Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is one of the most economically important vegetables worldwide, but genetic and genomic resources supporting celery molecular breeding are quite limited, thus few studies on celery have been conducted so far. In this study we made use of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers generated from previous celery transcriptome sequencing and attempted to detect the genetic diversity and relationships of commonly used celery accessions and explore the efficiency of the primers used for cultivars identification. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) of Apium graveolens L. var. dulce showed that approximately 43% of genetic diversity was within accessions, 45% among accessions, and 22% among horticultural types. The neighbor-joining tree generated by unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA), and population structure analysis, as well as principal components analysis (PCA), separated the cultivars into clusters corresponding to the geographical areas where they
Celery seed contains two oils, one heavy and the other light, as well as a substance called apiol. Recently, science has started to investigate the value of this herbal seed.

Objectives:Hypertension is one of the most common diseases of the modern era. This study evaluates the effect of hydro-alcoholic celery leaf extract onsystolic blood pressure (SBP), heart rate (HR) and lipid profile in animals model of hypertension induced by fructose. Materials and Methods: Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups: 1) control group (free access to tap drinking water), 2) group receiving 200mg/kg celery leaf extract, 3) group receiving fructose 10, and 4,5) receiving fructose and 100mg/kg or 200mg/kg of extract (n=8). In all groups, before and during the test period, SBP and HR were measured by Power lab system. Lipid profiles were determined by auto analysis. Repeated measurement and one way ANOVA were used for data analysis. PResults:The SBP in the fructose group significantly increased compared to control group (P,0.01). SBP, in groups receiving fructose+100mg/kg extract, fructose and receiving 200mg/kg extract, and receiving 200mg/kg of extract, compared to ...

Celery (Apium graveolens L.), one of the most important vegetables in Apiaceae family, is cultivated worldwide and utilized in food and cosmetic industries because it is an excellent source of vitamins, phenolic compounds, volatile oils and other nutrients. Celery extracts possess various medicinal properties, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and lowering blood glucose and serum lipid levels. With the rapid advancements in molecular biology and sequencing technology, studies on celery have been performed. Numerous molecular markers and regulatory genes have been discovered and applied to improve celery. Research advances, including genetic breeding, genomics research, function genes and chemical composition, regarding celery are reviewed in this paper. Further exploration and application trends are briefly described. This review provides a reference for basic and applied research on celery, an important Apiaceae vegetable crop.

vi. Structure and content: The walls are thickened by high amounts of pectin and hemicellulose. Protein and cellulose are also present. Primary pit fields can be distinguished in the walls. The cellulose microfibrils are either oriented transversely or alternately transverse and longitudinal. The longitudinal microfibrils may also alternate with noncellulosic materials, as is revealed by electron microscopic study with the petiole of Apium graveolens. The composition of these alternating layers varies. One layer is rich in cellulose and poor in pectin; the alternate layer is pectin-rich and cellulose-poor. It is now suggested that the visible lamellation of the cell wall of collenchyma is due to composition and orientation of microfibrils at alternate layers. Usually lignin is completely absent. ...
On the other hand, when comparing the effects of ammonium bicarbonate in controlling C. echinulatum to its effects against other pathogens evaluated in other tests, it seems quite ineffective. In celery (Apium graveolens var. secalinum), ammonium bicarbonate was the most effective product in septoria control (Septoria apiicola) in vitro, exceeding sodium bicarbonate used at 1.0, 0.5 and 0.25% concentrations (Salazar, 2001). Similar results were found by Ziv and Zitter (1992) in the control of disease agents of horticultura! species such as Sphaerotheca fuliginea, Didymella bryoniae, Alternaría cucumerina and Ulocladium cucurbitae when using ammonium bicarbonate at 1% (p/v).. Ammonium bicarbonate plus mineral oil seems to be more effective than sodium bicarbonate mixed with mineral oil. This was evident by the lack of healing activity of sodium bicarbonate plus mineral oil. However, it is noteworthy that sodium bicarbonate and mineral oil at 0.01% (v/v) alone or combined reduced the incidence of ...

American foulbrood (AFB, Histolysis infectiosa perniciosa larvae apium, Pestis americana larvae apium), caused by the spore-forming Paenibacillus larvae ssp. larvae (formerly classified as Bacillus larvae), is the most widespread and destructive of the bee brood diseases. Paenibacillus larvae is a rod-shaped bacterium, which is visible only under a high power microscope. Larvae up to 3 days old become infected by ingesting spores that are present in their food. Young larvae less than 24 hours old are most susceptible to infection. Spores germinate in the gut of the larva and the vegetative form of the bacteria begins to grow, taking its nourishment from the larva. Spores will not germinate in larvae over 3 days old. Infected larvae normally die after their cell is sealed. The vegetative form of the bacterium will die but not before it produces many millions of spores. Each dead larva may contain as many as 100 million spores. This disease only affects the bee larvae but is highly infectious and ...

Daniel Zohary and Maria Hopf[33] note that celery leaves and inflorescences were part of the garlands found in the tomb of pharaoh Tutankhamun (died 1323 BC), and celery mericarps dated to the seventh century BC were recovered in the Heraion of Samos. However, they note "since A. graveolens grows wild in these areas, it is hard to decide whether these remains represent wild or cultivated forms." Only by classical times is it certain that celery was cultivated. M. Fragiska mentions an archeological find of celery dating to the 9th century BC, at Kastanas; however, the literary evidence for ancient Greece is far more abundant. In Homers Iliad, the horses of the Myrmidons graze on wild celery that grows in the marshes of Troy, and in Odyssey, there is mention of the meadows of violet and wild celery surrounding the cave of Calypso.[34] In the Capitulary of Charlemagne, compiled ca. 800, apium appears, as does olisatum, or alexanders, among medicinal herbs and vegetables the Frankish emperor ...
