The Arabian Peninsula is a key region for understanding hominin dispersals and the effect of climate change on prehistoric demography, although little information on these topics is presently available owing to the poor preservation of archaeological sites in this desert environment. Here, we describe the discovery of three stratified and buried archaeological sites in the Nefud Desert, which includes the oldest dated occupation for the region. The stone tool assemblages are identified as a Middle Palaeolithic industry that includes Levallois manufacturing methods and the production of tools on flakes. Hominin occupations correspond with humid periods, particularly Marine Isotope Stages 7 and 5 of the Late Pleistocene. The Middle Palaeolithic occupations were situated along the Jubbah palaeolake-shores, in a grassland setting with some trees. Populations procured different raw materials across the lake region to manufacture stone tools, using the implements to process plants and animals. To reach the

Already we are beginning to see communities reaping the rewards of living in malaria-free areas. First and foremost, no malaria transmission means no more illnesses and deaths from the disease. Simply put, people that live in malaria-free communities live healthier and happier lives. But that isnt all. Communities that have eliminated the threat of the disease are also more prosperous and financially better off: families and businesses alike no longer have to spend money on healthcare costs related to malaria. Employees no longer miss work because they or someone in their family has the disease. Businesses become more productive. Children will not have to stay home away from school, nor will they have to suffer lifelong disabilities that can occur from complicated malaria. Healthcare facilities can consequently be freed up to focus on other medical issues.. Best of all, we are developing a strategy to scale up this approach to the entire country. Our aim is to maximize local resources in order ...
Despite broad consensus on Africa as the main place of origin for anatomically modern humans, their dispersal pattern out of the continent continues to be intensely debated. In extant human populations, the observation of decreasing genetic and phenotypic diversity at increasing distances from sub-Saharan Africa has been interpreted as evidence for a single dispersal, accompanied by a series of founder effects. In such a scenario, modern human genetic and phenotypic variation was primarily generated through successive population bottlenecks and drift during a rapid worldwide expansion out of Africa in the Late Pleistocene. However, recent genetic studies, as well as accumulating archaeological and paleoanthropological evidence, challenge this parsimonious model. They suggest instead a southern route dispersal into Asia as early as the late Middle Pleistocene, followed by a separate dispersal into northern Eurasia. Here we test these competing out-of-Africa scenarios by modeling hypothetical ...
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Two potential migratory routes followed by modern humans to colonize Eurasia from Africa have been proposed. These are the two natural passageways that connect both continents: the northern route through the Sinai Peninsula and the southern route across the Bab al Mandab strait. Recent archaeological and genetic evidence have favored a unique southern coastal route. Under this scenario, the study of the population genetic structure of the Arabian Peninsula, the first step out of Africa, to search for primary genetic links between Africa and Eurasia, is crucial. The haploid and maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecule has been the most used genetic marker to identify and to relate lineages with clear geographic origins, as the African Ls and the Eurasian M and N that have a common root with the Africans L3. RESULTS: To assess the role of the Arabian Peninsula in the southern route, we genetically analyzed 553 Saudi Arabs using partial (546) and complete mtDNA ...

The leaders committed to promoting a culture of net use, highlighting that a significant change in mindset and behavior towards prevention can lead to a malaria-free world. They shared a vision of a malaria-free district - where communities would have higher levels of productivity, due to less money lost on treating malaria and more time spent on income-generating activities. Leaders also raised the need for adequate community-led mobilization for household registration and subsequent LLINs collection, as well as working with the local wanaichi to create a net use culture.. Successes and Impact. The high turnout of community members can be attributed to effective community-led mobilization and the malaria messages that promoted positive prevention behaviors such as net use. In Nebbi district, for example, leaders indicated that sensitizing the community before the distribution was key to its success: ...
Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute faculty recently conducted a review of malaria elimination data. Under the Global Eradication Effort beginning in the late 1940s, some 79 countries had approached or achieved elimination before the international funds supporting the effort dried up in 1969. Contrary to their expectation that the mosquito-borne disease would reappear in countries that discontinued the interventions, the researchers found that those nations that achieved elimination have remained malaria-free, while most of those that came close experienced a resurgence.. If you think about it, its a bit shocking. Why should going all the way to zero be better than going most of the way to zero? asks David L. Smith, PhD, MA, MS, an Epidemiology professor and one of the studys authors.. The researchers dont yet have an answer to that question, but there are several possibilities. During the same period, many economies were developing and health systems improving. So researchers tried to ...

The seventh century saw the rise of Islam as the peninsulas dominant religion. The Islamic prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca in about 570 and first began preaching in the city in 610, but migrated to Medina in 622. Muhammad established a new unified polity in the Arabian peninsula which under the subsequent Rashidun and Umayyad Caliphates saw a century of rapid expansion of Arab power well beyond the Arabian peninsula in the form of a vast Muslim Arab Empire with an area of influence that stretched from the northwest Indian subcontinent, across Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, southern Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula, to the Pyrenees. Indo-Roman trade relations (see also the spice trade and incense road) was trade between the Indian subcontinent and the Roman Empire in Europe and the Mediterranean. Trade through the overland caravan routes via Asia Minor and the Middle East, though at a relative trickle compared to later times, antedated the southern trade route via the Red Sea and monsoons which started around the beginning of the Common Era (CE) following the reign of Augustus and his conquest of Egypt in 30 BCE. The southern route so helped enhance trade between the ancient Roman Empire and the Indian subcontinent, that Roman politicians and historians are on record decrying the loss of silver and gold to buy silk to pamper Roman wives, and the southern route grew to eclipse and then totally supplant the overland trade route. Roman and Greek traders frequented the ancient Tamil country, present day Southern India and Sri Lanka, securing trade with the seafaring Tamil states of the Pandyan, Chola and Chera dynasties and ...

The Soqotra archipelago is one of the most isolated landmasses in the world, situated at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden between the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia. The main island of Soqotra lies not far from the proposed southern migration route of anatomically modern humans out of Africa 60,000 years ago (kya), suggesting the island may harbor traces of that first dispersal. Nothing is known about the timing and origin of the first Soqotri settlers. The oldest historical visitors to the island in the 15th century reported only the presence of an ancient population. We collected samples throughout the island and analyzed mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosomal variation. We found little African influence among the indigenous people of the island. Although the island population likely experienced founder effects, links to the Arabian Peninsula or southwestern Asia can still be found. In comparison with datasets from neighboring regions, the Soqotri population shows evidence of long-term isolation ...

This Selected Issues paper on Saudi Arabia assesses Saudi Arabias role in the oil market and global economy. Saudi Arabia, the worlds largest producer and exporter of oil, has long played a systemically important role in the global oil market. Short-term fluctuations in Saudi Arabias oil production have partially reflected attempts to stabilize the global oil market. Saudi Arabia has on several occasions used its systemic role to raise production to fill global demand gaps created by large supply disturbances. The authorities have made significant investments in higher education to enable productive private-sector employment for new Saudi labor force entrants.

As far as I know Indian groups are not homogeneous but show high degree of substructure. But the way I understood ML graph, all the diversity is confined to India. This is not the case with SE Asian groups where different components show varying degree of presence all over Eurasia and Oceania. That mean Homo Sapiens must have taken inhospitable northern route and progressed quickly to tropical and hospitable SE Asia. There the population might have been exploded resulting back migration to northern Asia and southern Asia. Had it been southern route, SEAsian diversity would have been observed in India with its hospitable and tropical weather. ...

In April-June 2009, strong seismic activity and ground deformations at this site marked the activation of the magma system beneath Harrat Lunayyir. In this study, we present new three-dimensional models of the attenuation of P and S waves during the unrest in 2009 based on the analysis of t*. We measured 1658 and 3170 values of t* for P and S waves, respectively, for the same earthquakes that were previously used for travel time tomography. The resulting anomalies of the P and S wave attenuation look very similar. In the center of the study area, we observe a prominent high-attenuation pattern, ...

Eighteen years ago my family and I moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where my husband, Nick, had been sent by his maritime law firm. [Names have been changed and, for the record, the marriage, ended.] With last years bombing of a compound like the one we lived on and with the probable inclusion of women in the Kingdoms next municipal elections, it seems time to reflect on a lifestyle thats gone the way of the ha-ha plant.. A maritime law firm in the desert? exclaimed the pianist Rosalyn Tureck when I told her where we were going.. But Jeddah is a port and anyway, Nicks firm was expanding to include international law.. I didnt want to move to Saudi Arabia. Thered just been a spate of hijackings and even if we got past the improbable hurdle of never arriving in the first place, I worried that a truck could barrel past the compound guard and blow the place up.. Nothing like that has ever happened, Nick assured. Saudi Arabia isnt like the rest of the Middle East. Its a repressive regime; no ...
Whilst ringing at Sabkhat Al Fasl on 10 October 2015 we caught a first year Citrine Wagtail. This was the first time we have caught and ringed this species in Saudi Arabia and was a bit of a surprise as we seldom catch any wagtails as they are so good at seeing and avoiding the nets. Citrine Wagtail is a scarce winter visitor to the Eastern Province with most birds seen at either Dhahran or Sabkhat Al Fasl probably because these are the better-watched sites in the region. Elsewhere in Saudi Arabia it is also a scarce winter visitor with records of summer plumage adults seen in late March but the majority of birds being first winters seen in August to October. ...

Acknowledging that the WHO European Region is the first region in the world to have achieved interruption of indigenous malaria transmission, as declared by the WHO Regional Director for Europe on 20 April 2016, we appreciate the support and role of WHO and partners, particularly the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, in reaching this significant target.. It is important to note that, while this achievement is extraordinary, it is fragile. The WHO European Region is subject to the continual importation of cases from other regions with endemic malaria and any weakening of political commitment may lead to the resurgence of malaria in countries that have become malaria-free.. Preventing the re-establishment of malaria transmission in countries of the WHO European Region is an essential step towards the implementation of Health 2020, the Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030 and the goals and targets of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development..
