The primary fields of research include human research, space medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, astronomy and meteorology. Most of these have been related to cardiovascular disease, but it is not clear whether this was due to pre-existing conditions or effects of space flight. It is hoped that advanced screening for coronary disease has greatly mitigated this risk. Other heart rhythm problems, such as atrial fibrillation, can develop over time, necessitating periodic screening of crewmembers heart rhythms. Purpose : The Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) is characterized by the development of optic disc edema, chorioretinal folds, globe flattening, and/or hyperopic shifts in astronauts during 6-month missions on the International Space Station (ISS). We hypothesize that a weightlessness-induced chronic headward fluid shift within the venous system contributes to these ocular changes. Methods : Astronauts (n=10) were studied before flight (seated and supine posture) and ∼150 days into a 6-month mission on the ISS. Ocular and vascular measures included optical coherence tomography (OCT; Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering) assessments of sub-macular choroid thickness and peripapillary total retinal thickness (TRT; segmented from Bruchs membrane to the internal limiting membrane); ultrasound-derived internal jugular vein (IJV) cross-sectional area (GE VividQ) and non-invasive IJV pressure (Veinpress); and intraocular pressure (IOP; iCare pro pre-flight and TonoPen in-flight).

Near-Earth asteroid 2011 MD will pass only 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) above the Earths surface on Monday June 27 at about 9:30 EDT. The asteroid was discovered by the LINEAR near-Earth object discovery team observing from Socorro, New Mexico. This small asteroid, only 5-20 meters in diameter, is in a very Earth-like orbit about the Sun, but an orbital analysis indicates there is no chance it will actually strike Earth on Monday. If a rocky asteroid the size of 2011 MD were to enter Earths atmosphere, it would be expected to burn up high in the atmosphere and cause no damage to Earths surface. The accompanying diagram gives a view of the asteroids trajectory from the general direction of the Sun. This view indicates that 2011 MD will reach its closest Earth approach point in extreme southern latitudes (in fact over the southern Atlantic Ocean). Parameters from 131 inflight vectorcardiograms were analyzed and compared to pre-flight and post-flight values. Maximum QRS vector magnitude showed a statistically significant increase in six of the nine Skylab astronauts. The magnitude of the spatial T vector increased in five crewmen. There was no consistent changes in QRS, T, or ST vector direction during the flights. The PR interval measured at rest increased in six astronauts, but the average PR interval for each inflight test did not exceed the upper limit of normal in any crewman. NASA is trying to sniff out which employee brought a baggy of cocaine into the hangar that houses Space Shuttle Discovery at Kennedy Space Center in Florida this week. The space agency is preparing the shuttle for a launch to the International Space Station in March.. Spaceport officials said an employee found the bag Thursday morning outside a bathroom in the restricted shuttle hangar, Orbiter Processing Facility No. 3. The employee notified security, which conducted tests confirming that a small amount of cocaine remained in the bag.. Because access to the hangar requires a security badge, officials know about 200 NASA workers and contractors were around the facility at the time the drug was found.
