Armillaria root rot threatens Cameroons Penja pepper (Piper nigrum L.) - Publications des agents du Cirad
Penja pepper (Piper nigrum) produced in Cameroon has long been recognized for its exceptional organoleptic quality. The pepper vine is grown using a support tree (Spondias mombin) in Cameroon. A root disease is associated with plant deaths in both plants. The disease symptoms are characterized by collar cracking and gummosis and the disease was tentatively identified as Armillaria root rot. In this work the extent of the problem was characterized by surveying 35 farms in Cameroon. Samples were taken from diseased support trees and pepper vines. Support trees exhibiting typical symptoms were found in approximately one third of the surveyed farms. In these farms, disease incidence and Pepper vine mortality ranged from 1.3 to 50% and 1.2 to 87.7%, respectively. Analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) locus suggested that the isolates collected from S. mombin and P. nigrum are most likely, which is a first for both hosts, represented by Armillaria camerunensis (Henn.) Volk ...

Therefore, to search for indole compounds with more efficacy and less side effect for cancer therapy, we developed a novel indole compound SK228 and examined its effects and mechanisms on antitumor growth and invasion inhibition in cell and tumor xenografts in nude mice models. SK228 significantly inhibited growth of different lung and esophageal cancer cell lines at sub-micromolar range, but not normal lung cells. SK228 induced DNA damages mainly by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in apoptosis. SK228 ...
UMass Amherst Research Tackles Major Highbush Blueberry Disease | Office of News & Media Relations | UMass Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. - As New Englands blueberry season approaches, University of Massachusetts Amherst doctoral candidate Matt Boyer says a fungal pathogen of highbush blueberries known as mummy berry is a common threat to growers, and if left untreated can destroy up to 50 percent of a crop. It is so named because it produces dead-looking, berry-shaped lumps instead of healthy berries.. Boyer, studying organismic and evolutionary biology and entomology, recently received a two-year, $79,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to identify the insect vectors that best spread the disease, and to study how variations in insect visitation can explain varying resistance levels among blueberry varieties.. He says, It would be quite valuable to know what insects are responsible for spreading it. There are quite a few other pathogens in the genus that affect other crops, so the problem goes beyond blueberries. The more we know about insect-vectored pathogens the better off we will be, because ...

Tom Volks Mycology Research
After I received my PhD in 1988, I moved to the Center for Forest Mycology Research at the Forest Products Lab in Madison, Wisconsin for a 6.5 year postdoc and temporary job with Dr. Hal Burdsall. There I worked on a variety of biosystematic and ecological studies of wood decay fungi, mostly in the Polyporaceae s.l., Corticiaceae s.l. and Agaricales, as well as root- and butt-rot fungi in those groups. I have continued to collaborate with other researchers there, including Dan Czederpiltz, since Madison is only a 2.5 hour drive fromLa Crosse. Current research programs there include the systematics, ecology and taxonomy in the genera Armillaria, Laetiporus, Bridgeoporus, Phlebia, and Phellinus, and also the study of ecology and pathogenesis of fungi in temperate and tropical ecosystems. I have also collaborated with CFMR personnel and with Dr. Karen Wikler on a project involving biodiversity of wood decay fungi of Israeli forests. In addition, the CFMR houses the worlds largest culture ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - ζ-/-thalassemic mice are affected by two modifying loci and display unanticipated somatic recombination leading to inherited variation. AU - Leder, Aya. AU - McMenamin, Jennifer. AU - Fontaine, Karen. AU - Bishop, Alexander. AU - Leder, Philip. PY - 2005/3/1. Y1 - 2005/3/1. N2 - Thalassemia is a disease caused by a variety of mutations affecting both the adult and embryonic α- and β-globin loci. A mouse strain carrying an embryonic ζ-globin gene disrupted by the insertion of a PGK-Neo cassette displays an α-thalassemia-like syndrome. Embryonic survival of this ζ-null mouse is variable and strongly influenced by genetic background, the 129/SvEv mouse strain displaying a more severe phenotype than C57BL/6. We have identified two modifying loci on C57BL/6 chromosomes 2 and 5, which affect the penetrance of embryonic lethality in the 129/SvEv mouse. Through this work, we were able to observe an interesting effect on somatic recombination events in thalassemic embryos. We show ...

A New Troodontid Theropod, Talos sampsoni gen. et sp. nov., from the Upper Cretaceous Western Interior Basin of North America
Background Troodontids are a predominantly small-bodied group of feathered theropod dinosaurs notable for their close evolutionary relationship with Avialae. Despite a diverse Asian representation with remarkable growth in recent years, the North American record of the clade remains poor, with only one controversial species-Troodon formosus-presently known from substantial skeletal remains. Methodology/Principal Findings Here we report a gracile new troodontid theropod-Talos sampsoni gen. et sp. nov.-from the Upper Cretaceous Kaiparowits Formation, Utah, USA, representing one of the most complete troodontid skeletons described from North America to date. Histological assessment of the holotype specimen indicates that the adult body size of Talos was notably smaller than that of the contemporary genus Troodon. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Talos as a member of a derived, latest Cretaceous subclade, minimally containing Troodon, Saurornithoides, and Zanabazar. MicroCT scans reveal extreme pathological

Parisi Archives - Trentino Genealogy | Family History for Trentini Descendants
Now, lets cross the ocean and go back to the patria to have a look at cemeteries in Trentino (or anywhere in Italy).. One of the first things people comment on when they visit an Italian cemetery for the first time is the practice of putting photographs of the deceased on the gravestones. This can be an exciting discovery for the family historian, as they can finally put faces to some of the names they have been researching.. But once they get over that novelty, the next thing they notice - often with some amount of confusion and disappointment - is the ABSENCE of old gravestones. I mean, some of these parish churches go back over 700 years or more; surely we are going to find plenty of fascinating, ancient gravestones in their cemeteries, right?. Well…no.. Yes, you are likely to find old tombs of priests and patron families inside the church dating back many centuries, and you might also find a few older headstones for priests or patrons (perhaps from the 18th century) affixed to the outer ...

FOSS4G 2010: Selected Presentations: A FOSS4G MODEL TO ESTIMATE FOREST EXPLOITATION METHODS AND BIOMASS AVAILABILITY FOR...
The current approach to the satisfaction of energy needs envisions a mix of renewable energy sources. In a forest rich region, such as the Italian alpine area, one of the main renewable energy source is the wood biomass available in its forests.. The BIOMASFOR project aims to evaluate the amount of this resource in the Trentino region (Italy) and, more important, to asses which part of biomass is actually exploitable, given its quality and the energy needed to move it to the facilities where it is used.. Therefore, a model based on the FOSS4G framework to estimate biomass availability for energy production in an alpine area has been developed.. A considerable amount of data regarding forest management is available in Trentino, but a reliable evaluation of biomass availability must take into account the local management of forest resources and the actual possibility to reach the forest parcels, depending on infrastructures and terrain morphology. The model combines the morphological ...

A few days ago the Science Day took place in Bolzano/Bozen at EURAC. The Science Day is a type of fair where projects, proposals and ideas for teaching science in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen were presented. The ORTLER project was presented as well and we were able to see close up how much has been happening around this project so far. We will soon publish new posts including pictures and reports about the work currently going on in all participating schools.. Today we have the honour of publishing an interview with Dr. Paolo Gabrielli, a researcher from the Trentino region in Italy, who is also the scientific coordinator of the project. He was able to answer to some of our questions shortly before returning to work at the Byrd Polar Centre of the Ohio State University of Columbus (USA).. Paolo, you are shortly due to go back to the USA. Four ice cores, three of them reaching down to the rock underneath the glacier, were extracted. Were you expecting such a result a few months ...

Ensure that the compost pile retains a moisture content similar to a wrung-out sponge. To moisten, add green waste; to reduce moisture, add brown waste.. Turn compost to get air to the aerobic bacteria and speed the process. Wear gloves and a dust mask to protect against allergens.. Decay generates heat, so a pile should feel warm. If not, add green waste. Decomposition occurs most efficiently when its 104 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit inside the pile; use a compost thermometer.. Keep a small container in the kitchen to easily collect green food scraps. Store it in the freezer to keep unpleasant smells and flies at bay.. The best time to start composting is during warmer months. Alternately layering green and brown waste, using the lasagna method in colder months, readies the pile to decompose as soon as the weather warms. Consider stockpiling summer yard waste ingredients.. Be aware that low-maintenance composting wont kill weed seeds, which can then get spread around the garden. A highly ...

Blueberry aphid
Symptoms of BIScV vary largely according to virus strains and host type. Some plant varieties may show severe blossom blight, leaf blight and twig dieback, while others may not show any symptoms. However, all highbush blueberry varieties appear to be susceptible.. Other signs of BIScV infection can include red line patterns on leaves, yellowing of leaf margins, leaf mottling, overall pale colour, low number of blossoms, or even a twiggy appearance.. It may take up to two years after initial infection before symptoms start to develop.. Symptoms of BIScV may be confused with bacterial or fungal diseases, frost injury or nutrition deficiency and therefore testing is required to confidently identify the virus. ...
Saurian: October 2011
Just when Alamosaurus appeared in the Late Cretaceous is still subject to debate but it seems that titanosaurs appeared during the Campanian around 73 million years ago although their exact point of origin remains undetermined. Suggestions include a possible migration from South America to the north due to the appearance of a land bridge between the continents. This may have been due to climate change since the Western Interior Seaway was also receding at this time and this may have created the ideal conditions for the migration and establishment of a relatively localised population of sauropods. Another possible titanosauriform doorway into North America may have been via Asia but this appears to lack any substantial fossil evidence at this moment in time ...
HOPLOPARIA ALBERTAENSIS, A NEW SPECIES OF CLAWED LOBSTER (NEPHROPIDAE) FROM THE LATE CONIACIAN, SHALLOW-MARINE BAD HEART...
A new species of clawed lobster, Hoploparia albertaensis, is reported from the late Coniacian, shallow-marine Bad Heart Formation of northwestern Alberta, Canada. Hoploparia is a well-known, clawed lobster genus with a record extending from Early Cretaceous (Valanginian) to Miocene. Fifty-one species of Hoploparia are known worldwide; 13 from the North American Western Interior Seaway. None of the 12 other Interior Seaway species, of any age, closely resembles the new species. The new species strongly resembles Hoploparia gabbiPilsbry, 1901 from the upper Santonian-lower Campanian of the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain. ...
Padre Efrem - CIRCOLO TRENTINO DI SAN FRANCISCO
Back to Padre Efrem. As he remembers Tropea, a huge smile appears and he says bellissimo (most beautiful) in his own words Ciho ancora il mio cuore a Tropea. My heart is still in Tropea. While in Tropea he taught at the convent and in his spare time he went to help a priest who had started charitable work they called Susha. He essentially worked the streets of Tropea helping the very poor and destitute. So I asked him why he left. He told me that there was a mission going to China following the assassination of a Franciscan priest there, and his friends and fellow friars from Trento urged him to go with them. He felt obligated to leave. When he left Tropea he remembered that they had to stop the train for about 15 minutes because so many people had turned up to say goodbye and wish him well. He was very sad to leave this beautiful place and these wonderful people. Through my friend Emilio who knows many people in Tropea, I tried to find out if there was anyone who still remembered Padre ...
5 Good Reasons to Eat More Blueberries
In a Newsweek article from June 17, 2002, neuroscientist James Joseph, of Tufts University, made it clear that when it comes to brain protection, theres nothing quite like blueberries, which he calls the brain berry. Dr. Joseph attributes the blueberrys health benefits to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, and sees its potential for reversing short-term memory loss and forestalling many other effects of aging.. 4. Modern Blueberry Production. Today, the most common variety of blueberry sold in the supermarkets are the highbush or cultivated blueberries, which grow on tree-sized shrubs that can get as high as fifteen feet tall. The lowbush, or wild blueberries, grow on small, ankle-high shrubs (only about one foot tall) and are about one-third the size of the cultivated blueberries. The wild blueberries are preferred by people who like the tangy, complex flavor of sweet and sour. The wild blueberries are from a different species than cultivated blueberries, but are part of ...

Difference between revisions of Elevage de Mouches Soldats Noires/en - Low-tech Lab
The larvae will feed mainly on low-fibrous waste (overripe fruit, vegetables, some leaves such as cabbage, etc.), so it is not necessary to put green waste (leaves, branches, grass). Similarly, thick fruit skins (banana, orange, lemon...) or pits will not be completely degraded. However, they will scrape off all the food available and it may be interesting to put them on, it will just not reduce the volume of waste. It is also possible to give them animal or human faeces (droppings, dry toilets...). As larvae naturally destroy bacteria such as salmonella [1], it seems possible to feed them to animals without risk of transmission. The optimal substrate conditions for larvae can be summarized as follows: - Depth: About ten centimeters. If there is more, the larvae will bury deeper and may not emerge. If there are fewer of them, they wont be able to bury themselves properly. Nutrients: Protein-rich substrates and readily available hydrocarbons ensure good larval growth. - Food aspect : The larvae ...

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) has long been consumed for its unique flavor and composition of health-promoting phytonutrients, however, breeding efforts to improve fruit quality in blueberry have been greatly hampered by the lack of adequate genomic resources. The genome of highbush blueberry has been particularly challenging to assemble in large part to its polyploid nature and genome size. Here, we present a chromosome-scale and haplotype-phased genome assembly of the cultivar Draper, which has the highest antioxidant levels among a diversity panel of seventyone cultivars and thirteen wild Vaccinium species. We leveraged this genome, combined with gene expression and metabolite data measured across fruit development, to identify genes involved in the biosynthesis of important phytonutrients among other metabolites associated with superior fruit quality. Genome-wide analyses revealed that both polyploidy and tandem gene duplications modified various pathways involved in the ...
background summary
Estuarine scrub-shrub wetlands (E2SS) are much less extensive than estuarine emergent wetlands. Representative plant species, which generally occur in irregularly flooded zones (E2SS1P) between emergent wetland communities and upland habitats, include Iva frutescens, Baccharis halimifolia, Sesbania drummondii, and Tamarix gallica.. Classes were mixed in complex areas where individual classes could not be separated. The most commonly used combinations include the estuarine emergent class (E2EM) and unconsolidated shore (E2US), for example, E2EM1P/USP. The estuarine emergent and unconsolidated shore combination was most frequently used on Galveston and Follets Islands where intertidal sand flats were juxtaposed with patches of salt-marsh vegetation. Vegetation commonly found in these areas include Monanthochole littoralis, Salicornia spp., Batis maritime, and Suaeda linearis.. The estuarine system extends upstream or landward to the point where ocean-derived salts are less than 0.5 parts per ...
Lucius Verus - Wikipedia
In 165, Roman forces, perhaps led by Martius Verus and the V Macedonica, moved on Mesopotamia. Edessa was re-occupied, Mannus re-installed.[136] His coinage resumed, too: Manu the king (Syriac: MNW MLK) or Antonine dynasts on the obverse, and King Mannos, friend of Romans (Greek: Basileus Mannos Philorōmaios) on the reverse.[130] The Parthians retreated to Nisibis, but this too was besieged and captured. The Parthian army dispersed in the Tigris; their general Chosrhoes swam down the river and made his hideout in a cave.[137] A second force, under Avidius Cassius and the III Gallica, moved down the Euphrates, and fought a major battle at Dura.[138] By the end of the year, Cassius army had reached the twin metropolises of Mesopotamia: Seleucia on the right bank of the Tigris and Ctesiphon on the left. Ctesiphon was taken and its royal palace set to flame. The citizens of Seleucia, still largely Greek (the city had been commissioned and settled as a capital of the Seleucid empire, one of ...

Spatial variations in airborne microorganism and endotoxin concentrations at green waste composting facilities
The emission and dispersal of bioaerosols from open-air commercial composting facilities continues to be contentious. A meta-dataset enumerating cultivable microorganism emission and downwind concentrations is not yet available. A dataset derived from repeated and replicated field studies over a period of two years at two commercial composting facilities is presented. The data characterises patterns in Aspergillus fumigatus, actinomycetes, Gram-negative bacteria and endotoxin emission and downwind concentrations. For all bioaerosols, compost agitation activities had a significant impact on concentrations; levels were variable up to 600. m downwind from site. Bioaerosols declined rapidly from source and exhibited a secondary peak 100-150. m from site boundary. All bioaerosols were found downwind from site in elevated concentrations. Compared to those found 100. m upwind, levels were significantly higher at 180. m downwind for A. fumigatus; at 300-400. m for actinomycetes and Gram negative ...
Last week was eggs. This week is flowers.
While the warm season grasses rise above last years stubble and the trees are beginning to leaf out in earnest, all of the ground layer of plants are grabbing sunshine while they can. The meadow is sporting blue eyed grass (Sisyrhinchium), violets, pussytoes (Antennaria), and wild strawberries (Fragaria). The cool season Junegrass (Koeleria) is already spreading its pollen, along with all the Carexes. In the woods, the violets are joined by a delicate carpet of bellwort (Uvularia).. The redbuds are wrapping up; as hot and dry as it has been, those flowers wont last much longer. The dogwoods are well into their season. Im hopeful well get some of the rain forecast for the coming week, or these wont last long, either. The highbush blueberries have only just gotten started. I dont think the groundcover blueberries have opened yet.. In the greenhouse, Ive transplanted the peppers into larger pots. It may be hot, but I dont trust that we wont have a sudden cold snap, and these plants take a ...

Abstract: RANGES OF VARIABILITY IN MARINE MOLLUSKS FROM GREENHOUSE AND ICEHOUSE CLIMATIC REGIMES: PLIO-PLEISTOCENE OF...
Understanding connections between physical environment and evolutionary pattern involves documenting the relationships between evolutionary tempo, phenotypic variability, and environmental variability. Different theories, however, make different predictions about these relationships, and various studies have produced a range of results. We compare evolutionary tempo and mode in marine mollusks from the Late Cretaceous representative of a greenhouse climate regime, which was climatically relatively stable (i.e., less frequently/rapidly changing) and the Late Neogene representative of a climatically less stable icehouse climate regime. We examined species of the bivalve family Cardiidae and the gastropod family Turritellidae from the Late Cretaceous of the North American Western Interior Seaway (WIS) and Gulf Coastal Plain, and the Plio-Pleistocene of southern Florida. We studied two species of turritellids from the Cretaceous (Turritella kansasensis, T. codellana) and two from the Neogene (T. ...
Written In Stone...seen through my lens: September 2014
Today, the Monument is elevated two kilometers along with that of the Colorado Plateau, but throughout the Paleozoic much of western Laurentia (the cratonic core of the supercontinent of Pangaea) was situated at sea level. Beginning in the latest Proterozoic and throughout most of the ensuing Paleozoic, an ocean called the Panthalassic (Paleo-Pacific) lapped onto the continents western margin, leaving limestone deposits now deeply buried below the Monument. In the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic, marine waters returned as the Western Interior Seaway - only this time inland and following Pangaeas disassembly in the Mesozoic. Like the Panthalassic (that became the Pacific Ocean), the Seaway left its mark in the form of sedimentary deposits preserved on the Great Plains and the Colorado Plateau. In the Tertiary, the Colorado Plateau and the Rocky Mountains were uplifted, casting the sea from the continents craton and stripping off much of the seas depositional legacy from the Plateau. ...
biodivcanada.ca - Technical Thematic Report No. 18. - Inland colonial waterbird and marsh bird trends for Canada
The aim of this report is to present data on the trends in population numbers and other vital statistics for inland colonial waterbirds and marsh birds in Canadas 16 terrestrial ecozones+. The data were solicited from members of the Inland Colonial Waterbird and Marsh Bird Chapter of the Canadian Waterbird Technical Committee and other waterbird biologists from across the country. There were surprisingly few long-term datasets identified, particularly for some ecozones+. Some ecozones+ had no data (Taiga Cordillera, Taiga Shield, and Hudson Plains), some had historical data but no current data (Boreal Cordillera, Western Interior Basin, Montane Cordillera, and Prairies), some had data awaiting analysis, and some had recent but no historical data. Nine ecozones+ had one or more dataset of five or more years that was used to give preliminary data; some had much more data than others.

Shell to invest in Rotterdam green methanol plant | Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com
The methanol to be produced is called green because the waste that is delivered is recycled in this process instead of burned. The waste - low-grade plastic and adhering green waste - is converted into syngas made of carbon (CO) and hydrogen (H2) and then into methanol. Normally methanol is made from natural gas and contributes to the emission of CO2. The total CO2 emissions are at least 65% lower than with fossil methanol. Air Liquide and Nouryon deliver the necessary raw materials, respectively oxygen and partly green hydrogen.. The planned factory converts 360,000 tons of waste - a waste stream of more than 700,000 households - into 220,000 tons of methanol every year. It is the first factory in Europe to produce chemicals and biofuels from non-recyclable waste. This is the first step towards a larger scale of methanol production, says Waas. Factories for fossil methanol are four to five times as large.. ...

Maximum throughput is one of the distinguishing features of this machine. The material is moved by a scraper floor and the infeed roller, which are controlled using an electrohydraulic unit in line with the systems loading. By doing so, engine output is optimally utilized continually. Scraper floor and infeed roller are powered separately, which in turn improves material intake and equalization.. Another factor ensuring the AK 565s ability to deliver outstanding performance is the modified main drive, which not only fulfills the latest EU Stage V emissions standards but also provides at the same time a consistently higher torque (plus 140 Nm) over its predecessor. The heart of the machine is its heavy belt-driven flail drum, which rotates 1,000 rpm and is equipped as standard with high-quality Plus flail tips.. Doppstadts AK 565 can be used universally for a very broad range of materials, e.g. to shred green waste, garden and park waste, bio-waste, pre-shredded tree trunks, roots, waste ...

electrical - How can I stop this GFCI receptacle from tripping? - Home Improvement Stack Exchange
It sounds like your normal outlet is wired to the GFCI, making it a protected outlet.. Turn the power off, and remove the GFCI. You should see Black and White wires connected to the LINE Terminals, and another pair Connected to the LOAD Terminals. Devices with motors can trip GFCI outlets due to inductive loads at start up or shutdown.. Get yourself some spare wire. If you dont have any, buy a foot of 14/2 household wire from the local Orange or Blue Big Box Store. Also pick up some wire nuts rated for 3 14 ga wires.. Youll need to cut 4-6 inch white and black jumper wires and strip the ends.. Disconnect all wires from the GFCI, and screw in the LOAD screws all the way. I like to tape them off with electrical tape.. Attach one end to the LINE Terminals, matching white to white and black to black. (Brass screw is black, Metal screw is white. Green screw is ground (green or bare).. Now wire the three white wires together with a wire nut. Similarly, wire the blacks. These are called ...

Brevet US4556636 - Composition, analytical element and method for the detection of bacteria - Google Brevets
A composition, an analytical element and a method for the detection of bacteria in specimen samples, e.g. biological fluids, are disclosed. The composition optionally, but preferably, comprises a metabolizable substrate (e.g. glucose) and a benzindole dye which undergoes a detectable color change when incubated in admixture with a bacterial microorganism. Useful dyes include particular benz[cd]indole, benz[e]indole and benz[g]indole compounds. The described analytical element contains this composition, preferably, in a spreading zone. Detection of bacteria can be accomplished by bringing the composition or element into contact with a specimen sample. This invention is particularly useful in detection of significant bacteriuria.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of death from cancer overall. Mutations in the K-ras oncogene are the most frequently observed mutations in CRC. Activation of receptor tyrosine kinases, including Met, is also common in CRC. Co-activation of both Met and K-Ras could result in preferential over-activation of specific downstream cascade(s). To address the potential importance of Met and K-Ras tandem activation, we use the DLD1 CRC cell line model. DLD1 cells contain one mutated K-ras allele, resulting in a constitutively active protein. These cells express a relatively low level of Met. A derivative of this cell line, DKO4, has its mutant K-ras allele inactivated by somatic recombination. Our lab has previously shown that overexpression of Met in DLD1 cells (DLD1-Met) enhances the tumorigenicity and metastatic potential of these cells. This did not occur in DKO4-Met cells, suggesting that activated K-Ras is necessary for these Met-mediated processes. We hypothesize ...
