Work on the cathedral as a memorial to St. Olav started in 1070. It was finished some time around 1300, nearly 150 years after being established as the cathedral of the diocese. The cathedral was badly damaged by fires in 1327 and again in 1531. The nave was destroyed and was not rebuilt until the restoration in early 1900s. In 1708, the church burned down completely except for the stone walls. It was struck by lightning in 1719, and was again ravaged by fire. Major rebuilding and restoration of the cathedral started in 1869, initially led by architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer, and nearly completed by Christian Christie. It was officially completed in 2001. Maintenance of the cathedral is an ongoing process. The oldest parts of the cathedral consist of the octagon with its surrounding ambulatory. This was the site of the original high altar, with the reliquary casket of Saint Olav, and choir. Design of the octagon may have been inspired by the Corona of Canterbury Cathedral, although octagonal ...

23 Respondents who reported participating in more than three cultural activities in the 12 months before interview were asked to nominate the three activities they participated in the most. Then these respondents were asked questions about each of these three activities, such as whether payment was received, which type of payment was received and reasons for participation. For example, if a person reported participating in four activities, then nominated the three activities they did the most, the survey would not have collected further information, such as reasons for participation, about the respondents fourth activity. Respondents who reported participating in three or fewer cultural activities were asked the same questions about each of their activities. Information about respondents participation in up to three cultural activities is presented in Tables 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. The estimates of participants for each cultural activity in Table 5 is different to the estimates for ...
Cultural Heritage preventive conservation requires the monitoring of the parameters involved in the process of deterioration of artworks. Thus, both long-term monitoring of the environmental parameters as well as further analysis of the recorded data are necessary. The long-term monitoring at frequencies higher than 1 data point/day generates large volumes of data that are difficult to store, manage and analyze. This paper presents software which uses a free open source database engine that allows managing and interacting with huge amounts of data from environmental monitoring of cultural heritage sites. It is of simple operation and offers multiple capabilities, such as detection of anomalous data, inquiries, graph plotting and mean trajectories. It is also possible to export the data to a spreadsheet for analyses with more advanced statistical methods (principal component analysis, ANOVA, linear regression, etc.). This paper also deals with a practical application developed for the Renaissance
The Cathedral has had 6 Pipe Organs in its over 150 years history. The first organ was built by Mathias Schwab, of Cincinnati. It was described in the book entitled "Fifty Years at Saint Johns Cathedral" published by the Cathedral. The first organ was consecrated on July 31, 1853 the same date of the consecration of the Cathedral.. "The case is of black walnut. The instrument has two banks of keys, and thirty-one stops. The great organ is very full and heavy; the more delicate stops, however, are disproportionate, and lack an oily smoothness of tone; besides the combination of stops does not meet our idea of a perfect instrument of that size. It is and probably will be for many years, the most powerful instrument in this part of the country; but we venture to say that not three summers will pass away, before there will be four or five organs in this city, more harmonious in all their parts, and better adapted to the churches in which they are placed. It is to be played by Henry Hillmantel, a ...

According to the October 2016 edition of Cathedral Times from Lincoln Cathedral, £1.6 million a year is spent keeping the cathedral in shape;[37] the most recent project completed has been the restoration of the West Front in 2000. About ten years ago[when?] it was discovered that the flying buttresses on the east end were no longer connected to the adjoining stonework, and repairs were made to prevent collapse. The most recent problem was the discovery that the stonework of the Deans Eye window in the transept was crumbling, meaning that a complete reconstruction of the window has had to be carried out according to the conservation criteria set out by the International Council on Monuments and Sites. There was a period of great anxiety when it emerged that the stonework needed to shift only 5 mm (0.20 in) for the entire window to collapse. Specialist engineers removed the windows tracery before installing a strengthened, more stable replacement. In addition to this the original stained glass ...

In this article we explore the practical use of medialness informed by perception studies as a representation and processing layer for describing a class of works of visual art. Our focus is towards the description of 2D objects in visual art, such as found in drawings, paintings, calligraphy, graffiti writing, where approximate boundaries or lines delimit regions associated to recognizable objects or their constitutive parts. We motivate this exploration on the one hand by considering how ideas emerging from the visual arts, cartoon animation and general drawing practice point towards the likely importance of medialness in guiding the interaction of the traditionally trained artist with the artifact. On the other hand, we also consider recent studies and results in cognitive science which point in similar directions in emphasizing the likely importance of medialness, an extension of the abstract mathematical representation known as medial axis or Voronoi graphs, as a core feature used by humans in

The present pilot study was performed as part of the preparation for a larger controlled evaluation of health effects of a work site-based cultural programme. Forty participants, 10 in each of 4 work sites, were exposed to cultural events that took place once a week during a 3-month period. Standardised health questionnaires were distributed and blood samples collected before and after the three-month period. Visual analogue scales were distributed before and after the event, and from those average emotional effects for each individual were calculated. The individuals who had the highest average emotional effects were those who had the most pronounced deterioration in social support at work - a possible jealousy effect. The potentially most important effect to be evaluated is probably a collective beneficial "climate change" effect which cannot be studied if participants are sparsely distributed in the work site.. ...

Siena Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Siena) is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Previously the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Siena, from the 15th century the Archdiocese of Siena, it is now that of the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val dElsa-Montalcino. The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white ...
The cathedral is a hall church, vaulted over five aisles, the outer two divided into chapels. The high altar is raised, allowing a clear view into the crypt. The cathedral is dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona, co-patron saint of Barcelona, a young virgin who, according to Catholic legends, suffered martyrdom during Roman times in the city. One story has it that she was exposed naked in the public square and a miraculous snowfall in mid-spring covered her nudity. The enraged Romans put her into a barrel with knives stuck into it and rolled it down a street. ...
Zvartnots, a complex of structures erected in the middle of the 7th century near Ejmiatsin, is of extreme architectural value. The complex consisted of St. George temple or Zvartnots ("vigil forces", "celestial angels") and the palace of Catholicos Nerses Ill, known as "Builder". Zvartnots, buiIt as Armenias main cathedral in 641-661, was to suppress Echmiadzin cathedral by its grandeur. This purpose was served by the original architectural composition of the building which is an example of a central-dome temple different in its appearance from the antique and Byzantine structures of this kind. The plan of Zvartnots is based on the composition of the central nucleus of Armenias cross-winged, dome-type structures of the previous times, that is the Greek cross. However, this cross is harmoniously fitted into a circle rather than into a square. Zvartnots architecture was supposed to impress the onlooker by its extraordinary artistic splendor. This determined the size of the temple, its layout ...
The connection to the British Isles was always significant. One Andrew Smith from Scotland was particularly busy in Stavanger Cathedral producing, in the 17th century, no less than five epitaphs and a sumptuously carved and decorated pulpit.. In 1992, the Reil brothers completed a fine classical organ on a new gallery at the West end of the Nave. Its installation necessitated the removal of some of the roof trusses. Fortunately the roof did not suffer from the removal of some of its support but, when it was finished, the Historic Buildings Commission was rather less than happy. Not because the organ looked less than fine nobody could think that but it was somewhat larger than they had imagined it was going to be. This had consequences for the Choir organ later on.. It had always been the intention of the organ committee that, ultimately, Stavanger Cathedral should have two organs. The main West gallery instrument would serve most purposes, but with the distance involved it was not ideal for ...
As St. Thomas More Cathedral School in Arlington celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, the influence of the religious order that ran the school for much of its history still looms large. The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary were teachers and administrators at the cathedral school from 1944 until 1998.
One of the first, and most famous, cathedrals to incorporate the use of flying buttresses was the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. Its construction began in 1163 and the cathedral was finally completed around the year 1345. Many different architects and ideals went into the construction of Notre Dame. Flying buttresses were incorporated into the architecture for the primary use of balancing the pressure produced by such vaulted spaces. Another very important reason flying buttresses were used in the Notre Dame Cathedral was to allow adequate sunlight into the building (Temko 127). With such high walls and lack of windows the cathedral proved to be quite dark. Architects then realized that with the addition of more flying buttresses, they could place large stained glass windows along the walls of the cathedral to allow in more light. The incorporation of these large windows would further weaken the stability of the walls; however the strength of the flying buttresses solved such issues ...
Cathedral Dog Park, located across King Street from Christ the King Cathedral, is a bit of a hidden gem in the city, albeit a rough one. It is the largest dog park in the downtown core, yet has no parking, no fresh water source, and is poorly maintained. Anyone who currently wishes to use the dog park has two options when parking: park in the Fortinos Plaza and risk getting a ticket, or park at the service entrance to the park and risk getting a ticket. Then you have to try and safely get your dog from your car to the park, a scary thought considering how fast cars travel along King Street.. Furthermore, the park has no clean water source, despite having a service building with a washroom immediately beside the parks south entrance. Because there is no clean water, dogs resort to drinking water from the pools that form in the parks low spots, disgusting water that has urine & faeces in it, spreading diseases like bordetella and leptospirosis (the last of which can be spread to humans).. In an ...

BACKGROUND: Black and white pain drawings were introduced as a proposed means to identify patients, presenting with low back pain, who demonstrated functional overlay upon neurological testing. The use of color may enhance the usefulness of such pain drawings, but has not been described for adult patients.. AIMS: To retrospectively explore the use of colored pain drawings in patients with neck, low back, or radicular pain.. METHODS: Patients with neck, low back, or radicular pain referred to a community-based neurosurgical practice for evaluation during 1 year (n=359) depicted their pain on anatomical drawings using colored pencils representing different pain characteristics. Patients with abnormal (n=55) and normal (n=54) pain drawings were selected for this study. Use of medications, findings on physical examination, radiographic findings, activity levels, Waddell signs, and pending litigation were recorded and compared between patients with normal and abnormal pain drawings, as assessed ...

The modern-day arts-based community development movement is founded on the belief that the arts can be a powerful agent of personal, institutional, and community change. Since its beginnings in the 1970s, the movement has grown from a very small and contained universe of intent and definition to become a widespread approach to both art making and community building. Many of the ideas considered radical in 1977 can now be found in the guidelines and policies of agencies and funders that serve communities. To effectively assess the current impact of these ideas, it is useful to look at the movements components, its shared assumptions, and the vocabulary used to describe the work. This essay is a refreshed version of "Mapping the Field: Arts-based Community Development," originally published in 2002 by the Community Arts Network. Included here, the essay holds up well in todays context. It can be read in relation to another essay in this series titled, "Community Arts at Work across the U.S., ...

Artist Rep Margaret Danielak & Artist Julie Snyder. About twice a year Margaret and I offer The Art of Selling Art for visual artists through my sister site The Art Engine. We both have marketing backgrounds and are differently qualified to deliver the workshop with our unique viewpoints - both sides of the coin in selling art. The combination gives a multi-dimensional view of the art world and how to navigate in it. Personally I think Margaret is genius - she distills the actions and activities down to the essential elements. We work well together, both of us bringing different aspects and we really enjoy each others company.. We cover all the basics but the main focus is real-life coaching where the artists get to sell their art and we pose as buyers. We receive great feedback and its career changing for many. Not only is this really valuable - its also eye opening and fun! Its very rewarding to see these artists move forward with their careers. This fall we are implementing a new ...
This event is in partnership with the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College.. The emphasis on the text of Scripture at the expense of imagery promoted by the Reformation had a direct effect on the visual arts: throughout Protestant Europe, churches were whitewashed and any figural decoration was frowned upon. And yet the new medium of printmaking produced innovative religious imagery in large quantities, and sixteenth-century artists from countries that embraced the Reformation are some of the greatest visual interpreters of the Bible. This lecture will explore these two seemingly contradictory paths and how the arts reflected, interpreted, and reacted to Luthers teachings.. IMAGE:. ...

Islamic arts - Visual arts: In order to answer whether there is an aesthetic, iconographic, or stylistic unity to the visually perceptible arts of Islamic peoples, it is first essential to realize that no ethnic or geographical entity was Muslim from the beginning. There is no Islamic art, therefore, in the way there is a Chinese art or a French art. Nor is it simply a period art, like Gothic art or Baroque art, for once a land or an ethnic entity became Muslim, it remained Muslim, a small number of exceptions such as Spain or Sicily notwithstanding. Political and social events transformed a number

Since its original publication, Erwin Panofskys Meaning in the Visual Arts has been standard reading for students of art history. It is both an introduction to the study of art and, for those with more specialized interests, a profound discussion of art and life in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Panofskys historical technique reveals an abundance of detail, detail he skillfully relates to the life and work of individual painters and their times. The papers in this volume represent a cross-section of Panofskys major work. Included are selections from his well-known Studies in Iconology and The Life and Art of Albrecht D rer, plus an introduction and an epilogue-The History of Art as a Humanistic Discipline and Three Decades of Art History in the United States: Impressions of a Transplanted European-as well as pieces written especially for this collection. All display Panofskys vast erudition and deep commitment to a humanistic conception of art and art history.

The choirs sound is the epitome of the English cathedral sound, with lovely clear, transparent trebles. There is no hint of the continental sound of Westminster Cathedral. This is neither a good thing nor a bad one, simply a style preference. And when the English cathedral sound is done well as it is here, then it is very seductive. The male altos blend very well with the trebles. But there is the feeling, inevitable in most cathedral choirs, that the men singing the lower parts are not quite the equals of the professional chamber choirs who have made the repertoire their own. Then again, if you look at the choir roster, there are number of names such as Andrew Carwood and Edward Wickham, who have gone on to greater things ...

The Truth about God. "The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders" (Ps. 29).. What is the truth about God? [1] Our 2018 Cathedral theme is truth and this seems like a good place to begin. Eleven years ago our family found ourselves behind a square iron fence at a fairground with perhaps a hundred thousand people outside. The electricity generated by all those souls felt tangible. I remember the beautiful young dancers, old men in bright robes carrying holy objects and prayers chanted so loudly over loudspeakers that you could almost think of nothing else.. We were celebrating Timkat, the Feast of the Epiphany, in Addis Ababa as the special guests of the Abuna, a kind of pope for forty million Ethiopians. I will never forget the feeling I had when the people threw thousands of plastic bottles over the fence to be filled with blessed holy water.. In Greek, the word epiphany means to shine upon or to reveal. We associate this season with three images. First, it reminds us of ...

In Cathedrals of Science, Patrick Coffey describes how chemistry got its modern footing-how thirteen brilliant men and one woman struggled with the laws of the universe and with each other. They wanted to discover how the world worked, but they also wanted credit for making those discoveries, and their personalities often affected how that credit was assigned.

Moments before D.C. police found Jiamei Tian hiding in a bathroom stall at Washington National Cathedral, a family of tourists had spotted her in a back pew of the Children's Chapel guarding two bags and muttering softly in a foreign language.

Here we have the protestors on the steps of the cathedral. They had been prevented from occupying the Stock Exchange (private property etc). The police took their positions on the top of the steps to protect the cathedral and move the protesters on. What happened then is rather funny - and like the rest of events so far - very English. The Dean of St Pauls Giles Fraser (who the rabbit has met and rather liked - he says fuck a lot for a clergyman) thanked the police for their interest in the cathedrals protection but declared the cathedral not in need of the same and asked them politely to get off the steps, which they had no option other than to do. He then told the protesters that he didnt mind at all if they stayed but warned them the bells were very noisy if they were planning anything other than an early morning. And there they remain complete with a field kitchen, portable toilets and a media area streaming the protest to wherever. Oh and a sign telling all and sundry not to ...

A couple of years ago, there was a contest for control of the local citizens association. The group of candidates trying to wrest control of the organization to swing the organization to one of all-out support for Giants project, had all been involved with the grassroots group that worked hand-in-hand with Giants attorneys and PR firm. They were very vocal in their support of the Cathedral Commons development, and suggested that any reservations about the project meant opposition (yes, but means no). The other slate of candidates included those who publicly opposed or supported the development to varying degrees, but who all acknowledged that there were impacts and issues with the proposal that needed to be addressed. The campaign was hard fought and there was very high voting turnout among the membership -- and the avowedly pro-Giant faction lost by a substantial margin. So in what was as close to a referendum on the project as you could have, it seems the pro-PUDers lost to the ...

TURINGS CATHEDRAL. In the digital universe, there are two kinds of bits: bits that represent structure (differences in space) and bits that represent sequence (differences in time). Digital computers - as formalized by Alan Turing, and delivered by John von Neumann - are devices that translate between these two species of bits according to definite rules.. Exactly sixty years ago, at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, mathematician John von Neumann began seeking funding to build a machine that would do this at electronic speeds. "I am sure that the projected device, or rather the species of devices of which it is to be the first representative, is so radically new that many of its uses will become clear only after it has been put into operation," he wrote to Lewis Strauss on 24 October 1945. "Uses which are likely to be the most important are by definition those which we do not recognize at present because they are farthest removed from our present sphere.". Von Neumann ...
