Diagnosis of imperforate anus (the absence of a normal anal opening)is usually made shortly after birth by a routine physical examination. Imperforate anus occurs in about 1 in 5000 births and its cause is unknown. Children who have imperforate anus may also have other congenital anomalies. The acronym VACTERL describes the associated problems that infants with imperforate anus may have: Vertebral defects, Anal atresia, Cardiac anomalies, Tracheoesophageal fistula, Esophageal atresia, Renal anomalies, and Limb anomalies.

Imperforate anus occurs when the anal opening is absent or not in a normal position. It is a birth defect caused by the failure of normal development of the anal area. Sometimes a fistula (abnormal passage) is present between the bowel and the vagina in girls, or between the bowel and the urinary tract in boys. There are three types of imperforate anus:. ...
When an infant is born with an anorectal malformation, it is usually detected quickly as it is a very obvious defect. Doctors will then determine the type of birth defect the child was born with and whether or not there are any associated malformations. It is important to determine the presence of any associated defects during the newborn period in order to treat them early and avoid further sequelae. There are two main categories of anorectal malformations: those that require a protective colostomy and those that do not. The decision to open a colostomy is usually taken within the first 24 hours of birth.. Sonography can be used to determine the type of imperforate anus.[6]. ...
NIH Rare Diseases : 50 townes-brocks syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by an obstruction of the anal opening (imperforate anus), abnormally shaped ears, and thumb malformations. most affected individuals have at least two of these three main features. other signs and symptoms may include kidney abnormalities, hearing loss, heart defects, genital malformations and intellectual disability. the condition is caused by mutations in the sall1 gene which provides instructions for making proteins that are involved in the formation of tissues and organs before birth. in rare cases, the syndrome may be caused by a mutation in the sall4 gene. inheritance is autosomal dominant. imperforate anus is corrected with surgery as soon as possible, after the baby is born. the hearing loss should be treated early; the thumb malformation is also treated with surgery when needed. last updated: 10/24/2016 ...
The occurrence of an anorectal malformation with Holt-Oram syndrome, microcephaly, and bilateral corneal opacity is rare and to the best of our knowledge has not previously been reported in the literature. Hence, there is a need to document our experience in this case and learn as much as possible from it. We present the case of a Nigerian female neonate with a postnatal diagnosis of syndromic anorectal malformation associated with Holt-Oram syndrome, microcephaly, and bilateral corneal opacity. The infant had successful staged correction of her anorectal malformation but developed a metastatic Wilms tumor and died before other corrective procedures could be instituted. An anorectal malformation is here reported to occur with Holt-Oram syndrome, an association that has not been reported previously. To enhance the prognosis and quality of life of children with syndromic anorectal malformation, prenatal ultrasound monitoring of high-risk pregnancies and expertise in prenatal detection of congenital

Imperforate anus, a type of anorectal malformation, is caused by the failed rupture of the cloacal membrane during embryological development. The defect presents with failure to pass meconium within 24 hours, abdominal distension, and bilious vomiting. Imperforate anus should be detected on physical exam and can be complicated by fistulas between the rectum and urogenital system resulting in passage of meconium in urine in males and urinary tract infections. Imperforate anus is also associated with other congenital defects which are classified as VACTERL (vertebral, anal, cardiac, trachea-esophageal fistula, renal, and limb defects) abnormalities ...

A comparison of laparoscopic-assisted (LAARP) and posterior sagittal (PSARP) anorectoplasty in the outcome of intermediate and high anorectal malformations. S. Afr. j. surg. [online]. 2011, vol.49, n.1, pp.39-43. ISSN 2078-5151.. INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) has gained popularity since its introduction in 2000. Further evidence is needed to compare its outcome with the gold standard of posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP). METHOD: A retrospective review of patients presenting with anorectal malformation (ARM) in the period 2000 - 2009. Demographics, associated abnormalities, and operative and post-operative complications were assessed. The functional outcome in children older than 3 years was assessed, applying the Krickenbeck scoring system and, where possible, by interviewing parents. Patients with cloacal abnormalities were excluded. Patients with a LAARP were compared with those managed by PSARP. RESULTS: ...

Definition: Anorectal malformations are a group of malformations that involve the distal anus and rectum as well as the urinary and genital tracts. Defects range from mild anal anomalies to complex cloacal malformations. Most anorectal malformations result from abnormal development of the urorectal septum, resulting in incomplete separation of the cloaca into urogenital and anorectal portions. A-The following are low malformations of the anorectal region: 1-Anal Agenesis, with or without fistula-The anal canal may end blindly and there may be an ectopic opening (ectopic anus), or fistula, that commonly opens into the perineum. However, the fistula may open into the vulva in females or the urethra in males. Anal agenesis with fistula results from incomplete separation of the cloaca by the urorectal septum. It accounts for about 46 percent of cases. 2- Anal Stenosis--The anus is in the normal position, but there is a narrowing of the anal canal. This malformation is probably caused by a slight ...
The features and physical findings associated with JBS can vary greatly from one person to another. It is important to note that affected individuals may not have all of the symptoms discussed below. However, pancreatic insufficiency, tooth abnormalities, and a characteristic shape of the nose are found in almost all affected individuals. The severity of JBS can vary as well and some infants may develop life-threatening complications during infancy. Affected individuals should talk to their physician and medical team about their specific case, associated symptoms and overall prognosis.. Infants with JBS typically have distinctive craniofacial abnormalities at birth. The most striking, constant craniofacial feature associated with JBS is an unusually small nose that appears "beak-shaped" due to absence (aplasia) or underdevelopment (hypoplasia) of the nasal wings (nasal alae). In addition, some affected infants may have a small, underdeveloped upper jaw (maxillary hypoplasia), a small pointed ...

Learn about the congenital birth defect called anorectal malformation including the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment from St. Louis Childrens Hospital.
Newborn babies frequently have congenital deformities such as anorectal malformation, genital anomalies, imperforate anus, and a host of other problems. Some of these are managed by the Urologist. Genital reconstruction surgery, genital assignment or re-assignment, ambiguous genitalia, are problems we frequently manage in Kelina Hospital. In some cases, it is actually difficult to know whether the child is a male or female. Some of these children are actually haemaphrodites. After surgery, it is easier to recognize the child as either male or female. A lot of reconstructive surgery is required for this. Sometimes it becomes necessary to go to theatre more than once to achieve desired results.. ...
Studies also report increased risk of major complications due to Obese Pregnancy such as: Gestational diabetes, Emergency caesarian section, Postpartum hemorrhage, Genital tract infection, Urinary tract infection, Wound infection, Birth-weight above the 90th percentile, Intrauterine death etc. In addition, babies with spinal cord defects (spina bifida), heart defects, anorectal atresia (misplaced or absent anal opening), hypospadias (urinary opening not at usual place), limb reduction defects, diaphragmatic hernia and omphalocele (intestines and other internal organs remain outside of abdomen in a sac) are significantly more likely to have obese moms.. As the children of an obese mother age, research suggests that the child may also have a higher chance of developing an attention deficit disorder.. However, there is a solution. The most scientifically proven one. Bariatric Surgery can minimize or totally avoid these numerous risks and help women to have a healthy pregnancy, child and motherhood ...
VACTERL Association is a sporadic, non-random association of specific birth defects. The word VACTERL is an acronym, where each letter of the word relates to an area of abnormalities. Formally known as VATER Syndrome, this condition is now generally termed as VACTERL due to the addition of other areas of defects known to be connected with the condition.

Our son, Noah Stone Jackson, was born with a very rare genetic disorder called Fraser syndrome. Among his many challenges are one "hidden eye", a narrow trachea (which required him to have a tracheotomy), an imperforate anus (which required a colostomy), difficulty swallowing (which required a G-Tube for feedings), the fusing of his vocal chords (which means he may never speak), and club feet (which are being corrected with braces). Our family is on an amazing journey together. We are learning to walk along this path that God has planned for us, trusting in His infinite love and wisdom. We are taking each day (or each moment) as it comes and relying on each other, our friends and family, and our God for strength. We have a long road ahead of us filled with several more surgeries, lots of recovery, countless hours of therapy, and many trips to specialists around the state. Every day brings us challenges but they pale in comparison to the smiles and cuddles from our little man. Noah is our son, a ...

We present a case in which an 11 month old baby with Johanson-Blizzard Syndrome developed respiratory failure due to respiratory syncytial virus. The baby was intubated and re-intubated several times using different endotracheal tube sizes in an effort to improve ventilation. While in the pediatric intensive care unit, her condition deteriorated and a tear at the posterior wall of the trachea adjacent to the carina was diagnosed. An attempt to correct surgically the tear failed and the child recovered within several days without additional surgical intervention. We discuss the management of a tracheal tear in the pediatric population, particularly the conservative as opposed to the surgical approach.

The human developmental Okihiro and Townes-Brocks syndromes are caused by mutations in SALL4 and SALL1, respectively, human homologs of the Drosophila homeotic gene spalt (sal). Both syndromes feature limb, kidney, heart and anal deformities. Now, on p. 3005, Sakaki-Yumoto et al. report that the mouse homologs of sal cooperate during anorectal, heart, brain and kidney development. To investigate the roles of mammalian Sal-related genes in organogenesis, the researchers studied mice carrying mutations in these genes. Unexpectedly, they discovered that Sall4 is essential for embryonic stem cell proliferation and early embryogenesis. Sall4 haploinsufficiency, however, causes anorectal and heart defects; Sall4/Sall1 compound heterozygotes have an increased incidence of these abnormalities, plus brain and kidney defects. Consistent with this genetic interaction, the researchers found that Sall4 and Sall1 form heterodimers. Furthermore, truncated Sall1 prevents the normal localisation of Sall4 to ...
