The Allen Mouse and Human Brain Atlases are projects within the Allen Institute for Brain Science which seek to combine genomics with neuroanatomy by creating gene expression maps for the mouse and human brain. They were initiated in September 2003 with a $100 million donation from Paul G. Allen and the first atlas went public in September 2006. As of May 2012[update], seven brain atlases have been published: Mouse Brain Atlas, Human Brain Atlas, Developing Mouse Brain Atlas, Developing Human Brain Atlas, Mouse Connectivity Atlas, Non-Human Primate Atlas, and Mouse Spinal Cord Atlas.[citation needed] There are also three related projects with data banks: Glioblastoma, Mouse Diversity, and Sleep.[citation needed] It is the hope of the Allen Institute that their findings will help advance various fields of science, especially those surrounding the understanding of neurobiological diseases. The atlases are free and available for public use online. In 2001, Paul Allen gathered a group of scientists, ...

Research-used antibodies continue to be important tools for detection, analysis and characterization of proteins. As reagents, and used in combination with technological platforms, antibodies enable researchers to explore the human body and understand how building-blocks like proteins are produced, distributed and diminished, as well as monitor alteration in time, space and during disease development.. Although many antibodies are available the uniqueness and the performance of these reagents is constantly questioned and remains one of the major challenges in proteomics research. Since the initiation of the Human Protein Atlas project development of antibody as reagents and testing their usefulness has been a major undertaking. A new version of the database published on December 1, 2017 contains the latest achievements regarding enhanced validation of antibodies. The enhanced validation has been defined based on the recommendations from the International Working Group for Antibody Validation ...
Researchers in Sweden are compiling a remarkable atlas, the Human Protein Atlas, that pinpoints the location of thousands of individual proteins in the bodys tissues and cells which will give scientists important insights into the function of different proteins and how changes in the distribution of proteins could be reflected in diseases such as cancer. Professor Mathias Uhlén of the Department of Proteomics at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, who is leading the project, said, "We are trying to map the building blocks of life." The project is hugely ambitious, relying on the selective identification and mapping of thousands of proteins, many of whose function is not yet known, and has required the development of a massive infrastructure to enable the proteins to be identified in a realistic period of time. Uhlén was describing the human protein atlas at the European Science Foundations 3rd Functional Genomics Conference in Innsbruck, Austria, on 1-4 October. Functional ...

A brain atlas is composed of serial sections along different anatomical planes of the healthy or diseased developing or adult animal or human brain where each relevant brain structure is assigned a number of coordinates to define its outline or volume. Brain atlases are contiguous, comprehensive results of visual brain mapping and may include anatomical, genetical or functional features. In most atlases, the three dimensions are: latero-lateral (x), dorso-ventral (y) and rostro-caudal (z). The possible sections are coronal saggital transverse Surface maps are sometimes used in addition to the 3D serial section maps Besides the human brain, brain atlases exist for the brains of the mouse, rhesus macaques, Drosophila and others. Notable examples include the Allen Brain Atlas, BrainMaps, and BigBrain. neuroanatomy stereotaxy Stereotaxic atlas connectome "NeuroMaps Viewer". Neuromaps.braininfo.org:8180. Retrieved 2016-01-30. The Human Protein Atlas is a rich source of location proteomics data. In this work, we present an automated approach for processing and classifying major subcellular patterns in the Atlas images. We demonstrate that two different classification frameworks (support vector machine and random forest) are effective at determining subcellular locations; we can analyze over 3500 Atlas images with a high degree of accuracy, up to 87.5% for all of the samples and 98.5% when only considering samples in whose classification assignments we are most confident. Moreover, the features obtained in both of these frameworks are observed to be highly consistent and generalizable. Additionally, we observe that the features relating the proteins to cell markers are especially important in automated learning approaches.. ...
The "Human Cell" chapters provide a knowledge-based analysis of the human cellular proteomes and an entry into the Human Protein Atlas from different perspectives. The Cell Atlas can be explored on the basis of the transcriptomes of a large panel of human cell lines. This includes the classification of genes with variable and stable expression across the panel. Furthermore, various spatiotemporal aspects of the human proteome can be explored, such as the organelle proteomes, the multilocalizing proteome and the proteome showing single-cell variation. The human proteome can further be explored based on the expression in different organelles and cellular structures. This enables the definition of "organelle proteomes" that indicates the distinct organelle structures and functions. Each separate chapter includes a description of a particular proteome and explorations of protein expression patterns, a complete list of proteins that build a proteome, as well as examples of detailed images ...

In anatomy, the atlas is the top cervical vertebra (neck bones) of the spine. In anatomy, the atlas is written (C1) for short. It is named for the Atlas of mythology, because it supports the head in the same way as Atlas held the world on his shoulders. The atlas connects to a vertebra called the axis. Together they form the joint connecting the skull to the rest of the spine. The atlas and axis are different in shape from all the other vertebrae. They have more movement. They allow the head to nod and to rotate (turn). ...

Threshold of Terror: The Last Hours of the Monarchy in the French Revolution by Rodney Allen is an exciting and engaging piece of work. Allen brings to life the last vestiges of Louis XVIs reign.. The book primarily centers on August 10 and 11, 1792 - when "the mob" stormed the Tuileries to end Louis reign. Allen pays particular attention to the fate of the Swiss Guards - a unit charged with defending the king after his personal guard was disbanded. In describing their fate, Allen dispels many myths about the Swiss Guards - one of which is that the Guards were overwhelmed and in many instances massacred, Allen contends through his research that many Guards were killed, but the unit was far from being completely annihilated.. Although Allen has a particular affinity toward the king, he justly criticizes Louis when he failed to act at certain points (Allen argues that the Revolution could have been halted in its tracks if Louis had just shown some leadership and backbone). For example, Allen ...
Additional notes. Improved atlas surfaces and myelin maps. The Conte69 atlas dataset was derived from Freesurfer segmentation, surface reconstruction, and registration to the fsaverage left and right hemispheres, followed by interhemispheric registration to the left-right hybrid atlas, bringing the two hemispheres into geographic correspondence [1]. The current data release benefits from several refinements in surface generation and in the myelin mapping algorithm compared to the published data [1, 2]. Connectome Workbench data format. The Conte69 atlas dataset is also available in the new Connectome Workbench data format being developed for the Human Connectome Project. A beta-release of Connectome Workbench will be made available in the summer of 2012. REFERENCES. ...

By The Editors - December 8, 2014. Philanthropist and entrepreneur Paul G. Allen today announced a commitment of $100 million to create the Allen Institute for Cell Science in Seattle. Founded to investigate and model the complex living machinery of cells, the nonprofit Allen Institute for Cell Science and its inaugural project, the Allen Cell Observatory, will accelerate disease research around the world by creating and sharing reagents, data, and dynamic, predictive models of cells.. "Cells are the fundamental units of life, with every disease we know of affecting particular types of cells," said Mr. Allen. "Scientists have learned a great deal about many of the 50 trillion cells in our bodies over the last decades, but creating a comprehensive, predictive model of the cell will require a different approach. We conceived of the Allen Institute for Cell Science as a catalyzing force to integrate technologies and approaches at a large scale in order to provide an exceptional resource for the ...
Allen and Farrow engaged in a custody battle after they broke up in January 1992. On August 4, 1992, Allen visited his children at Farrows home by mutual arrangement while she went shopping.[166] According to Mia Farrow, later that day, Dylan Farrow, then aged seven, asked her mother upon her return if "her dad did to her what Woody Allen did to me", stating that she "honestly did not know the answer."[167] Mia Farrow reported this to their pediatrician, who reported the allegations of sexual assault to authorities. Allen was informed of the accusations on August 6. A week later, on August 13, Allen sued for full custody of his biological son, Satchel, and two of Farrows adopted children, Dylan and Moses, with whom Allen had assumed a parental role.[168][164]. In March 1993, the lead doctor of Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Sexual Abuse Clinics investigation into the allegations, Dr Leventhal, gave sworn testimony via a deposition[169] that, in his opinion, Dylan "either invented the story ...

The Caviomorph rodent degu (Octodon degu) is a novel rodent model for researches of higher cognitive brain function. Their social systems are unique and quite different from those of rats and mice. The diurnal degus live in tight-knit, extended family unit with complicated social behaviors, such as vocal communications. Furthermore, we demonstrated that Degu can be trained to use a tool, T-shaped rake. This project aims to create the worlds first digital 3-D brain atlas of Degu, comprising of combined histological and MR images.
Many neuroscientific reports reference discrete macro-anatomical regions of the brain which were delineated according to a brain atlas or parcellation protocol. Currently, however, no widely accepted standards exist for partitioning the cortex and subcortical structures, or for assigning labels to the resulting regions, and many procedures are being actively used. Previous attempts to reconcile neuroanatomical nomenclatures have been largely qualitative, focusing on the development of thesauri or simple semantic mappings between terms. Here we take a fundamentally different approach, discounting the names of regions and instead comparing their definitions as spatial entities in an effort to provide more precise quantitative mappings between anatomical entities as defined by different atlases. We develop an analytical framework for studying this brain atlas concordance problem, and apply these methods in a comparison of eight diverse labeling methods used by the neuroimaging community. These ...
Allen attended Reedley College, a junior college where one of the football assistant coaches at the time was married to Allens cousin.[1] Reedleys offensive coordinator at the time, Ernie Rodriguez, recalled in Eisenbergs story, "He was putting up ungodly numbers and making some incredible throws, but he was getting no love. I didnt understand it. I couldnt believe that nobody wanted him."[2] Allen did not play in the teams first three games in 2014, but in the next game ran for four touchdowns after coming off the bench, and soon became the teams starter,[1] throwing for 25 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions for the rest of the season.[2] By then, he had grown to 65" and 210 pounds (1.96 m, 95 kg), and his coaches at Reedley thought that he would soon receive many FBS scholarship offers. This proved incorrect; near the end of the season, Allen sent a mass email to every head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and quarterback coach in FBS, but received interest from ...
Allen was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 1954 Birthday Honours,[4] promoted to Knight Commander (KCB) in the 1964 Birthday Honours[5] and to Knight Grand Cross (GCB) in the 1970 Birthday Honours.[6]. In 1975, under the provisions of the Referendum Act, he oversaw as "Chief Counting Officer" for the European Communities membership referendum on 5 June, the first referendum ever to be held across the United Kingdom and saw voters approve continued membership by 67% of voters to 32% on a national turnout of 64%. Announced in the 1976 Birthday Honours,[7] Allen was created a life peer as Baron Allen of Abbeydale, of the City of Sheffield, on 12 July 1976.[8] He sat in the House of Lords as a crossbencher. From 1973 to 1978 he was a member of the Pearson commission. He was chairman of the council of Royal Holloway College during its merger with Bedford College in 1985. ...

This brilliantly illustrated atlas provides a simple visual tool to help identify photosynthetic euglenoids, flagellated single celled organisms. The atlas provides basic background information such as the history of the various genera, notes on where they can be found, what the cells look like, and the internal and external structures that can be used to identify species. A dichotomous key provides a simple means to identify each of the genera, and a full glossary defines all of the scientific terms used in the text. The main body of the book consists of high resolution color plates of each of the species, organized by genus. The photographs on each plate illustrate the main features used to identify each organism, such as size and body shape, flagellar length, pellicle structure, type of chloroplast, shape, and arrangement of mucocysts. This text will be useful to phycologists, protozoologists, ecologists studying wetland systems, and managers of reservoirs, lakes, ponds and natural resources. ...

The response of the ATLAS detector to large-radius jets is measured in situ using 36.2 fb(-1) of root s = 13TeV proton-proton collisions provided by the LHC and recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2015 and 2016. The jet energy scale is measured in events where the jet recoils against a reference object, which can be either a calibrated photon, a reconstructed Z boson, or a system of well-measured small-radius jets. The jet energy resolution and a calibration of forward jets are derived using dijet balance measurements. The jet mass response is measured with two methods: using mass peaks formed by W bosons and top quarks with large transverse momenta and by comparing the jet mass measured using the energy deposited in the calorimeter with that using the momenta of charged-particle tracks. The transverse momentum and mass responses in simulations are found to be about 2-3% higher than in data. This difference is adjusted for with a correction factor. The results of the different methods are ...

Although all agree that induction of adult human β-cell proliferation is important, achieving this goal in a therapeutically meaningful manner has been frustratingly difficult. In part, this is the result of an incomplete understanding of the mechanistic details of cell cycle progression in the human β-cell, i.e., the lack of a "wiring diagram" or accurate model of the relevant regulatory molecules. Prior models of the control of the G1/S transition were based on extracts of whole islets (12,18-24,26), which are comprised of multiple different cell types (30-32). Here, we endeavored to develop a comprehensive β-cell-specific G1/S model of cell cycle control. The two broad results of this endeavor, based on 164 separate human cadaver islet preparations, are that we now have an atlas of G1/S molecules that are present in the human β-cell. Equally importantly, we now have a complete and very substantially revised working model of G1/S control in the human β-cell. More specifically, the atlas, ...

In advance of next months launch of a Greek communications satellite, Lockheed Martins second Atlas 5 rocket was transported to the pad Monday for a three-day countdown dress rehearsal. Sitting atop its mobile launch platform, the rocket was rolled from the Complex 41 vehicle assembly building to the open-air pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. Unlike previous launch pad tests, the rocket isnt sporting a nose cone this time. After this rehearsal is completed, the Atlas 5 will be returned to the hangar so its cargo -- the Hellas Sat spacecraft -- can be attached for a planned March 14 blastoff. Following Mondays morning rollout, a few hours were spent connecting the various propellant, electrical and other umbilicals. By early afternoon, the rockets first stage had been loaded with its highly refined kerosene fuel. Workers completed the days activities a few hours ahead of schedule, officials said.
