Tanzania is estimated to have over 80,000 traditional healers with varying specialities. The majority of healers are herbalists using mainly plants and a few animal and mineral products in their practices. Traditional healers are likely to be first consulted health provider due to socio-cultural settings in rural Tanzania. The estimated traditional healer:population ratio is 1:400 compared to 1:30,000 doctor to population ratio. Over the 12,000 higher plant species growing in Tanzania, at least a quarter have medicinal values and some of them already have a big market potential worldwide and can be exploited for local drug production. Some examples include Cinchona ledgeriana, Artemisia afra, Rauvolfia caffra, Rauvolfia serpetina, Atropa belladonna, Catharanthus rosea, Pischiera fuchsiaefolia, Moringa oleifera, Vuacanga africana, Prunus Africana, Aloe vera, Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Waltheria indica, to just mention a few. Hylands Teething Tablets have been recalled due to inconsistent levels of belladonna in them. The FDA states that there have been reports of serious adverse effects due to these inconsistent levels, as belladonna can be highly toxic.. This is one of those recalls I almost hate to see. I used Hylands Teething Tablets with great success on two of my children - the youngest didnt react in any way to them. No comfort, no bad reactions either. They were such a blessing with my two oldest that it was hard to recognize that for my youngest they would not be the solution to teething pain.. Hylands Teething Tablets have been used safely for decades. Are the inconsistent levels really a problem, or is the FDA being really picky?. Personally, Id like to see consistent levels, especially with the reports of adverse effects. The amount of belladonna is incredibly small, and I find it hard to imagine that theres enough to cause harmful effects, but if there are some, we need to be aware of that ...
Traditional flying ointment contained some quite peculiar odds and ends, and honestly there was no real need for all of such. Among other, one would often find them containing Belladonna, Aconite or Aconite infusion, in some older records also Henbane and Hemlock. Others would contain the Angeles trumpet ( several species of Datura or Brugmanisa ). Mentioned plants contain alkaloids, such as scopolamine ( highly toxic, found in Henbane, as well as in Datura, along with Hyosocamine ) , atropine ( found mostly in Deadly Nightshade or Belladona and also Datura , along with traces of DMT ), coniine and N-methyconiine ( Hemlock ) and so on. In general , they act as anticholinergics , deliriants, hallucinogens and plainly poisons , with high rate of fatality. However, properly dosed many are used medicinally, and they all have very predictable biochemical mechanism. That by no means says I am advocating use of such , more so without substantial knowledge of applied or clinical biochemistry and human ...
Lady Gaga Fame is the first-ever black Eau de Parfum that sprays clear and becomes invisible once airborne. The black-to-clear fragrance is an innovation of patent-pending fluid technology, exclusively launched with Lady Gaga Fame. The innovations go beyond the black-to-clear fluid: The olfactory structure itself also is rare for the fragrance industry. Traditionally, perfumes have a pyramidal structure - a hierarchy of sorts with top, middle and base notes. This fragrance, on the other hand, has a unique structure called the push-pull technology, where the ingredients interact together to highlight different olfactive aspects of each note at the same time, without any hierarchy. The scent is built around three main accords: dark, sensual and light. The dark accord was inspired by belladonna, the deadly nightshade possessed by haunted beauties since the 18th century. From this darkness, the fragrance evolves to a fusion of dripping honey, saffron and apricot nectar. The rich floral layer of ...

Hi David, The intergeneric cross between Hippeastrum and Amaryllis has been attempted many times in the past 2 centuries without any apparent success. While these genera have the same basic Chromosome count 2N= 22, Ive read a couple of papers comparing the DNA of Hippeastrum species with Amaryllis belladonna where it is reported that there are significant differences in the total chromosome volume and nuclear DNA with A.?belladonna having significantly larger DNA content and possesses a karyotype different from that of Hippeastrum spp. The two genera are similar in general vegetative and floral morphology, but they have important differences in the internal anatomy of leaves, bulbs, and roots and also some significant karyological differences between the two genera. There is probably more hope in crossing Hippeastrums with Crinums for most Crinum species also have the chromosome count of 2N = 22. The tomato and the chile are the most common used ingredients in salsas. The tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, a member of the nightshade family, which includes Tomatillo, Eggplant, and Chayote. The nightshade family also includes many species that produce poisonous alkaloids including tobacco (produces nicotine), deadly nightshade (produces atropine), and mandrake (produces hyoscymine, used for motion sickness and as a preoperative anesthetic). It is thought that the tomato originated in South America (probably Peru). It was domesticated by the Incas was introduced to Mexico where it was given the indian name, xicotomatl, now known in Mexico as jitomate. Spanish explorers introduced the tomato to Europe, but most Europeans were relucant to eat the tomato -- Since the tomato is a member of the nightshade family, it was commonly thought to be poisonous. On the contrary, today the tomato is known as the primary source of Lycopene, an antioxidant carotenoid in the same family as beta ...
Medicinal Plants of the World. Ben-Erik Van Wyk and Michael Wink, Pretoria 2004, 174] „Tropane alkaloids are valuable pharmaceutical drugs derived from solanaceous plants such as Hyoscyamus niger (black henbane). The biosynthesis of these molecules, including the nature of the enigmatic rearrangement of (R)-littorine to (S)-hyoscyamine, is not completely understood. To test the hypothesis that a cytochrome P450 enzyme is involved in this rearrangement, we used virus-induced gene silencing to silence a cytochrome P450, CYP80F1, identified from H. niger roots by EST sequencing. Silencing CYP80F1 resulted in reduced hyoscyamine levels and the accumulation of littorine. Hyoscyamine was observed in CYP80F1-expressing tobacco hairy roots supplied with (R)-littorine. Expression in yeast confirmed that CYP80F1 catalyzes the oxidation of (R)-littorine with rearrangement to form hyoscyamine aldehyde, a putative precursor to hyoscyamine, and without rearrangement to form 3′-hydroxylittorine. Our data ...

St Johns Wort - Another yellow flowering plant, this inhabitant of hedges and woodland causes photosensitation. This means that patches of unpigmented (pink) skin react under exposure to sunlight, becoming very inflamed which in turn may lead to rubbing and self trauma. Though of much reduced toxicity when dried, St Johns Wort may still be dangerous when baled in hay.. Deadly Nightshade - This resident of hedges and woodland clearings is entirely poisonous, with signs of consumption that include pupil dilation and incapacity to stand. Fortunately death rarely occurs.. Potato - All of the parts of this plant that are found above ground are poisonous as well as tubers that have rotted, sprouted or turned green through sun exposure.. Above are some of the more likely poisonous plants that your horse might encounter. Other plants to be aware of if consumed in large quantities include: MORNING GLORY, AVOCADO LEAVES, BULB FLOWERS (e.g. Tulips/Daffodils), WILTED RED MAPLE LEAVES. And a few other ...
Most of us cannot imagine our diet without tomatoes in it but this has not always been the case.. The early European settlers were actually frightened of the conspicuously red fruit, having heard that it belongs to the notorious family of Deadly Nightshade plants.. With their beautiful color and a pretty round shape, people had creatively used tomatoes for decoration for almost 200 years before they attempted to taste them.. We all know that tomato fruit is not only delicious but it is also very healthy for us.. This cannot be said about its other parts, namely the roots, the stem and the leaves. All these contain an alkaloid substance tomatine that is slightly poisonous to people. It does not have a lethal ability unless one ingests it in huge amounts. ...
One way plants protect themselves from being eaten by animals is generating toxic chemicals in leaves, blooms or fruits. Some plants are so well known for this characteristic that their names contain a warning; deadly nightshade is an example. More often, however, a plant name gives no clues. Parents of young ...
Aconitum napellus (Aconitum possibly from the greek for cone, napellus turnip) is known as the queen of the poisons, with the toxins aconite and aconitine present throughout the plant - the effects of which, which, in an interesting twist of poison counteracting poison, can be treated with atropine from Deadly Nightshade. Monkshood was often used as poison on arrows in Ancient Rome and China, and it is a close relative of the equally poisonous Aconitum Lycotonum, or Wolfsbane (so named for its ability to kill wolves). Death occurs within several hours of poisoning, with vomiting and nausea being early symptoms before death usually occurs by arrythmias. Despite their highly toxic nature, monkshood is popular as a garden plant, and if I have learned nothing else from this post its that the sanity of horticulturalist should probably be questioned ...
The Molecular Structure of Lead. Nature is amazing. She can cure us or kill depending on the dose rendered. For example, the deadly nightshade Belledonna can cure a high, hot fever in a child who has suffered a quick onset with red cheeks and red right ear if used homeopathically in a dynamically attenuated dose, however, if taken crudely, the grave will be your demise before morning. Healthy human discernment (ego) is the vehicle for determining exactly what is warranted in each situation.. While lead poisoning has symptoms from nausea to coma, its therapeutic value is used in Heilkunst medicine for the treatment of alcoholism. Just so you can see what I mean, Ill show you a couple of excerpts on Plumbum from James Tyler Kents Materia Medica:. The activities of the body, the functions of the organs, are slowed down in pace. The nerves do not convey their messages with the usual activity. The muscles are slow in action, sluggish. There is first paresis and finally paralysis, of parts first and ...

Atropine, a naturally occurring belladonna alkaloid, is a racemic mixture of equal parts of d- and l-hyoscyamine, whose activity is due almost entirely to the levo isomer of the drug. Atropine is commonly classified as an anticholinergic or antiparasympathetic (parasympatholytic) drug. More precisely, however, it is termed an antimuscarinic agent since it antagonizes the muscarine-like actions of acetylcholine and other choline esters. Adequate doses of atropine abolish various types of reflex vagal cardiac slowing or asystole. The drug also prevents or abolishes bradycardia or asystole produced by injection of choline esters, anticholinesterase agents or other parasympathomimetic drugs, and cardiac arrest produced by stimulation of the vagus. Atropine may also lessen the degree of partial heart block when vagal activity is an etiologic factor. Atropine in clinical doses counteracts the peripheral dilatation and abrupt decrease in blood pressure produced by choline esters. However, when given by ...
Pulsatilla, Belladonna, sulphur and Mercurius solubilis, in homoeopathic potencies, are the best remedies indicated for treating inflammations of the ear. At the first sign of suppuration Hepar sulph. 12x is very effective, and if there is a danger of septic infection, Lachesis 12x can still save the situation. In cases of prolonged discharge, Silicea 12x taken in alternation with Causti-cum (freshly burnt lime according to Hahnemann) will help. Should there be a tendency to a relapse, recourse to an occasional dose of the constitution-building remedy Baryum carbonicum lOx is indicated.. Anyone prone to ear problems should take the fresh plant extract of ribwort over a longer period of time ...

The use of herbs to treat illnesses was common in all historical eras. Furthermore, many modern drugs have natural origins, and this point of view is pursued and stressed for commercial purposes in any fields of treatment. A plethora of dietary supplements, phytotherapeutics and homeopathic substances are nowadays easy to buy and, for this reason, the thought that natural is equal to safe is becoming widespread among the population. Anyhow, all the substances we take herbs or food, are drugs and thus could cause adverse effects as direct toxicity (e.g. use of foxglove, even a rare case of belladonna berries misidentified as juniper berries) or interaction with other substances. In the latter case, many foods, herbs and spices have already proved to alter co-administered drugs pharmacokinetics and/or pharmacodynamics. The results range from a reduced drug activity to the onset of drug-mediated side effects, thus potentially hampering the efficacy of pharmacological therapy.. ...

Hash Has Hassan - [Originally a male character in 1988 version.] An Assassin by trade but masquerading as a fighter. A swarthy personality, sporting a single gold earring in her left ear, she joined the party hoping that she would have a chance to dispose of old Ignax herself - a fillip without parallel for her reputation. Lacking this opportunity, she would have settle for Augustus, but so far as she was concerned, no one else in the party was worth assassinating. (Hassan had reached the point where she chose her targets on the basis of prestige rather than profit.) Maybe the reason Hassan had survived so long was her magical sword had the power to [steal life from her targets.] One might also expect her to have been liberally equipped with phials of arsenic, belladonna and numerous other poisons, and one would not have been wrong ...
Tonya M. Fosters well-built house of words, A Swarm of Bees In High Court is a rather grand one with many rooms. Belladonna has placed these poems in a handsome volume with cover art by Wangechi Mutu. Max Ernsts painting, A Swarm of Bees in the Palace of Justice at The Menil Foundation in Houston provided a jumping off point for her consideration of shape and color, colored by myriad experiences from an erotic encounter in which the speaker reflects while her lover sleeps his satisfied sleep to bullets and basketball. Bees argue in the rooms of this artful house. They question power. They find sweetness. Change direction. Upend expectation. Find the Queen imperious to pleading or lack of sweetness. Nightshades are plants belonging to the Solanaceae family and are some of the most popular foods consumed today. This group of pants includes over 2,000 species
I can literally hear many of you groan when reading the above list. After all anyone eating a varied healthy diet is going to be including at least two thirds of that list every week. In fact it would seem that nightshades are fundamental to our modern day diet. Its not just the actual tomatoes we are eating but consider pizza, marinara sauce (in fact most pizza sauces) ketchup, barbecue sauce ……. The list could go on and on! Potatoes are also another household staple in the form of baked potatoes, French fries, chips, mashed and roasted potatoes. I think we all eat peppers at least once a week these days in salads or roasted.. So we know we like them, we know we consume them often and we probably thought they were good whole foods we should be including in our diet. So what are the potentially problematic aspects of nightshades?. Alkaloids. Nightshades contain substances called alkaloids, which can cause inflammation and stress. One type of alkaloid in nightshades, Solanine, has been ...

Datura Stramonium.). Natural order.- Solanaceae.. Common names.- Thorn Apple. Jamestown Weed. Stink Weed.. General Analysis.-. Acts chiefly upon the sensorium, increasing its activity, perverting its function, and giving rise to nausea, delirium, and to hallucinations ; simulating in kind the action of Belladonna and Hyoscyamus, yet differing in degree.. The delirium is more furious, the mania more acute, while the congestion, though greater than in Hyoscyamus, is much less than in Belladonna, never approaching a true inflammatory condition.. Stramonium also produces great dryness of the throat and skin, on the latter causing a fiery red rash, resembling that of scarlatina.. On other portions of the body Stramonium only acts through sympathetic irritation from the brain. In this manner it produces dilated pupils, diminished general sensibility, perversion of the special senses, convulsive motions, intense sexual excitement, suppressed urine, etc.. I posted in the other forums because nightshades also have strong affect for people with those conditions. Nightshades really aren t good for anyone, but everyone reacts differently to poisons. The nightshade family (solanaceae) poisons (included in all the nightshades are alkaloids, nicotine [yes nicotine is in tomatoes too], solanine, scopolamine, atropine, and more) build up in our system no matter who we are. My daughter has contracted pink eye (conjuctivitis) three times this school year! This highly contagious infection is common amongst children, and it can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or substances such as pet dander. Whatever the cause, children are not allowed at school with a bright pink eye.. The first time my daughter contracted pink eye, it was clear she had gotten the infection from her best friend. I read extensively online about the infection, and I decided it would go away on its own, despite cautious warnings on websites to take your child to the doctor. I did not want her receiving antibiotics, and I vaguely remember using homeopathy when I contracted pink eye in college. After several days of pink eye misery, I discovered homeopathic Similasan Pink Eye Relief Drops.. Similasan Pink Eye Relief Drops use the active homeopathic ingredients of Belladonna 6x, Euphrasia 6x, and Hepar Sulphurius 12x. According to the principles of homeopathy, the remedies consist of extremely ...
We didnt need to be convinced of the healing powers of homeopathy…and neither do most medical pros we have ever encountered anywhere in the world. Even in the States, plastic and orthopedic surgeons and dermatologists routinely urge the bruise buster- Arnica Montana or Belladonna ---in some format or another---on patients. And FYI the basic premise of homeopathy is to stimulate the body to naturally heal the problem/pain while relieving the sufferer of symptoms, not to temporarily mask them over ...

It involved 24 scientists from three institutions, namely University of Delhi, South Campus (Principal Investigator- Prof. J. P. Khurana); National Institute of Plant Genome Research (Principal Investigator- Dr. D. Chattopadhyay); and ICARs National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (Principal Investigator- Prof. Nagendra Kumar Singh). The Indian project was funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and supported by the ICAR.. The sequence provides a detailed overview of the functional portions of the tomato genome and its closest relative, revealing the order and structure of their 35,000 genes. The tomato belongs to the Solanaceae family, which includes potatoes, peppers and brinjal, as well as ornamental and medicinal plants, such as petunia, tobacco, belladonna and mandrake. The members of this family have adapted to different ...

Milestones in the search for a cure Strychnine and laxatives, antibiotics and vitamins, X-rays and steroids for the suppression of damaging immune reactions: Since Jean-Martin Charcot described MS for the first time as an independent disease in 1868 there have been a great many attempts to research and treat the illness. MS has many faces and it is also characterised by the fact that its symptoms can spontaneously go into remission: This makes it difficult to find therapies which really help. The history of the research and treatment of MS demonstrates how important it is to place research on a comprehensive and reliable data basis in future. Charcot initially experimented with the drugs which were then available for the treatment of neurological problems - for example auric chloride, zinc sulphate, strychnine and electro-stimulation, and later with belladonna, ergot and hydrotherapy. In the 1890s, MS was considered to be a consequence of overexertion and hysteria - patients were ordered ...
Some of the earliest axon pathways to form in the vertebrate forebrain are established as commissural and retinal axons cross the midline of the diencephalon and telencephalon. To better understand axon guidance in the forebrain, we characterized the zebrafish belladonna (bel) mutation, which disrupts commissural and retinal axon guidance in the forebrain. Using a positional cloning strategy, we determined that the bel locus encodes zebrafish Lhx2, a lim-homeodomain transcription factor expressed in the brain, eye and fin buds. We show that bel(lhx2) function is required for patterning in the ventral forebrain and eye, and that loss of bel function leads to alterations in regulatory gene expression, perturbations in axon guidance factors, and the absence of an optic chiasm and forebrain commissures. Our analysis reveals new roles for lhx2 in midline axon guidance, forebrain patterning and eye morphogenesis ...
Harlem, New York poet Tonya M. Fosters first full-length poetry collection is A Swarm of Bees in High Court (Brooklyn NY: Belladonna, 2015), a rhythmic free-style of sharp and precise poems on the immediacty of her space. Her lyrics are dynamic, electric and performative, composed as chants, mantras, sing-song description and sly monologue. Constructed as a book-length poem tied very much to the intricacies of place, A Swarm of Bees in High Court is passionate and tactile, descriptive and vocal; a book very much meant to be heard, and, through her writing, sings off the page. Her poems are infused with lyric, word and soundplay, playing off spoken as much as written language, writing: be low be lack be ridge and grudge / be longing be sotted be ramble and hold / be come and go; be rim and ram the ball into the basket. / be ram-in-the-bush important / be stung be ache be ring / be stung be ache be ring / be reft and reach over / be attitudes of bee sting[.] Her poems are declarative ...

I have noticed many similar reactions, lately! I have Graves, which now includes Thyroid Eye Disease (swelling, bulging, muscle restriction). I was pretty Paleo for about 4 years, and felt so good that I got a bit cocky, adding back some gluten and the odd dairy product. Nightshades were never much of a problem, and I always continued eating potatoes. In the last 6 months since the onset of the eye disease, I notice that I cannot tolerate peppers in any way (not including black pepper) and that my Raynauds acts up almost instantly, and my joints ache as well. Breathing becomes congested. This is a bummer, as I am half West Indian, and it means no curry! No spicy Asian food, either, which is also a favourite. Tomatoes are no longer my friend, and eggplant, my absolute favourite vegetable, and I, have had to break up as well. Potatoes still seem to be okay! I am TRYING to be AIP compliant, as my eyes are becoming pretty bad, but its not easy!! Grains and gluten are not great for me, either, but ...

Solanine is referred to as aceytlcholinesterase inhibitor, which works to stop the breakdown of a neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (ACh), leading to an accrued buildup of ACh in nerve receptor sites. This leads to persistent over-stimulation of ACh receptors, especially those found in the nervous system that contribute to the stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Solanines do not dissolve in water, and cannot be destroyed when cooked, and broken down in the body. It has to be excreted as an alpha-solanine. Alpha-solanine is labeled as a neurotoxin, and many foods containing it, also have around 5 other neurotoxins including nicotine and atropine ...
Dr. Myers and Brianne put Dave and I on their standard elimination diet to we could get to a baseline while we waited for our food sensitivity blood test results. We were already avoiding most of the foods on the list, but just to recap, heres what we were not eating: grains, soy, potatoes, sugar, eggs, nightshades (tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, hot peppers, paprika, chili powder), vinegar (except cider vinegar, which is OK), peanuts, and dairy. After three weeks super strict, we began reintroduction of foods one at a time, and then a few weeks after that, we got our food sensitivity test results.. The good news is that were cleared to eat all nightshades (Hello, again, Rogan Josh and Chocolate Chili!), but Dave might have an issue with eggs, so Im avoiding them, too, in solidarity with him. With peppers and tomatoes back on the menu, eating at home feels like its pretty much back to normal for me. Eating out is, as always, a challenge and because were still in figure it out and ...

A lot of people seem to have offered their interpretations, but Ill toss in mine anyway:. At the end of Season 4, when Brock is poisoned, Jesse searches his pockets and discovers that his ricin cigarette is missing. He concludes that Walt had it stolen when Huell bumped into him, and goes to kill Walt. Walt then convinces Jesse that Gus stole the ricin cigarette to frame Walt. Here, the idea is that because Jesse wont find the ricin cigarette, hell believe Brock was poisoned with it. That is why Walt needed to have Huell steal it.. Early in Season 5, Walt needs to make Jesse not believe that Walt did in fact steal it, since Jesse knows Brock was poisoned with FOTW. He therefore needs to explain why the ricin cigarette is missing. He does this by planting it in the Roomba. Hence, Jesse believes that hed just lost his cigarette into the Rooma, and mistakenly believed that Walt had taken it. (And then mistakenly believed that Gus had taken it to frame Walt.). When Jesse searches his pockets for ...
Calla started it all because I wanted to write a story about a female character who wasnt being pulled into a magical world - she was already in the middle of it, a leader and a warrior. The world of Nightshade came as I tried to figure out how someone like Calla, a girl who I knew was incredibly powerful, could be afraid and angry. What was controlling her? Why would she be fighting against her own destiny? I realized that she was facing off with something even more powerful than herself. Thats where my background as a historian came in. I teach early modern history (1500-1800) - a period of immense, violent change in human societies. This is the time of witchhunts, religious warfare, colonization, the Inquistion; all types of cataclysmic social transformation that turned the lives across the globe upside down. The more I thought about Calla I thought about the ways in which wolf warriors and witches could have intertwined lives. The mythology in Nightshade is a blend of history and lore plus ...
