Since the beginning of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967, over 700,000 Palestinians have been detained by Israel. This forms approximately 20% of the total Palestinian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). Considering the fact that the majority of those detained are male, the number of Palestinians detained forms approximately 40% of the total male Palestinian population in the OPT.
The book studies the experience of the Palestinian Muslim Brothers (MB) in GS in the 1949-1967 period, and the emergence of the Palestinian MB movement, and its expansion to include the Palestinians in the Arab countries, except for Jordan. The first chapter is an introductory one that talks about the Palestinian MB and the Arab environment during that period. It depicts the general conditions of the Palestinian scene and the MB movement and its role in the 1948 war. Chapter two discusses the Palestinian MB movement in GS during the 1949-1956 period, while chapter three covers that movement during the 1957-1967 period and its restructuring to include the Palestinian MB in the Arab countries except Jordan. In addition to the establishment of the movement in GS, chapter three explains the activities in three countries: Egypt, Kuwait and Syria. As for chapter four, it focuses on the MB military action during the 1949-1956 period, highlighting its leading role in Palestinian resistance. The last ...
AMMAN, RAMALLAH, (PIC) - Dr. Jawad Al-Hamad, a strategic expert and director of the Center for Middle East Studies, described the Arab League delegations visit next Saturday to West Bank as a normalization step. Hamad considered in a statement to Quds Press Agency that the visit of the Arab League delegation to the West Bank is in favor of Israel and an unjustified normalization step. He criticized the Jordanian role in this visit as well as the unacceptable participation of the Arab Spring countries in it.. It is not permissible for Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen and Qatar to take part in such visit, otherwise they will be contradicting the positions they have been expressing towards the revolutions of the Arab peoples, Dr. Hamad said.. For his part; Dr. Abdul Sattar Qassem professor of political science at the Palestinian An-Najah University, criticized the visit of the Arab League delegation, to the West Bank.. He described this visit as an Arab normalization step with ...
In this volume, editor Michael Suleiman brings together 21 prominent scholars from a wide range of perspectives -- including anthropology, economics, history, law, literature and culture, political science, and sociology -- to take a close look at the status of Arabs in North America. Topics range from the career of Arab American singer, dancer, and storyteller Wadeeha Atiyeh to a historical examination of Arab Americans and Zionism. The contributors discuss in Detroit, a group of well-educated Jordanian men, and the Shia Muslims -- to illustrate the range of Arab emigre experience. More broadly, they examine Arab American identity, political activism, and attempts by Arab immigrants to achieve respect and recognition in their new homes. They address both the present situation for Arab Americans and prospects for their future ...
Posted on 09/13/2011 10:13:34 AM PDT by AfricanChristian. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has captivated many Arabs with his tough talk against Israel, but voices at home and abroad question his drive to carve out a leadership role for Turkey in an Arab world once under the Ottoman imperial thumb. A Palestinian child crying in Gaza wrenches a mothers heart in Ankara, Erdogan told the Arab League in Cairo on Tuesday, using language calculated to delight Arab masses. His message of how Turks and Arabs twang to the same emotions would have seemed alien to a previous Turkey, friendly with its U.S. military ally, keen to join the European Union and disdainful of a backward Middle East on its doorstep. The so-called Turkish model has fascinated Arabs for several years, although no Arab country has emulated its mix of secular democracy, Islamist leadership and economic success. Yet Turkeys role is uncertain in a fluid region in which popular revolts are jolting many Arab nations, including some of ...
Following Fridays capture of four of the six prisoners who escaped from the Gilboa Israeli prison last week, Palestinians throughout the West Bank held marches and rallies in solidarity with the prisoners, who they term freedom fighters for the cause of Palestinian liberation.. Outside of Gilboa Prison, dozens of supporters gathered with bullhorns and noisemakers, hoping to be heard by the prisoners as they were transferred. They chanted in support of the Palestinian prisoners.. Hundreds of Palestinians marched through the streets of Ramallah on Saturday evening, chanting slogans in support of the heroism of the six prisoners who managed to escape through a tunnel that they dug with spoons.. Qaddura Faris, the head of the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), spoke at the rally, noting that Israeli authorities are now cracking down on all Palestinian prisoners, and that the prisoners are extremely vulnerable right now. He called on Palestinians to continue to engage in protest to pressure ...
WEST BANK, (PIC)- Intifada Youth Coalition condemned the heinous crime committed in al-Khalil by the Israeli soldiers, who assassinated three Palestinians, and called for igniting a new intifada.. The coalition, in a statement on Wednesday, called on the Palestinian youths to clash with the occupation forces in all seam zone areas and urged the resistance factions to respond to the occupations crime.. For its part, the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine condemned the assassination of the three Palestinian citizens by the occupation forces.. It called on the Palestinian citizens in a statement on Wednesday to escalate the confrontations and clashes with the occupation forces, considering this the most effective way to stop the attacks of the Israeli soldiers and settlers.. The Palestinian Prisoners Center for Studies has also appealed to prosecute the occupation leaders before the International Criminal Court, as war criminals who have continued to commit clear crimes against the Palestinian ...
The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. . . In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Academics for Bush (and his wars): Fouad Ajami Analyzes the Arab Natives for You. He has one of his usual pieces in the Wall Street Journal (thanks John and Walter). It is really your typical Fouad Ajami (and recently his obedient imitator `Abdur-Rahman Ar-Rashids) style: that, look at me, how civilized I am, and how uncivilized Arabs are. Why cant Arabs be civilized like me. Do you not respect me and reward me for being such a civilized guy? It is really sad how uncivilized Arabs are, etc. First he starts by telling you that The remarkable thing about the terror in Iraq is the silence with which it is greeted in other Arab lands. That is not really true. I have, I think, more extensive access to Arab media, and follow Arab opinions in print, and through TV broadcasts through my SuperDish and the other offerings on Globecast satellite TV, and consider myself a very close watcher of Arab public opinion, not through their jokes only and not through what a few handful Syrian writers in ...

April 28 was designated as a Day of Rage across the Occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. As about 1,500 Palestinian prisoners entered the second week of the mass hunger strike, this is a day for all Palestinians to show that they are in solidarity with the prisoners.. The Day of Rage was called for by the Fatah movement to show Palestinian opposition to the excessive practices of the Israeli occupation, particularly those of the Israel Prison Service, according to a statement.. The strike on Thursday 27 April and the Day of Rage on Friday 28 April have both unified the Palestinian people, Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, secretary general of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Palestine Monitor at a protest in the village of Rafat near Ramallah. What we see here today and in at least 16 other places in the West Bank are popular uprising and resistance. In my opinion, these are instruments to pressure Israel to respond to the Palestinian prisoners demands based on basic human ...

The office of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, issued an official statement defending the demolition of East Jerusalem Arab Hotel Shepherd, and challenging international condemnations in this regard. The Hotel, located in Sheikh Jarrah Arab neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem, was demolished by Israel on Sunday. In the statement, Netanyahu said that Jews must be encouraged to buy property in East Jerusalem, and should be allowed to rent or buy property especially in neighborhoods that have Jewish majority. He added that nobody should expect Israel to prevent the Jews from buying private property in Jerusalem. There isnt a single democratic government in the world that has ever prevented the Jews from buying property, Netanyahu said, Nobody should expect Israel to start doing that.. The Hotel is owned by members of the Al Husseini family, an Arab-Palestinian family, indigenous to East Jerusalem. Meanwhile, EU Foreign Chief, Catharine Ashton, slammed the demolition of the ...
Of course, the PCBS, having for years grossly inflated Palestinian demographics as a political weapon in the Arab conflict with Israel, is an organization greatly lacking in credibility, to put it mildly. As Michael Rubin neatly summarized in Commentary, the PCBS isnt allowed to report Palestinian emigration, double-counts Jerusalem (which is also counted by Israel), and has made revisions at the request of the Palestinian leadership when the population in Jerusalem, for example, was found to have declined. The error today may exceed one million people throughout areas claimed by the Palestinian Authority.. More importantly, if we wanted to ask the PCBS how many Palestinians there were, well, wed ask them. What Id like to know, is how it is possible for Israeli intelligence agencies, which can remotely hack Syrian air defense systems, to not know whether there are 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank, as Palestinians claim, or more like 1.5 million, as asserted by reputable, ...
Ref:79/2017. The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) expresses its deep concern that Augusta Victoria Hospital (al-Mutala) in occupied Jerusalem stopped receiving the Gaza Strip patients referred for treatment due to accumulating debts owed by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Thus, PCHR calls upon the Palestinian Ministry of Health to pay off immediately the accumulating financial dues for al-Motala Hospital. PCHR also warns that the Palestinian backboned organizations in occupied Jerusalem would collapse after the Palestinian Government withheld funds and payments of the financial dues at the time the Israeli authorities intensify its policies to create a Jewish majority in Jerusalem and paralyze and ruin the work of its institutions, which provide basic services to all Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.. According to information obtained by PCHRs fieldworker, on Saturday, 21 October 2017, Gaza Strips patients referred for treatment in al-Mutala Hospital were surprised ...

Arab leaders ended their annual summit Wednesday with no new initiatives for peace with Israel. The summit, held in Algeria, coincided with the 60th anniversary of the Arab League. The summit rejected Jordans plan to normalise relations with Israel by instead sticking to the 2002 peace plan. That plan promised to normalise relations only after an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories, the creation of a Palestinian state, and the settlement of Palestinian refugees. The summit announced the creation of an Arab Parliament to be based in the Syrian capital of Damascus. It will contain four members from each of the 22 Arab League states. Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi, the longest serving Arab leader at the meeting, caused tensions by telling the Palestinian delegation he thought both Palestinians and Israelis are stupid. He also reiterated his call for a single state solution, saying the solution I think is to have a single state. We cannot have two states. He also addressed terrorism, ...
The two-year intifada and Israels response largely explain the economic desperation of the Palestinians, formerly one of the most prosperous of Arab communities. Israeli curfews after terrorist attacks, plus restrictions on Palestinian workers entering Israel, cost al-Frahim his job and contact with Israelis he had worked with for more than 20 years. The current situation is a far cry from the years of relative peace after the 1993 Oslo accords, when the Palestinian economy flourished and standards of living rose. According to U.S. government reports, the Palestinian economy grew at a brisk 7 percent annually. The turnaround was underscored this week by Peter Hansen, the commissioner general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, who appealed for $94 million to be spent on food aid, repairing homes damaged in the fighting and creating temporary jobs in the West Bank and Gaza. The physical isolation and the increasing estrangement between Israelis and Palestinians since the bloodshed began
The Peace Plan presented by Trump and his administration as the ultimate solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been overwhelmingly rejected by Palestinians and their leadership. But what comes next? What strategy should Palestinians adopt? These two papers, written by two leading Palestinian analysts, lay out two distinct approaches for attaining Palestinian rights and aspirations.. Diana Buttu argues that it is time for Palestinians to push for a one-state solution focusing on equal rights for all, while Mouin Rabbani contends that a one-state approach will not succeed given the current power dynamics and, therefore, favours a renewed Palestinian strategy to preserve the pre-Trump international consensus focused on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 and a just resolution of the refugee question.. ...

Mashrou Leila perform at Londons Barbican in 2017. Ali Matar produces Arab-themed musicals that start in their run in Londons West End before going on tour in the Middle East - most recently Broken Wings, based on Khalil Gibrans eponymous 1912 poetic novel, which will be playing at the Beiteddine Festival in Lebanon this July following a run at Londons Theatre Royal Haymarket last year. He says the Arab Spring is one of the big reasons artists from the Middle East feel the need to relay messages with their music, including through social media. He also credits it with creating an interest among non-Arab audiences in the capital.. One of the most visible and important expressions of contemporary Arab arts & culture in London is Shubbak Festival, the fifth edition of which is currently underway. Over two weeks, 150 events across film, theatre, literature, and visual arts take over the city.. London is immensely well-connected with the Arab region. Arab artists and Arab culture have ...
I wouldnt mind swapping hostile Arab areas in Israel for annexing much of Judea and Samaria. The catch of course is the Arabs will never accept an arrangement that would divest Israel of a hostile Arab population and which leaves Israel with more Jews and more secure borders. That is not the point of pushing for a Palestinian reichlet. The point is its a way station towards Israels eventual destruction. It doesnt need to come all at once. All the Arabs are asking now for is a down payment and they can make more demands later. At no point will the Arabs agree to ever end the conflict. If Israels leaders are so stupid as to agree, it would become G-d forbid, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Or perhaps Israels leaders do not want to leave the state to real Jews - such as yourself, Carl. They can always retire abroad after the dirty work is done.. ...
Chabin uncritically quotes Daoud Kuttab who claims Palestinians in East Jerusalem pay the same national and municipal taxes as Jews in West Jerusalem but receive a fraction of the services. A visit to these neighborhoods Kuttab says, Show clearly a huge disparity. USA Today fails to ask Kuttab why differences exist. CAMERA previously has noted that disparities between Jewish and Arab neighborhoods in east Jerusalem or Israeli Jewish and nearby Israeli Arab towns are sometimes the result of higher rates of Arab tax avoidance or failure to pay for municipal services and/or even accepting services from the Jewish state. In eastern Jerusalem some such instances may reflect an intention not to accept the legitimacy of Israel or reluctance or refusal to have any involvement with municipal politics (East Jerusalem: Setting the Record Straight, Nov. 21, 2013 ...
Citation: Punamäki, Raija-Leena. 1986. Stress Among Palestinian Women under Military Occupation; Womens Appraisal of Stressors, Their Coping Modes, and Their Mental Health. International Journal of Psychology 21 (1-4): 445-62.. Author: Raija-Leena Punamäki. Abstract: Psychological responses and mental health of 174 Palestinian women living in the occupied West-Bank and the Gaza Strip were studied through a stress model. Thirty-five Palestinian women living in Israel proper who had not been exposed to military occupation were interviewed as a comparison group. The stress process studied consists of womens appraisal of threat and the importance of the stressors in their lives, the estimation of their own resources to cope with stress, actual coping modes, and mental health outcomes. Women living under military occupation tended to appraise their environment as highly threatening and their experiences as strain-producing. At the same time they believed they had sufficient assets, especially ...

Arab Leaders Facing Consequences of Their Own Follies. Should the global community pity or ridicule the Arab leaders for engineering their own pitfalls of self-destruction? Life and wisdom are narrated by compassion and positive moving stories of human peace and harmony. The cruel rivalries forging sectarian bloodbath at Aleppo, Damascus, Baghdad, Mosul, and Yemen make no sense. Had they believed in God, humanity and purpose of life with tangible accountability, the Earth could have been a better place for all to co-exist peacefully. Viewing the perpetuated moral, sectarian and economic and political disintegration overshadowing the Arab Middle East anarchy turned into insanity overwhelms the daily reports of massive deaths, and destructions. Post 9/11, the American leadership tried to reconstruct the Arab political landscape by multiple configuration of animosities and intrigues to make the Arab leaders fight against one another. The mindless Arab leaders followed the George Bush dictum to stir ...

a previous version of this blog Sad Word of the Day: Politicide was published first on Sep 4, 2003). It was almost five years ago when cruising through a Books etc bookshop I finally found a word I had been looking to invent myself for quite some time.. In fact, on the one hand I know from several first-hand sources, plus plenty of newspaper reports and analyses, of the systematic destruction of the Palestinian identity by Israeli policies. On the other hand, I do not think this can be described as a Palestinian Genocide.. Unless there is a massive media cover-up including, the situation in Palestine simply does not reflect the common definition of Genocide. For example, there is no killing of Palestinian people for the mere fact of them being Palestinians. The risk is that to talk about a Palestinian Genocide means to demean both the victims of genocide (a word that would be watered down), and the Palestinians (whose situation would be completely misunderstood, with the cause fought not ...
Israel may as of next week annex the Jordan Valley and all 150 Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, i.e. 30pc of the West Bank, while the Palestinians would have four years to win an independent state and a capital in East Jerusalem. That is the substance of President Donald Trumps vision for an Israel-Palestinian peace as he presented it at the White House on Tuesday, Jan. 28, alongside PM Binyamin Netanyahu, in a striking historic event - even for the critics of its content. The prime minister stated I agree to negotiate with the Palestinians on the basis of your plan, because, he said, unlike all previous peace initiatives, this one strikes a realistic balance between Israels security needs with recognition of Biblical sites as the bedrock of our Jewish heritage, while also understanding and addressing Palestinian aspirations. All previous plans required Israels withdrawal from the Jordan Valley, its vital eastern frontier ...
GENEVA (2 October 2018) - The killing and wounding of more Palestinian protesters at the Gaza fence by the Israeli security forces is an ongoing affront to human rights and human dignity, said a UN human rights expert.. The deaths of seven more participants in the Gaza demonstrations, and the wounding of more than 200 others, this past Friday indicates that the Israeli security forces are not heeding the international criticism of their use of lethal fire against Palestinian demonstrators, who appear to pose no credible threat to Israeli security forces, said Michael Lynk, the UN Special Rapporteur for the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory. Two of the Palestinians killed on Friday were boys aged 11 and 14. One Gaza-based human rights group, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, estimates that 163 of the injured demonstrators were shot with live fire.. Since the start of the Great March of Return on 30 March, more than 150 Palestinians have been killed during ...

JERUSALEM, Nov. 7 (JTA) - Israel´s Knesset has voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of an Israeli Arab legislator. The vote is likely to exacerbate already strained relations between the country´s Jewish and Arab communities. Wednesday´s vote - after a Knesset committee recommended the step on Monday - came after the attorney general, Elyakim Rubinstein, filed two separate indictments against Azmi Beshara. The first was over a call Beshara issued during a speech in Syria earlier this year for the Arab world to unite against the warmongering government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. The speech was made in front of sworn enemies of the Jewish state such as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The second indictment was for visits Beshara arranged of Israeli Arabs to Syria without the approval of Israeli authorities. Israeli occupation forces (IOF) continued to violate Palestinians human rights and commit crimes against civilians and their properties, conducting raids into Palestinian cities without regard to the state of emergency declared across the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) since 06 March 2020, in the efforts put forward to combat the spread of coronavirus. IOF raids are conducted without proper attention to prevention and safety standards to mitigate the risk of transmitting coronavirus to Palestinian territory, as the virus is widespread throughout Israel. PCHR is concerned that Israeli raids undermine preventive measures adopted by the government. Meanwhile, settlers backed up by IOF continued to seize more civilian property and attack civilians and their property.. This week, PCHR documented 98 violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law (IHL) by IOF and settlers in the oPt. As the state of emergency enters its 5th week, as well as the extreme ...
This article evaluates Arab public opinion with the Arab Opinion Index by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS) in Doha, Qatar. The Index covers 12 Arab countries with 85 percent of the population of the entire Arab world. The data was weighted by UNDP population figures in order to arrive at conclusions about the totality of opinions in the Arab states. There is indeed overwhelming support for democracy and change in the region, but, at the same time, the data imply real basic weaknesses of civil society support for the structures of democracy.. Ever since the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya in 2011, the question has arisen as to how big the real support for democracy in the Arab world is. Recent events in Egypt have led many observers to think that instead of an Arab Spring, one should rather talk about an Arab Winter.[1] Thousands of reports and opinion pieces in the worlds media and scholarly articles have been published on the issue, but hard facts on mass ...

Middle East Monitor / December 30, 2020. The Palestinian Forum for Israeli Studies (MADAR) said Arab and Israeli indicators show that the majority of Arabs reject normalisation with Israel and view the Palestinian issue as the core of the conflict in the region, despite the recent deals concluded between Tel Aviv and a number of Arab countries.. In a new report, MADAR said over the last two years, Israel and its new allies have used Arab social media influencers especially in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to call for normalisation with the occupation state.. MADAR said in addition to social media influencers, journalists and even clerics have gone as far as attacking Palestinians and questioning the status of Palestine, including Al-Aqsa Mosque, amid silence from the ruling regimes.. Meanwhile, the report notes, Israeli official social media accounts have celebrated such posts and re-shared them to create a general feeling that the Arab people accept and welcome normalisation and ...

When the United Nations General Assembly voted in 1947 to partition Palestine into a Jewish State, an Arab State, and an internationally administered enclave of Jerusalem, a more broad region of the modern-day West Bank was assigned to the Arab State. In the 1948 Arab-Israeli War most of the area assigned to the Arab State was occupied by Jordanian and Iraqi forces. Jordan annexed the West Bank after the war, and the annexation was recognized by the UK. The idea of an independent Palestinian state was not raised by the Arab populations there at the time, due to lack of political representation. King Abdullah of Jordan was crowned King of Jerusalem and granted Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank and East Jerusalem Jordanian citizenship. ...
Look at the timeline of events in the Arab Spring and you will see that women have played a huge role in its development. Yet the contribution women make to the economy in the Arab world cannot be examined outside the framework of the political and social context. Many reports have indicated that the gap between women and men, and the percentage of women joining the workforce in the Arab world, is decreasing. Such reports are misleading and paint contrary pictures by concentrating only on one side of the coin and ignoring the political facts that exert such an influence on the percentages of women in the workforce. Women need political support to fortify their struggle and sustain their economic contributions.. The political activism of Arab women has increased enormously, compared to that of men. The so-called The Arab Spring was a social revolution before being a political one. However, it has been hijacked and driven in the other direction, restricting the space for freedom of expression ...
While the entire world is busy in its efforts to combat terrorism, the Israeli government is exploiting the situation by further increasing its unilateral steps and creating facts on the ground that are aggravating Palestinians aspiration for peace and justice.. On 24 September, 2001, the Israeli government issued a military order numbered 01/01/s (see document in Arabic page1, page2) through which 80,000 Dunums of Palestinian land (1.4% of the total area of the West Bank) in the North of the West Bank were declared as closed military areas. JERUSALEM (AP) - A 17-year-old Palestinian died on Monday, two months after he was wounded in the neck by Israeli gunfire during clashes near the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian health authorities said. The shooting occurred during one of numerous clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces during the 11-day war in May between Israel and Hamas, the fourth conflict since the militant group seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.. A statement from Palestinian health authorities said Youssef Nawaf died after a May 14 gunshot wound in the neck damaged his spinal cord, leaving him in critical condition.. At least 26 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank during the May fighting, according to the United Nations. At least 254 people were killed in Gaza, including 67 children and 39 women, while 12 civilians, including two children and one soldier, were killed in Israel.. Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 war. The Palestinians seek the area as the ...
Sundras, a Palestinian girl from the West Bank village of Anata, was attending a clinic funded by the Palestine Childrens Relief Fund, an Ohio-based charity that treats about 2,000 critically ill children in the Palestinian territories each year. [...] even if Sundras needs cardiac surgery, the future of the childrens charity program has been thrown into doubt by U.S. sanctions against the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority banning all contact with Palestinian hospitals and Ministry of Health employees. Under new guidelines issued April 12 by the Treasury Departments Office of Foreign Asset Control, U.S. citizens and organizations must cease all transactions with the Palestinian government, its ministries and institutions operating under their control. The Treasury directive noted that Hamas is classified as a terrorist entity, and it ordered U.S. citizens to conclude all contacts with the Palestinian Authority by Friday, unless specifically permitted to continue. U.S. persons are prohibited from
Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, WHO Director-General, announced today that the health situation of people in the occupied Palestinian territory is deteriorating as a result of the escalation of the conflict compounded by further border closures and curfews throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip since March 2002.
While many parts of the world transition to mandatory lockdown, Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory face uncertainty about how they will be protected from the spread of COVID-19. This blog will focus on the circumstances of three particularly vulnerable population groups: i) the population of Gaza, ii) child and adult detainees in Israeli prisons and detention facilities, and iii) families and individuals displaced by home demolitions.. On 19 March 2020, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights released a statement on Israels legal duty, as the occupying power, to ensure that Palestinians are protected as far as possible from the spread of COVID-19. UN Special Rapporteur Michael Lynk asserted, The legal duty, anchored in Article 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, requires that Israel, the occupying power, must ensure that all the necessary preventive means available to it are utilised to combat the spread of contagious diseases and epidemics. We note that an ...
By Nir Hasson. 15 Apr 2020 - Clinic in Silwan raided, activists arrested because kits were provided by the Palestinian Authority.. Israeli police raided a coronavirus testing clinic in the East Jerusalem Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan and arrested its organizers on Tuesday [14 Apr] night because the clinic was operated in collaboration with the Palestinian Authority.. According to the clinics managers, there is a shortage of coronavirus tests in Silwan, where doctors say there are 40 confirmed cases and where overcrowded living conditions could lead to a rapid spread of the virus.. The clinic was opened in a hall at one of the local mosques. It was closed on Tuesday night because to the end-of-Passover curfew, but police officers nonetheless arrived, questioned neighbors and arrested four activists who were involved in setting up the clinic.. The coronavirus tests were meant to be processed by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. However, Israel prohibits any PA activity in Jerusalem ...
To begin with, in their negotiations with Israel, Egypt and Jordan never asserted any territorial claims against the area of sovereign Israel. Unlike many Palestinians today, the Egyptians and the Jordanians harbor no aspirations to make Israeli cities, such as Haifa or Jaffa, part of their respective states. And whereas there are no Egyptian or Jordanian national minorities living within Israel, many Arab citizens of Israel identify themselves as Palestinian nationals. Operating among them are political, religious, and ideological forces dedicated to subverting the existence of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people. In 2006, for example, representatives from the National Committee for the Heads of the Arab Local Authorities in Israel issued a document entitled The Future Vision of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel, which calls for the introduction of consensual democracy in Israel, in which both the Palestinian and the Jewish nations would partner to govern Israel jointly -- the ...
Madam President, Appalling events in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territory have once again called this Council into Special Session. We have recently witnessed the most significant escalation in hostilities since 2014. According to figures verified by my Office, 242 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli Security Forces (the ISF) in strikes on Gaza, including 63 children. Thousands of others have been injured while it is estimated that over 74,000 Palestinians have been displaced. In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, 28 Palestinians, including five children, were killed as of 24 May. At the same time, rockets launched by Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups killed 10 Israeli citizens and residents including two children, and forced thousands into shelters. This escalation was directly linked to protests and a heavy response from Israeli security forces first in East Jerusalem, then spreading to the entire occupied Palestinian territory and also within Israel. Two main issues ...
Palestine is not a state. Palestine does not have a single central government, it does not have an army, it does not have control over airspace and most of the territory it claims. In practice, the Palestinian Authority, is responsible for some of the civilian needs of the residents in the West Bank (and it does that very badly if you ask me). In the Gaza Strip, theres an alternative government run by Hamas Movement.. Other than that, no one is occupying Palestine. The territories claimed by the Palestinians were occupied by Israel from Egypt and Jordan. This happened in 1967 and there was no Palestinian entity at all at this time. Also, the UN Resolution 181 (II) from 1947, to establish arab state next to a jewish state in Palestine* was rejected by the Arabs (Palestinians as well).. *at that point, people may say basically Palestine exiested before, so I note that in fact, there was never an Independent Palestinian-Arab state before. Palestine was just a region that was controlled by ...

An interview with Jonathan Cook Five Books - 25 February 2014Interviewed by: Bethan Staton Outside of the Middle East, many people understand Palestine to mean the West Bank and Gaza, and Palestinians as the people living in these areas. But Palestinians who remained in Israel after the creation of the state in 1948 - when some 700,000 were displaced in the Nakba or catastrophe - now make up around 20% of Israels population. Could you explain a bit more about this community, and why it has been overlooked? The difficulty for Palestinians remaining in what becomes Israel after 1948 is that the Palestinian national movement develops in exile, in the occupied territories and the neighboring Arab states. Palestinians in Israel are excluded and shielded from these developments and left in what amounts to a political and social ghetto. Israel strictly circumscribes their understanding of who they are and anything to do with their history, heritage and culture. Israel controls the education system, for

The Chairman of the United Nations panel dealing with Palestinian rights today expressed hope that the positive momentum gained by Israels removal of settlements from the Gaza Strip and parts of the northern West Bank would be followed by similar steps in the rest of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and
Fact, Israeli Arabs are part of the great Arab nation and have no own unique national characteristics. This approach also relies on cultural similarity that exists between the Palestinian residents of the West Bank and Gaza Arabs residents of the Kingdom of Transjordan and Arabs in Egypt and other Arab countries. Fact, Azmi Bishara, a Palestinian, said: There is no Palestinian nation, has only Arab nation.. Fact, Judaism existed over 5000 years more than all another Religion.. Fact written in the Koran: Moses said to his people, my people, remember the grace inclined you God establish you prophets and doing you kings, and gives you had not given anyone in the Universe. My people, go to the holy land that wrote you God. Sura 5 20-21 … it is written for you in black and white in the Quran then why are you denying the truth that Israel was our lot before the Palestinians came here?. Fact, we Israelis want peace and condemn all attacks on civilians and certainly not deliberately kill women and ...
Overview: The government of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has two main objectives: to reverse the peace process and its achievements, and to maintain Israels control over all of historic Palestine. Sharons immediate goal, however, is forcing the Palestinian Authority (PA) to accept Israels cease-fire terms which would permit Israel to have a security role in the Palestinian territories. Aware of Israels intentions, the Palestinians rejected the amendments to the Tenet and Mitchell plans made by U.S. Middle East Envoy Anthony Zinni. The changes would legalize Israels military actions against the PA and the Palestinian people. The nature of the ongoing Israeli military operation and the U.S. administrations support for Israel has made it difficult to see a way out of the current bloodshed. The Israeli incursion in the West Bank is creating a dynamic that will be difficult to reverse. The Israeli government seems to not only want to weaken the PA, but to entirely eliminate its security ...
This approach, now adopted by the Russians, directly harms the processes toward regulating Israels ties with Arab and Muslim states, which are based upon common interests that are not impacted by the Palestinian nationalist idea. Russia has not sufficed with publishing its stance but has acted to openly enlist the support of prominent Arab states. So, for example, ahead of the Bahrain conference, the foreign ministers of both Russia and Egypt declared that both countries were in agreement on the need for a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue. Egypt, however, sent its representatives to Bahrain. It, along with other leading countries in the region like Saudi Arabia, have a clear interest in developing the economy of the region and the Palestinian territories in particular. Both Riyadh and Cairo are interested in containing the Palestinian issue and silencing another local focal point that is getting in the way of regional development ...

“The Arab world has made huge progress in giving children access to school,” says , a nonresident fellow with the at Brookings. Yet even so, she calls the 2.6 million Syrian children out of school in the region “perhaps the biggest education crisis globally.” In the podcast, Jalbout—former CEO of the Queen Rania Foundation and a global leader on education in international development—discusses the challenges and solutions to educating children in the Arab world, why quality and not just access matters, how the education crisis is a global security issue, and why 3 out of 4 Arab women remain out of the labor force in their countries. Much of the discussion is about Jalbout’s new report, “.” Show Notes: Subscribe to the Brookings Cafeteria on , listen on , and send feedback email to .
