Most commonly validated self-report measures were the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS). Of the 30 studies included, 11 used a clinical interview to provide criterion validity. Remaining studies reported one or more other forms of validity (factorial, discriminant, concurrent and predictive) or reliability. The STAI shows criterion, discriminant and predictive validity and may be most useful for research purposes as a specific measure of anxiety. The Kessler 10 (K-10) may be the best short screening measure due to its ability to differentiate anxiety disorders. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21 (DASS-21) measures multiple types of distress, shows appropriate content, and remains to be validated against clinical interview in perinatal populations.. ...
Aim. The aim of this study was to determine whether the trait anxiety scores and age of children could predict their state anxiety scores under stressful and relaxing situations. Background. Surgery can cause considerable stress and anxiety that can have a profound effect on children. It is crucial for nurses to differentiate preoperative anxiety levels in children and to identify those children who are most likely to exhibit high levels of anxiety when undergoing surgery before any intervention can be appropriately planned, provided and evaluated. Methods. A test-retest within subjects design was used. Five hundred and nineteen primary school-age children were invited to participate in the study. Participants were asked to respond to the Chinese version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children under stressful (pre-academic examination) and relaxing (post-academic examination) situations. Result. Multiple regression analysis showed that the trait anxiety of children was a strong ...
Which is High Anxiety Disorder? - symptoms, consequences, and ways it can be treated. Fear is not something from which we are born. Despite of many outside factors, we obtain it. We fall victim to it even though we subconsciously welcome it sometimes. But we seldom know that fear can also surface in the most remarkable ways.. Join the case with a highly successful anxiety disorder. That makes it fascinating is that not only patients do not care about their suffering, they can even mislead people in creating an illusion of normalcy without realizing it, but effectively.. The pattern and practice of carrying out activities to prevent the manifestation of recurrent anxiety symptoms in the external environment can be described as a highly functioning anxiety condition.. To resolve this psychological mystery, we must immerse ourselves deeply in the telling signs of the enigmatic disorders which the institutions of mental health have so far overlooked.. There are other telling symptoms of anxiety ...

BACKGROUND: Correlations between asthma and anxiety and between anxiety and balance disorders have been repeatedly described. These observations suggest that equilibrium abnormalities may also be present in asthmatic patients. This issue is clinically relevant because untreated postural deficits can potentially worsen the prognosis of asthma by triggering anxiety and, consequently, respiratory symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of postural control in asthma patients and its potential correlation with anxiety symptoms. METHODS: We compared 30 subjects with persistent, controlled asthma to 30 age- and sex-matched controls. Anxiety symptoms were evaluated using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Balance control was evaluated by dynamic posturography using measurements of the center of pressure (CoP) displacement in the latero-lateral and antero-posterior directions. RESULTS: The asthma group had significantly higher scores for the STAI-State (46.8 ± 11.38 ...

Anxiety and arrhythmia is not a one way street. Arrhythmia can also cause significant anxiety. Many things can lead to benign (not dangerous) arrhythmia, including exercise, dehydration, diet/caffeine, etc. Also, those that suffer from very minor stress or those that are thinking about their heart too often may be more prone to arrhythmia - even when theyre not suffering from anxiety at the time.. Unfortunately, those with anxiety are highly prone to suffering from extreme anxiety and panic attacks when an arrhythmia occurs as they worry about the health of their heart. After suffering from an arrhythmia, many with anxiety are also more prone to worrying about the arrhythmia again, thus causing further anxiety and greater risk of arrhythmia.. As you can see, it can create a very troubling cycle that can make it harder and hard to cope. Often arrhythmia is one of the primary reasons that an individuals anxiety starts to get out of hand.. ...

AIM: To compare anxiety symptoms in adolescents born extremely prematurely to term-born controls.. METHODS: We had 96 preterm-born adolescents and 40 term-born controls from Denmark, and their mothers score the adolescents on the Revised Children Anxiety and Depression scale. We analysed group differences, cross-informant correlations and relative risks for elevated anxiety symptoms.. RESULTS: Self-reported anxiety symptoms did not significantly differ, although the upper confidence limit (95% CI: -3.3 to 5.1) supported an odds ratio of 2 for the preterm-born participants. Mothers of the preterm-born participants reported higher social anxiety symptoms than did mothers of controls (51.7 versus 46.8, p = 0.001). The relative risk for being above a threshold indicating distressing anxiety was small from self-reports (1.39; p = 0.60). From mother-reports, the relative risk was noticeable but not significant (4.58; p = 0.14). Cross-informant scores correlated significant for total anxiety and social ...
The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of a potential treatment for anxiety due to the need for easily obtainable and inexpensive options. The study tested the anxiolytic effects of lavender oil on rats experiencing severe anxiety induced by predator odor in 12 female rats. Prior to being tested, six control rats were exposed to diffused water, while six experimental rats were exposed to diffused lavender. Anxiety was induced in the same rats using bobcat urine and was observed in the open-field and elevated plus-maze tests using behavioral measures of anxiety. The anxiety responses in the open-field test were measured as rearing, defecating, climbing walls, freezing, grooming, and spending time near walls. The elevated plus-maze measured rearing, grooming, number of closed arm entries, and time spent in the open and closed arms. Administering lavender oil did not significantly reduce anxiety-like behavior in the openfield test, but in the elevated plus-maze, experimental ...

The factor structure of Form Y of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y) was examined with 1,862 Japanese adult workers (1,509 men, 353 women). The initial principal component analysis extracted three factors based on the scree test. All 20 state (S-Anxiety) and 20 trait (T-Anxiety) items had dominant salient loadings on the first factor, which reflected over-all anxiety. The three factors identified by an oblique (promax) rotation were labeled anxiety-absent, state anxiety-present, and trait anxiety-present. All 20 items with dominant salient loadings on the first oblique factor were clearly grouped on the basis of their content, indicating the absence of anxiety. The second and third oblique factors, defined almost entirely by the STAI-Y anxiety-present items, clearly reflected the state-trait distinction in this sample of Japanese workers.

The relationship between anxiety and dietary fat quality (DFQ) has not been well studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between anxiety disorder and fatty acids intake in women. This cross-sectional study included 300 women aged 18-49 attending healthcare centers. Dietary exposure was measured by a 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). To determine the status of anxiety, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire was used. Based on the total score of anxiety, the participants were divided into two groups of without anxiety (| 8) and with anxiety (≥ 8). The relationship between fatty acids intake and odd ratio (OR) for anxiety was analyzed by simple logistic regression. About 37.7% of individuals reported anxiety. After adjustment for covariates, an increase in the OR for anxiety was observed across the quintuples of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) (OR 3.17; 95% CI 1.43-7.00; p-trend = 0.005). In addition, higher intakes of

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer patients and their partners report high rates of distress. Although distress is of importance, psychiatric disorders might be more important in terms of prognostic value and additional psychological treatment. This study examined the suitability of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Distress Thermometer (DT), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and State subscale of State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) to screen for psychiatric disorders in lung cancer patients and partners. METHODS: A consecutive sample of lung cancer patients and partners completed the screening instruments. The Structured Clinical Interview DSM-IV (SCID-I) was used to diagnose psychiatric axis I disorders. RESULTS: In 144 patients, overall ability of HADS total score (HADS-T) screening for patients with psychiatric disorders was good, whereas DT appeared less suitable. In 98 partners, the performance of HADS-T was good. Although no instrument was successful in identifying psychiatric ...
There is evidence that anxiety and catastrophizing play a role in the development of CPSP, and anxiety measures should be incorporated in future studies investigating the prediction and transition from acute to chronic postoperative pain. Objectives:Anxiety and pain catastrophizing predict acute postoperative pain. However, it is not well established whether they also predict chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP). The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate whether high levels of preoperative anxiety or pain catastrophizing are associated with an increased risk of CPSP. Methods:Electronic search databases included PubMed and PsychINFO. Additional literature was obtained by reference tracking and expert consultation. Studies from 1958 until October 2010, investigating the association between preoperative anxiety or pain catastrophizing and CPSP in adult surgery patients, were assessed. The primary outcome was the presence of pain at least 3 months postoperatively. Results:Twenty

Objective: There is a high incidence of distressing psychological symptoms including anxiety in pregnancy. Nevertheless, predictors of distress and anxiety during pregnancy have not been well characterized. We determined whether temperament and character, trait anxiety, resilience, and social support predicted distress and anxiety symptoms in pregnancy. Method: Pregnant women (n=105) with low risk singleton pregnancies were recruited from Midwife Obstetric Units. Assessments of distress (using the K-10) and anxiety (using the Spielberger State Inventory) were undertaken in trimester 2 and 3. Measures of temperament and character, trait anxiety, resilience and social support were undertaken at the same time points. Regression analyses were used to determine predictors of distress and anxiety at each trimester. Results: Predictors of distress and anxiety were lower selfdirectedness, higher harm avoidance, higher trait anxiety, lower resilience, and lower social support, at each time point. Conclusion:
The hypothesis of this research study was: Adult surgical patients who receive preoperative teaching based on adult learning principles will exhibit less fear/anxiety than patients who have had incidental preoperative teaching. The research employed a pretest - post test control group design. Twenty subjects admitted to a private hospital for Arthroscopy or Dilation and Curettage - Laparoscopy were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. Demographic data, subjective (State - Trait Anxiety Inventory) and objective (heart rate and blood pressure) data were obtained before and after structure preoperative teaching. The analysis of co-variance program of the Social Science Statistical Package was used to analysis the subjective and objective measures of fear/anxiety. The , .05 level of significance was selected to evaluate the findings. The data analysis indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups. BACKGROUND: Anxiety is the most common psychiatric condition in children and adolescents, and is linked to significant disruptions across domains of function. Due to the avoidant nature of anxiety and pain-related disability, studying anxiety symptoms in children with chronic and recurrent pain conditions is important.OBJECTIVES: To examine anxiety symptoms in a large cohort of children and adolescents evaluated for complex chronic and recurrent pain conditions.METHODS: Through retrospective chart review, data on anxiety, pain and functional disability were collected from 655 children evaluated at a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a three-year period.RESULTS: Approximately 11% of children and adolescents reported clinically elevated anxiety symptoms, with elevated levels across dimensions of anxiety ranging from 14% (social anxiety, worry) to 27% (physiological). In addition, a notable 31% of the sample potentially minimized their anxiety by responding in a socially desirable
When a person with GAD begins to become anxious, it will cause them to have restless sleep, go into depressions, have a change in eating habits, or even have attacks of anxiety.. Someone coping with GAD may only have a few episodes of anxiety a month. But these flares are intense and can leave the person feeling physically exhausted.. Things like bills, finances, job, relationships, etc. can cause severe anxiety in someone with GAD. While these things cause stress for almost everyone, someone struggling with general anxiety wont be able to stop thinking about these things. They will worry about these things to the point that they cannot sleep, work, or function as they normally would.. Common Types of Anxiety #2 - Chronic Anxiety. Chronic anxiety is much more severe than general anxiety. Chronic anxiety does not end and it does not go away. ASTH consists of 6 sessions of individual treatment, each lasting approximately 75 minutes over 3 weeks. In general, each session consists of the following components1) psychoeducation regarding the anxiety response, with a focus on increasing awareness of the ways in which the patient interprets or evaluates that response 2) assistance in developing healthy emotion regulation strategies that can be used to increase acceptance and tolerance of the anxiety response (including associated catastrophic thoughts), as well as understanding the consequences associated with avoidance or control of anxiety 3) a minimum of 3 interoceptive exercises tailored to activate feared anxiety-related sensations and 4) daily homework assignments (i.e., daily anxiety monitoring and interoceptive exercises ...
There is more to anxiety than just nervous thoughts. Anxiety causes significant physical symptoms. For example, some of these symptoms (such as a pounding heart and tensed muscles) are triggered by the activation of your fight or flight system. Others are triggered by how you behave in response to your anxiety (for example, trying to take faster breaths when you feel like youre hyperventilating, thus making the hyperventilation worse).. Some anxiety is normal and natural. Fearfulness can help keep you safe from harm. But when your fight or flight system is activated inappropriately, even when you havent been confronted with a realistically threatening situation, thats when you may be suffering from a diagnosable anxiety problem. One of the symptoms that may accompany anxiety conditions is a rapid change in body temperature (although if you experience this symptom, thats not necessarily enough to say that you have an anxiety disorder, as compared to an appropriate anxiety response). ...
The current research examines whether trait anxiety is associated with negative interpretation bias when resolving valence ambiguity of surprised faces. To further isolate the neuro-cognitive mechanism, we presented angry, happy, and surprised faces at broad, high, and low spatial frequency and asked participants to determine the valence of each face. High trait anxiety was associated with more negative interpretations of broad spatial frequency (i.e., intact) surprised faces. However, the modulation of trait anxiety on the negative interpretation of surprised faces disappeared at high and low spatial frequencies. The current study provides evidence that trait anxiety modulates negative interpretations of broad spatial frequency surprised faces. However, the negative interpretation of low spatial frequency surprised faces appears to be a robust default response that occurs regardless of individual differences in trait anxiety.

Abstract: An understanding of the differential roles played by emotions and cognitions in child anxiety cannot be abstracted from the existing literature. The current study sought to delineate the relationship between cognitive development and the experience of anxiety in children by examining emotion understanding, cognitive errors, verbal ability, and non-verbal ability in relation to child general and social anxiety. Results indicate the relationship between emotion understanding and child anxiety varied for high and low abstract reasoning groups. Emotion understanding and cognitive errors were also more strongly related to social anxiety than general anxiety. Furthermore, verbal abilities were correlated negatively with anxiety and correlated positively with emotion understanding. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.--Abstract from author supplied metadata.. Anxiety can be an appropriate or inappropriate response to threats of many types. An appropriate response would be to become anxious regarding threatening circumstances (physical, emotional, financial threats). In this case, taking immediate action to reduce the threat would be appropriate. If the threat is going to be prolonged and can not be changed, then how the threat is viewed must be changed to reduce the likely mental and health consequences.. Simple anxiety commonly results from chronic stress. Stress is a fairly routine part of everyday life. However, when stress becomes overwhelming and begins to impair ones ability to function and maintain relationships it might reflect a mental health issue known as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) or Anxiety. Anxiety (GAD) is characterized by chronic stress and worrying excessively, especially when overwhelming concern is unwarranted. Anxiety can result in panic attacks, avoidance of social interactions and a general lack of emotional tolerance for everyday activities and interactions. Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental health issues in the United States and encompasses Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Phobias, among others.. For millions of Americans, Anxiety can radically interfere with everyday life-limiting job and school performance, diminishing the ability to connect with others and creating a lingering sense of isolation. Overall, 13 NICUs provided FICare (one of 14 discontinued due to poor enrollment) and 12 provided standard care. There were 895 infants eligible for the FICare group and 891 eligible for the standard care group. Age of enrollment was similar between the two groups, although the authors noted that a larger portion of infants in the FICare group were born between 22 and 28 weeks versus the usual care group, and more parents in that group self-identified as Caucasian.. The difference in infant weight gain between the two groups was significant, even after adjusting for confounders, and the authors said that weight gain in the FICare group increased faster and remained higher during 21 days.. Parental stress scores were assessed via the Parental Stressor Scale: NICU and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Baseline scores between the two groups were similar, and both were lower on day 21, but the FICare group had significantly lower stress and anxiety scores versus the standard care group.. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is a psychological inventory based on a 4-point Likert scale and consists of 40 questions on a self-report basis. The STAI measures two types of anxiety - state anxiety, or anxiety about an event, and trait anxiety, or anxiety level as a personal characteristic. Higher scores are positively correlated with higher levels of anxiety. Its most current revision is Form Y and it is offered in 12 languages. It was developed by psychologists Charles Spielberger, R.L. Gorsuch, and R.E. Lushene. Their goal in creating the inventory was to create a set of questions that could be applied towards assessing different types of anxiety. This was a new development because all other questionnaires focused on one type of anxiety at the time.[citation needed] Spielberger also created other questionnaires, like the STAI, that assessed other emotions. These are the State-Trait Anger Scale (STAS), State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), and the State-Trait Anxiety ...
Introduction: Anxiety is a common disorder in patients before surgery. Inappropriately managed anxiety can cause psychological and physiological reactions and will affect the process of surgery and recovery. Therefore, this study examined the effects of hand massage on anxiety in patients undergoing ophthalmology surgery using local anesthesia. Methods: In this interventional study, 52 patients who were supposed to undergo ophthalmology surgery using local anesthesia were studied. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups of intervention, who received hand massage before surgery (n = 27) and control (n = 25). Massaging lasted for 5 minutes (2.5 minutes on each hand) before surgery. Stroking and scrubbing methods were performed by 2 trained researchers. Anxiety level, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were measured before and after the intervention in both groups. Anxiety was evaluated using Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Data was analyzed by chi-square, independent samples

Trait anxiety was measured with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y-2. Posttraumatic stress symptoms were measured at three and six months after ICU discharge using the Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms 10-Question Inventory. Clinical and demographical data were also collected. Mixed effect regression models were used to determine if state and trait anxiety were factors significantly associated with posttraumatic ...
Social anxiety can be defined as nervousness in social situations. Some disorders associated with the social anxiety spectrum include anxiety disorders, mood disorders, autism, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. Individuals higher in social anxiety avert their gazes, show fewer facial expressions, and show difficulty with initiating and maintaining conversation. Trait social anxiety, the stable tendency to experience this nervousness, can be distinguished from state anxiety, the momentary response to a particular social stimulus. Nearly 90% of individuals report feeling a form of social anxiety (i.e., shyness) at some point in their lives. Half of the individuals with any social fears meet criteria for social anxiety disorder. The function of social anxiety is to increase arousal and attention to social interactions, inhibit unwanted social behavior, and motivate preparation for social situations such as performance situations. Feeling anxious and nervous in the daytime even when a direct cause is lacking? Then look to your sleep habits and next-day results. Sleep deprivation can cause and also can worsen daytime anxiety.. Sleep loss activates areas of the brain that are also activated during anxiety, says Jack B. Nitschke, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, School of Medicine.. Dr. Nitzsches suggestions are the standard stuff: Get eight or nine hours of sleep and avoid all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before going to bed. He also suggests jotting down your anxieties on paper, creating a checklist against reality, so to speak.. One of the natural cures for anxiety is also used as a sleep aid, and thats the herb kava. In a 2013 study, taking kava for six weeks was shown to ease anxiety for 26 percent of those reporting anxiety and participating in the study. Reportedly, the kava worked for up to six months thereafter.. Kava, however, is hard ...
One, in particular, that has been the subject of increased attention in the context of ADHD is anxiety disorder.(17,18) Indeed, a significant symptom overlap between the two conditions has been consistently observed. Among the symptoms common to both that may complicate diagnosis are restlessness/psychomotor agitation, concentration difficulties, decreased attention, increased distractibility, mood swings, and anger outbursts.(19) In a recent attempt to gain further insight into the implications of this symptom overlap, an investigation into the validity of two widely used ADHD and anxiety rating scales, the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory scales (STAI), was conducted. The authors of the study found that the CAARS and STAI had limited sensitivity and specificity in patients with comorbid ADHD and anxiety, and concluded that their application may be inadequate to differentially diagnose patients affected by both conditions. Based on their findings, the ...

While anxiety is the cardinal symptom in disorders such as panic disorder, co-morbid anxious behavior can occur in a variety of diseases. Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a CNS disorder characterized by increased muscle tone and prominent agoraphobia and anxiety. Most patients have high-titer antibodies against glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) 65. The pathogenic role of these autoantibodies is unclear. Methodology/Principal Findings: We re-investigated a 53 year old woman with SPS and profound anxiety for GABA-A receptor binding in the amygdala with (11) C-flumazenil PET scan and studied the potential pathogenic role of purified IgG from her plasma filtrates containing high-titer antibodies against GAD 65. We passively transferred the IgG fraction intrathecally into rats and analyzed the effects using behavioral and in vivo electrophysiological methods. In cell culture, we measured
Background Social anxiety is thought to be strongly related to maladaptive emotion regulation (ER). As social anxiety symptoms accumulate in families, we hypothesize that maladaptive ER is also more prevalent in families with anxious children. Thus, we analyze differences in emotion regulation of both child and mother in relation to social anxiety, as well as both their ER strategies in dealing with anxiety. Further, a positive relation between child and maternal ER strategies is assumed. Method Children (aged 9 to 13 years) with social, anxiety disorder (SAD; n = 25) and healthy controls (HC, n = 26) as well as their mothers completed several measures of social anxiety and trait ER strategies towards anxiety. As ER of children is still in development, age is considered as covariate. Results SAD children and their mothers reported more maladaptive ER strategies than HC dyads. Maternal maladaptive ER was related negatively to child adaptive ER which was further moderated by the childs age.

Everyone experiences situations in their life that cause them to feel anxious, such as a big job interview or starting school. However, when anxiety becomes debilitating, an individual may be suffering from an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is the most common mood disorder, affecting 1 in 5 adults or 20% of Americans, according The Solace Center website.. Anxiety disorders are characterized by feelings of worry that control or inhibit your daily life, including your job and relationships. Previous studies report frequent comorbidity of anxiety and sensory-motor imbalance in adults (Sklare et al., 2001). Only a few studies tested the comorbidity in children. We confirmed that: a) children with primary diagnosis of poor balance demonstrate an elevated anxiety level (Brat et al., 2006, submitted) and, b) children with primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder demonstrate poor balance performance (Erez et al., 2004). These studies demonstrate the presence of balance-anxiety comorbidity in children with primary disorder of either balance or anxiety. Our theoretical reasoning formalized under the three stage theory of learning points to the possibility that poor balance may either predispose or cause the emergence of anxiety disorder (Erez et al., 2004). Thus, in the present study we test two predictions: (a) high prevalence of comorbidity of anxiety and balance disorders in children with a primary diagnosis of generalized or separation anxiety disorder, and, (b) intensive ...
While other researchers have proposed a connection between this so-called anxiety sensitivity and a range of anxiety problems, the study by FSU psychology professors N. Brad Schmidt and Jon Maner and University of Vermont Professor Michael Zvolensky provides the first evidence that anxiety sensitivity is a risk factor in the development of anxiety disorders. The study will be published in the December issue of the Journal of Psychiatric Research.. The findings offer an exciting possibility for prevention of anxiety and panic reactions among high-risk individuals, Schmidt said, explaining that the key is to teach people cognitive and behavioral skills to reduce their anxiety sensitivity so that it does not lead to a serious problem.. People with anxiety sensitivity perceive their physical responses to certain triggers as a sign of imminent personal harm. They not only fear their reactions, they also fear that other people will detect their anxiety, which only serves to increase their anxiety ...

So this is a two-part question. First we will answer the question, when does anxiety become a disorder? Anxiety disorders are diagnosed by psychiatrists utilizing the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, with DSM-5 as the latest version (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). Anxiety disorders are clinical diagnoses, meaning they are diagnosed based on clinical history and patient interview. Psychiatry currently has no biological tests to confirm the diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. So with a clinical diagnosis of an anxiety disorder, multiple factors are analyzed to determine if a person has an anxiety disorder, which includes the following: number of symptoms, difficulty controlling the anxiety, duration, frequency, intensity and impact on daily living. Each of the anxiety disorders has a list of symptoms, and each has a threshold number to meet the criteria for the diagnosis. So if one has the minimum threshold number of symptoms, then an anxiety disorder is likely. ...

Math anxiety is an under-studied phenomenon, Menon said, which still lacks formally established diagnostic criteria. Tests for math anxiety ask people about their emotional responses to situations and problems involving math. Those with high levels of math anxiety respond to numerical problems with fear and worry, and also say they are anxious about situations such as being asked to solve a math problem in front of a class. Menon noted that it is possible for someone to be good at math, but still suffer from math anxiety. However, over time, people with math anxiety tend to avoid advanced classes, leaving them with deficient math skills and limiting their career options.. While prior research focused on the behavioral aspects of math anxiety, Menon and his team wanted to find biological evidence of its existence.. Its remarkable that, although the phenomena was first identified over 50 years back, nobody had bothered to ask how math anxiety manifests itself in terms of neural activity, Menon ...
