We report a draft genome assembly for the teleost gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), reconstructed by combination of short- and long-read high-throughput sequencing, and genetic linkage maps. The assembly comprised 5,039 scaffolds that span 1.24 Gb of the expected 1.59 Gb complete genome size, with 932 scaffolds (~732 Mb) anchored to 24 chromosomes. This sequencing strategy resulted in a high quality fish genome assembly, as supported by the high N50 (1.07 Mb) and lower L50 (227) values. We used next-generation sequencing (NGS) coupled with suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) to generate a transcriptome database of genes from tiger shrimp that survived White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) challenge. Mortalities can reach 100% and have resulted in an 80% decline in the number of hatcheries actively producing M. rosenbergii. In Bangladesh, black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon; Fabricius, 1798) aquaculture has come to be one of the most important sectors in both the rural and national economies. Likewise, organic shrimp aquaculture has emerged as an alternative farming enterprise for farmers especially in the southwestern districts of Bangladesh. The present study aims to show key performance characteristics of organic shrimp farmers and farming in a prototypical shrimp farming area in Bangladesh. Data was collected in 2009 from organic shrimp farmers in the Kaligonj and Shyamnagar sub-districts through questionnaire interviews, transect walks and focus group discussions. The mean productivity of organic shrimp farming in the area is 320 kg ha−1 yr−1 (ranging from 120 to 711 kg ha−1year−1). Scale loss is a common occurrence in both wild fish and those in aquaculture production systems, and regeneration of scales has been described in several freshwater species. Relatively little information exists about this process in marine fish, and in the present study, the chronology of scale regeneration was characterized in juvenile sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, maintained in full seawater (SW; 36‰, 11.2 mM Ca(2+)) or brackish water (BW; 3.5‰, 1.1 mM Ca(2+)). Despite the significant differences in plasma osmolality, plasma calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) were similar between SW and BW. Removal of scales (2.25 cm(2)) did not modify plasma osmolality but a significant reduction in plasma Ca occurred in sea bass in BW during early phases of scale regeneration. The Science Issue and Relevance: Beginning in 2006, a new non-native shrimp species began showing up in commercial shrimp catches - the Asian tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). The numbers caught each year have increased and in 2011 there was at least a 10 fold increase in the number observed. This species is very popular in aquaculture, but has not been farmed in the United States since 2005. The only known accidental release of Asian tiger shrimp occurred in 1988 off the coast of South Carolina. Individuals were captured from that release for approximately six months and then none were seen until one was captured in the Gulf of Mexico in 2006. Tiger shrimp grow much larger than native shrimp and are known to be predaceous. Shrimpers and managers are concerned about the potential effects this species might have. This study is derived from a need to improve the distribution performance of agricultural-based industries in response to increasing food demands in Asia and elsewhere. Based on a four-by-eight matrix derived from both a value chain and a service profit chain, thirty different strategies are developed. This development is based on key success factors and strategies for vertical integration interviewed and cited in the literatures. The findings are identified by applying the Gray Relational Analysis (GRA). For this study, the key success factors for aquaculture wholesale markets include the communication, integration and cohesion of opinion within the wholesale market; government support; andmutual trust between members of the vertical integration scheme. Coastal lagoons are shallow estuarine systems which hold significant ecological and economic value to Rhode Island and its coastal communities. As the land around these coastal lagoons has been developed, excess inputs of nitrogen (N) from anthropogenic activity have entered the ecosystems. These inputs have resulted in eutrophication, leading to loss of ecosystem services and poor water quality. Oyster aquaculture has the potential to reduce N inputs via filter-feeding, helping to maintain water quality and ecosystem services. In this study, I monitored water quality within aquaculture and control sites in three coastal lagoons located in southern Rhode Island, to assess the effectiveness of cultured-oysters to maintain water quality.
