Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient human disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is an airborne pathogen and is extremely contagious. TB mainly affects the lungs, making pulmonary disease, the most common presentation. However, TB is a multi-systemic disease with a variable presentation. The organ system most commonly affected includes the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal (GI) system, the lymphoreticular system, the skin, the central nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, the reproductive system, and the liver.[1]
Oxidative Status Pathways: Systemic Biomarkers. By Peter Zolotukhin, Viktor Chmykhalo, Anna Belanova, Alexander Dybushkin, Viktor Fedoseev and Dmitriy Smirnov. Systemic biomarkers (i.e. biomarkers of functioning of cellular pathways) offer a broad spectrum of diagnostic capabilities. There are several approaches to using systemic biomarkers that derive from exact needs of a researcher or a clinical specialist. First, analyzing a multifunctional and multi-systemic pathway in circulating cells (e.g. leukocytes) allows to gather generalized information on functioning of the organism. Second, there are numerous pathways that, even still in circulating cells, allow to assess risks of developing or stage of development of numerous diseases, including the leaders of non-infection diseases mortality-cardiovascular diseases. Third, biopsy specimens can readily be used to assess the exact signaling type of a disease (especially cancer) thus helping in selecting the best treatment option. Due to unique ...

Sarcoidosis is an autoimmune multi-systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. The hallmark of this disease is the presence of non-caseating granulomasthat look like grains of sand affecting multiple organs. The presence of manygranulomas then affects the normal functioning of the organs in which they are present. It can affect almost all organs of the body, but more often it affects the lungs, mesotheliomaadrenal glands, lymph nodes, eyes and skin.

Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) infects nearly 500 million persons globally, with an estimated 21 million incident cases each year, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). HSV-2 is associated with increased human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) acquisition, and this risk does not decline with the use of antiherpes drugs. As initial acquisition of both HIV and HSV-2 infections is subclinical, study... ...

The majority of MS participants were characterized as relapsing/remitting (76.8%) and were taking disease modifying therapies (72.6%) at the time of collection. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were detected in 3.5% of people with MS residing in MA and 6.3% of their cohabitants (X2=1.54, p=0.22). For comparison, ~1.5% of the MA population had tested positive by PCR in this date range. Exposure and treatment data will be presented in 13 cases of antibody discordance between the person with MS and his/her cohabitant; the person with MS was antibody-negative in 10 cases and antibody-positive in 3 cases with discordance. In total there were 6 MS participants and no cohabitants who previously tested positive by nasal swab PCR but lacked antibodies at follow-up. Of the COVID-positive participants (by PCR or antibody), 54.5% (6 of 11) of MS and 88.9% (8 of 9) of cohabitants were asymptomatic (p=0.16). ...
may lead to symptomatic upper urinary tract infection called pyelonephritis, which may result in a complicated pregnancy. Asymptomatic bacteriuria, most of the times, enters into urinary tract during sexual intercourse or wiping after bowel movement. Since asymptomatic bacteriuria goes undetected, it is crucial to know the causes that increase a persons risk of infection with asymptomatic bacteriuria. Early detection and treatment can help avoid the consequences of untreated asymptomatic bacteriuria.. Some of the risk factors associated with asymptomatic bacteriuria infection in the asymptomatic bacteriuria treatment market includes sickle cell disease, diabetes, immunosuppressive disorders, urinary tract obstructions, loss of bladder control and need for chronic instrumentation of the bladder. If a person encounters any of these risk factors, he or she must consult a doctor immediately. In case of non-pregnant women, asymptomatic bacteriuria rarely causes any serious disorder. Standard ...

Overview. Clinical dogma is that healthy urine is sterile and the presence of bacteria with an inflammatory response is indicative of urinary tract infection (UTI). Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) represents the state in which bacteria are present but the inflammatory response is negligible. Differentiating ABU from UTI is diagnostically challenging, but critical because overtreatment of ABU can perpetuate antimicrobial resistance while undertreatment of UTI can result in increased morbidity and mortality. We studied key characteristics of the healthy and ABU urine microbiomes utilizing 16S rRNA sequencing and metaproteomics, with the future goal of utilizing this information to personalize the treatment of UTI by more accurately differentiating ABU from UTI. A cross-sectional study of 26 healthy controls and 27 healthy subjects at risk for ABU due to spinal cord injury-related neuropathic bladder (NB) was conducted. Of the 27 subjects with NB, 8 voided normally, 8 utilized intermittent ...
Chondrodysplasia in the most general sense is sometimes called a syndrome, other times part of a syndrome, the definition of that word being a collection of interconnected symptoms. Some dogs may have many, some a few, and others no readily observable symptoms. The clinical signs may be very mild, from almost undetectable bowing or shortening of the legs, to obvious skeletal deformity and the presence of several health problems. Chondrodysplasia Punctata is one name applied to a syndrome of multi-systemic disorders, and is so-called because of the dots of calcium phosphate deposits in the softer cartilage. It reminds me of the school of art made popular by Georges Seurat called Pointillism. This genetic-metabolic problem has various skeletal expressions. Depending on the particular variety, the mode of inheritance could be autosomal recessive or dominant, or X-chromosome-linked recessive or dominant, some with full penetrance, and some not.. Besides skeletal indications, there are eye ...
We will study the antidepressant action of R. rosea in patients with MDD. Depression affects more than a billion people world wide, and is now recognized as one of the most disabling medical conditions. It accounts for more than 11% of the total disease burden worldwide, and can result in devastating consequences and functional impairment exceeded only by that of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It results in substantial social, occupational, and personal disability and in increased medical co-morbidity and death by suicide. It is considered to be a multi-systemic disorder characterized by neurotransmitter, neuroendocrine, immunologic, and autonomic, and infectious disturbances. Although the development of antidepressant drug therapy has simplified the treatment of MDD, a substantial segment of the worlds population remains untreated for economic, cultural, or personal reasons. As a result, many individuals seek CAM for relief of their symptoms. The identification of effective CAM therapies ...

Id imagine an extinction level super plague would need to have some nearly perfect balance between its deadliness and communicability. I dont know much about Ebola, but to me, it seems like what others have said: Too deadly, so it burns through its victims faster than they can spread it, which makes me wonder how it hasnt gone extinct. In this case, a less deadly strain would be a beneficial evolutionary adaptation for the pathogen.. If I were a mad microbiologist out to show all those fools who mocked my genius, Id probably make or modify a disease that starts with flu-like symptoms that arent too bad at first, so people would be able to go about their day with only mild discomfort and spread the disease before it gets into the really deadly stuff.. Would probably be even better if it had a largely asymptomatic phase, though as a layman who doesnt know the details of an infections life cycle, I wonder if thatd tempt natural selection to favor an asymptomatic infection. If the virus ...

This disorder leads to a multi-systemic disease of the cardiovascular system, CNS, muscles, and connective tissue. Homocystinuria represents a group of hereditary metabolic disorders characterized by the accumulation of homocysteine in serum and elevated excretion of homocysteine in urine.
Plasmodium infection among children is a serious public health problem. Asymptomatic malaria infection among humans serves as a significant reservoir for transmitting Plasmodium to uninfected Anopheles mosquitoes, fueling malaria endemicity and asymptomatic malaria may progress to clinical malaria. Therefore, prompt and accurate diagnosis of malaria infection is crucial for the management and control of malaria, especially in endemic areas. This study assessed the point prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infection and evaluated the performance of malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT), light microscopy and nested PCR (nPCR) for the diagnosis of asymptomatic malaria infection in a paediatric population in the Atwima Nwabiagya North district, Ghana.. ...
The recent development of rapid and accurate tests for the detection of malaria is highly commendable. One of the major goals of developing such rapid tests was that these rapid tests should be handled with ease and accurately by relatively unskilled staff for prompt diagnosis of malaria especially in areas where microscopy may not be available or available and pose problems because of its limitations [5, 6] especially in some parts of the endemic areas where there is no electricity.. The strength of the present study is that it was performed in a population that was primarily asymptomatic in the hyperendemic Mt Cameroon region using microscopy as gold standard. Although asymptomatic malaria may be beneficial in inducing and sustaining partial immunity against malaria, it may give rise to severe disease complicated by coma, acidosis or severe anaemia [21]. Thus to better manage the disease, it is worthwhile to screen both sick and healthy people and treat them promptly. From a malaria ...
Ecuador has experienced ~99% reduction in malaria clinical cases in the last 15 years and is now pointing towards an elimination phase. Despite periodic focal outbreaks, the country has shown a malaria transmission decreasing trend. In 2014, Ecuador reported the lowest malaria incidence of the last decade but in 2016 the reported incidence (917 cases), almost doubled that of the previous year. The study indicated the presence of a significant number of asymptomatic malaria parasite carriers in the study sites, with parasitaemia detectable only by qPCR which is probably an indication of an official under reporting of cases.. The periodic outbreaks, particularly the most recent one, appear to depend on several features. First, as most countries do, the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) of Ecuador uses microscopy and more recently RDT for malaria diagnosis. Although these two methods have great value for passive case detection of symptomatic cases, they show very limited sensitivity to ...
While affected individuals are predominantly heterozygous females, males show early lethality. About 50 percent of affected females inherit the gene mutation from their mother and at least 50 percent have a de novo mutation. For women with X-linked PVNH, the risk of passing the mutation to each child is 50 percent. Because of the high rate of prenatal lethality in males, most sons born to women with X-linked PVNH are unaffected. Prenatal diagnosis by molecular genetic testing is possible if the disease-causing mutation has been identified in an affected relative. The periventricular nodules can be visualized by ultrasound examination as early as 24 weeks of gestation, but the sensitivity of this finding is unknown.. To serve as a comprehensive cardiovascular resource for PVNH patients who also frequently have multi-systemic disease, Chen recently founded and become the director of the cardiology clinic for the BrDG program, called C-BrDG (pronounced C-Bridge).. C-BrDG recently began accepting ...
DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a multi-systemic, recessively inherited disorder that affects between 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 100,000 individuals worldwide. It is characterized primarily by early onset cerebellar ataxia andtelangiectasia, from which the disease name is derived. In addition, patients also exhibit a number of other clinical symptoms including increased susceptibility to cancer (lymphomas, leukemia, brain tumors), immunodeficiency, insulin-resistant diabetes, chromosomal instability, sensitivity to ionizing radiation, susceptibility to bronchopulmonary disease, and the absence, or almost complete absence, of a thymus. Current treatments for A-T are directed toward the management of symptoms. Physical and speechtherapy can improve the lives of patients, and -globulin injections can be given to support the immune system. However, no treatment is directed at the underlying defect. Consequently, A-T remains a fatal disease. The development of improved ...
BACKGROUND: Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is an incurable multi-systemic autoimmune disease. Interferon type I (IFN-I) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of SLE. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of the IFN-I signature and the contribution of cytosolic nucleic acid receptors to IFN-I activation in a cohort of primarily white cSLE patients. METHODS: The IFN-I score (positive or negative), as a measure of IFN-I activation, was assessed using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) expression values of IFN-I signature genes (IFI44, IFI44L, IFIT1, Ly6e, MxA, IFITM1) in CD14+ monocytes of cSLE patients and healthy controls (HCs ...
Psoriasis is a multi-systemic chronic inflammatory disease that affects about 1.5-3% of the general population, of which almost 20% suffer from a moderate-severe form. Those patients can be treated with a systemic agent, and, in case of scarce response or contraindications, they may require a biologic therapy, such as tumor necrosis factor or interleukin-12/23 inhibitors. When also those agents fail, clinicians face a true therapeutic challenge. We report a case series of multi-failure 16 patients, successfully treated with secukinumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody that selectively neutralizes interleukin-17A, recently approved for the treatment of plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis ...
I have lived with pain for as long as I can remember, its now chronic, its never going away.. I have Charcot Marie Tooth disease, a neuromuscular disease that affects the motor and sensory nerves to my arms and legs, you can think of it as having wonky wiring. I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder meaning in simple terms that the glue that holds my body together is too stretchy, like chewing gum. One condition is progressive the other multi-systemic meaning chronic pain and fatigue are common features in both of these conditions.. For generations pain is something that I have tried not to think about, to put to the back of my mind, to push through. I had always been a high achiever, setting myself goals and working hard through school, university then in the world of work, there wasnt time to bother with the pain and the limitations it placed on me.. As the years rolled by my ability to keep up this fight began to slip away, I was having more periods of chronic ...
Currently there is no vaccine against visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Towards developing an effective vaccine, we have reported extensively on the immunogenicity of live attenuated LdCentrin-/- mutants in naive animal models. In VL endemic areas, asymptomatic carriers outnumber symptomatic cases of VL and are considered to be a reservoir of infection. Vaccination of asymptomatic cases represents a viable strategy to eliminate VL. Immunological correlates of protection thus derived might have limited applicability in conditions where the immunized host has prior exposure to virulent infection. To examine whether LdCen-/- parasites can induce protective immunity in experimental hosts that have low-level parasitemia from a previous exposure mimicking an asymptomatic condition, we infected C57Bl/6 mice with wild type Leishmania donovani parasites expressing LLO epitope (LdWTLLO 103, i.v.). After 3 weeks the mice with low levels of parasitemia were immunized with LdCen-/- parasites expressing 2W epitope (LdCen-
This study features several methodological strengths. The model simulates clinical events and use of health services in a temporally explicit fashion that incorporates the changing effects of each individuals age, infection history, and vaccination history on infection risk and response to infection. Vaccine efficacy is adjusted to account for distributions of strains specific to India. Monthly probabilities of infection are based on hazard rates calculated from a meticulously executed birth cohort study, which captured even asymptomatic infections. Use of such complete epidemiological data in a model of rotavirus infection is important given the role of asymptomatic infections in reducing risk and severity of future infections. In addition, the study benefited from the availability of recent cost data.47. We found no previously published analyses that examined the impact of rotavirus vaccination specifically in India. A study by Podewils et al published in 2005 examined the cost effectiveness ...
We investigated the presence of the measles virus genome in order to identify asymptomatic infections in the adult population. Bone-marrow aspirates were obtained from 179 patients, 20-96 years of age, for the diagnosis of malignant diseases (29 with malignant lymphoma, 28 with acute leukaemia, 21 with myelodysplastic syndrome, five with multiple myeloma and 96 with other diseases). The measles virus genome was detected in 17 (9·5%) of 179 individuals by RT-PCR and 28 (15·6%) through hybridization. The genomes detected in bone marrow were all in the same cluster, D5, the strain circulating during the study period, and no evidence of persistent infection was obtained. We conclude that asymptomatic infections of measles virus are common in adults and the presence of the measles virus genome would not be related to the pathogenesis of illness.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a serious public health problem in Europe, and it is estimated that a large number of people are unaware of their infection [1-3]. HCV infection may lead to symptomatic chronic liver disease after many years of asymptomatic infection. Effective treatment is available for HCV infection; however, the efficacy for many genotypes remains low and therapy is prolonged, involving both weekly injections and daily oral medication, and can be associated with significant adverse effects [4,5]. Where documented, injecting drug use is a major transmission route for HCV infections [1,6,7]. In many European countries, national surveillance of HCV infections has been established relatively recently.
Manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infections may range from asymptomatic infections or mild symptoms to severe courses of disease with a high risk of fatal outcome (2). In this study, we show that SARS-CoV-2-specific immunological characteristics in patients with a severe course are clearly distinct from infected individuals who recovered from mild disease that could be managed in an outpatient setting. Both groups were analyzed at the same time after onset of COVID-19 symptoms. As main findings, we show that patients with severe disease had high levels of SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells as well as high titers of specific IgG and IgA antibodies as compared with convalescent individuals, where levels were significantly lower. However, SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells in severe cases had a restricted cytokine expression profile with fewer multifunctional cells and strongly expressed CTLA-4 as a hallmark of T cells in the contraction phase of an immune response after active encounter with the virus. ...
