One of the projected consequences of CO2-induced global warming is an increase in all types of extreme weather, including storms. A good test of the validity of this hypothesis comes from evaluating trends in storminess over the period of time when the Earth was recovering from the global chill of the Little Ice Age and transiting into the Current Warm Period, when the worlds climate alarmists contend the planet experienced a warming that was unprecedented over the prior one to two millennia. In the present section, these claims are evaluated as they pertain to storms over of the North Atlantic Ocean.. ...

Here NAO is short for North Atlantic Oscillation, a climatic phenomenon in the North Atlantic Ocean characterized by fluctuations in the difference of atmospheric pressure at sea level between the Icelandic low and the Azores high. Through east-west oscillation motions of the Icelandic low and the Azores high, it controls the strength and direction of westerly winds and storm tracks across the North Atlantic and is closely related to the Arctic Oscillation (AO). The authors conclude, Our study provides evidence that Helheim Glacier responds to changes in atmosphere-ocean variability on timescales as short as a few years.. Like many other natural climate patterns-the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the El Niño Southern Oscillation, the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation, etc-the NAO is not reliably periodic like the changing of the seasons, but oscillate it does. Indeed, they all do. This means that most any set of conditions caused by these large patterns ...
We estimate the low-frequency internal variability of Northern Hemisphere (NH) mean temperature using observed temperature variations, which include both forced and internal variability components, and several alternative model simulations of the (natural + anthropogenic) forced component alone. We then generate an ensemble of alternative historical temperature histories based on the statistics of the estimated internal variability. Using this ensemble, we show, firstly, that recent NH mean temperatures fall within the range of expected multidecadal variability. Using the synthetic temperature histories, we also show that certain procedures used in past studies to estimate internal variability, and in particular, an internal multidecadal oscillation termed the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation or AMO, fail to isolate the true internal variability when it is a priori known. Such procedures yield an AMO signal with an inflated amplitude and biased phase, attributing some of the recent NH mean ...
FC: Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade By Brandon Felton. 1: Back in the 1800s there was The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. People No matter how old or young they were Taken from Africa and sold for money. The healthy ones where made to do pain staking work the fields or whatever their masters wanted it was very sad. They were not treated like you and me they were treated like property. A thing just put on this earth to make money Just because they where different And there was a lot of them also all the money the traders made was profit since the traders were going to sell them to people so the people had them do whatever they wanted not matter how petty or pain staking it is. Could have them do anything from cleaning or the slaves could be made to cook and work the fields.. 2: How the gathering of slaves started Traders and strange men not familiar to African people came to the Island of Africa. Scared of these Traders the African people and. From children to man or women was taken on a ship that was new ...

Résumé: We will present the combined results of the French GEOTRACES GEOVIDE cruise in the North Atlantic Ocean and the 2015 German GEOTRACES cruise TransArc II in the central Arctic Ocean. Research vessel Pourquoi pas? sailed on May 15th from Lisbon to Greenland to arrive in Newfoundland on June 30th 2014, and icebreaker Polarstern sailed on August 17th from Tromsoe to explore the Nansen, the Amundsen and the Makarov basins, to arrive in Bremerhaven on October 15th 2015. Total mercury was sampled using ultra-trace clean rosettes and determined on board. In the Atlantic Ocean, surface waters of the Gulf Stream are cooled down as they travel north, and mix at the same time with waters exiting the Arctic Ocean via Fram Strait. These cool and dense surface waters dive to depth in the Greenland and Labrador seas. The North Atlantic Ocean predominantly receives Hg via atmospheric deposition from Europe and North America where industrial Hg emissions peaked in the 1970s. The Hg inputs to the ...

The Cleveland Cavaliers were embarrassed in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Boston Celtics manhandled them and tortured them into submission. It may have been one of the worst performances by an elite team and a superstar like LeBron James in a huge playoff game in a long time. The Celtics won the game by 32 points, 120-88, to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series and now they have a chance to close out the series at home on Thursday night.. Not many people gave the Celtics a chance coming into this series. Most people thought the Cavs would win this series easily, maybe a sweep or in five games. But the Celtics proved right away in Game 1 that they meant business, as they held a double-digit lead over the Cavs before blowing that lead and allowing the ...
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - After being dead for years, the Celtics-Lakers rivalry finally came back to life last night.. The Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals by defeating the Detroit Pistons, 89-81, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Boston won its 20th conference crown and will make its first Finals appearance since 1987. The Celtics will play the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals for the 11th time, having won eight.. Im just happy to be a part of this, man, said Celtics forward Paul Pierce, who scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter. Its been a long process. I could write a whole book on my emotions right now. But Im just happy to be in this position, still with the Boston Celtics.. It makes me think about a year ago today what I was doing. To be in this position with the same team going to the Finals, its nothing I can really put into words.. Game 1 of the Finals is Thursday at TD Banknorth Garden. Celtics ...

The present study investigates the performances of the three-dimensional multicomponent hydro-sedimentary model ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) to predict near-surface suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) in the English Channel (western Europe). Predictions are assessed against satellite-retrieved observations from raw MODIS and MERIS images for the year 2008 characterized by the highest availability of cloud-free data. Focus is put on improvements obtained with: (1) SSC inputs at the open boundaries; and (2) simple parameterizations of the settling velocity and the critical shear stress. Sensitivity studies confirm the importance of the advection of fine-grained suspended sediments in the central waters of the English Channel exhibiting benefits of refined SSC estimations along the sea boundaries. Improvements obtained with modified formulations of the settling velocity and the critical shear stress finally suggest possible seasonal influences of biological activity and thermal stratification
Uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean declined rapidly between 1990 and 2006. This reduction in carbon dioxide uptake was related to warming at the sea surface, which-according to model simulations-coincided with a reduction in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. The extent to which the slowdown of this circulation system-which transports warm surface waters to the northern high latitudes, and cool deep waters south-contributed to the reduction in carbon uptake has remained uncertain. Here, we use data on the oceanic transport of volume, heat and carbon dioxide to track carbon dioxide uptake in the subtropical and subpolar regions of the North Atlantic Ocean over the past two decades. We separate anthropogenic carbon from natural carbon by assuming that the latter corresponds to a pre-industrial atmosphere, whereas the remaining is anthropogenic. We find that the uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide-released by human activities-occurred almost ...
As Typhoon Haiyan made landfall, CNBC claimed it was just another natural storm, and invited well-known climate denier Joe Bastardi on-air who blamed sea level rise on warm Atlantic multidecadal oscillation.. Its clear that CNBC still hasnt gotten the message that climate denial is bad for business (and the future of modern civilization). Investors want facts, not lies. Thats why were working with our friends at Media Matters and Environmental Action to take our message to CNBCs core audience: the financial industry.. Already 45,000 Forecast the Facts members have signed the petition demanding CNBC start reporting the economic risks of fossil-fueled climate change. We delivered those petitions directly to CNBC headquarters. But, a Media Matters report shows that CNBCs climate coverage has continued to worsen.. By taking our ad to two of the worlds largest financial centers, well be able to expose CNBCs climate denial to the folks the network cares about: businesses and investors. In ...

In the end, the Celtics needed a missed free throw from Al Horford to help seal the series, but given the injury-packed grind that this series has been, theyll take it. Its on to the conference semifinals. For the Celtics, this marks a continuation of a run of success the franchise has not seen since the Larry Bird-Robert Parish-Kevin McHale heyday. Boston has not reached the second round of the playoffs in five straight years since 1988. Before the game ended, the Celtics already knew that, with a win, they would play the eighth-seeded Sixers, who knocked off the Bulls in Philadelphia on Thursday. There was no question who carried the team on this night-Kevin Garnett, who wrapped up the game with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Garnett also had three steals and, for just the third time in his Boston career, five blocked shots. Paul Pierce, playing through a knee injury, wound up with 18 points, five rebounds and seven assists. The Hawks controlled the game early, limiting the Celtics to 35.0 ...
Celtic manager Neil Lennon has stepped down following a dismal campaign that has left the Scottish Premiership club 18 points behind leaders Rangers.. Lennons last game in charge was Sundays 1-0 defeat to Ross County.. Lennon, who returned to the club for a second stint in charge after Brendan Rodgers left to take over at Leicester in February 2019, has been under pressure all season but had previously maintained he would not quit.. Lennon apologised for letting fans down again after the defeat by Ross County left Celtics bid to win a 10th consecutive title in disarray.. The loss also heightened the prospect of Rangers clinching the title at Parkhead on March 21.. Since returning to the club, Lennon has led Celtic to two titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.. A club statement said: Celtic Football Club today announced Neil Lennon has resigned from his position as football manager with immediate effect.. Neil has served the club with distinction as both player and manager, delivering ...

The Atlantic herring is a model species for exploring the genetic basis for ecological adaptation, due to its huge population size and extremely low genetic differentiation at selectively neutral loci. However, such studies have so far been hampered because of a highly fragmented genome assembly. Here, we deliver a chromosome-level genome assembly based on a hybrid approach combining a de novo Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) assembly with Hi-C-supported scaffolding. The assembly comprises 26 autosomes with sizes ranging from 12.4 to 33.1 Mb and a total size, in chromosomes, of 726 Mb, which has been corroborated by a high-resolution linkage map. A comparison between the herring genome assembly with other high-quality assemblies from bony fishes revealed few inter-chromosomal but frequent intra-chromosomal rearrangements. The improved assembly facilitates analysis of previously intractable large-scale structural variation, allowing, for example, the detection of a 7.8-Mb inversion on Chromosome 12 ...

For the first time, a NASA satellite has quantified in three dimensions how much dust makes the trans-Atlantic journey from the Sahara Desert the Amazon rainforest. Among this dust is phosphorus, an essential nutrient that acts like a fertilizer, which the Amazon depends on in order to flourish. The new dust transport estimates were derived from data collected by a lidar instrument on NASAs Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation, or CALIPSO, satellite from 2007 though 2013. The data show that wind and weather pick up on average 182 million tons of dust each year and carry it past the western edge of the Sahara at longitude 15W. This volume is the equivalent of 689,290 semi trucks filled with dust. The dust then travels 1,600 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, though some drops to the surface or is flushed from the sky by rain. Near the eastern coast of South America, at longitude 35W, 132 million tons remain in the air, and 27.7 million tons - enough to fill 104,908 semi
Annually resolved coral delta O-18 and Sr/Ca records from southwestern Puerto Rico are used to investigate Caribbean climate variability between 1751 and 2004 C. E. Mean surface ocean temperatures in this region have increased steadily by about 2 degrees C since the year 1751, with Sr/Ca data indicating 2.1 +/- 0.8 degrees C and delta O-18 data indicating 2.7 +/- 0.5 degrees C. Coral geochemical records from across the tropics demonstrate that regional variability is important for understanding climate variations at centennial time scales. A strong multidecadal salinity signal in the oxygen isotope data correlates with observed multidecadal temperature variations in the Northern Hemisphere. Instrumental wind and precipitation data indicate that the most recent coral isotopic variations are caused by expansion and contraction of the steep regional salinity gradient, forced by trade wind anomalies through meridional Ekman transport. The timing of the fluctuations suggests that the ...

WALTHAM, Mass. - When Brad Stevens studied the video of Bostons last game against Cleveland, he skipped over a handful of plays and put the sound on mute.. I didnt want to watch the injury or what happened after it, the Celtics coach said on Tuesday, a day before his team was to play the Cavaliers for the first time since Gordon Hayward broke his leg in the season opener. I just didnt want to rehash that moment, obviously.. Bostons top free agent acquisition last summer, Hayward went down in a heap in the first quarter of the first game and is expected to be lost for the season. The gruesome injury cast a pall on the opener and upended the Celtics plans to supplant the Cavaliers as Eastern Conference champions.. It was the first game of the season, forward Jaylen Brown said. When Gordon went down, it was a traumatic moment for everybody.. But the game - and the season - went on.. The demoralized Celtics erased an 18-point, third-quarter deficit in the opener before losing by three. ...
Kyrie Irving provided plenty of insight on Friday into what led him to re-consider a pledge to re-sign with the Celtics and, ultimately, join the Brooklyn Nets.. Irving said one of the most important factors for him in signing with the Nets was returning home. He grew up in West Orange, NJ. He said the death of his grandfather early last season impacted him significantly. In the aftermath of his grandfathers death, Irving began to re-think the idea of re-signing with the Celtics. Prior to the season, he said in front of the crowd at Celtics home arena that he planned to re-sign with the club.. After that, a lot of things happened in my personal life that really changed the landscape of how I felt about the game of basketball and actually playing it in a team environment and that really affected me as a human being, Irving said. I didnt share it with anyone. I didnt want to come out and say that this is bothering me or Im in a depression at this point in dealing with the death of my ...
Rest and recovery were of much greater importance as both teams looked ahead to the postseason and patched together lineups that hardly resembled last years second-round playoff series. The result was sloppy at times, but turned into a relatively even matchup before the seldom-used Celtics rallied for a 78-66 win over the starless Heat on Tuesday night. Sasha Pavlovic led Boston with a season-high 16 points, scoring 12 in the fourth quarter as the Celtics pulled away by shooting 50 percent (11 for 22) in the period and forcing Miami into eight of its season-high 25 turnovers. Well, someone had to win the game and we did, which was really nice, Boston coach Doc Rivers said. You know, these games are still important, probably for both teams. But not important enough to risk anybodys playoff status. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were out for the Heat. Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo didnt play for the Celtics. Rivers said Rondo and Garnett should be back in the lineup on ...

SPORTSINTERACTION. The Lakers won Game 3, 91-84. The Lakers held a nine-point lead after the first quarter and a 12-point lead at the half before the Celtics made a nice comeback and cut the lead to six after the third quarter. The Celtics had many chances in the fourth quarter but the Lakers held on for the victory.. Kobe only shot 10-of-29 from the field and 1-of-7 from 3-point range, but he scored 29 points. Pau Gasol had a solid effort with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lamar Odom scored 12 points off the bench, the most he has scored in a game this series. But it was Derek Fisher who made the big shots down the stretch and propelled the Lakers to victory. The veteran point guard scored 16 points in the win.. Kevin Garnett had one of his best offensive games of the playoffs, scoring 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field to lead the Celtics. Paul Pierce chipped in with 15 points and Rajon Rondo had 11 points and eight assists. Kendrick Perkins only scored five points but he grabbed 11 ...

The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is a large (up to 17 m) whale, generally black in colour with occasional white belly patches and no dorsal fin. Right whales were once common in temperate waters of the Western Atlantic but were seriously depleted by whaling. An accurate population estimate for the species is yet to be calculated. The population of North Atlantic right whales in Atlantic Canadian waters was estimated in 2003 to number about 322 animals; however more recent estimates suggest the current population numbers about 350 animals. North Atlantic right whales are protected and listed under Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA).

In a new study published this week in Endangered Species Research, North Atlantic right whale scientists found that whales who undergo prolonged entanglements in fishing gear endure sky-high hormone levels, indicating severe stress, which researchers discovered using a pioneering technique of examining scat from live, entangled, and dead whales over 15 years.
The tiny population of critically-endangered North Atlantic right whales may not have had any calves this year, scientists fear, in what would be an “unprecedented” calamity for the species.
Particles emitted during major volcanic eruptions cool the atmosphere due to a parasol effect that reflects sunlight. The direct impact of these particles in the atmosphere is fairly short, lasting two to three years. However, they alter for more than 20 years the North Atlantic Ocean circulation, which connects surface and deep currents and influences the climate in Europe.

Abstract:. Stock structure hypotheses for North Atlantic fin whales, Balaenoptera physalus, have based largely molecular genetic analyses. This paper describes fin whale photo-identification catalogues in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea that may house data useful for testing these hypotheses. There are three independent fin whale catalogues in the western North Atlantic. The North Atlantic Fin Whale Catalogue presently contains 841 unique individuals sampled along the coast of North America, from the New York Bight north to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Two catalogues in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, held by the Mingan Island Cetacean Study (MICS, n=430) and the Groupe de Recherche et dÉducation sur les Mammifères Marins (GREMM, n=100), expect to begin reconcile their catalogues in the near future. A few small photo-ID holdings were identified in the eastern North Atlantic and the Europhlukes project provides an alternate option for photo-identification data across a wide range of ...
Bluefin tunas are highly prized pelagic fish species representing a significant economic resource to fisheries throughout the world. Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) populations have significantly declined due to overexploitation. As a consequence of their value and population decline, T. thynnus has been the focus of considerable research effort concerning many aspects of their life history. However, in-depth understanding of T. thynnus reproductive biology is still lacking. Knowledge of reproductive physiology is a very important tool for determining effective fisheries and aquaculture management. Transcriptome techniques are proving powerful and provide novel insights into physiological processes. Construction of a microarray from T. thynnus ESTs sourced from reproductive tissues has provided an ideal platform to study the reproductive physiology of bluefin tunas. The aim of this investigation was to compare transcription profiles from the ovaries and testes of mature T. thynnus to establish
ABSTRACT: The location of mating grounds used by Endangered North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis has eluded discovery despite centuries of whaling and decades of marine mammal surveys. If this species gestation duration is similar to the closely related southern right whale E. australis, then conception for the North Atlantic right whale occurs in the boreal winter. Between 2002 and 2008, aerial surveys identified half the North Atlantic population in the central Gulf of Maine between November and January. Generalized linear models indicated that significantly higher proportions of both known fathers and conceptive females were present in this region compared to most other areas seasonally inhabited by right whales. Their presence in the central Gulf of Maine during the estimated conception period strongly suggests that this region is a mating ground for the species. Roseway Basin, on the southwestern Scotian Shelf, also had high proportions of reproductive whales and may be the site ...

Belfast Celtic Football Club was a football club in Northern Ireland that was founded in 1891, and was one of the most successful teams in Ireland until it withdrew from the Irish League in 1949. It left the league for political reasons, as the team and its supporters were largely Catholic and Irish nationalist, and its players had been violently attacked by a mob against its main rival Linfield in December 1948. Belfast Celtic were one of four clubs that made the biggest crowds in the Irish League, the other three being Linfield, Distillery, and Glentoran. The club, formed in 1891 simply as Celtic, was named after Celtic Football Club of Glasgow. Upon incorporation as a limited company in 1901, however, the club adopted the name Belfast Celtic, the title The Celtic Football & Athletic Coy Ltd already being registered by the Glasgow club. Their home from the same year was Celtic Park on Donegall Road in west Belfast, known to the fans as Paradise. Celtic won their first league title in 1900 ...
In many marine fish species, genetic population structure is typically weak because populations are large, evolutionarily young and have a high potential for gene flow. We tested whether genetic markers influenced by natural selection are more efficient than the presumed neutral genetic markers to detect population structure in Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), a migratory pelagic species with large effective population sizes. We compared the spatial and temporal patterns of divergence and statistical power of three traditional genetic marker types, microsatellites, allozymes and mitochondrial DNA, with one microsatellite locus, Cpa112, previously shown to be influenced by divergent selection associated with salinity, and one locus located in the major histocompatibility complex class IIA (MHC-IIA) gene, using the same individuals across analyses. Samples were collected in 2002 and 2003 at two locations in the North Sea, one location in the Skagerrak and one location in the low-saline Baltic ...
September 28, 2018 - SEAFOOD NEWS - A recent technical memorandum from NOAA on right whale recovery in 2018 could push the agency to require new limits on trap fishing technology.. In short, the memorandum says that the measures adopted to reduce the number of rope lines in the water have backfired.. Although the number of lines to individual buoys have been reduced, the remaining trawl strings have more traps and stronger rope.. The result is that whales are suffering more for entanglements than they were before the new rules were introduced.. The memorandum says that stronger rope contributed to an increase in the severity of entanglements.. Knowlton et al.(2012) showed that nearly 85% of right whales have been entangled in fishing gear at least once, 59% at least twice, and 26% of the regularly seen animals are entangled annually. These findings represent a continued increase in the percentage of whales encountering and entangling in gear, which grew from to 61.5% in 1995 (Hamilton et al. ...

Through the use of autonomous vehicles and sensors, well be able to strengthen our ability to monitor and locate right whales, identifying their real-time locations, said Sara Iverson, professor, Department of Biology and Scientific Director of the Ocean Tracking Network which co-leads DAMOS. Through technology, well also be able to relay that information to the shipping and fishing fleets who share the sea with the right whales, allowing them to chart a course that mitigates conflict with this endangered species.. Found mostly along the Atlantic Coast, right whales have been threatened by entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with ships. Its estimated that less than 500 right whales are in existence. This past summer, an unprecedented number of North Atlantic right whale mortalities were reported in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.. ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Progressive changes in the Western English Channel foster a reorganization in the plankton food web. AU - Reygondeau, Gabriel. AU - Molinero, J.C.. AU - Coombs, S.. AU - MacKenzie, Brian. AU - Bonnet, D.. PY - 2015. Y1 - 2015. N2 - Growing evidence has shown a profound modification of plankton communities of the North East Atlantic and adjacent seas over the past decades. This drastic change has been attributed to a modification of the environmental conditions that regulate the dynamics and the spatial distribution of ectothermic species in the ocean. Recently, several studies have highlighted modifications of the regional climate station L4 (50° 15.00N, 4° 13.02W) in the Western English Channel. We here focus on the modification of the plankton community by studying the long-term, annual and seasonal changes of five zooplankton groups and eight copepod genera. We detail the main composition and the phenology of the plankton communities during four climatic periods identified ...
Not only did Foster give birth here, but so did her daughter. That made Foster one of a pair of new grandmothers among the 20 North Atlantic right whales that calved this winter.. More impressive than the Southeasts grandma whales may be the only right whale known to have given birth up north this year. Shes an old-timer named Wart, who had a grand-calf and also a great-grand-calf born this season. Right whales mature at about age 10 and give birth every three to five years.. And then theres a whale known only by her number, 1334. She gave birth to yet another approximately 12-foot, 2,000-pound bundle of joy this season. The new calf is her ninth recorded offspring, making her the most prolific right whale known.. The tally of births for the season, which is winding down in Georgia, is about average but comes as a relief after last years low count of only six babies born to the highly endangered species.. Right whale aerial surveys will continue through March 31 in south Georgia and through ...
The largest populations of the species are currently distributed in the South Atlantic Ocean. Although a number of provisional stocks have been described for the species based on historically whaling records and geographic distribution of the wintering grounds, the rates of migratory interchange or degree of isolation among these populations are still poorly known ...
Celtic brooches, also known as penannular metal brooches, are a popular type of clothes fastener associated with the Early Medieval period in the British Isles. Penannular means formed as an incomplete ring. Celtic brooches also pre-date Medieval times, dating back as far as the Iron Age and Roman times. Many centuries ago, Celtic brooches were worn by both men and women as significant status symbols in society. Much of societys elite wore these brooches in both Ireland and Scotland from 700 to 900 A.D. In Ireland, Celtic brooches were also worn by clergy to fasten copes and vestments (long loose garments worn during ceremonies).. Today, they are worn as style statements on clothes like jackets and sweaters. Celtic brooches typically use lots of knots and styles that symbolize Ireland. A famous example of such a brooch is the ornate Tara Brooch, discovered in Ireland in 1850. ...

Detection of population genetic structure of zooplankton at medium-to-small spatial scales in the absence of physical barriers has remained challenging and controversial. The large population sizes and high rates of gene flow characteristic of zooplankton have made resolution of geographical differentiation very difficult, especially when using few genetic markers and assuming equilibrium conditions. Next-generation sequencing now allows simultaneous sampling of hundreds to thousands of genetic markers; new analytical approaches allow studies under nonequilibrium conditions and directional migration. Samples of the North Atlantic Ocean planktonic copepod, Centropages typicus, were analysed using restriction site-associated DNA (RAD) sequencing on a PROTON platform. Although prior studies revealed no genetic differentiation of populations across the geographical range of the species, analysis of RAD tags showed significant structure across the North Atlantic Ocean. We also compared the likelihood ...
The central North Atlantic Ocean is a remote region where transport of pollutants from North America, Europe, and Africa has been observed. The meteorology in this region is usually controlled by a persistent mid-latitude anticyclone, known as the Azores-Bermuda High. Its strength and location change seasonally and interannually, causing synoptic transport patterns to vary, bringing air masses from different continents. There has been much effort to study the tropospheric chemistry and long-range transport over the North Atlantic. In the 1990s, the North Atlantic Regional Experiment (NARE, (Fehsenfeld et al., 1996)) was conducted to investigate transport of CO and O3 from North America. It was found that transport of air pollutants has a significant influence on air composition over the North Atlantic Ocean. During the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT, Fehsenfeld et al., 2006) experiment, observations including ground and aircraft ...
Title in Polish - 'Polska polityka zagraniczna wobec rozbieznosci w stosunkach transatlantyckich na tle konfliktów w bylej Jugosławii'). The conflicts in the former Yugoslavia provided a backdrop to numerous controversies between the Americans and their European allies. When, in the first half of the 1990s, divergences emerged, i.a. regarding the recognition of the independence of the former Yugoslavian republics and disparate concepts as to how the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina might be headed off, Polish diplomacy avoided becoming involved in the solving of these problems. However, when a position had to be taken, it supported, as a rule, the policy of the EU member countries (e.g., regarding the recognition of Slovenia and Croatia). In the twilight of the 20th century, it was the conflict in Kosovo which became a source of divergent opinions in the trans-Atlantic community. A clear difference of standpoint emerged between the US and some of the European allies, in particular ...

The North Atlantic right whale, Eubalaena glacialis, is among the most endangered of the worlds large whales with an estimated population of 350-400 individuals.
In response to a call from the US National Research Council for research programs to combine their data to improve sea turtle population assessments, we analyzed somatic growth data for Northwest Atlantic (NWA) loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from 10 research programs. We assessed growth dynamics over wide ranges of geography (9-33°N latitude), time (1978-2012), and body size (35.4-103.3 cm carapace length). Generalized additive models revealed significant spatial and temporal variation in growth rates and a significant decline in growth rates with increasing body size. Growth was more rapid in waters south of the USA (|24°N) than in USA waters. Growth dynamics in southern waters in the NWA need more study because sample size was small. Within USA waters, the significant spatial effect in growth rates of immature loggerheads did not exhibit a consistent latitudinal trend. Growth rates declined significantly from 1997 through 2007 and then leveled off or increased....
The Celtic Sea groundfish community consists of over a hundred species, but the 25 most abundant of these account for 99 percent of the total estimated biomass. The most abundant species are haddock, whiting, and pout Trisopterus spp. Common flatfish species in this ecoregion include dab Limanda limanda, plaice Pleuronectes platessa, and several species of sole and megrim. Pelagic fish species along the shelf edge are boarfish, blue whiting, mackerel, and horse mackerel while Muellers pearlside Maurolicus muelleri, glacial lantern fish Benthosema glaciale, and lancet fish Alepisauridae are the dominant mesopelagic species. These pelagic and mesopelagic species are important parts of the foodweb in this ecoregion and changes in their abundance can have significant consequences for the marine food chain. Trends in fishing pressure and stock size are presented in the Selective extraction of species section. ...
Notochord flexion increases the swimming capacity of fish larvae, aids in the capture of mobile prey, and coincides with the timing of when the physiological capacities of larvae begin to develop significantly, allowing an early shift to piscivory. Therefore, reaching the flexion stage as soon as possible can be considered beneficial for the growth and survival of the larvae. Individual growth differences of larvae from the same cohort are very common before reaching flexion and the potential explanation is still unknown. In this study, we examined if the nutritional status of the larvae, measured by the RNA:DNA and DNA:DW ratios, explains the differences in the development of notochord flexion in laboratory-reared Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; Thunnus thynnus) and Atlantic bonito (AB; Sarda sarda) larvae. Moreover, we described the ontogeny of the different stages and condition indices. The daily average condition of ABFT estimated by the RNA:DNA and DNA:DW ratios increased with larval ...
When the seas subsided, Scotland emerged to face yet another ordeal, this time by fire. Scotland was still bound to the eastern flank of North America around 65 million years ago, but yet another substantial re-arrangement of the continents created the North Atlantic Ocean. It developed as a tear in the Earths crust, with volcanic eruptions adding new rocks along the central spine of the nascent ocean.. The associated stretching and thinning of the Earths crust near the margin of the emergent ocean allowed molten rock to break through the crust to form a line of volcanoes running from St Kilda to Ailsa Craig. Many individual volcanoes were active over a period of about 5 million years (Ben More on Mull, Ardnamurchan, Rum, Skye, St Kilda and Rockall), throwing ash clouds high into the air and spewing out vast thicknesses of lava.. The island of Skye is perhaps the finest example of an ancient volcano whose bowels and inner plumbing have been laid bare by the elements. The scarp face and gently ...

Strange things continue to happen in our wildlife world. On Jan. 12, a North Atlantic right whale mother and calf were found living in Cape Cod Bay.
Protecting right whale mothers and their young is critical to the recovery of the population, said Barb Zoodsma, NOAA Fisheries Service right whale biologist. The loss of any right whale is of concern, and we ask for everyone to adhere to measures that protect this critically endangered species.. Each year, pregnant females migrate southward more than 1,000 miles from feeding areas off Canada and New England to the warm, calm, coastal waters off South Carolina, Georgia and northeastern Florida to give birth and nurse their young. These waters are the only known calving area for the species.. Collisions with ships and entanglement in fixed fishing gear are the two greatest threats to the recovery of North Atlantic right whales, which is why it is important that all mariners and fishers are aware of the regulations. ...
Death came quickly for the calf. For the adult nicknamed Cottontail, it took months. There are fewer than 375 North Atlantic right whales left. The two leading threats pushing them closer to extinction are entanglement in commercial fishing gear and being hit by ships and boats. Within two weeks last month, the Southeast coast saw…

Another unusual event occurred that day as many passengers got a chance to see a critically-endangered North Atlantic right whale. This whale was breaching within view of Long Point at the very tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown. Because of their critically endangered status (it is estimated that there are only between 350 - 400 of these animals left on the entire planet) a great deal of research effort is devoted to their population. Despite the heavy survey effort, there is still a lot that we dont know about these animals. At this time of year, many of the right whales in the population spend their time in the Great South Channel on their way up to the Bay of Fundy. Why would this particular animal return to Cape Cod Bay, a primary feeding ground in the late winter and early spring?. Due to federal regulations which require that we stay at least 500 yards from these animals, we were not able to get too close, but as we rounded Long Point on our way back to Provincetown Harbor, we felt excited ...
This study aimed to evaluate the shelf-life of mechanically filleted well-fed Atlantic mackerel during frozen storage at −25 °C and effect of treatment with antioxidants (sodium erythorbate and a polyphosphate mixture) and different antioxidant application methods (dipping, spraying and glazing). Both physicochemical measurements and sensory analysis were applied. Antioxidant treatments prolonged shelf-life of mackerel. Sensory analysis indicated that untreated fillets had a shelf-life of less than 2.5 months, while all antioxidant treated fillets exceeded that. The most effective treatment, dipping fillets into a sodium erythorbate solution, yielding a shelf-life of 15 months. Physicochemical methods used to evaluate degradation of lipids in the fillets were free fatty acids (FFA), lipid hydroperoxides (PV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). They did not correlate with sensory results and might therefore be a questionable choice for evaluation of oxidation and development of rancid

Ships travelling in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence no longer have to follow a temporary mandatory slowdown.. Transport Canada put a speed restriction in place last summer after the deaths of 12 North Atlantic Right Whales in the Gulf - many of which died from ship strikes.. No sightings of Right Whales have been recorded in recent weeks according to Transport Minister Marc Garneau.. Garneau says his department didnt hesitate to issue fines during the speed restriction and continues to investigate all reported cases of non-compliance.. He adds the federal government is continuing to work with partners including scientific experts along with industry and environmental groups to ensure these marine mammals are protected.. A new study of more than 100 North Atlantic right whales over 15 years shows the analysis of a hormone product in the animals waste can provide information on their stress levels and health.. (From Boston Globe/ By Ben Thompson) - These levels show stress from extreme physical trauma, lead study author Rosalind Rolland, a senior scientist at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, said in a statement.. Its an animal welfare issue, she said. For the first time, we can get hormone levels on not just dead but living whales.. The study, published this week in Endangered Species Research, covers the pioneering technique developed by Rolland used to examine feces taken from 125 right whales from 1999 to 2014. That group included a mix of 113 healthy whales, six that were chronically entangled in fishing gear, one that stranded for several days, and five that were quickly killed by vessel strikes, the aquarium said.. ...
