Injuries are a part of sport - but even more so in masters sport. Almost 200 competitors have been treated for injuries sustained in the first six days of the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin. Co-ordinator Graeme Harvey, who has run the sports injury clinic since the event began 26 years ago, said the majority of competitors had suffered lower limb injuries. "They arrive here thinking they are 21, but leave here realising they are more like 121, he said. Four of the injured competitors had torn their Achilles tendons, the worst injury so far, Harvey said. "The most unfortunate guy was a guy who came down from Wanganui for football. He had 10 minutes on the paddock and somebody fell on him and broke his foot. "There has been knees, hamstrings, hips, calves and ankle injuries. There were a few fingers in the netball and were expecting more in the basketball. It takes a team of 32 to service the three sports injury clinics for the games. Nineteen are sports medics, the majority of them ...

The Paralympic Games is today one of the largest sport event in the world. During the last decades parasport has in many ways become elite sport, allowing people with disabilities to achieve extraordinary heights of functional capability. With the growing number of athletes there is an increased interest in athletes health and safety, both to enhance sports performance and to prevent injuries.. Even though it is well-known that participation in sports places the athlete at risk for injuries, there are few studies covering sports-related injuries and illnesses in parasport (SRIIP). Today, some injuries and illnesses are known to be preventable. However, this requires regular monitoring of internal and external load during athletic preparation. Standardized injury surveillances have been implemented within several sports for abled-bodied athletes, but such studies do not yet exist within parasport.. In our review article (Fagher & Lexell 2014) the investigators showed that existing studies of ...
Here are some simple exercises that can help strengthen weak points to prevent ankle, knee, and hamstrings injuries, shin splints, and other athletic injuries.
I was reading today an article in the NY Times concerning athletic injuries in aging athletes (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/17/health/nutrition/17best.html?8dpc). A thoughtful article, although I am surprised they did not ask the opinion of a non medical style provider. Is being an overachiever athletically a psychological problem? I have been treating older athletes for years. It is always sad when an athlete has numerous injuries that are termed as overuse and then gives up the sport they love because the injuries continue to pile up. I too injured my back playing softball this season and I am likely not to return. Many athletes we treat have chronic problems because they are misunderstood. Stress fractures, knee pain, hip pain, shoulder problems are often looked at as separate entities. The reality is that they are usually part of a gait related issue, causing the person to slam their foot into the ground. It is my experience that most health care providers are trained to look at the pain, ...
WHAT IS MALLET FINGER?. Mallet finger occurs when the outermost joint of the finger is injured. With mallet finger, the tendon on the back of the finger is separated from the muscles it connects.. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?. Commonly an athletic injury where basketball and baseball players routinely experience jammed fingers, but the injury can occur because of a crushing accident on the job or even because of a cut finger while working in the kitchen.. HOW TO PREVENT MALLET FINGER?. To prevent such injuries, take care when participating in activities, including athletic events. To prevent injuries from happening again to the same finger, leave the splint on for the entire time the doctor has recommended.. WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS?. If the finger is not broken or cut, or if only a small fracture is present, the doctor applies a splint to the end of the finger so it remains extended. With a splint, the outermost joint on the injured finger is not bendable, but the rest of the finger is bendable. This ...

Author: Emmet Teran, Arts Editor. The Athletic Injury Center (AIC) is ostensibly dedicated to serving an estimated 750 to 800 University students, representing 29 varsity sports teams as well as a select set of club teams. However, students across the Universitys varying levels of athletic recognition have expressed concerns with the AICs ability to administer the necessary level of care.. In addition to Director Joe Fountain, the AIC employs two full-time assistant trainers, Kevin Dompier, and Laura Litwin, and one part-time trainer, Evan Davis. The AIC also partners with a general practitioner, Dr. Adam Perrin, and a specialist in orthopedic rehabilitation, Dr. David Hergan. This core staff is supplemented by various per diem trainers, as well as medical personnel who work on a contest-by-contest basis and are funded through the Universitys operating budget.. With such high demand for their limited staff, Fountain and Athletic Director Michael Whalen 83 must navigate pressures from the ...

Excessive forced-inversion movement of the ankle causes damage to the ligaments on the outside of the foot. More complex injuries can also cause damage to other areas of the foot. Reduced dorsiflexion (pointing toes toward head) is commonly associated with ankle sprains, meaning movement of the ankle joint becomes restricted. Inflammation - in the form of swelling and bruising - is essential to help repair the damage.. Therefore, use of anti-inflammatory medication is not recommended in the initial days following injury. Evidence suggests muscle weakness is not associated with ankle sprains but deficits in proprioception, balance and reaction times (Eechaute et al 2009).. Following an ankle injury many people go for an x-ray to ensure there are no fractures present. However, x-rays do not show ligament damage. If your x-ray results are clear but you are in severe pain and are not responding to physiotherapy treatment than an MRI scan may be needed.. ...

Take Breaks. Exercise. Weight/Diet. Take Breaks. To reduce the stress on your spine and its surrounding soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, etc.), it is necessary to regularly take breaks from sitting (at least every twenty to thirty minutes). A simple analogy is to consider an elastic band. If you pull the elastic band apart, it will spring back to its original position. However, over time, repetitive and prolonged stretching of the elastic band will result in the band becoming elongated. A similar scenario occurs to the soft tissue of the spine during sitting/slouching in front of a PC all day. This leads to instability and an increased likelihood of injury.. At Bodymotion, we will be happy to advise you on work related postural issues.. Exercise. Regular exercise also plays an important role in your spinal health and prevention of injury. It is recommended that people take at least 20 minutes of exercise a day to improve cardiovascular fitness. In addition, a simple, well-performed weights ...

Athletic injuries of the hand and wrist continue to increase as athletes get bigger, faster, and the weekend warrior continues to be active throughout his or her lifespan. The management of hand and wrist injuries in these athletes depends on the sport, position, timing during the season the injury occurs, and how many years the athlete has left to play in competition. In the past, these injuries were thought to be trivial; but if not ideally managed, complications can occur which may keep the skilled athlete or the weekend warrior out for a prolonged period of time. This article concentrates on common athletic injuries of the hand and wrist.

Five of the nations top dental associations want to remind young athletes to play it safe by wearing a mouth guard during recreational and organized sports this spring. Research estimates that about 2 percent of all children or adolescents who participate in sports eventually will suffer a facial injury severe enough to require medical attention.
This is common in every sport, among runners, and also in gym workouts. This often happens when youre running and not paying attention to your footing. A misstep can cause your foot to twist beneath you, bending the ankle in an awkward position. The best way to prevent sprains is to run or jog on flat, even surfaces. If youre on the treadmill, dont forget to wear the clip that will stop the machine if you lose your balance. Outdoors, try to stay on concrete when running, as natural trails may be uneven and littered with branches and rocks.. Staying safe is important during any physical activity. To that end, be sure to wear the proper protective equipment and follow safety guidelines for that activity. While getting a good workout is your goal, overdoing it can lead to accidents and injuries that may leave you sidelined.. ...

Included in the analysis were 1723 cases of pediatric sports-related TSI, which represented 3.7% of all pediatric sports-related trauma. The majority of patients with TSI were male (81%), and the median age was 15 years (IQR 13-16 years). TSIs arose most often from cycling accidents (47%) and contact sports (28%). The most frequently fractured regions were the thoracic (30%) and cervical (27%) spine. Among patients with spinal cord involvement (SCI), the cervical spine was involved in 60% of cases.. The average length of stay for TSIs was 2 days (IQR 1-5 days), and 32% of the patients required ICU-level care. Relative to other sports-related trauma, TSIs without SCI were associated with an increased adjusted mean length of stay by 1.8 days (95% CI 1.6-2.0 days), as well as the need for ICU-level care (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.6, 95% CI 1.3-1.9). Also relative to other sports-related trauma, TSIs with SCI had an increased length of stay by 2.1 days (95% CI 1.8-2.6 days) and the need for ...

One of the irritating events in my body took two Oregon Regenerative Medicine doctors and one flash of insight to address, and the teamwork proved most efficacious!. My rambunctiously insomniac left calf, a disturbance identified by my chiropractor as an entrapped fibular nerve, stirringly alive in the daytime, became most troublesome at night with tremulous sensations like myriad tiny creatures humming and streaming beneath my skin, keeping me awake at night with their frenetic activity. Dr. Peterson got to work taming this insurrection with neuroprolo, a technique of light and superficial injections with effects far from superficial. I could already feel significant improvement, and enjoy deeper sleep, after the first session, and returned several times over the next few months for repeat performances till these symptoms abated completely.. In the course of this series, I realized in a sudden Aha! moment while out walking that I was keeping my left big toe from moving through its paces to ...

This systematic review has evaluated the evidence on the relationship between participation in the most common sports in England and OA. Across all studies, the relationship between sports participation and OA was equivocal. The results suggested an increased risk of OA for those who participate at the elite level. This is most notably in soccer and athletes, with the exception of long-distance/middle-distance running, compared with non-elite sports participants (p,0.001). The majority of studies in elite sports demonstrated an association between sports participants and risk of OA. In previous reviews, sporting activities have been associated with hip and knee OA, although elite sporting participation has not been separately studied.5 ,8 ,9 Interestingly, the analyses suggest that the risk of OA may be associated with the type of sport. Indeed, the majority of studies involving soccer demonstrated that there was a positive association with OA, where all the studies involving non-elite soccer ...

Applying Hot Packs. Apply the pack safely on the affected area for about 15-20 minutes. Remember to use an adequate amount of layering between the heat source and your skin to avoid burns. Apply a hot and wet towel, as moist heat is ideal for treating chronic sports-related injuries. You may use special athletic heating pads or packs if you require heat therapy frequently. Avoid leaving hot packs on the injured area for more than 20 minutes or when you are sleeping.. Cold Therapy for Acute Injuries. Ice therapy is the best treatment for young athletes suffering from acute injuries as it helps in alleviating pain, swelling, and discomfort. Doctors recommend ice because it is a good vasoconstrictor, i.e. it causes blood vessels to narrow and controls internal bleeding at the site of injury. Cold therapy is also beneficial for healing chronic pain and overuse injuries in athletes. Young athletes suffering from chronic knee pain that aggravates after a sprint may like to apply an ice pack after the ...

GALVESTON, Texas - Researchers from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston have found that women who take the birth control pill, which lessen and stabilize estrogen levels, were less likely to suffer serious knee injuries. The findings are currently available in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.. Female athletes are 1.5 to 2 times more likely than their male counterparts to injure their anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. The ACL is a ligament that connects the top and bottom portions of the knee. Damage to this ligament is a serious athletic injury that can be career altering. Return-to-play rates after ACL injury are as low as 49 percent among soccer players. Also, this injury may lead to lifelong issues with knee instability, altered walking gait and early onset arthritis.. Using a national insurance claims and prescription database of 23,428 young women between 15 and 19, the study found that women with an ...
Sports injuries are injuries resulting from sports activities. More broadly, these are all injuries sustained during a sporting activity,of which there are many. They include a potential TBI,or traumatic brain injury.. In the narrow sense, they represent injuries to the locomotor system, movement systems (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bones). As in professional as well as in recreational sports, dominant injuries of the locomotor system are dominant, with sports injuries we mean locomotor system injuries.. Sports injuries are divided into acute and chronic.. 1) Acute sports injuries Acute injuries occur as a result of the immediate action of a strong force (movement or contact),which exceeds the compensatory capacity of our body and leads to mechanical damage to the tissue. The soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons) of the locomotor system support your joints and prevent injury. They resist the force exerting on your body to a certain extent, after which soft tissue structure is disturbed ...
Introduction. Injury surveillance data is required to determine injury incidence and prevalence within different sporting codes. This allows injury prevention strategies to be targeted to the specific sports. High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) has developed an injury surveillance system, part of which includes an online app, to monitor injuries within sports but its effectiveness has not yet been determined. Purpose. To determine the injury incidence and prevalence in HPSNZ sports Methods. One hundred and fifteen New Zealand carded athletes across the five sporting disciplines of mens hockey, womens hockey, womens football, kayaking and sailing completed a longitudinal prospective cohort study over twelve months. The sample was made up of 45 males (mean age 24.22 SD. 3.97) and 71 females (mean age 22.96 SD. 4.15) with data collected weekly using the HPSNZ "Programme for Injury and Illness Surveillance" (PILLS) self-reported injury surveillance app. Results. Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States and is the leading cause of sports-related injury. A large focus in recent years has been on concussions, sudden cardiac death, and heat illness, all thought to be largely preventable health issues in the young athlete. Injury prevention through better understanding of injury mechanisms, education, proper equipment, and practice techniques and preseason screening may aid in reducing the number of injuries. Proper management of on-field injuries and health emergencies can reduce the morbidity associated with these injuries and may lead to faster return to play and reduced risk of future injury ...

Context: Recent data on exertional heat illness (EHI) in high school sports are limited yet warranted to identify specific settings with the highest risk of EHI. Objective: To describe the epidemiology of EHI in high school sports during the 2012/2013-2016/2017 academic years. Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Setting: Aggregate injury and exposure data collected from athletic trainers working in high school sports in the United States. Patients or Other Participants: High school athletes during the 2012/2013-2016/2017 academic years. Intervention: High School Reporting Information Online surveillance system data from the 2012/2013-2016/2017 academic years were analyzed. Main Outcome Measures: EHI counts, rates per 10,000 athlete exposures (AEs), and distributions were examined by sport, event type, and US census region. EHI management strategies provided by athletic trainers were analyzed. Injury rate ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) compared EHI rates. Results: Overall, 300 ...
As expected, the data show that the injury definition and data-collection method used play important roles in determining the magnitude of injuries in a technical sport such as beach volleyball. A tentative conclusion based on the "traditional" cohort study approach using a time-loss injury definition would be that the injury risk is very low. In contrast, the data from the survey suggest that pain problems are prevalent, predominantly resulting from overuse injuries in the shoulder, knees and low back.. A key limitation of the injury registration is that this was retrospective, asking the players to recall injuries over an 8-week period. However, although retrospective injuries are prone to recall bias, prospective registration does not always result in more complete data, as shown in a recent study among World Cup skiers and snowboarders.11 In fact, the FIVB Volleyball Injury Study I from 2001 showed that retrospective injury recall and prospective registration by tournament medical staff ...
