Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a plant that grows in the Andean highlands of South America. Recent studies have shown that yacon is effective in improving antioxidant activity. In this study, the effects of different forms of yacon extracts (20% yacon water extract, 20% yacon juice, and 20% yacon extract) on the lipid oxidation and color of emulsion-type sausage were evaluated. Significant decrease in pH and residual nitrite (RN) values were observed as well as increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in all treatments over time. However, during the 30 days of storage, no differences were seen in pH values in any treatment. For color, differences in L*, a*, and b* due to each yacon extract were small, except at 0 days of storage. In conclusion, the addition of 20% yacon extract to emulsion-type sausages was most effective in improving lipid oxidative stability, which could lower pH.   Key words: Yacon water extract, yacon juice, yacon extract, lipid oxidation, color
The exact role of ethylene in xylogenesis remains unclear, but the Zinnia elegans cell culture system provides an excellent model with which to study its role during the differentiation of tracheary elements (TEs) in vitro. • Here, we analysed ethylene homeostasis and function during Z. elegans TE differentiation using biochemical, molecular and pharmacological methods. • Ethylene evolution was confined to specific stages of TE differentiation. It was found to peak at the time of TE maturation and to correlate with the activity of the ethylene biosynthetic 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase. The ethylene precursor ACC was exported and accumulated to high concentrations in the extracellular medium, which also displayed a high capacity to convert ACC into ethylene. The effects of adding inhibitors of the ethylene biosynthetic ACC synthase and ACC oxidase enzymes to the TE cultures demonstrated for the first time strict dependence of TE differentiation on ethylene biosynthesis ...
Ligularia dentata (summer ragwort or leopardplant) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Ligularia and the family Asteraceae, native to China and Japan. It is a robust herbaceous perennial growing to 1-1.5 m (3-5 ft) tall by 1 m (3 ft) wide. The dark green leaves are large, long-stalked, leathery, cordate-based, and very rounded, with serrated edges (hence the Latin dentata meaning "toothed") . Orange-yellow daisy-like composite flowers bloom on thick red, mostly leafless stalks, rising above the foliage in early summer. Ligularia dentata is grown as an ornamental plant, chosen as much for its bold foliage as its flowers. It is used as a round-leaved accent plant or massed planting in moist sun and partial shade garden settings, and in containers. Cultivars include Desdemona and Othello. Selections with cream colour spotted foliage (polka dots) are also grown. Ligularia dentata contains tumorigenic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Ainaxiang (Blumea balsamifera), also known as Sambong, is an important ancient medicinal herb in Southeast Asia. It is rich in volatile oil, and still widely used nowadays for skin wound healing and treatment of sore throats. We analyzed the volatile oil from Blumea balsamifera (BB oil) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Forty one components, including l-borneol, were identified. Next, the damaging effects of BB oil diluted with olive oil on liver at different concentrations (100%, 50%, 20%), were evaluated, using both normal and wounded skin. Plasma ALT, AST, ALP and TBili were assessed, along with liver histopathology. The results showed that serum levels of liver toxicity markers in the high concentration groups (100% w/v) increased compared with control groups, whereas no significant changes was observed in histopathology of liver samples. In the wound groups, treatment with BB oil resulted in a decrease in serum toxicity index, compared with normal animal groups. This study confirms

Parthenium argentatum, commonly known as the guayule (/ɡwaɪˈuːliː/ or /waɪˈuːleɪ/, as in Spanish), is a flowering shrub in the aster family, Asteraceae, that is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It was originally discovered by J.M. Bigelow in 1852 and was first described by Asa Gray. It can be found in the US states of New Mexico and Texas and the Mexican states of Zacatecas, Coahuila, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. The plant can be used as an alternate source of latex that is also hypoallergenic, unlike the normal Hevea rubber. In pre-Columbian times, the guayule was a secondary source of latex for rubber, the principal source being the Castilla elastica tree. The name "guayule" derives from the Nahuatl word ulli/olli, "rubber". For sustainable production, guayule grows well in arid and semi arid areas of the southwestern United States, North Central Mexico and regions with similar climates around the world. Because the guayule ...

Leaves opposite, simple; petiole 2-6.5 cm long; blade broadly ovate to deltate, 5-11 cm × 4-8 cm, base truncate to shortly attenuate, apex acute to shortly acuminate, margin dentate. Inflorescence a discoid head up to 2.5 cm × 1.5 cm; involucral bracts 15-18, 3-seriate, up to 8 mm × 1 mm, apex acute; receptacular bracts straw-coloured, often tinged purple-red, up to 6 mm × 1 mm. Disk flowers 400-620, corolla 5-merous, yellow, up to 3.5 mm long. Fruit an achene 2-2.5 mm × 1 mm; pappus consisting of 2 bristles. Acmella is a pantropical genus of about 30 species, with 2 of these native to tropical Africa, and 2 introduced. Most Acmella species were formerly considered to belong to the genus Spilanthes. The 2 native species, Acmella caulirhiza Delile (synonym: Spilanthes mauritianus auct. non (Rich.) DC.) and Acmella uliginosa (Sw.) Cass., have similar uses as Acmella oleracea and have undoubtedly been mixed up in the literature. Acmella ...

Medicinal plants and their bioactive fractions have significant roles in various disorders. These fractions have been shown to improve the learning behaviors and memories of experimental animals [16]. For determination of disorders of the central nervous system in experimental animals, a passive avoidance task (fear-aggravated test) is used for evaluation of learning and memory. In the present study, on the 5th day, rats were placed in a dark chamber to evaluate their vision and neuronal activity. The results of the present study revealed that the values of STL differed significantly, whereas no change was found in IL values. Similar findings were reported by Ellman et al.[15] in their study on Vaccinium ashei supplementation in mice. Our results suggested that administration of Launaea procumbens significantly improved memory and learning in experimental animals when using passive avoidance tests. Similar results have been reported in other experimental animals [16]. The data of the present ...

Published on the web: April 12, 2005. Abstract. Tagitinin A (2), a known 3,10-epoxy-germacrolide-6,7-trans-lactone isolated from Tithonia diversifolia, was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It was found to have a 1β,4α,6α,7β,8β relative configuration which differed at C(1) from the 1α-orientation originally reported in the literature which was determined by Horeaus Rule. Analysis of the 1H NMR spectrum of 2 shows the molecule to maintain its crystallographically observed twist-chair-boat (TCB) nine-membered ring conformation in acetone-d6 solution. The twist-chair-boat/skew-chair-boat type 3 conformations of saturated/unsaturated nine-membered rings within 3,10-epoxy-germacrolides can be interconverted to the skew-chair-chair (SCC) conformation by means of a C(9) ring atom flip mechanism. As a result of this conformational change, the orientation of the C(1) atom and the C(8)-oxycarbonyl moiety are transformed from diequatorial to diaxial. The reported ...

All these findings may be correlated with factors other than genetic determination, such as biotic pressures which could modulate the volatiles of cluster I (scented samples) from cluster II (scentless samples) or the geographical variations observed in subclusters IA/IB. Leaf volatiles may provide a constitutive defence by deterring potential herbivores.16 Monoterpenes, rich in subcluster IB, have been demonstrated to act as toxins by feeding deterrents or oviposition deterrents to a large variety of insects.17 It has been shown in other plant species that leaf monoterpenes also attract predators of herbivores.18 On the other hand, α-bisabolol that has been found in high amounts in subcluster IA has been a specifically-located toxin in trees grazed by snowshoe hare,19 although some of the sesquiterpenes found in scentless samples, such as caryophyllene oxide, have also been shown to inhibit pathogens and herbivore attack.20 As stated by Levin et al.,21 variation in volatiles may also reflect ...
Yacón, or ground apple (Smallanthus sonchifolius), is a perennial plant grown in the northern and central Andes from Colombia to northern Argentina for its crisp, sweet, and tuberous roots. In 2012, yacóns cultivated in the research field of the Gyeongsangnam-do Agriculture and Extension Services, Jinju, South Korea, suddenly died. The characteristic symptoms consisted of rotting, wilting, and blighting. Initial symptoms included water-soaked lesions on lower stem tissue near the soil line. Infected plants gradually withered, and white mycelial mats and sclerotia appeared on the surface of roots and stems at the soil line. The sclerotia were collected and disinfested by immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite solution for 30 s and in sterilized distilled water for 1 min. Then, the sclerotia were placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 30°C. Numerous globoid sclerotia were formed on PDA after 18 days of growth. The sclerotia (1 to 3 mm in diameter) were white at first and then ...

The daisy is a cheerful-looking flower thats been a mainstay in gardens and fields for hundreds of years. The origin of the word "daisy" lies in the Anglo-Saxon "daes eage," meaning "days eye," because the daisy blossom opens to greet each new day at the rising of the sun. The daisy petals are arranged with central disk florets surrounded by ray florets in an inflorescence known as a capitulum. Ten percent of all flowering plants on earth are types of daisy. All daisies belong to the Asteraceae family of flowering plants ...

Gynura procumbens, a medicinal plant locally known as Sambung nyawa, is widely used traditionally in South East Asia as a remedy to alleviate symptoms of various ailments including diabetes mellitus. Previous investigators reported that the ethanol plant extract was hypoglycemic in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and suggested the blood glucose-reducing effect could be due to G. procumbens mimicking insulin effects. Our present study aimed to reevaluate the hypoglycemic effect(s) of G. procumbens and to ascertain the involvement of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK3), a key component of insulin biosignaling in the plant activity. A cell-based assay showed that the three G. procumbens fractions tested did not exhibit anti-GSK3 activities. Oral administrations of hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol fractions of G. procumbens (250 mg/kg b.w.) and Glibenclamide (5 mg/kg b.w.) for 14 days in STZ-induced diabetic rats reduced blood glucose levels by 29.7%, 60.1%, 33.5% and 61.7% (p,0.05), ...

Background: In plants, the 5 S rRNA genes usually occur as separate tandems (S-type arrangement) or, less commonly, linked to 35 S rDNA units (L-type). The activity of linked genes remains unknown so far. We studied the homogeneity and expression of 5 S genes in several species from family Asteraceae known to contain linked 35 S-5 S units. Additionally, their methylation status was determined using bisulfite sequencing. Fluorescence in situ hybridization was applied to reveal the sub-nuclear positions of rDNA arrays. Results: We found that homogenization of L-type units went to completion in most (4/6) but not all species. Two species contained major L-type and minor S-type units (termed L-s-type). The linked genes dominate 5 S rDNA expression while the separate tandems do not seem to be expressed. Members of tribe Anthemideae evolved functional variants of the polymerase III promoter in which a residing C-box element differs from the canonical angiosperm motif by as much as 30%. On this basis, ...
The disparity between rates of morphological and molecular evolution remains a key paradox in evolutionary genetics. A proposed resolution to this paradox has been the conjecture that morphological evolution proceeds via diversification in regulatory loci, and that phenotypic evolution may correlate better with regulatory gene divergence. This conjecture can be tested by examining rates of regulatory gene evolution in species that display rapid morphological diversification within adaptive radiations. We have isolated homologues to the Arabidopsis APETALA3 (ASAP3/TM6) and APETALA1 (ASAP1) floral regulatory genes and the CHLOROPHYLL A/B BINDING PROTEIN9 (ASCAB9) photosynthetic structural gene from species in the Hawaiian silversword alliance, a premier example of plant adaptive radiation. We have compared rates of regulatory and structural gene evolution in the Hawaiian species to those in related species of North American tarweeds. Molecular evolutionary analyses indicate significant increases ...
Endometrial cancer is a common malignancy of the female genital tract. This study demonstrates that Siegesbeckia orientalis ethanol extract (SOE) significantly inhibited the proliferation of RL95-2 human endometrial cancer cells. Treating RL95-2 cells with SOE caused cell arrest in the G2/M phase and induced apoptosis of RL95-2 cells by up-regulating Bad, Bak and Bax protein expression and down-regulation of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL protein expression. Treatment with SOE increased protein expression of caspase-3, -8 and -9 dose-dependently, indicating that apoptosis was through the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways. Moreover, SOE was also effective against A549 (lung cancer), Hep G2 (hepatoma), FaDu (pharynx squamous cancer), MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer), and especially on LNCaP (prostate cancer) cell lines.
