Ant-gardens (AGs) are ant/plant mutualisms in which ants farm epiphytes in return for nest space and food rewards. They occur in the Neotropics and Australasia, but not in Africa, and their evolutionary assembly remains unclear. We here use phylogenetic frameworks for important AG lineages in Australasia, namely the ant genus Philidris and domatium-bearing ferns (Lecanopteris) and flowering plants in the Apocynaceae (Hoya and Dischidia) and Rubiaceae (Myrmecodia, Hydnophytum, Anthorrhiza, Myrmephytum and Squamellaria). Our analyses revealed that in these clades, diaspore dispersal by ants evolved at least 13 times, five times in the Late Miocene and Pliocene in Australasia and seven times during the Pliocene in Southeast Asia, after Philidris ants had arrived there, with subsequent dispersal between these two areas. A uniquely specialized AG system evolved in Fiji at the onset of the Quaternary. The farming in the same AG of epiphytes that do not offer nest spaces suggests that a broadening of ...

In the 21st Century, thankfully, most male babies leave Australasian hospitals with their genitals intact (uncircumcised). They are, however, still not assured of reaching adulthood (the age of consent) without being subjected to genital cutting practices. The most common reason cited for the circumcision of post-infant boys is a diagnosis of phimosis. The predominant (traditional)…

The Indian centric view of Migration is holding up over the colonial occupational west centric view. That Migration went from Africa to India. It was TERRYT who mocked me for saying that their was migration from India to Australia. Just like many many scholars who say Arya migration took place from India to central asia to europe. This book describes the encounter between the common law legal system and the tribal peoples of North America and Australasia. It is a history of the role of anglophone law in managing relations between the British settlers and indigenous peoples. That history runs from the plantation of Ireland and settlement of the New World to the end of the 20th century. The book begins by looking at the nature of British imperialism and the position of non-Christian peoples at large in the 17th and 18th centuries. It then focuses on North America and Australasia from their early national periods in the 19th century to the modern era. The historical basis of relations is described through the key, enduring, but constantly shifting questions of sovereignty, status and, more latterly, self-determination. Throughout the history of engagement with common law legalism, questions surrounding the settler-states recognition - or otherwise - of the integrity of the tribe have recurred. These issues were addressed in many

EcoCloud will have three main components: user management, data storage and managed compute platforms. Users management is an essential part of a system with users need to register and login using Australian Access Federation (AAF) or Google account. User information will be stored in LDAP to create user accounts to access virtual desktop platform and file sync applications.. In the first phase, as a data platform, EcoCloud will offer EcoDrive and EcoStore. The EcoDrive will act as a user defined storage platform with sync functionality to bring their own data and access them from EcoCloud compute resource and analysis platform. A user should be able to write to an EcoDrive and able to access data from different EcoCloud analysis platforms. Users should be able to sync EcoDrive to their local desktop but size of an individual datasets that will be synced will be restricted to less than 500 MB to minimise large data copying. The EcoStore is a managed data store to host large-scale reference data. ...

In addition, Im generally skeptical when it comes to "basal grades" and roots inferred by very distinct outgroups. Except for the three species forming the root-parasitic grade (one in South America, two in Australasia), all loranths are aerial parasites. Loranths are a ubiquitous, highly competitive tropical-subtropical group extending into temperate climates with proper summers and little snow. They have a very extensive and relatively old pollen record across all pieces of Gondwana and Laurasia (Grímsson, Kapli et al. 2017, and references therein). The main lineages are sorted continent-wise, and the shift from root to aerial parasitism is supposed to have happened several times within the Santalales and its families. But only once in loranths? And how could only one root-parasitic lineage survive in South America, and two more in Australasia; all with but a single species ...

John Chapman introduced Robert Letcher of Environment Canada, who gave the inaugural Tony Roach Memorial Keynote Address in memory of our good friend and colleague who tragically passed away recently. Letcher presented his recent research and thoughts on "Emerging Contaminants and the Influence of Biotransformation and Degradation on Bioaccumulation, Fate and Effects in Model Wildlife and Fish".. Thereafter followed a smorgasbord of great presentations on the impact of extreme weather events, metals, passive sampling, environmental impacts of coal seam gas and statistics and computational techniques. The tea breaks and lunches, in a marquee outside on the grass, were highly commended by the delegates, who thoroughly enjoyed both the food and being out in the Queensland sun. The poster presentation, which wrapped up the day, was a great success with fantastic views of the sunset on the heritage-listed University of Queensland library building.. The evening provided no rest for the wicked however, ...
The magazine explores how human-driven climate change might influence the way we prevent, manage and clean up contamination. For a start, growing concern with climate change is driving the need for sustainable technologies with lower energy requirements. Issue 16 takes a look at one promising technology - zero valent nano-scale iron, generated from waste iron oxide, which can remediate of a broad range of recalcitrant metal working fluids. We also investigate the importance of strategies for preventing and remediating groundwater contamination that take into account the predicted impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise.. Other articles include a wrap-up of the background and current status of a low-energy, in situ method for treating contaminated groundwater using titanium dioxide and fibre-optic cables, and a look into the dirty world of illegal, clandestine drug laboratories - clanlabs - and what must be done to minimise the dangers they pose to nearby residents.. - Read ...
ICPs respond to patients experiencing an acute, life threatening emergency. They provide rapid and specialist clinical assessment by implementing a targeted management plan for patients with significant alteration or challenge to normal homeostatic function. Whilst this role is tasked with providing clinical oversight during the management of these cases all patient care is undertaken in collaborative context with other paramedic staff or health care professionals in attendance.. The ICP is required to make rapid, often complex and critical clinical judgements without direct supervision. Individuals are responsible for their own continuing professional development which may be supplemented by employer-provided training.. An ICP is usually engaged by a statutory ambulance service, private paramedic service or defence force and may operate in a variety of community, industrial, resource sector, defence or event/public gathering settings including disaster response.. This professional may be ...

The primary aim of the study is to determine whether providing EGDT, compared to standard care, reduces 90-day mortality in patients presenting to the ED of hospitals in Australasia with severe sepsis.. Each patient meeting all of the exclusion criteria and none of the exclusion criteria will be randomised in the ED to receive either EGDT for a total of 6 hours post-randomisation, or standard care.. Patients assigned to receive EGDT will be cared for by the dedicated ARISE study team. The patient will receive treatment as per the study protocol for 6 hours with central blood oxygen levels as the target end-point, then receive standard care.. Patients assigned to receive standard care will continue to be cared for by the hospital team in accordance with current best practice.. Patients in both groups will also receive any additional treatment needed, such as antibiotics or surgery.. This study will involve 1600 patients with severe sepsis admitted to the ED from multiple hospitals.. ...

PD-L1 immunohistochemistry (IHC) on tumor tissue is an important predictive biomarker for anti-PD-1/anti-PD-L1 cancer immunotherapy. PD-L1 IHC is a companion diagnostic for the utilization of anti-PD-1 directed therapies in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and bladder cancer, and can predict response to immune checkpoint blockade. However, tissue biopsy is not always available or may be insufficient to accurately test for PD-L1 expression and biopsy samples may not reflect the actual PD-L1 expression of the tumor due to tumor heterogeneity. Given this heterogeneity and the risks inherent with tissue biopsy, the ability to detect tumor PD-L1 status with a simple blood draw would be a major advance in this field. In addition to minimizing patient risk from a tissue biopsy, a circulating biomarker assay can avoid biopsy selection bias and provide a snapshot of the dynamic tumor landscape ...
Acute severe childhood asthma is an infrequent, but potentially life-threatening emergency presentation. There is a wide range of different approaches to this condition, with very little supporting evidence. To improve knowledge in this area, there must first be consensus on how to conduct clinical trials, so that valid comparisons can be made between future studies.. We have formed an international working group comprising paediatricians and emergency physicians from North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, Central America, Australasia and the United Kingdom.. We aim to develop a truly international consensus on the conduct and reporting of randomized controlled trials for children with acute severe exacerbations of asthma. This will involve the development of a shared understanding of what needs to be measured, and how it should be measured, leading to a core outcome set for research involving this group of children.. Planned projects include a systematic review of ...
Little stints are very rare vagrants to New Zealand, with three accepted records, all from Lake Ellesmere. Each bird was associated with a flock of red-necked stints, which enabled comparisons with that species to be made. This was essential for the records to be accepted, as the two species are very similar, and are regarded as one of the most difficult small sandpiper species pairs to separate.. Identification. The little stint is a tiny wader, and is very similar to the red-necked stint. The following pointers may assist identification (see references for authorities on shorebird identification). Little stints are fractionally smaller and slimmer than red-necked stints, with a slightly longer and finer bill. They are most easily separated in breeding plumage later in the southern summer. Little stints retain rufous in non-breeding plumage, which red-necked stint does not (at least in Australasia), and in comparison with red-necked are noticeably brighter in tone (but note that juvenile ...

Medical laboratories in Australia are required to be accredited by either the Commonwealth government or by one of the state governments. Arrangements vary from state to state but almost all rely on an on-site assessment conducted by the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA) in collaboration with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).. This paper describes the background to this system and outlines the complementary roles of the various organizations involved. Some information is also provided on criteria development, selection and training of assessors, and the assessment process as employed by NATA. The role of proficiency testing programs operated by bodies such as RCPA, Wellcome Laboratories, and the College of American Pathologists is also mentioned.. The system has been operational since 1983, and over 100 separate laboratories representing approximately 300 laboratory units have been accredited. This paper comments on the outcome of those ...
