the National Institutes of Health (by race), grant award outcomes at other intramural agencies (by gender, degree type, and seniority), and the awarding of scientific prizes (by gender). Her collaborators include faculty in Statistics, Information Science, Sociology, and Biology, as well as organizations such as the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health, the Association for Women in Science, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences. The mission behind her work, as a philosopher of science, is to understand scientific practice with an eye towards improving it. ...
All co-authors of a publication are responsible for providing consent authorship to the Corresponding Author, should contribute in the research work, take responsibility for appropriate portions of the content, acknowledging that they have reviewed and approved the manuscript and are responsible for the content of all appropriate portions of the manuscript, including the integrity of any applicable research. Authors may acknowledge those people who helped in research project, such as office staff, editorial assistants, medical writers, or other individuals in their acknowledgement. Guest (symbolic), gift (an individual who has not contributed to the research work) and ghost authors are all inconsistent with the definition of authorship, and are unacceptable and a violation of this policy. Return to Erdös Number Project home page.. The first step in computing your Erdös number should be to search the Erdos1 file to see whether you or your coauthors are listed. If you are a coauthor of Paul Erdös, then presumably you know it. If you are a coauthor of a coauthor (i.e., you have Erdös number 2), then you will find your name listed in that file under the Erdös coauthor with whom you have written; do a search with your browser. If that doesnt work, then search for your coauthors in that file; if you find one, then your Erdös number is 3 and you have the path. If this fails, then read on:. If you would like help in determining your Erdös number, write us and well do our best to find a short path of coauthorships (no guarantees, but we have pretty good data and automated search methods). If you have published a paper reviewed in Mathematical Reviews, we should be able to find you (send us a complete name and cite a publication or two). If not, youll need to send the full names ...
Building on the research of Libet and others, this chapter shows that conscious will, and authorship more generally, is less a cause of events than an experience one has when the mind determines an event should be ascribed to the self-and that time plays a key role in such determinations. It then shows that this experience of authorship involves a subjective bending of time, such that actions and events are perceived to be temporally closer to each other when authorship is inferred.

Court documents reveal Monsanto was ghost-writing academic papers defending its products and attacking critics. The documents underscore the lengths to which the agrochemical company goes to protect its image. Documents show that Henry I. Miller, an academic and a vocal proponent of genetically modified crops, asked Monsanto to draft an article for him that largely mirrored one that appeared under his name on Forbess website in 2015. Mr. Miller could not be reached for comment. A similar issue appeared in academic research. An academic involved in writing research funded by Monsanto, John Acquavella, a former Monsanto employee, appeared to express discomfort with the process, writing in a 2015 email to a Monsanto executive, "I cant be part of deceptive authorship on a presentation or publication." He also said of the way the company was trying to present the authorship: "We call that ghost writing and it is unethical." Mr. Millers 2015 article on Forbess website was an attack on the findings ...

Citation is not just about information management, ensuring a reader can find a particular item at a future date. If that were the case our footnotes and references would consist solely of the numerical International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) attached to every book, or the Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) and Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) of the online world. Within the ecology of scholarship, citations also provide a verifiable way to track the contributions of our colleagues and competitors through authorship in the broadest sense. In this role, citation provides a record of achievement and, in the emerging world of linked data, a view of the interconnected intellectual landscape of scholarship. However, the traditional list of authors is not an exclusive inventory of all of those people who had a hand in the creation of research outputs. No academic field currently takes a radically inclusive approach to authorship that would include everyone who had any involvement whatsoever in a ...

Your participation in this study is very important. We do not anticipate that it will take very long to enter a case into the registry. However, we would require that you enter all your cases into the registry in order to avoid collecting a convenience sample of cases, which could impact the development of the score.. Participants that properly enter at least 25 cases into the registry will be considered for authorship. Each listed author is expected to 1) enter all their cases into the registry, 2) assist in the analysis of the data and development of the scoring system, 3) assist in drafting or revising manuscripts following the development of the scoring system, and 4) give final approval of the version to be published. If feasible, the authorship will include the statement "on behalf of the ToxIC investigators.". ...

Which is to say, Flaubert saw himself as encompassing all that there is. And not only that: he feels he is in danger of having his knowledge of life, the world, and the ages of history, compromised by contact with the world: this is the reason he needs to live in isolation to serve his art. & so in another letter, he characterizes himself as a man of wax; everything gets imprinted on him [he is speaking of himself i the third person], is encrusted on him, penetrates him. If I should visit you, I should think of nothing but you and yours, your house, your country, the appearance of the people I had met, etc. In a related vein, a few weeks later he casually writes, I must not give myself a week of holiday; that is why I do not go to Nohant [to visit Sand]. The published paper reminded me of how long in the making this thing was. It was submitted in the middle of June 2012, and was published December 2014. This is the second time this year Ive had a paper that took well over two years to make it to print. Unlike the first case, which was due mostly to delays on the editorial side, the journal and the authors both contributed to this delay. First, like the Southwestern Naturalist situation, the PLOS ONE editor initially handling the article went AWOL on us, and we had to find a new editor. Second, we authors were not always prompt making our revisions. Coordinating four authors can be tricky, and I can testify that we all worked on this thing. There are no gift authorships here ...

This study was the result of one authors PhD thesis, at Johns Hopkins University. That is a first rate school, and the other co-authors are first rate scientists from first rate institutions. The journal it is published in is Pediatrics, a first rate peer reviewed journal. There are a number of anecdotal reports in the literature of the effect of fevers on ASDs which they cite. This is a prospective study, not a series of retrospective anecdotes. None of the authors are selling "fever treatments", they are serious researchers, and have written many serious research papers with multiple different collaborators and on multiple different subjects, some relating to autism, some not, published in first rate journals. There is no comparison between this report in a first rate journal with the "mercury causes autism" or the "MMR causes autism" crap. I looked at the publication records of each of the co-authors, and none of them seem like wackos. They havent published anything wacko before (that I ...
We editors of medical journals worry that we sometimes publish studies where the declared authors have not participated in the design of the study, had no access to the raw data, and had little to do with the interpretation of the data. Instead the sponsors of the study-often pharmaceutical companies-have designed the study and analysed and interpreted the data. Readers and editors are thus being deceived. Editors are also concerned that the declared authors might not have ultimate control over whether their studies are published. That decision may rest with the funders of the research-perhaps a government department or a pharmaceutical company-which could mean that results unfavourable to the funders are suppressed. This distorts the scientific record and again deceives readers, allowing them to read only favourable results. Editors have taken steps to counter the problem by revising the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals of the International Committee of ...

Finally, how should investors structure their bond holdings in this rising interest rate environment?. First is to focus on lower duration bonds. Duration measures a bonds price sensitivity to changing interest rates. If a bond (or in our case a bond ETF) has a duration of 8, it means the bond will decline approximately 8% for every 1% increase in interest rates, or rise 8% for every 1% decrease in rates; the higher the duration the higher the price sensitivity to rising rates.. Given our view that rates are going to continue to slowly rise, we are positioning our balanced portfolio with lower duration bond ETFs so as to minimize the impact of rising rates. Later when interest rates are higher well look to reverse this call and shift into higher duration/yielding bond ETFs.. The other key strategy for bonds in a rising rate environment is to overweight corporate bonds versus government bonds.. With the Fed and BoC now hiking rates, government bond yields are moving up and prices lower. This of ...

Emerald Group Publishing Limited. Purpose - the purpose of this paper is to examine the leadership role of authors, institutions, and countries based on research co-authorship networks in the field of operations management (OM) and ranks European authors, institutions, and countries using network centrality measures. It also identifies the primary research areas of each of the leading European authors and maps the areas that European research in general has focussed most on. Design/methodology/approach - Based on co-authorships in publications appearing in a representative set of three leading OM journals over the 15-year period of 1998-2012, network measures of total degree centrality and betweenness centrality are used to identify influential European agents serving as leaders and bridge builders in OM research. Abstract submissions will be peer-reviewed by the BHIVA/BASHH-appointed Abstract Review Committee and will be allocated to be presented orally, or as a poster. To minimise subjectivity in the scoring process, abstracts will be reviewed anonymously and any reviewer with a conflict of interest that could affect objectivity of scoring (e.g. co-authorship, financial interest, or scientific/personal conflict with the authors) will be excluded from scoring or discussing the abstract in question. In the final rankings, mean score and standard deviation will be calculated. Abstract acceptance is based on abstract quality, the potential significance of the observations, and the rigour with which the scientific methods were applied. Furthermore, the Review Committee considers thematic balance in determining which abstracts will be presented orally.. All successful corresponding authors will be contacted during the week commencing 12 February 2018 to confirm which format their abstract is to take. Oral ...

If rigidity is present and it is difficult to give breaths, prioritize naloxone and then continue respirations. Credit: University at Buffalo. For decades, clinicians treating multiple sclerosis (MS) have interpreted the appearance of new or expanding brain lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans as a sign that a patients disease is getting worse. Now, University at Buffalo researchers are finding that it may be the atrophy or disappearance of these lesions into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that is a better indicator of who will develop disability.. The five-year study, conducted by MS researchers in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB, was published in the Journal of Neuroimaging. Similar findings also resulted from their 10-year study of 176 patients that they presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in Los Angeles in April.. Robert Zivadinov, MD, PhD, first author on the 10-year study and senior author on the five-year study, said: "Using the appearance of new brain lesions and the enlargement of existing ones as the indicator of disease ...

911blogger.com. Since the days of Sir Isaac Newton, Science has proceeded through the publication of peer-reviewed papers. Peer-review means a thorough reading, commentary and even challenge before publication by "peers", that is, other PhDs and professors. This paper was thoroughly peer-reviewed with several pages of tough comments that required of our team MONTHS of additional experiments and studies. It was the toughest peer-review Ive ever had, including THREE papers for which I was first author in NATURE. (Please note that Prof. Harrit is first author on this paper.) We sought an established journal that would allow us a LONG paper (this paper is 25 pages long) with MANY COLOR IMAGES AND GRAPHS. Such a scientific journal is not easy to find. Page charges are common for scientific journals these days, and are typically paid by the University of the first or second author (as is the case with this paper) or by an external grant.. A peer-reviewed journal is also called a "refereed" journal. ...

Your participation in this study is very important to advancing our understanding of this novel treatment. Centers that contribute at least two completed data forms will have the opportunity to add one author per every two patients. Any center that completes one data form will be listed in the acknowledgements. Thus, if a center submits 4-5 complete data forms, they can pick two authors. If they submit 2-3 complete data forms, they will have one author. If they submit one, they will be listed in the acknowledgement section. If feasible, the authorship will include the statement "on behalf of the ToxIC investigators". Each listed author is expected to: 1) make a substantial contribution to conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) assist in drafting the paper or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and 3) give final approval of the version to be published ...

NEAVS/Project R&R made a factual and sharp response to an editorial in Nature Medicine (Volume 14, Number 8) - "When less is not more" - that advocated widespread experimentation using nonhuman primates (NHPs).. Our response, entitled, "Nonhuman primates mean less, not more, human medical progress" is authored by Jarrod Bailey, Ph.D., Project R&Rs Science Director and NEAVS president Theodora Capaldo, Ed.D. with co-authors from the HSUS and BUAV. The piece provides scientific rebuttal of points made in favor of NHP research in the Nature editorial. In particular, it highlights evidence of the failure of chimpanzee use, citing data from Project R&Rs investigations; addressing humane and ethical issues as well as promoting the use of scientifically superior alternatives.. ...

Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) infection affects almost 3% of the global population and can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma in a significant number of those infected. Until recently, the only treatments available were pegylated interferon and ribavirin, which traditionally were not very effective and have considerable side effects. For this reason, interest in complementary and alternative medications (CAM) in the management of hepatitis C has been investigated. Some CAM ...

The Neogene is taken to include the Miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene, and a well established sequence of marine stages now exists from the early Miocene Aquitanian to the Calabrian in the early Pleistocene. Up-to-date reviews are provided for the classification of continental Pleistocene deposits, oxygen and carbon isotope stratigraphy, organic geochemical stratigraphy and the letter classification of the East Indies Neogene. Major boundaries of the Miocene have been narrowed down to durations of about 1 Ma or less and to progressively shorter durations for the Pleistocene to Holocene boundaries. Future work will have to identify and date these boundaries in stratotype sections. Authors contributions are identified by initials at the end of each section.. ...
The primary aim of the study was to investigate how some rarely used variables were related to four different operationalisations of patient satisfaction. The variables were acknowledgement of illness (PEH) and needs (HoNOS). Four subscores from each of these were used in the analyses in addition to the total scores. By restricting the sample to first-time admitted patients, we controlled for ratings based on previous hospital experiences. A number of potential confounders were taken into consideration.. The variables of primary interest in the present study - acknowledgement of illness (PEH) and needs (HoNOS) appeared as predictors behind the number of positive and neutral scores, respectively. The worry dimension of the PEH (worrying about present conditions such as illness, losing friends, and being unable to work) was important in identifying the majority of patients with the highest numbers of positive scores: patients older than 27.5 yrs with high worry score at admission and who, due to ...

So my old PI was submitting a manuscript for publication last summer to a good journal (IF ~6.5ish). The paper looks pretty decent and my name is buried somewhere in the middle of the authorship orgy, but shit Ill take any publication to pad my list. I have not heard anything since he showed me the manuscript before submitting it last summer. In that time old PI has been booted out of old department and taken up root in another department in the same campus, and left that department. Last I checked he is not even employed by my old university, which is sad he was a nice guy. But then again nice guys dont always make great scientists. So in the mean time I check Pubmed everyday like a teenage girl hanging around by the phone for some guy to contact her. Ive previously tried to contact the guy just to see how things are going in the lab and maybe get a sense of whats going on with the paper and gotten no response. The thought has crossed my mind to email him specifically about the manuscript ...
Older adults are less inclined to take risks, but this behavior may be linked to changes in brain anatomy rather than age, according to a new study, resulting from a collaboration between Yale and NYU. The finding adds to scientific understanding of decision making and may lead to strategies for modifying changes in risk behavior as people age.. The study was published on Dec. 13 by Nature Communications.. Research has demonstrated that older adults are less inclined to take certain types of risks, such as participating in a lottery. In a prior study, associate professor of comparative medicine and neuroscience Ifat Levy and colleagues documented a link between tolerance for taking risks and gray matter volume in an area in the back of the brain known as the posterior parietal cortex; the more gray matter young adults had, the more likely they were to take risks.. In the new study, Levy and her co-authors, including first author Michael Grubb, a former NYU postdoc and currently at Trinity ...

April 15, 2009 at 7:58 am , sam , science community, wild web Ive been waiting for a LinkedIn for scientists. Ive finally found one: Epernicus. Its professional, clean, easy, and standardized. Most importantly, Epernicus recognizes that the scientific community already has a concrete network, which is defined by professor-student, coauthor, and colleague relationships. The site has a "geneology" feature and automatically connects you to your coauthors.. Epernicus profiles are focused on scientific network, research skills and background, and papers. This is what the LinkedIn for scientist should look like. (Its not perfect: I dont think theres enough emphasis on finding and sharing articles. See my idea below.). Of course, there are many versions of online networks for scientist. Here is a sampling of the ones Ive found: Labmeeting, Nature Network, Research Gate, Sciorbis, Mendeley, Scientific Commons, Scilink, CiteULike, ACS Member Network, 2Collab, Graduate Junction, and the list goes ...
Brett Smith for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online. Over the past 20 years, a Japanese man may have written some of the greatest works of fiction. The only problem is that his efforts were published in highly esteemed scientific research journals.. "It is as if someone sat at a desk and wrote a novel about a research idea," an investigative committee reported after reviewing the work of Yoshitaka Fuji, a Japanese anesthesiologist, according to Dennis Normile wrote for Science Insider.. The results of the review panel, which were posted to the official website for the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists, mean that Fuji could set the world record for most retractions by a single author at 172. An investigation of 212 of Fujii´s 249 published papers found that he had made up patients, falsified evidence, and tacked on co-authors who had no idea they were affiliated with his research.. The investigation was the conclusion of a public inquiry that began with a March 8 analysis in the journal ...

July 21, 1992 Dear Colleagues, I will assume responsibility for editing Molecular Biology and Evolution starting with Volume 11 (1994). Because of the usual gap between acceptance and publication my responsibilities will actually start about a year from now. You are the community that is served by MBE, and it would therefore be very helpful to me to learn how you feel about the journal. Do you currently read MBE? What are we doing well that you dont want to see changed? What are we not doing well? What should we change, and how? Do you publish in MBE? If not, what sorts of changes would encourage you to do so? If so, what can we do to facilitate your authorship? Are there areas of Molecular Evolution that we over emphasize? Are there areas that are under-represented? Please consider this an open invitation, both now and in the future, to suggest improvements. Those suggestions will be welcome by phone (716)J275P0721, by FAX (716) 275-2070, by E-mail (Bitnet: DRBH at UORDBV, or Internet:DRBH at ...

The portion of the ensuing Tale relating to the Grocer of Wood-street, and his manner of victualling his house, and shutting up himself and his family within it during the worst part of the Plague of 1665, is founded on a narrative, which I have followed pretty closely in most of its details, contained in a very rare little volume, entitled, Preparations against the Plague, both of Soul and Body, the authorship of which I have no hesitation in assigning to Defoe. Indeed, I venture to pronounce it his masterpiece. It is strange that this matchless performance should have hitherto escaped attention, and that it should not have been reprinted with some one of the countless impressions of the History of the Plague of London, to which it forms an almost necessary accompaniment. The omission, I trust, will be repaired by Mr. Hazlitt the younger, Defoes last and best editor, in his valuable edition of the works of that great novelist and political writer, now in the course of publication. It may be
Last year, Banerjee and coauthors published a paper in Science that showed the striking impacts of poverty graduation programs in 6 countries after three years. This week, we get a new paper from Bandiera and coauthors that revisits one of the models of this type of program they wrote about in 2013 and looks not only at a wide range of benefits, but also at what happens in the longer run.
Although not a geneticist, the late Austin Doyle placed tremendous value on pedigrees in hypertension research. He cherished his own scientific inheritance from Horace Smirk and took great pride in launching the next generation who, through their own fine achievements, would maintain the tradition. Intellect and a keen sense of competition were important prerequisites, and a promising young cardiovascular research fellow (and athlete at the national competitive level) from Sydney, Australia, attracted Austins attention. As a result, Colin Johnston was appointed first assistant in the Department of Medicine at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne, in 1968. In December 1999, Colin retired as professor and head of the same department.. In the intervening years, Colin proved himself to be an outstanding clinical scientist, respected internationally for his leadership and achievements. His credentials include authorship of over 450 papers in leading international journals, supervision of 70 doctoral ...
