The primary aim of this study is to examine the association between obesity and diabetes and to estimate the cost of diabetes linked to obesity in the Appalachian region. A system of simultaneous equations approach, and a logit estimation are employed for the analyses. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys for 2001 and 2009 are the main sources of data. Both county-level and individual-level data are used for the analyses. The simultaneous approach at county-level based on the changes of income, employment, obesity, and diabetes reveals that obesity increases diabetes, but diabetes does not have an effect on obesity. The counties with high initial levels of obesity had less obesity growth but more diabetes growth. Increasing income impacts negatively on diabetes growth. Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), an introduced vine from southeast Asia, has become a serious threat to native forests in the eastern United States. It is typical of many exotic species in that quantitative ecological relationships are unavailable for assessment or management. We devised a rapid survey technique useful for hazard rating and modeled the probability of occurrence of oriental bittersweet in relation to environment, competition, and disturbance in stands of deciduous hardwoods in mountainous terrain. Oriental bittersweet was present on 39% of the study area, which has been managed by the selection system of silviculture and was recently disturbed by hurricane-force winds. Bittersweet was significantly associated with (1) topographic variables indicative of mesic environments, (2) density of midstory arborescent vegetation, (3) overstory canopy gaps, (4) past silvicultural harvests, (5) overstory canopy composition, and (5) scarification of the forest floor. Rosebay rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum L.) is an evergreen ericaceous shrub that plays a dynamic role in the southern Appalachian forests. Commonly located on mesic sites, this understory shrub forms dense thickets that greatly reduce the amount of light available to herbaceous and woody plants found on the forest floor. Past research has shown that silvicultural methods can be used to eradicate R. maximum, however it is unclear which of these methods is most efficient and what effects other than stem mortality may occur. In this study, treatments involving prescribed fire, mechanical cutting, and herbicide applications were applied to R. maximum dominated forests in southwestern Virginia to determine what effect seven different silvicultural treatments had on 1) controlling of R. maximum as a forest weed 2) fuel loading inside of a R. maximum thicket, and 3) canopy tree seedling regeneration. Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma incidence and mortality rates are the rise in the United States and in Kentucky as well. According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be an estimated 40,710 new cases of liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer and 28,920 deaths in 2017, with than 20% of 5-years survivors 1. The numbers of new cases expected by year 2030 is 37,574 2. The aim of this capstone is to assess the risk factors of late-stage diagnosis and survivability in Kentucky. Methods: A combined dataset from the Kentucky Cancer Registry and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was used to perform a descriptive statistics, a logistic regression and a Cox proportional-hazards regression. Results: Of the 2,205 cases analyzed, 72.1% were males, 90.2% of white/other ethnicity, 41.1% were married and lived mostly in urban (59.5%0 and non-Appalachian region (72.1%). Their mean age at diagnosis was 64.1 years and most were diagnosed between 2005 and 2009 (81.5%) with late-stage (41.9%)

This research project was designed to demonstrate the contributions that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis procedures can make to the study of crime patterns in a largely nonmetropolitan region of the United States. Most cancer organizations agree that women of normal risk who have had no previous breast symptoms or problems should begin getting mammograms every 1-2 years starting at age 40. (In this stance, DBCC joins other organizations including Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute.) Previously, almost all organizations agreed on these guidelines. However, in late 2009, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) changed their recommendation. Since then the USPSTF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise that women ages 40-49 talk to their doctor about when they should begin screening and how often and that women ages 50 and older have screening mammograms every 2 years.
