However, in intensive aquaculture production one farm carnivore species like salmon and also feeds herbivore species with fishmeal as this increase growth. I know that youve heard from us a lot recently, but with the recent release of the NOAA and Department of Commerce aquaculture policies, I thought it best to remind everyone what we as an agency are trying to accomplish and why it is so important for you, the public, to weigh in.. As you probably know, NOAA and the Department of Commerce released complementary aquaculture policies for public review and comment on February 9th. These draft policies are a reflection of the substantial input that we received during a public comment period in 2010 that included Listening Sessions all over the country as well as an online forum. That input was critical to forming effective, balanced aquaculture policies that will enable sustainable aquaculture production in the United States and thereby meet some of the challenges that we face with regard to seafood production, healthy oceans, jobs, and food security.. Coastal zones support fisheries that provide food for humans and feed for animals. The decline of fisheries worldwide has fostered the development of aquaculture. Recent research has shown that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) synthesized by microorganisms contribute to sustainable aquaculture production, providing feed to the cultured species, removing waste and contributing to the hygiene of closed systems. As ubiquitous components of coastal microbial habitats at the air-seawater and seawater-sediment interfaces as well as of biofilms and microbial aggregates, EPS mediate deleterious processes that affect the performance and productivity of aquaculture facilities, including biofouling of marine cages, bioaccumulation and transport of pollutants. These biomolecules may also contribute to the persistence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their impact on cultured species. There are only three fundamental sources for increasing seafood supply: 1) better management and utilization of wild fish stocks, 2) aquaculture and 3) aquaculture-enhanced wild fisheries. As part of a regional review of aquaculture being undertaken by the Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service, through the Regional Office for Africa (Accra, Ghana) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), this document reviews the recent history of aquaculture extension in five representative countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Country reviews were commissioned, analysed and synthesized. A number of extension guides, field manuals and dissemination tools were compared. Each of the reviewed countries has a similar history of aquaculture development, beginning with colonial experiments in the 1950s, through a period of neglect following independence in the 1960s, a period of intense international involvement in small-scale rural development (including aquaculture) in the 1970s and 80s ending in a period of reflection on results in the 1990s. While worldwide fisheries have been all but depleted, aquaculture holds the immense potential to provide a growing population with a cheap and sustainable source of protein.. However, as it is currently practiced, the aquaculture industry is dangerously unsustainable. The problem lies in the production of the feed for these farmed fish. It might surprise you to learn that the main source of protein in fish food is, in fact, fish. Small, low-value wild fish such as anchovies, herrings and sardines are caught in the ocean using destructive methods such as dynamite fishing and trawling. These forage fish are then ground up into fish meal, which is in turn incorporated into pellets that are fed to higher-value farmed fish such as salmon, trout and tilapia. The visit kicked off with a corporate introduction to HIPRA and a brief chat with the students, where they discussed the marketing role in pharmaceutical companies. In addition to this, the students also learned about the jobs private company offers to the aquaculture sector. After this, the students were given a brief look at business opportunities in the aquaculture health sector and a summary of the production cycle in the salmon and tilapia industry focused on the critical points for disease prevention. The students then visited the R&D Department, where they learned how new products are researched from scratch, and the biological production plants.
