In a recent post on Tech Radar, technology writer Cameron Faulkner reflected on the importance of accessibility features in ensuring people with different types of disabilities can use technology. Touch interfaces and voice-activated devices have allowed many people to use devices and technologies hitherto unavailable/inaccessible to them. After watching a student who was blind activate the accessibility features on a tablet computer, Faulkner wrote, "this tablets usefulness had grown exponentially for her with just a few quick adjustments. It was an awe-inspiring experience wherein that moment, I realized that it isnt just a luxury item with which people can waste time reading, playing games and watching movies. For some people, these settings allow them to do things that would otherwise be impossible." Nevertheless, Faulkner reminds us there is still a long way to go to ensure accessibility for all. Rather than designing accessibility features as an afterthought, technology companies and ...

We worked with a research librarian to obtain guidance on scoping reviews, database choices, and development of search strings. Databases searched for this study were PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. RefWorks bibliographic software provided the platform for data storage and review. The combination of key words and MeSH terms identified for the search were as follows: Alzheimers disease, home modifications, housing for the elderly, architectural accessibility, environment design, aging in place, assistive technology, and adaptive equipment. Inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed, English-language scientific literature published between January 1994 and July 2014, specific to people with AD, and specific to the home environment. Articles were excluded if they were pharmacological intervention or animal studies or involved dementias that can be definitively diagnosed, such as Lewy body dementia, frontal lobe dementia, Parkinsons dementia, and vascular dementia. Especially during the design phase, Web developers are interested in learning about how their Web site renders on different configurations and browsers in order to identify potential accessibility barriers, identify missing accessibility features, or to enhance existing ones. Standard browser features such as turning off images, disabling scripting, or enlarging font sizes are helpful in evaluating accessibility features of Web sites. Additionally, filter and transformation tools assist the evaluation of Web sites by modifying the appearence of the Web pages; for example by displaying the content in text only, by presenting the Web pages without color, or by reading the content aloud. In order to evaluate the accessibility features of a Web site effectively, evaluation tools which provide the following should be used:. ...

Stephen has brittle bone disease which means his independence is greatly reduced as, to prevent injury, he has to rely on his parents helping him with day to day tasks. Stephens Occupational Therapist originally contacted DEMAND because he was at risk of injury from the rigid arms of his dining chair when getting in and out. To stop this from happening, we modified the chairs arms so that they could rotate up and out of the way, allowing Stephen to get in and out of the chair by himself. To improve his independence even further we incorporated a neat, easy to operate mechanism which allowed Stephen to move his chair closer to, and away from, the table without assistance.. Before DEMAND helped, getting Stephen close enough to the dining table on his high chair was really hard. We had to try and push him forward towards the dining table, as thats the only way we could manage. There was always the risk of tipping him over. Now Stephen is able to pull himself into the table.". ...
Lily prepared her home for Jack and Janets wedding and took care of her kids, who were sick with the flu. Meg arrived and brought cupcakes from Emma. When Holden asked where Craig was, Meg told Holden that her marriage to Paul was over. Craig went to Fairwinds and told the maid he had a baby gift for Meg. He saw Megs suitcases packed and standing in the living room and asked if Meg was going somewhere. Paul walked in and told Craig that Megs whereabouts were none of Craigs business. Craig told Paul it was strange that Meg was leaving shortly after Josie had returned to town. Paul realized that Craig had brought Josie back. Craig told Paul he had simply produced a "material witness" to help Dusty, who had been "unjustly accused" of a crime, and he was sorry if doing so had "torpedoed [Pauls] wedded bliss." Craig then claimed he wanted to help Paul, to make amends for the past. Craig offered to talk to Meg, but Paul told him to stay away from her. Craig left, and Paul followed shortly ...

When unpacked within the model of participation, it is clear that individuals from the three East African countries who had experienced a stroke, had problems in accomplishing the tasks they could perform previously. They also experienced a role change and perceived themselves to be ill, and as not having recovered from the stroke. They also experienced a lack of support from family and friends and physical environmental barriers. These findings were similar to findings of previous studies from both developed [37, 38] and developing countries [34, 35]. Individuals who had experienced a stroke in Canada [37] and an elderly population in Norway [38] experienced fewer barriers in the physical environment than were experienced by the African stroke sample.. In addition to the challenges experienced in the physical environment, the individuals stated that the lack of accomplishment of tasks and restricted roles they experienced was as a result of impairments or lack of the ability to conduct certain ...

People with disabilities often carry much of the responsibility for the process of making adaptations to their homes and look to the professionals involved for support. The study described in this article asked people with disabilities whether they believed that they received appropriate professional support, information and practical help when adapting their homes and sought to learn more about their feelings about the adaptation process. A qualitative research method, using three focus groups in different geographical areas, was carried out with a purposive sample of participants who had received adaptations to their homes and had been assisted by their local authorities. The groups comprised participants from urban and rural populations, who had a mix of housing tenure and a variety of professional support. The findings demonstrated that this method was appropriate as a means of both discovering how people felt about the process and identifying what they found to be the most helpful ...

2015 Background: Despite the considerable injury burden attributable to falls at home among the general population, few effective safety interventions have been identified. This study tested the safety benefits of home modifications, including handrails for outside steps and internal stairs, grab rails for bathrooms, outside lighting, edging for outside steps, and slip-resistant surfacing for outside areas such as decks and porches. Methods: This study is a single-blind, cluster-randomised controlled trial of households from the Taranaki region of New Zealand. To be eligible, participants had to live in an owner-occupied dwelling constructed before 1980 and at least one member of every household had to be in receipt of state benefits or subsidies. This study randomly assigned households by electronic coin toss to either immediate home modifications (treatment group) or a 3-year wait before modifications (control group). Household members in the treatment group could not be masked to their ...
