Understanding causal structure is a central task of human cognition. Causal learning underpins the development of our concepts and categories, our intuitive theories, and our capacities for planning, imagination and inference.
A plurality of devices for processing IF-THEN JOIN operation of IF-THEN rules are provided to process the JOIN operation in a pipe-line manner. A JOIN operation processing facility has an input buffer for latching status data corresponding to one condition in a certain rule; an associative memory for latching status data corresponding to another condition; an output buffer for latching the result of a JOIN operation; and a data combining arrangement for replacing an item value from the two data by a meaningful value to generate one data so that a series of operations of picking up the data one by one from the input buffer, retrieving associatively the data of the associative memory by using the data picked up as a retrieval data and the common item as a retrieval key, and storing in the output buffer the combined result of the data picked up and the retrieval data.
Categorization relies upon the vocabulary of features that comprise the target objects. Previous theoretical work (Schyns, Goldstone, & Thibaut, 1998) has argued this vocabulary may change through learning and experience. Goldstone (2000) demonstrated this perceptual learning during a categorization task when new features are added that create a single feature unit from multiple existing units. We present two experiments that expand on that work using whole-part judgments (Palmer, 1978) to elicit the feature representation learned through categorization. The implications for different classes of computational models of categorization are discussed.. Download PDF version of this paper. ...
Research, theory, and modeling of causal reasoning typically focus on the causal predictions and interventions that result from causal understandings. This neglects the role of explanations in causal reasoning and their role in causal learning. This chapter argues that explanations play a central role in human causal reasoning and that this is true from very early in life. It supports and elaborates this argument by showing that explanations are important to even young children, as apparent in their being frequently sought and provided by them; that explanations are sometimes strikingly easier to provide than comparable predictions, making them a powerful platform for learning; and that engaging in explanatory reasoning aids childrens and adults learning. Causal explanatory reasoning deserves a central role in our understanding of the nature and development of human causal understanding.

Thank you to all ASCRS and ASOA members who contacted their members of Congress in support of our advocacy on this issue. Your efforts made a difference!. Potentially Misvalued Codes. In the proposed rule CMS estimated the potentially misvalued codes targeted for revaluation in this proposed rule would satisfy the target required by statute, and thus would not trigger across-the-board cuts to all codes. However, in the final rule, CMS determined the misvalued code target for 2017 of 0.5% would not be met, and would only be 0.32%, resulting in an -0.18% adjustment to the conversion factor.. Focus on Improving the Value of Primary Care Services. In the final rule, CMS places a significant focus on improving the value of primary care services. CMS will increase reimbursement for certain codes and make separate payments for new codes for primary care services. In addition, CMS finalized several proposals related to chronic care management. ASCRS is concerned the final rule continues to prioritize ...

Another field of research, learning and memory, helps shed light on the conservation of gene function in behaviours across divergent species. The many types of learning and memory will not be discussed here nor will their relevance for the species life histories. There are many paradigms for testing learning and memory, both non-associative and associative, that are informative for interspecific comparisons. One non-associative paradigm is habituation distinguished by decreases in a response to a stimulus following repeated stimulation. Another is sensitization, an increase in response to a neutral stimulus following exposure to a stronger stimulus. Habituation and sensitization are observed in species as diverse as C. elegans [55], D. melanogaster [56], Rattus norvegicus [57] and humans [58]. Associative learning has also been observed in many species [59,60].. Associative learning paradigms can be separated into two categories: (i) operant and (ii) classical (Pavlovian) conditioning [60]. In ...
Background Social-environmental influences can affect animal cognition and health. Also, human socio-economic status is a covariate factor connecting psychometric test-performance (a measure of cognitive ability), educational achievement, lifetime health, and survival. The complimentary hypothesis, that mechanisms in physiology can explain some covariance between the same traits, is disputed. Possible mechanisms involve metabolic biology affecting integrity and stability of physiological systems during development and ageing. Knowledge of these relationships is incomplete, and underlying processes are challenging to reveal in people. Model animals, however, can provide insights into connections between metabolic biology and physiological stability that may aid efforts to reduce human health and longevity disparities. Results We document a positive correlation between a measure of associative learning performance and the metabolic stress resilience of honeybees. This relationship is independent of
Downloadable (with restrictions)! Information is often embedded in memorable contexts, which may cue the asymmetric recall of similar past news through associative memory. We design a theory-driven experiment, in which participants observe signals about hypothetical companies. Here, identical signal realizations are communicated with identical contexts: stories and images. Because participants asymmetrically remember those past signals that get cued by the current context, beliefs systematically overreact. This overreaction depends in predictable ways on the signal history; the correlation between signals and contexts; and the scope for forgetting and associative memory. We quantify these results by structurally estimating a model of associative recall.
We question whether homeostasis alone adequately explains microbial responses to environmental stimuli, and explore the capacity of intra-cellular networks for predictive behavior in a fashion similar to metazoan nervous systems. We show that in silico biochemical networks, evolving randomly under precisely defined complex habitats, capture the dynamical, multidimensional structure of diverse environments by forming internal models that allow prediction of environmental change. We provide evidence for such anticipatory behavior by revealing striking correlations of Escherichia coli transcriptional responses to temperature and oxygen perturbations-precisely mirroring the co-variation of these parameters upon transitions between the outside world and the mammalian gastrointestinal-tract. We further show that these internal correlations reflect a true associative learning paradigm, since they show rapid decoupling upon exposure to novel environments. ...
The performances of 12 patients with Parkinsons disease (PD), 16 with Huntingtons disease (HD), and young and old healthy controls were assessed on a number of tests of verbal and nonverbal declarative memory, on a test of nonmotor conditional associative learning (words and colors), and on a number of reaction time (RT) tasks. The RT tasks consisted of cued simple and choice reactions. The relationship between the precue and the imperative stimulus in the S1-S2 paradigm was nonarbitrary in the first series and arbitrary in the second series. The series with arbitrary S1-S2 associations was repeated across two successive blocks of trials. The rationale of the study was to investigate the function of the basal ganglia "complex loop," and it was postulated that HD patients would show greater deficits because of greater involvement of the caudate nucleus. The patients with HD had the slowest RTs. Across the two blocks with arbitrary S1-S2 associations, the patients with HD but not PD nevertheless ...

Using a standard counterexample to probabilistic theories of causation as an illustration, this chapter argues that there are a number of questions which one might ask about a putative causal relationship: Is it causal at all? What is the direction of the relationship? What is its strength? How does the cause compare with various alternatives? How stable is it under changes in background conditions? What are the pathways responsible for it? Many approaches in philosophy and psychology run these questions together. Together, the answers to these questions can provide a taxonomy of different kinds of causal relationships. By keeping these questions separately, we are able to clarify both philosophical applications of causation, and psychological claims about causal learning.

We examine the impact of renminbi revaluation on foreign firm valuations, considering two surprise announcements of changes in Chinas exchange rate policy in 2005 and 2010 and employing data on some 6,000 firms in 44 economies. Stock returns rise with renminbi revaluation expectations. This reaction appears to reflect a combination of improvements in general market sentiment and specific trade effects. Expected renminbi appreciation has a positive effect on firms exporting to China but a negative impact on those providing inputs for the countrys processing exports. Stock prices rise for firms competing with China in their home market but fall for firms importing Chinese products with large imported-input content. There is also some evidence that expected renminbi appreciation reduces the valuation of financially-constrained firms, presumably because appreciation implies reduced Chinese purchases of foreign securities. The results carry over when we consider ten instances of market-perceived changes in

Associative learning has been well studied [31]; see also recent reviews in this volume [32,33]. Our goal in this section is to demonstrate that associative learning can be viewed in terms of coevolving learning and data-acquisition mechanisms. We then show in §4 that thinking in these terms may help explain how associative learning can gradually evolve into more complex cognitive mechanisms.. Learning to associate data in the environment with a probability of finding food presents two problems. The first is how to decide which data items should be learned and monitored; the second is to determine how to monitor and represent the reward probability predicted by the data items that are learned/monitored. Most learning models deal with the second problem and ignore the first. It is usually assumed in such models that the subject already knows the alternatives that should be sampled (e.g. buttons or levers to press, keys to peck or flowers to visit); the model captures only the process of sampling ...
In three experiments, we assessed transitive inference performance as a function of awareness that the elements of the task could be arranged in a hierarchy. In experiment 1, which involved a five-item transitive inference task, aware participants performed well on the transitive probe pair BD, but unaware participants performed at chance. Experiment 2 used a six-item transitive inference task (with three transitive probe pairs) and yielded similar results. In experiment 3, memory-impaired patients were given a five-item transitive inference task. On the transitive probe pair BD, controls performed like the participants in experiments 1 and 2. Specifically, aware controls performed well, and unaware controls performed poorly. Memory-impaired patients had difficulty learning the premise pairs and did not reach criterion, even after 2 training days.. Our results are consistent with previous findings that aware participants performed better than unaware participants on measures of transitive ...
Every philosopher (e.g. scientist) is slave of some formalism and tends to apply it as much as possible to any reality aspects. This is indeed a form of bias and my bias, recently, is that I tend to interpret everything in terms of bias/variance… So why not pushing this to the extreme and applying it to nothing less than the hardest issue of science and philosophy? conscience, as simple as that…. In particular I will aim here to address issues like: does conscience exist really, what is its function, may robots have one, and so on…. Lets go straight to the end of my reasoning: we could use the bias/variance formalism, useful to describe any learning procedure, to support the idea that conscience is not only an epiphenomenon but rather a necessary component of every rational cognitive process. In particular conscience is required for interacting with a complex multivariate, multi agent and uncertain reality where the criterion of effectiveness/success of such interaction is complex, ...

Neuroplasticity is the biological capacity of the nervous system to modify its structure and functioning to adapt to both physiological and pathological variations in the environment. Its main physiological consequences are learning and memory, and its pathological outcome is neurological rehabilitation. The continuous change and initial fragility of the developing brain make the embryonic and foetal periods especially plastic (what is known as developmental neuroplasticity). The progressive reduction in plasticity, however, is never complete and the capacity to modify the brain circuits in response to new learning (adaptive neuroplasticity) or brain injuries (reactive neuroplasticity) remains throughout the individuals entire lifespan ...

It is reasonable to expect that the saving rate of the top quintile of the income distribution will do the bulk of the rebounding. (emphasis added: CHS) As I noted earlier, the saving rate of this quintile accounted for virtually all of the decline in the aggregate personal saving rate. Because households in this income quintile own about 65 percent of aggregate net worth, any revaluation of assets will be felt strongly in this group and consequently their saving behavior should most clearly reflect this influence. So Mr. Ferguson is saying the 20% will be doing whatever saving will be done. Nice for them, but what about the other 80%? What he is also suggesting is that as weve collectively expected more and more income, weve compensated for the gap between reality (stagnant incomes and declining purchasing power) and our expectations ("I deserve it!") by borrowing off credit cards and our equity ...

The team reported that the validation set comprized 46 subjects, 46 fecal samples, but no mucosal samples. For each subject, the researchers measured exhaled H2 and CH4, oro-anal transit time, and the severity of psychological and gastrointestinal symptoms. The researchers measured fecal methanogens by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Numerical ecology analyses and a machine learning procedure were used to analyze the data.. The team observed that fecal microbiota showed covariation with mucosal adherent microbiota. The research team found no differences in fecal microbiota abundance or composition between patients with IBS vs healthy patients. A machine learning procedure, a computational statistical technique, allowed us to reduce the 16S ribosomal RNA data complexity into a microbial signature for severe IBS, consisting of 90 bacterial operational taxonomic units. The team confirmed the robustness of the intestinal microbial signature for severe IBS in the validation set. The signature ...

class is not necessarily true equality. Very often it is merely an equivalence relation, where two equivalent values may be distinguishable by other means. For example, we might consider two binary trees to be equal if they contain the same elements, even if their shapes are different. Because of this phenomenon, implementations of observable collections (ie, collections where it is possible to inspect the elements) are rather constrained. Such an implementation must retain the actual elements that were inserted. For example, it is not possible in general to represent an observable bag as a finite map from elements to counts, because even if we know that a given bag contains, say, three elements from some equivalence class, we do not necessarily know which three. On the other hand, implementations of non-observable collections have much greater freedom to choose abstract representations of each equivalence class. For example, representing a bag as a finite map from elements to counts works fine ...
