In the example illustrated in FIG. 9, five stars are displayed, and the color of the Nth star from the left is changed when the Nth star from the left has been selected (e.g., the Nth star from the left has been selected by moving a cursor using a physical button) to notify the user that N points have been selected as the points given to the image. When the user has determined to select the Nth star from the left (e.g., by pressing an OK button (physical button)), the rating information that indicates the N points is sent to the server system 300. In this case, the rating process performed by the server system 300 in the step S205 calculates the sum, the average value, or the like of the points indicated by the rating information sent from ...

The paper presents the development of an agent-based approach to modelling the interaction of human emotion and behaviour with built spaces. The study addresses how human behaviour and social relation can be represented and modelled to interact with a virtual built environment composed in parametric architectural geometry. KOALA, a prototype of agent-based modelling of social spatial dynamics at the core of a parametric architectural design environment is proposed. In building KOALAs system architecture, we adapted the PECS (Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, Social) reference model of human behaviour (Schmidt 2002) and introduced the concept of Social Spatial Comfort as a measurement of three key factors influencing human spatial experiences. KOALA was evaluated by a comparative modelling of two contrasting Vietnamese dwellings known to us. As expected, KOALA returns very different temporal characteristics of spatial modifications of the two dwellings over a simulated timeframe of one year. We ...

Passive cooling is a building design approach that focuses on heat gain control and heat dissipation in a building in order to improve the indoor thermal comfort with low or no energy consumption. This approach works either by preventing heat from entering the interior (heat gain prevention) or by removing heat from the building (natural cooling). Natural cooling utilizes on-site energy, available from the natural environment, combined with the architectural design of building components (e.g. building envelope), rather than mechanical systems to dissipate heat. Therefore, natural cooling depends not only on the architectural design of the building but on how the sites natural resources are used as heat sinks (i.e. everything that absorbs or dissipates heat). Examples of on-site heat sinks are the upper atmosphere (night sky), the outdoor air (wind), and the earth/soil. Passive cooling covers all natural processes and techniques of heat dissipation and modulation without the use of energy. Some ...
This paper analyses responses of ninety-nine students to a design brief for a public building in different regions of China. The research determined the level of understanding and skills development in students who will be the next generation of building designers, procurers and developers. The students were asked to design in a bioclimatic fashion and therefore to consider the building to be as free running as possible, and thus supportive of adaptive comfort principles. The designed solutions were then analysed to determine: the types of bioclimatic technique chosen to be employed; the actual prevalence of use of the techniques in each case; and the successful implementation within the schemes. The results identify barriers to application in design and define productive areas of future comfort research including analysis of interactions between techniques, and the optimisation of whole building solutions. The adoption of bioclimatic design techniques is complementary to adaptive approaches to ...

Now that your germophobic senses have been stirred - you might be glad to learn that researchers from University of Oregon have conducted an analysis that could lead to healthier building designs that foster a favorable indoor bacterial community.. Published in the open access journal PLOS ONE, the study is based on the analysis of DNA from over 30,000 different types of bacteria throughout the Lillis Business Complex at UO. The researchers found that location, connectedness, and human use patterns in a building may affect the types of bacteria that it hosts.. In this field study, six prototype houses of southeast Asian design were built in in the village of Magoda in Muheza District, Tanga Region, Tanzania, and compared with modified and unmodified, traditional, sub-Saharan African houses. Prototype houses were built with walls made of lightweight permeable materials (bamboo, shade net, or timber) with bedrooms elevated from the ground and with screened windows. Modified and unmodified traditional African houses, wattle-daub or mud-block constructions, built on the ground with poor ventilation served as controls. In the modified houses, major structural problems such as leaking roofs were repaired, windows screened, open eaves blocked with bricks and mortar, cement floors repaired or constructed, and rain gutters and a tank for water storage added. Prototype houses were randomly allocated to village households through a free, fair, and transparent lottery. The lottery tickets were deposited in a bucket made of transparent plastic. Each participant ...

IMAGINE a neighbourhood lit with flickering candlelights and the only sounds heard are people conversing with each other.. I know, there has been much talk about Earth Hour in the media but for those who are not in the know, Earth Hour is all about minimising electricity usage.. Since 2007, this campaign has been held on the last Saturday of March and at 8.30pm local time.. Started by WWF and the Sydney Morning Herald, it is all about households and businesses turning off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for an hour.. With this step, they hope to create and raise awareness on the need to take action over global climate changes.. It is such a small thing to do for an individual, a little more of an effort for a corporation but brings a huge benefit to our planet Earth.. Last year, over 400 cities participated in this campaign and they are looking at over 1,000 cities this year. Some reports have said that a city can save up to 13 per cent of electricity usage in an evening of the ...

Download pdf). The existing care infrastructure in Flanders suffers from serious architectural and spatial neglect. But this is not just a question of delayed maintenance and outdated spatial design. Even in recent building programmes, the architectural quality of care institutions turns out to be subordinate to technical care considerations vis-à-vis construction, finances and care. This is notable considering that the building programme in the care sector is massively supported by public funds and therefore offers opportunities for extensive supervision of architectural and spatial quality. It is even more remarkable when you think that the architectural and spatial environment of a hospital have a direct impact on the patients healing process, in both a positive and a negative sense.(1). Hospital rationale. A care architecture that is worthy of the name seems to be made almost impossible by the narrow bandwidth in which the design and construction process for care institutions takes place. ...

Financial Challenge. Efficient projection of traffic volumes is a cornerstone of any transport infrastructure project. As experience shows, it is especially important to use projection models optimal for each type of transportation. The projections are based on external parameters, for instance, electricity price dynamics and altering control and security regulations, and the transportation industrys ones, among them altering tariffs.. Naturally, every scenario requires a thorough analysis. It is also necessary to keep in mind the impact of every interested party - rivals, the authorities, the population and so on. Economic cost modeling quantifies main parameters of possible scenarios.. Travel time seems to be the major factor, which determines the potential traffic volume. The current traffic volume in other means of transportation and a possibility of rapider traffic have to be taken into consideration in travel time estimates.. Models of traffic volumes depending on the means of ...
Porto, Portugals second-largest city with a population of 1.2 million, has suffered for many years from an inadequate public transport system. As a major business and commercial centre it was suffering from the noise and oppression of traffic-choked streets and exhaust fumes.. The traditional tramway network, still operating with early 20th century vehicles, was all but worn out and closed. The city decided on the radical new approach of constructing a whole new light rail network, the largest complete transportation system currently under construction in Europe. It has cost €1.3 billion to install, and the first section opened four months ahead of schedule on 7 December 2002.. THE PROJECT. The first plans to modernise Portos transport infrastructure were formulated in the mid-1990s with the intention of reducing pressure on the citys streets and providing fixed links to neighbouring towns and villages. The decision was finally taken to create a 70km (43.5-mile) light rail network to open ...

Can the greatness of a city be quantified? The city of Nineveh, capital of the Neo-Assyrian empire of 911-627 BC, was once described as an exceedingly great city, three days journey in breadth [1]. Today, a city described as such would more likely be dismissed as an urban sprawl let down by an inefficient transport infrastructure. Without reference to travelling-time constraints, size is clearly not a sufficient measure of greatness-just like rank and title can be poor predictors of influence in social networks [2,3]. Of the many candidates [4,5], the simplest objective measure of success is, possibly, the extent to which a city fulfils its primary purpose of maximizing the number of face-to-face, opportunity-spawning, interactions between its inhabitants [6]. From the rise of the Medici in fifteenth century Florence to the prestige of an efficient transport system in a twenty-first century metropolis, this connectivity is synonymous with both the eminence of individuals and the success of ...
The Government of India felt the need for a permanent agency to expedite the publication of standards and development of test facilities[214] in parallel with the work of the preparation of the standards - as the development of improved safety critical parts could be undertaken only after the publication of the standard and commissioning of test facilities. The Ministry of Surface Transport (MoST) constituted a permanent Automotive Industry Standards Committee (AISC) . The Standards prepared by AISC will be approved by the permanent CMVR Technical Standing Committee (CTSC). After approval, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) [215] will publish this standard. Communications routes and other anthropogenic barriersfor animals populations functioning. Each species requires certain amount of suitable habitat to fulfill its life needs. There are natural barriers for spreading the animals populations. For last 200 years anthropogenic changes of environment create another serious barriers. The main results of man activities can be degradation and habitat loss, creation of linear structures as roads and railways that divide animal populations. The lack of gene flow may lead to changes within isolated populations ending even with extinction. Transport infrastructure influences on the animals ability of migration. Directly it can cause deaths on road, habitat changes and indirectly lack of population connectivity, habitat fragmentation, pollution, increased human pressure. To avoid above the proper passages according to size and behavior of animal should be created.
Roads, Internal Migration and the Spatial Sorting of US High-Skilled Workers (most recent version: November 2019).. Investments in transport infrastructure have persistent effects on the spatial allocation of economic activity. This paper asks whether these effects are heterogeneous across skill groups. I exploit the advent of the US Interstate Highway System to answer this question. Using an instrumental variable that builds on the networks geographic orientation and the timing of construction, I find that the share of college graduates in metropolitan areas increased by 0.5 percentage points with each new highway. To estimate the corresponding welfare effects, this paper extends a static quantitative spatial model to incorporate heterogeneous workers with different migration elasticities and mobility costs. A removal of the interstate network would lead to a decline in welfare of 13% for college graduates and 12% for non-graduates. The incidence on graduates is greater because they are ...

The Busways Group has always taken a proactive approach to public transport planning. This ensures that the new residential and industrial developments are built to permit the early provision of bus services. By maintaining a close relationship with State and Local governments, Busways has successfully contributed to planning policies which foster efficient public transport.. A prime example of this approach was Busways close association with the planning and design of the $25 million bus/rail interchange at Blacktown opening in 1995. This modern facility gave Blacktown commuters an excellent example of integrated public transport infrastructure, ready for the continuing expansion of the North West Sector.. Other bus/rail interchanges with which Busways staff has been vitally involved are those at Campbelltown, Mt Druitt, Woy Woy, Gosford and Wyong. As the prime operator of buses at each of these locations, Busways believes that modern facilities where passengers can transfer easily between bus ...

Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting of the Presidential Council for Strategic Development and Priority Projects. Participants discussed support measures for small businesses and comprehensive development of the transport infrastructure.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the massive decision on whether to go ahead with HS2 needs to be fact-based.. He told Sky News his approach to HS2 was relatively neutral.. I asked Doug Oakervee to do that report and said to him give me the facts, give me the data, give us the information so we can make a proper informed decision.. Ive always approached this from a relatively neutral point of view and that information will help to inform a decision that is best for the whole country.. He said the decision would be made very soon.. Conservative MP for Beaconsfield Joy Morrissey said the whole project should be scrapped and the money spent on investment in the north.. Wed like to see money invested in transport infrastructure in our constituency, we want to see our roads paved and potholes filled... lets spend the money wisely.. The £106bn could be used... to make sure the northern cities have the transport that they need, Ms Morrisey said.. However, even if the entire ...

After a sharp slowdown in 2019, the Thai economy is likely to rebound only modestly in 2020, remaining below its potential level of growth. Exports (65% of GDP), which are being hurt by the strong baht, will also continue to be affected by the global slowdown, particularly among the countrys main partners (China, the United States, the Eurozone), given Thailands integration in value chains. As a result, the manufacturing sector will continue to see unfavourable momentum, particularly in the electronics, chemical and automotive industries. In spite of the unsupportive international economic situation, resilient domestic demand should enable growth to remain robust. Public investment will increase, with the launch of several transport infrastructure projects linked to the Eastern Economic Corridor initiative, a development plan to create a vast industrial and technological cluster in a region south-east of Bangkok. In addition, the government decided to relax its tax policy in late summer 2019,
Title: Energy input and relaxation in atmospheric pressure CO2 plasmas Objectives: Greenhouse gas conversion has become one of the major scientific and technological challenges nowadays. An efficient storage of energy in chemical compounds produced from CO2 emissions, in particular in hydrocarbon-based fuels which could be straightforwardly integrated into the existing transport infrastructure, would be extremely interesting from the environmental, economical and societal points of view. In the last few years, the "indirect route" to CO2 dissociation by non-equilibrium plasmas, involving an enhancement of dissociation through the input of energy from the electrons into the vibrational degrees of freedom of the molecule, has been systematically studied. Preliminary results suggest that low-pressure plasmas seem to favor non-equilibrium and vibrational energy up-pumping. However, atmospheric pressure operation is better suited for industrial application. The aim of this work is to investigate the ...

Transport infrastructure impacts not only the daily commute of millions of workers but living standards, productivity and economic growth as well.
Downloadable (with restrictions)! This paper uses data from the Indonesian manufacturing census in order to uncover the determinants of firm exports over the period 1990-2005. We examine to what extent differences in firm export propensity and intensity are a consequence of firm-level (microeconomic), of place-based (macroeconomic) first- and second-nature geography characteristics, or of a combination of the two. The results indicate that both internal and external factors matter. Second-nature, rather than first-nature, geography makes an important difference. The conditions of a firms province and those of neighboring provinces shape firm exports. Agglomeration effects, education and transport infrastructure endowment play a particularly relevant role in Indonesian firms export propensity, while export spillovers increase export intensity.
While some powerful European Union governments are uneasy about China possibly capturing control of the blocs critical energy and transport infrastructure, one of western Europes smallest economies is grabbing the opportunity with both hands.

Among the one hundred twelve species planted in the study areas,in the Philippines, fire tree is the most abundant, followed by ipil-ipil, narra, mahogany, coconut, cypress and McArthur palm. These species are often viewed in municipal parks, provincial parks, streets, roadsides, school campuses and hospitals. As to the defects/abnormalities of the species surveyed, common are those done by man using sharp instruments. This was found mostly in parks and school campuses. Other mechanical injuries are typhoon injury, root exposure, cavities, electrical interference and trunk injury. Natural defects observed are caused by insect, rust and spots, gas poisoning, bulges and nutrient deficiency. Both mechanical and natural defects are prevalent on the trunk and crown portions of a tree. With regards to planting, the surrounding where the plant is to be planted should be cleared of all kinds of vegetation. The type of soil should also be noted as it is this factor that the plant will primarily depend on ...

Description. This class focuses on representation tools used by architects during the design process and attempts to discuss the relationship they develop with the object of design. Representation plays a key role in architectural design, not only as a medium of conveying and narrating a determined meaning or a preconceived idea, but also as a code of creating new meaning, while the medium seeks to establish a relationship with itself. In this sense, mediums of representation, as external parameters to the design process, are not neutral tools of translating an idea into its concrete form. They are neither authentic means of creativity, nor vapid carriers of an idea. Therefore, an important aspect in issues of meaning is how the architect manipulates the play of translating a concept to its concrete ve This class focuses on representation tools used by architects during the design process and attempts to discuss the relationship they develop with the object of design. Computer processing methods and/or systems for minimizing and/or optimizing data strings in accordance with rules and options. Minimized data strings can represent data sequences important in certain biologic analyses and/or syntheses. In specific embodiments, a request is generated by a user at a client system and received by a server system. The server system accesses initial data indicated or provided by the client system. The server system then performs an analysis to minimize the data needed for further reactions. In specific embodiments, a server can use proprietary methods or data at the server side while protecting those proprietary methods and data from access by the client system.

Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 14:46:09 -0500 From: Gaspar James M ,jmg7730 at usl.edu, Subject: Brewing Questionnaire Author Responds I am responding to the criticisms of my brewing questionnaire that I believe stem from a lack of understanding of the architectural design process. The origin of an architectural thesis is an idea, a point of view, a passion. This nugget is then developed into a thesis topic, not a building type. It is at this point in the design process that thesis research truly begins, the topic being the lens through which the research is focused. For architecture to be successful it must take into consideration a multitude of variables, one of most important being the people who will actually use the building. Without an understanding of the potential users, a building is nothing more than a shell, void of the richness and celebration that is necessary to architecture. Unfortunately, our world is filled with shells. The vast majority of projects that architects are hired to design ...
The International Conference on Structures and Architecture, ICSA 2010, will be held in Guimarães (Portugal), from the 21-23 July 2010.. I will be presenting in the event, together with Eng. Iago González Quelle, the lecture "Tensile Structures. Interdisciplinary Teamwork as win-win Situation ".. We will be sharing our professional experience together and highlight the importance and benefits of a cross-disciplinary collaboration between architects and engineers in the design of tensile structures. In effect, one of the most distinctive aspects of tensile architecture is that architectural design and structural engineering are intrinsically engaged from the earliest phase of the planning process. This alliance affects significantly the aesthetic qualities of the project.. We will also addresses the potential of parametric design in the field of membrane architecture.. The conference will focus on the recent developments in the construction field and intends to stimulate and promote ...

Mechanical, Electrical & Architectural Design. What is Building Engineering?. A building can be likened to a human body - the human body has a skin (preferably without leaks!) and so does a building, both using skin to regulate temperature. The body has a heart which pumps blood and heat around the body, similiar to a heating system in a building; a respiratory system that takes in fresh air and exhales stale air just like an air-conditioning system and a brain that acts as a control centre for all these systems. And just like the human body, a building has a brain - the Building Engineer - whose job it is to ensure that the building is a pleasant and productive place for the people that occupy it.. Do you know that the buildings in which we spend 90 % of our time are responsible for 50% of our national energy consumption? This is a major contributor to Irelands C02 or greenhouse gas emissions. By taking steps to improve the efficiency of our buildings, we can significantly affect our ability ...
I am graduated in Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Vila Velha, in Espírito Santo, Brazil in earlier 2013. During my studies, I awoke special interest in disciplines dealing with energy performance and environmental quality, what made me also interesting to investigate more about the development of new constructions technologies, and tools in order to facilitate and enable the technological advancement of the design and building performance, this interest was also a result of my thesis, where I developed a research center, involving the concepts of innovation, performance and building technology. During my academic journey, I joined the Core of studies and practices of Architecture and Urban Plans, Civil Engineering and product design, where I had the chance to research about construction technologies, integrating the architectural design with economic and environmental issues and structural concept process in research projects. I was able to investigate about structural ...
