The vermiform appendix is a blind-ended tube that projects from the cecum. The term vermiform comes from Latin and it means worm-shaped. Thus, the vermiform appendix is a projection that is worm-shaped connected to the cecum. The average size of a human vermiform appendix is about 9 cm in length whereas the diameter is generally between 7 and 8 mm. It is often found in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Its position corresponds to the so-called McBurneys point. For herbivores, the vermiform appendix is essential since it is responsible for the breaking down of cellulose present in the cell wall of plants. In humans and other animals, it became a redundant process since it has no particular daily function. Nevertheless, it is postulated to be associated with maintaining gut flora, particularly during a recovery from diarrhea.1 ...

Appendix with acute inflammatory response Normal Appendix Note the abundant blue-staining lymphoid tissue beneath the mucosal layer and the absence of blue-staining cells in the submucosal layer in the normal appendix. Compare this with the extensive distribution of cells in the appendix with acute appendicitis. The blue color is due to the presence of many inflammatory cells, although at this low power the individual cells cannot be specifically identified.

or caecal] appendix; vermix; or vermiform process) is a blind-ended tube connected to the cecum, from which it develops embryologically. The cecum is a pouchlike structure of the colon, located at the junction of the small and thelarge intestines. The appendix has more recently been identified as an important component of mammalian mucosal immune function, particularly B-lymphocyte-mediated immune responses and extrathymically derived T-lymphocytes. This structure helps in the proper movement and removal of waste matter in the digestive system, contains lymphatic vessels that regulate pathogens, and lastly, might even produce early defences that prevent deadly diseases. Additionally, it is thought that this may provide more immune defences from invading pathogens and getting the lymphatic systems B and T-cells to fight the viruses and bacteria that infect that portion of the bowel and training them, so that immune responses are targeted and more able to reliably and less dangerously fight off ...

In this study, we have shown the presence of ET-1-positive stromal cells and pp-ET-1 mRNA-expressing cells and demonstrated their different distributions and relative frequencies in normal control appendix, histologically normal appendix, and inflamed appendix. In particular, a subgroup of histologically normal appendixes from patients with a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis had an increased number of ET-1-positive stromal cells and elevated pp-ET-1 mRNA expression, similar to the inflamed appendix. However, in this subgroup of histologically normal appendixes, there were more immunoreactive cells in the lamina propria than in the submucosa and muscularis, whereas the converse was true of inflamed appendix (more immunoreactive cells in the muscularis and submucosa than in the lamina propria). The lower incidence of positive cells in the mucosa of inflamed appendixes may be attributed to partial or complete destruction of the lamina propria by the inflammatory process.. Furthermore, our ...
Now here comes the screwed up part! About 30 minutes later (after I already wrote an e-mail to Romys thesis adviser that he couldnt go into work because he will be getting his appendix removed that day), another doctor comes in. This doctor said something we could not believe. He asked us to confirm that Romy had a CAT scan taken for the same reason one year ago in February. We said yes. Then he kind of smiled and said that the previous doctor had looked at the February 2012 CAT scan by mistake and ordered the puss and appendix removal based on the FEBRUARY scan!!! It was only after they realized they were looking at the old CAT scan (which was supposedly just constipation!?), that they recognized how bad Romy was that day. The new CAT scan revealed a badly ruptured appendix. His appendix was ruptured so badly that they canceled the puss suction and the appendix removal. All the doctor could say was that the new CAT scan was very "messed up." Puss, scar tissue, and fluid everywhere. He said ...
In fact, even Charles Darwin said the appendix is a vestigial organ," or one that has become essentially useless over time ~ a concept that is still spouted in biology textbooks to this day.. Recently, however, researchers from Duke University Medical Center have made a very good case for why your appendix may actually be incredibly important. Writing in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, they point out that an appendix "has been maintained in mammalian evolution for 80 million years or longer.". The fact that it has been around for so long, surviving species changes and also existing in a wide variety of species (70 percent of all primate and rodent groups contain species with an appendix, according to the Duke researchers) suggests it plays a critical function in survival... but what?. Well, last year researchers discovered that your appendix actually produces good bacteria and helps protect good bacteria in your gut.. This is especially important if you were to be infected with an illness ...

Mucocele of the appendix is a rare complication associated with the vermiform appendix, which mimics or complicates appendicitis. Gangrene of the Appendiceal mucocele, following torsion, is a very rare occurrence. It requires surgical excision and, if ruptured, can lead to fatal Pseudomyxoma peritonei. We report a case of a middle aged male patient, who presented with acute appendicitis, and on surgical exploration, was found to have a large, gangrenous mucocele of the appendix, which had undergone torsion ...
Chimpanzees and other apes are our closest living relatives, and they all have an appendix that looks a lot like ours. So its reasonable to infer that our common ancestor 30 million years ago also had one.. But when Dr. Fisher researched the guts of other primates, the picture got blurrier. "In some cases its absent, but in other cases its spot-on looking like a human appendix," she said.. Some primate species fall somewhere in between these two extremes, with just a narrowed tip forming on the cecum. Dr. Fisher suspects that the appendix evolved several times in primates, but she cannot say what conditions favored its evolution. "Since the data is so poor, I think any trend would just be a lucky happenstance," she said.. Still, I wondered how such a dangerous and disposable organ could survive over evolutionary time. "We consider it maladaptive because we want to live to a very old age," Dr. Fisher said. "But from a strictly Darwinian view, it might not be.". Imagine a trait that helps an ...

Primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare disease in clinical practice. Moreover, primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix in the pediatric age group is even rarer with very little cases being published. Here, we report a case of primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix with local invasion into adjacent organs in a child who was initially diagnosed as having an acute appendicitis. A 13-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain of 3-month duration. Imaging study showed a mass including the fecalith that occupied her pelvic and right lower abdominal cavity. Drainage of the abscess and appendectomy were performed by the preoperative diagnosis of an acute appendicitis with an appendiceal mass. Postoperative histopathological examinations revealed the appendiceal adenocarcinoma. She then received the whole mass resection, ileocecal resection with lymph node dissection. The masses were tightly adherent with infiltration into the sigmoid colon, uterus, and right ovary. These organs were all dissected, and
Thats interesting: the only groups that have an appendix are the Glires (rodents and rabbits), primates, monotremes, and some marsupials. Theres definitely a pattern to the distribution: it is not the case that the appendix is a random glitch in the organization of the gut, but is maintained consistently in some lineages for as long as 80 million years, and is consistently lost in others.. The data are useful to have and provide considerable food for thought; where I disagree with the authors is in the interpretation of that data. I dont think purely morphological data give us enough information to resolve the issues they bring up.. Heres what the authors conclude from that distribution. The most parsimonious explanation is that the ancestral state of mammals was to lack an appendix, so that the majority of extant mammals are exhibiting the primitive, appendix-less state. The appendix then independently evolved 2-4 times, with the lineages that acquired it also marked by frequent secondary ...

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Symptoms commonly include right lower abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. However, approximately 40% of people do not have these typical symptoms. Severe complications of a ruptured appendix include widespread, painful inflammation of the inner lining of the abdominal wall and sepsis. Appendicitis is caused by a blockage of the hollow portion of the appendix. This is most commonly due to a calcified "stone" made of feces. Inflamed lymphoid tissue from a viral infection, parasites, gallstone, or tumors may also cause the blockage. This blockage leads to increased pressures in the appendix, decreased blood flow to the tissues of the appendix, and bacterial growth inside the appendix causing inflammation. The combination of inflammation, reduced blood flow to the appendix and distention of the appendix causes tissue injury and tissue death. If this process is left untreated, the appendix may burst, releasing bacteria into the ...
Definition: Inflammation/Infection of the appendix. The appendix is a small extension of the intestine that is connected to the large intestine (colon). The appendix is usually located in the right lower side of the belly, and it is tubular in shape. Its length differs based on the age. The appendix has no known important function. Appendicitis is inflammation and infection of the appendix and often results from blockage of the appendix by stool (feces). Sometimes, the feces form a small stone called a fecalith. Other causes of appendicitis include swelling of lymph tissues within the appendix wall because of recent infection. Sometimes worms can also block the appendix. Once blockage of the appendix occurs, several things happen ...
An infected appendix gradually fills with pus and swells. As it is in its inflamed state, it causes significant pain and discomfort to the body through lethal symptoms. If the pain from these symptoms is bad enough, they could cause the patient to go into shock. As the disease of the appendix grows worse without proper treatment, it ultimately explodes, dealing a significant damage to the body. Not many patients survive after the appendix has exploded. That is why patients need to have their appendix surgically remove, as is the only sure treatment of appendicitis, to prevent such unfortunate event. This surgical operation is called appendectomy. Since there has been no apparent use for the appendix as studied, there is no harm in the removal of the appendix.. Appendicitis is truly a dangerous disease. Most of the times, it takes weeks before the appendix succumbs to the infection and explodes. But there are also cases in which the appendix explode as early as 24 hours after the symptoms show. ...

All laboratory appendices should be interpreted with caution since normal values differ widely among clinical laboratories. The values given in this Appendix are meant primarily for use with this text. In preparing the Appendix, the editors have taken into account the fact that the system of international units (SI, syst_me international dunités) is now used in most countries and in most medical and scientific journals.1 However, clinical laboratories in many countries continue to report values in traditional units. Therefore, both systems are used in the Appendix. Values in SI units appear first, and traditional units appear in parentheses after the SI units. The dual system is also used in the text except for (1) those instances in which the numbers remain the same but only the terminology is changed (mmol/L for meq/L or IU/L for mIU/mL), when only the SI units are given; and (2) most pressure measurements (e.g., blood and ...
... The appendix, a small portion of the large intestine, can become infected, causing a condition known as appendicitis. Typical symptoms of appendicitis include pain in the right side of the abdomen (near the navel, then progressing lower and to the right), abdominal swelling, nausea, vomiting, disruption of normal bowel movement, and a low fever that appears after the other symptoms.. The treatment the doctors usually prescribe is the removal of the appendix through an appendectomy. In some cases, they perform laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure using specially designed scopes and instruments.. ...
Mucocele of the appendix is rare and represents only the tip of the iceberg of underlying benign and malignant pathological processes. Intraoperative diagnosis is also tricky because the inflammation of the appendix often hides the tumor. The preoperative diagnosis is essential to differentiate appendiceal mucocele from acute appendicitis as the treatment varies from open surgical versus laparoscopic surgical approach and for decreasing intraoperative and postoperative morbidity and mortality rate. We present three cases of appendiceal mucocele. The purpose of this paper is to make the physicians aware of the entity, its associations and the effect on management. This review will provide radiologic and pathologic correlation for the preoperative diagnosis of benign and malignant causative processes and differential diagnostic considerations.

The right-angle clamp is moved 1 cm toward the tip of the appendix. Just at the proximal edge of the crushed portion, the appendix is ligated (Figure 14) and a straight clamp is placed on the knot. A purse-string suture is laid in the wall of the cecum at the base of the appendix, care being taken not to perforate blood vessels where the mesentery of the appendix was attached (Figure 15). The appendix is held upward; the cecum is walled off with moist gauze to prevent contamination; and the appendix is divided between the ligature and clamp (Figure 16). The suture on the base of the appendix is cut and pushed inward with the straight clamp on the ligature of the stump to invaginate the stump into the cecal wall. The jaws of the clamp are separated, and the clamp is removed as the purse-string suture is tied. The wall of the cecum may be fixed with tissue forceps to aid in inverting the appendiceal stump (Figure 17). The cecum then appears as shown in Figure 18. The area is lavaged with warm ...

Other than the tip of appendix rest of the structure was not harmed. The tip had mildly injected which lead to no serious concerns. Luckily, there were no signs of appendicitis. This happens when the bolus is passing through the large intestine. Only when the foreign body is heavier than the bolus it causes the bolus to slow down and stop temporarily in the intestines. During that time the foreign body, such as razor blades, enters the lumen of appendix. As soon as the substance enters the appendix it is unable to get back into the colon due to negligible peristalsis. Sharp objects usually cause perforations. The patient in this case is fortunate to have no perforation. In order to relieve pain surgical removal of the two razor blades from appendix was approved. By following the laparoscopic surgical technique the razor blades were efficiently removed from the appendix. In this technique, the appendix is first skeletonized very well. Skeletonizing appendix means to remove the serosal tissues ...

Scientists have long pondered the evolutionary purpose of the appendix, a tiny organ attached to the intestine that sometimes becomes inflamed and has to be surgically removed. Bill Parker, assistant professor of experimental surgery at Duke, believes he and his colleagues have stumbled upon the answer. As a biochemist and immunologist, Parker studies immune-system functions on a microscopic level. Since the mid-1990s, his research has focused on the way that the immune system interacts with the good bacteria that live in the gut. According to his theory, the appendix plays a key role in sheltering those bacteria in times of crisis, thereby helping the system to re-boot. He took a break from dissecting a rabbit appendix in the lab to answer some questions.. So how does the appendix work?. The idea is that the appendix is a safe house or a storehouse, even a cultivation center for the normal, beneficial bacteria that our gut needs. That safe house would be necessary and useful in the event that ...
