To answer the question, why do we need a new medical journal in Central Asia, it is essential to understand that with transition to the new standards of scientific research in majority of Central Asian countries, the crucial need in change of approaches in biomedical publishing corresponding to worldwide standards has emerged. A sharp transition to new standards in science in several countries like Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan caused situation, when:. 1. State policy requirements to scientific research in these countries become equivalent to generally accepted in the world.. 2. Development in medicine and medical technologies in these countries made necessary new requirements for academic advancement - publications in journals indexed in PUBMED, Scopus, Web of Science and PMC.. 3. Modern mentality of researchers demands new platform for expression of thoughts and ideas. 4. Condition of medical periodical journals, published in Central Asian countries do not always conform the ...
associated Professor at the Department of world economy of the Tajikistan state University of cooperation, World Economy Department. THE PROBLEMS OF CONFLICT SITUATIONS DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL ASIA AND THE PROCESS OF THEIR RESOLUTION. This article contains an analysis of potential conflicts in Central Asia, the basis of which is a peacebuilding strategy in the region. With the exception of the Tajik war of the early 1990s, in spite of the often expressed fears there was a fairly peaceful situation in Central Asia since the independence came in 1991 and till the end. However, the problems, on the basis of which the conflict may emerge, have not disappeared, moreover, they were supplemented by a number of new factors, connected primarily with the political development of the Central Asian states and the whole region after 1991.. Keywords: Central Asia, conflict, political conflict, peaceful situation, region of potential conflicts.. ...
Echinococcosis, caused by the zoonotic cestodes Echinococcus granulosus (sensu lato) and Echinococcus multilocularis, is highly endemic in the Central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan, and is being identified increasingly as a public health problem, especially amongst pastoral communities. As domestic dogs are considered to be the main source of human infection, the identification of potential transmission pathways is of relevance when considering implementing an echinococcosis control scheme. The current report describes the results of an analytical study of canine Echinococcus coproantigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) prevalence in the Alay valley of southern Kyrgyzstan prior to the commencement of regular praziquantel dosing of dogs. A logistic regression model using a form of Bayes modal estimation was used to identify possible risk factors for coproantigen positivity, and the output was interpreted in a Bayesian context (posterior distributions of the coefficients of interest). The ...

Bride kidnapping remains a common practice in a handful of countries. And when young women are kidnapped into marriage, their babies pay a price, suggests new research from Duke University. The researchers looked at the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan, where bride kidnapping remains widespread. Infants born to kidnapped brides had birthweights 80 to 190 grams lower than other babies, says the new paper, which appears online in Demography.

Pastoral and farmer populations, who have coexisted in Central Asia since the fourth millennium B.C. , present not only different lifestyles and means of subsistence but also various types of social organization. Pastoral populations are organized into so-called descent groups (tribes, clans, and lineages) and practice exogamous marriages (a man chooses a bride in a different lineage or clan). In Central Asia, these descent groups are patrilineal: The children are systematically affiliated with the descent groups of the father. By contrast, farmer populations are organized into families (extended or nuclear) and often establish endogamous marriages with cousins . This study aims at better understanding the impact of these differences in lifestyle and social organization on the shaping of genetic diversity. We show that pastoral populations exhibit a substantial loss of Y chromosome diversity in comparison to farmers but that no such a difference is observed at the mitochondrial-DNA level. Our ...
As reports of the spread of bird flu mount, many have expressed concern about the ability of Central Asian countries to come to grips with the problem. There have also been concerns that the notoriously closed regime in Turkmenistan might be less than forthcoming about any outbreaks there. On 12 January, RFE/RL Turkmen Service correspondent Muhammad Tahir spoke with Erwin Northoff, news coordinator for the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about the challenges facing Central Asian countries coping with bird flu.
Central Asia has a great climate for growing marijuana. The cannabis plant, which is indigenous to the region, blankets hillsides and reveals itself stubbornly in urban parks. Archeological evidence suggests cannabis was used in Central Asia 6,000 or more years ago and spread along early trade routes with Europe and East Asia.. Eurasianet reports in its article Uzbekistan returns to its roots with cannabis cultivation that now Uzbekistan, which promotes itself as the tourist-friendly heart of the Silk Road, is experimenting with the plant anew. This is not good-time ganja, however. A French-Uzbek joint venture will begin growing industrial hemp, which contains low amounts of mind-altering tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, in Khorezm region, Uzbekistans Foreign Ministry said this month. The plants fibers have a variety of uses: in paper, ropes, building supplies and textiles. In many ways, hemp is a lot like Uzbekistans infamous cash crop - cotton. But hemp uses less water, the Foreign Ministry ...
The social and legal situation of women in Uzbekistan has been influenced by local traditions, religion, the Soviet rule, and changing social norms since independence. The availability of contraceptives and maternal healthcare is mixed. 62.3% of women were using free contraceptives in 2003. However, the UN estimates that about 13.7% of women in Uzbekistan who would like to prevent, or delay, their next pregnancy are unable to do so because of limited access to contraceptives. In 2000, there were approximately 20,900 midwives in the country. There are reports that forced sterilization of women is practiced in Uzbekistan. A BBC World Service Assignment report on 12 April 2012 uncovered evidence that women are being sterilised, often without their knowledge, in an effort by the government to control the population. Self-immolation [setting ones self on fire] is a common form of suicide among women in Uzbekistan. In 2001 it was estimated that approximately 500 women a year kill themselves because ...
October 17, UZBEKISTAN Sunday Morning is a Favoured Time for Raids in Uzbekistan; Hare Krishna devotees in the north-western Khorezm region targeted. Sunday morning worship services have recently been a favoured time for police raids on Protestant churches, Forum 18 News Service has noted. Three separate raids on Sunday morning worship have taken place in recent weeks, on churches in the capital Tashkent and the nearby town of Angren. Also, Zamira Shirazova, a dancer in a folk group in north-west Uzbekistan, has been fired because she is a Protestant. Some sources suggest that Pentecostal churches have been banned from preaching in Uzbek, despite it being the state language, although this ban has apparently not been extended to other Protestant denominations or other faiths. Other religious minorities also face severe pressure - both official and social. One example is the small number of Hare Krishna devotees in the Khorezm region of north-western Uzbekistan. On 24 September, one Baptist church ...

Uzbekistan has been officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a country that eliminated measles and rubella, UNICEF office in Uzbekistan reported.. The country achieved elimination of these diseases from January 2014 to December 2016.. The Regional Verification Commission for Measles and Rubella in the WHO European Region underlined that this fact contributes significantly to the goal of eliminating measles and rubella throughout the European region.. In 2007, Uzbekistan introduced the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination to the National Immunization Calendar. Two shots of MMR vaccine for children (in the ages of 12 months and 6 years old) build good immunity against these diseases for the rest of their lives.. MMR vaccination rates in the country are as high as 99.5 percent during the first vaccination and 99.7 percent in re-vaccination (2016).. Infectious diseases are one of the major threats to the health of children. Therefore, the Ministry of Health makes ...

Bilateral relations between Japan and Kazakhstan have grown increasingly robust since the latter gained independence in 1991. From an economic standpoint, bilateral trade from January to October 2019 totaled $1.3 billion. Japans foreign direct investment (FDI) and official developmental assistance (ODA) makes it one of the top 10 investors in Kazakhstan, and it has invested more than $7 billion in the country. The two countries have also sought to establish closer political ties through the Central Asia + Japan dialogue, an interregional forum for government officials in the five Central Asian countries and Japan to discuss and coordinate potential areas of cooperation.. However, Japan and Kazakhstan have another area of collaboration that delves into the shared historical traumas of both nations: a commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. Japans opposition to nuclear weapons stems from the U.S. bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, which directly killed over 200,000 people and have ...
The recent travails in Uzbekistan of Russian cellphone giant MTS - hit by employee arrests and a three-month suspension - highlight the perils for foreigners of doing business in Central Asias most populous country. Although Tashkent tries to project an investor-friendly image, experts say pervasive corruption makes it difficult, if not impossible for most foreign entities to enjoy a stable operating environment.. Tashkent suspended the operations of Uzdunrobita, MTS Uzbekistan arm, on July 17 for 10 working days, accusing it of using equipment illegally. On July 30, the suspension was extended for three months. Tashkent has also accused MTS representatives of engaging in criminal activity, including evading $1.3 million in taxes and violating Uzbekistans Byzantine currency regulations.. Five managers - including Russian citizen Radik Dautov, who was appointed Uzdunrobitas acting head after director Bekzod Akhmedov fled Uzbekistan - are under arrest. On July 25, Russian officials said they ...

Created as a result of events in December 1991 and becoming more prominent in 1998, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) is an insurgency based on Salafist religious doctrines, allied with the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Their area of operations is not limited to Uzbekistan, but centers on the Ferghana Valley, where the Uzbek, Kyrgyz, and Tajik borders come together. They have also operated in Afghanistan with the support of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Like the Taliban, it wants to enforce sharia not as a way of creating just society but simply as a means to regulate personal behavior and dress code for Muslims - a concept that distorts centuries of tradition, culture, history, and even the religion of Islam itself.[1] Its existence is one of the reasons that the government of Uzbekistan has cooperated with the U.S. in the Afghanistan War (2001-). The United States first declared it a terrorist organization in 2000 and has renewed the designation for the Movement, also known as Islamic Jihad. [2] ...

A Central Asian country of incredible natural beauty and proud nomadic traditions, most of the territory of present-day Kyrgyzstan was formally annexed to the Russian Empire in 1876. The Kyrgyz staged a major revolt against the Tsarist Empire in 1916 in which almost one-sixth of the Kyrgyz population was killed. Kyrgyzstan became a Soviet republic in 1936 and achieved independence in 1991 when the USSR dissolved. Nationwide demonstrations in the spring of 2005 resulted in the ouster of President Askar AKAEV, who had run the country since 1990. Former Prime Minister Kurmanbek BAKIEV overwhelmingly won the presidential election in the summer of 2005. Over the next few years, he manipulated the parliament to accrue new powers for the presidency. In July 2009, after months of harassment against his opponents and media critics, BAKIEV won reelection in a presidential campaign that the international community deemed flawed. Tajikistan was one of the first countries to receive COVID-19 support. In April 2020, the World Bank provided emergency relief to Tajikistan, along with aid from various other countries. The World Bank said that it is a continuous goal to strengthen Tajikistans response to COVID-19 by improving its health care system.. On June 7, 2020, Tajikistan received emergency medical teams (EMTs) and mobile laboratories from Poland, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom. After this support, the country began to see an increase in COVID-19 contact tracing, testing and optimization of patient care. The EMTs gave Tajikistani health care workers advice on how to handle severe COVID-19 cases.. Tajikistan enacted a national COVID-19 laboratory upscale plan, and with help from international aid, the Tajikistan government established a Public Emergency Operations Center. On July 22, 2020, Russian lab experts arrived in the Central Asian country to help strengthen its data management system. Now, Tajikistan is ...

Dangling carrots is all part of Beijings strategy of showing its Central Asian neighbors that cooperation is a two-way street that can benefit both parties. In Kazakhstan, for example, Chinas state oil company CNPC snapped up an 8.33 percent stake in the supergiant Kashagan oilfield just as it is set to begin commercial production. But there was a quid pro quo for Astana: CNPC agreed to finance oil infrastructure and pay half the states investment obligations to Kashagan until it starts turning a profit (when Kazakhstan will repay the funds).. As we have seen from this visit, China is able to offer levels of investment on a scale which few other partners are willing to match, said Nice. China also enables Central Asian states to diversify their economic and foreign policy options, and reduce their reliance on Russia.. As Deirdre Tynan, Central Asian project director at the International Crisis Group, points out, for Beijing, too, there is more to the partnership than oil and gas. Central ...

However, there are very few individual-level data on distribution of health outcomes in Central Asian countries of the former Soviet Union. We analysed socioeconomic predictors of two self-rated health outcomes in a national survey in Kazakhstan. Methods. We used data from the 2012 Kazakhstan Household Health Survey on 12,560 respondents aged 15+. Self-rated health, self-reported worsening of health, and a range of socio-demographic variables were collected in an interview. The self-rated health outcomes were dichotomized and logistic ...
Its not easy being a boy band in conservative pockets of Kazakhstan.. Just ask the musical act Ninety One. The band, so named because all five of its fashionable young members were born after 1991, is Kazakhstans biggest Korean Pop (K-Pop) group and already has a devoted fan base in Almaty and Astana, the countrys biggest cities.. But since it began a tour last month to some of the more remote areas of that Central Asian country of 18 million people, it has had plenty of trouble.. The bands members, who say they wont speak publicly about their experiences until their first national tour ends in early November, have a look that any teenager in South Korea or many other places in Asia or around the world might instantly recognize. Mixing brightly dyed hair, mascara-ringed eyes, lipstick, necklaces, and high-energy songs, K-Pop began in South Korea in the early 1990s and has since spawned a devoted worldwide subculture thanks to video clips shared widely on social networks.. But since creating ...

Professor Kathleen Burk. PICTURE 2: MAP OF THE GREAT GAME - The term The Great Game has a resonance about it, calling up vague memories of derring-do in the mountains and deserts of Central Asia, of the conflict for mastery between two great empires in the nineteenth century, the Russian and the British. For the historian, it refers to the Anglo-Russian competition from Constantinople on the Bosphorus to India, taking in Egypt, Turkey, other Arab lands, Persia and the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, Central Asia and North-West India. [For the romantic, it centred on the territory which stretched from the Caucasus Mountains in the west, across the great deserts and mountains of Central Asia, to Turkestan and Tibet in the east.] The British feared, and many Russians hoped, that the prize was India. It lasted from approximately 1807 to 1914, but particularly from 1829, when Russia defeated the Ottoman Empire and Persia, and 1907, when the two countries signed the Anglo-Russian Agreement, which set out ...
Nice analysis, but heres an alternative narrative. The ark settled in central Asia with Noah, his 3 sons, and their wives (probably more than one wife per man) roughly 4600 years ago. They contained all the DNA currently found in modern man. As they reproduced, some offspring had more dark pigment genes and some had less. Each was attracted to a mate of similar coloring, and over 10-12 generations the effect was magnified, producing the various races of mankind who in turn went their own way. The oldest civilization (note: civilization, not evidence of man) is in China, where their cultural connection to dragons originates from their early direct contact with living dinosaurs. The newest civilizations are in South America, which are the furthest from central Asia (ie. it took longer for humans to get there). All civilizations have flood stories because they all arose from survivors of the great flood. All great migrations of humankind appear to have come out of central Asia, whether it was ...

Downloadable! The agricultural sector of Uzbekistan is still characterized by unsustainable production patterns and the agricultural institutions of the country are controlled to a large extent through government intervention. The Government takes the decision to grow cotton and wheat and fix the output prices. The decision about the production quotas for cotton and wheat leads to a restricted area and water availability for growing other crops. The country is affected by a locally occurring climate change as well as regional climate change threatens to aggravate existing water use conflicts. The current and expected climatic conditions are showing the additional irrigation applications for a sustainable and fruitful agricultural production. The partial implementation of reforms such as privatization and liberalization of agricultural markets affect the development of agriculture and agricultural trade in Uzbekistan. This paper highlights the major effects of market and price liberalization on
Uzbekistan is a dry, landlocked country of which 11% consists of intensely cultivated, irrigated river valleys. More than 60% of its population lives in densely populated rural communities. Uzbekistan is now the world´s second-largest cotton exporter and fifth largest producer; it relies heavily on cotton production as the major source of export earnings. Other major export earners include gold, natural gas, and oil. Following independence in September 1991, the government sought to prop up its Soviet-style command economy with subsidies and tight controls on production and prices. While aware of the need to improve the investment climate, the government still sponsors measures that often increase, not decrease, its control over business decisions. A sharp increase in the inequality of income distribution has hurt the lower ranks of society since independence. In 2003, the government accepted the obligations of Article VIII under the International Monetary Fund (IMF), providing for full ...

have been sequenced. Although all samples were obtained from individuals residing in Uzbekistan, individuals with direct ancestry from neighboring Central Asian countries are included. Individuals of Uzbek ancestry represent five distinct geographic regions of Uzbekistan: Fergana, Karakalpakstan, Khorezm, Qashkadarya, and Tashkent. Individuals with direct ancestry in nearby countries originate from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. Our data reinforce the evidence of distinct clinal patterns that have been described among Central Asian populations with classical, mtDNA, and Y-chromosomal markers. Our data also reveal hallmarks of recent demographic events. Despite their current close geographic proximity, the populations with ancestry in neighboring countries show little sign of admixture and retain the primary mtDNA patterns of their source populations. The genetic distances and haplogroup distributions among the ethnic populations are more indicative of ...

Turkmenistan, a Central Asian country that borders Afghanistan to the northwest, is rarely in our news. Yet it has the fourth (possibly third) largest natural gas reserves in the world. (Iran is number two; Russia is number one). The planned pipeline is called TAPI, after the initials of the four participating countries Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.Since 1991, there has been rivalry among great and regional powers for access to Turkmenistan s natural gas. It can only get to market through pipelines.Pipelines are geopolitically important; they connect trading partners and influence the regional balance of power. Moves by various countries to gain access or control of Central Asia s energy resources are closely watched. The Russians have a pipeline north to connect with a network serving Europe. Russian Orientalism portraying Central Asians through stereotypes, such as with watermelons and attached to the land, helped Russians situate themselves in their limbo position between the East and the West. An interesting medley of the Russian Self and Asian Other is Alexander Volkov: born in Turkestan (the former name of the Central Asian territories) and educated in St Petersburg and Kiev, he immersed himself in Central Asian culture for many decades far from the reach of Moscow. His work stands out as not being concerned with a unity of nations or modernisation, but rather for that rare thing other Soviet artists were unprepared to show: the effort and associated stresses incurred by Central Asian labour to propel modernisation. The works do not openly talk about the Soviet nature of the exertion; but even acknowledging such toil ...

The wildlife of Turkmenistan is the flora and fauna of Turkmenistan, and the natural habitats in which they live. Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia to the east of the Caspian Sea. Two thirds of the country is hot dry plains and desert, and the rest is more mountainous. Very little rain falls in summer and the chief precipitation occurs in the southern part of the country in the winter and spring. The Caspian coast has milder winters. The desert sees limited plant growth in the winter, with grasses and xeric plants and shrubs sprouting, and with the arrival of spring, the rains encourage the growth and flowering of ephemeral plants. The mountains in the south of the country are covered in shrublike and juniper woodlands, and larger trees grow in the gullies and river valleys. A wide range of animals are found in Turkmenistan, including 91 species of mammal, 82 species of reptile and nearly 400 species of bird. A number of nature reserves and sanctuaries have been created for the ...
Present-day Turkmenistan covers territory that has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries. The area was ruled in antiquity by various Persian empires, and was conquered by Alexander the Great, Muslim armies, the Mongols, Turkic warriors, and eventually the Russians. In medieval times, Merv (located in present-day Mary province) was one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road. Annexed by Russia in the late 1800s, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1924, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic; it achieved independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. Extensive hydrocarbon/natural gas reserves, which have yet to be fully exploited, have begun to transform the country. The Government of Turkmenistan is moving to expand its extraction and delivery projects and has attempted to diversify its gas export routes beyond Russias pipeline network. In 2010, new gas export pipelines that ...

JEDDAH: Kazakhstan, an important Central Asian country, became independent after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The most recent developments suggest a more complex outcome. On the positive side, all three color revolution countries, plus Moldova, have thus far escaped the authoritarian fate of practically all other non-Baltic states in the region. For example, although the new president of Kyrgyzstan, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, grew increasingly autocratic after taking power in the countrys 2005 uprising, he was forced into exile in 2010. The politicians who replaced him presided over the adoption of a revised constitution and national elections that were regarded as credible and competitive. Among other improvements, the new charter shifted significant power to the parliament, moving away from the kind of superpresidential system that has undergirded autocratic rule in other Central Asian countries. Subsequent parliamentary elections took place in a peaceful environment and were regarded as an improvement. As a consequence of these developments-and despite a wave of persecution against the ethnic Uzbek minority ...

Lithuania is considered a transit country for the trafficking of illicit substances between Western European, Eastern European and Scandinavian countries, mainly by land.. Methamphetamine is the most common illicit drug produced locally. In 2013, three methamphetamine production sites were dismantled in Lithuania, and two were dismantled in 2015. Lithuanian-produced amphetamines are transported by road or ferry to Scandinavian countries, Belarus, Russia and the United Kingdom.. Small quantities of cannabis are cultivated in the country, predominantly in artificial conditions. Cannabis products arrive in Lithuania from the Netherlands or Spain, mainly in transit. Some synthetic stimulants, particularly MDMA tablets in recent years, have been imported from the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland.. Heroin is smuggled from Central Asian countries through Russia and Belarus, frequently for onward transit to Western European countries. Testing indicates that the purity of the heroin seized has ...
Chinas advanced surveillance regime is taking root along the length of the Belt and Road-especially the Belt, the overland Eurasian routes that were the origin of the governments ambitious investment project. Recently, Kyrgyzstan opened a new police command center in its capital, Bishkek, putting its new facial recognition cameras to work. The equipment was supplied-reportedly free of charge-by the China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation, a defense company currently sanctioned by the United States.. The initiative is part of Bishkeks emerging effort to become a so-called smart city-a catchall term for cities with advanced data-processing capabilities. Such projects are being implemented across the region with help from China. This April, Huawei closed a $1 billion deal with Uzbekistan to build a traffic-monitoring system involving some 883 cameras. Meanwhile Hikvision-another Chinese company under U.S. sanctions that advertises its ability to spot the faces of members of the ...

By 1995 the Sea lost 3/4 of its water volume, surface area shrank by half, water level fell by 19 meters. The Sea runoff its shores by 100-150 km and exposed more than 33 sq. km. of its seabed, where more than 100 million tons of salty dust are being carried out faraway from the sea line annually. It is consisted of grains in form of aerosol with impurities of agricultural poisonous inputs, fertilizers, and other harmful industrial and household drains. Waters from rivers do not reach the Sea because they gradually disappear in desert sands. The drying up of the Aral Sea is also negatively affecting the ...
But once in office Bakiyev reneged. The long-running tug-of-war between the parliament and president on the division of power resumed. By introducing a new electoral law and founding his own party, Ak Zhol (bright path), he gained control of the legislature in the 2007 parliamentary poll. Despite his enhanced powers, Bakiyev failed to tackle the rise of the black economy, persistent corruption, and the general weakness of the economy. It was estimated that as much as 52% of the Kyrgyz economy was black or related to smuggling. Another problem was the growing influence of organised crime related mainly to the smuggling of drugs from Afghanistan via Tajikistan on their way to Russia and beyond ...

Total crude and ASR annual VC were 1.1 and 0.9, respectively in Kazakhstan, and 0.3 and 0.3, respectively in Kyrgyzstan. Histological verification in VC was 100% in Kazakhstan and 92% in Kyrgyzstan. Annual average age was 70.8 ± 0.3 years (95% CI 70.2-71.3) in Kazakhstan and 68.4 ± 1.8 (95% CI 66.6-70.2) in Kyrgyzstan. In both republics age-specific rate was higher in the oldest groups (60-69 - 4.1 and 70+ 9.0 per 100 000). The most ancient Kulbulak and Obi Rakhmon settlements as well as Teshiktash and Amankutan are particularly famous among them.. More. Long associated with its aggressive promotion of atheism, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union adopted a nuanced, flexible, and often contradictory approach toward Islam in the USSRs largest Muslim region, Central Asia. Soviet and Muslim demonstrates how the Soviet state unwittingly set in motion a process of institutionalization during World War II that culminated in a permanent space for Islam in a society ruled by atheists. Central Asia was the sole Muslim region of the former Russian empire to lack a centralized Islamic organization, or muftiate. When the Soviet leader Stalin created such a body for the region as part of his religious reforms during World War II, he acknowledged that the Muslim faith could enjoy some legal protection under Communist rule. From a skeletal and ...
