pectoralis, axillar, triceps, subscapular, abdomen, suprailiac, front thigh, and medial calf) using a skin-fold calliper (Harpenden skinfold caliper, Baty International Ltd) and recorded to the nearest 0.2 mm. An anthropometric equation [53] using body stature, corrected upper arm and thigh girth, sex, age and race of the participants was used to estimate skeletal muscle mass in kg. Fat-free mass (kg) was estimated using an equation for male [54] Lazertinib order and female [55] athletes. Fat mass (kg) was determined based on subtracting fat-free mass from total body mass. Percent body fat was estimated using a specific equation for men [56] and women [57]. Hydration status was classified according to the criteria established by Noakes et al. [11] with overhydration classified as any weight gain above initial body mass, euhydration as a decrease in body mass of 0.01% to 3.0%, and dehydration as any decrease in body mass greater than 3.0%. The changes of the volume of the right foot were ...

Anthropometric measurements include: weight (including birth weight), height/length, knee height (a proxy for height), mid-upper arm circumference, head circumference, waist circumference, and calf circumference. These can be used to calculate indices to identify low birth weight, stunting, wasting, BMI, head circumference for age, and acute malnutrition. FANTA, Food And Nutrition Technical Assistance project of USAID, developed a detailed guide to anthropometric data[1], including an overview of types of anthropometric data; details and classifications for children from 0-5, youth from 5-19, pregnant and postpartum women and girls, and adults 18 years and older; measurement protocols and equipment guidance. ...
Alcohol dependence is a severe mental illness and there is a need for more effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. Translational research suggests that intrauterine sex hormone exposure modulates the risk and course of alcohol dependence during adulthood. During development, sex hormones permanently shape sexually dimorphic body dimensions. Thus, these dimensions may provide insight into sex hormone organization. Here, we compared body measurements (absolute, relative to, and residualized on height) between 200 alcohol-dependent in-patients and 240 age-matched healthy control subjects and investigated how these measurements associate with the patients’ prospective 12- and 24-month outcome. The results show that alcohol dependence is related to lower absolute, relative, and residualized body measurements for height and weight, head circumference, bitragion head arc, lip-chin distance, hip, thigh, and calf circumference, and foot length and breadth. In male alcohol-dependent in-patients,
Methods As part of EPIPorto population-based study among adults, 147 men aged between 40 and 65 years were assessed. Age, height, weight, body mass index and several body circumferences were recorded by trained observers. DXA whole-body scans were performed for BMD assessment. For the calibration of OST and MORES, new regression parameters were estimated for each risk factor included accounting for their prevalence and also for the prevalence of low BMD in our population. For EPIPOST development, the different anthropometric variables were tested using logistic regression models to predict low BMD. EPIPOST validation was done by the leave-one-out cross-validation method. The overall fit and discriminatory capacity of the different models were assessed by direct comparison of the observed and expected prevalences of low BMD by quartiles of each score, Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test and area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Finally, likelihood ratios (LR) were ...
Background: The study of the relationship between anthropometry and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is of great interest because VAT is associated with many risk factors for noncommunicable diseases and anthropometry is easy to perform in clinical practice. The studies hitherto available for children have, however, been performed on small sample sizes. Design: Pooling of the data of studies published from 1992 to 2004 as indexed on Medline. Aims: To assess the relationship between anthropometry and VAT and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) as measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children and to analyze the effect of age, gender, pubertal status and ethnicity. Subjects and methods: Eligible subjects were 7-16 year-old, with availability of VAT and SAT, gender, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). A total of 497 subjects were collected from seven different investigators and 407 of them (178 Caucasians and 229 Hispanics) were analyzed. Results: Despite ethnic ...

N2 - Overweight and obesity are worldwide problems, its health and psychosocial burden on the individual and on society are tromendous. Diagnosing obesity is rather easy, and is based on simple anthropometric measurements, such as body weight, height and waist circumference. The different classes of obesity are determined by body mass index, which, together with waist circumference and comorbid conditions and other risk factors determine the individual risk for mortality and morbidity. Obesity is due to genetic and environmental factors, mainly is the consequence of excess calorie intake and sedentary lifestyle. The fat mass of the body is under neuroendocrine control, the central controller is the hypothalamus. Leptin, produced by adipocytes in proportion to fat mass, is the afferent signal to the hypothalamus. ...

The two anthropometric indicators of acute malnutrition in children under 5 years, i.e. a Mid-Upper Arm Circumference | 125 mm (MUAC125) or a Weight-for-Height Z-score|−2 (WHZ−2), correlate poorly. We aimed at assessing the contribution of age, sex, stunting (Height-for-Age HAZ|−2), and low sitting-standing height ratio Z-score (SSRZ in the 1st tertile of the study population, called hereafter longer legs) to this diagnosis discrepancy. Data from 16 cross-sectional nutritional surveys carried out by Action Against Hunger International in South Sudan, the Philippines, Chad, and Bangladesh fed multilevel, multivariate regression models, with either WHZ−2 or MUAC125 as the dependent variable and age, sex, stunting, and longer legs as the independent ones. We also compared how the performance of MUAC125 and WHZ−2 to detect slim children, i.e. children with a low Weight-for-Age (WAZ|−2) but no linear growth retardation (HAZ≥−2), was modified by the contributors. Diet is a modifiable factor that can contribute to the health of pregnant women. In a sample of 577 HIV-positive pregnant women who completed baseline interviews for the Breastfeeding, Antiretrovirals, and Nutrition Study in Lilongwe, Malawi, cluster analysis was used to derive dietary patterns. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify associations between the dietary patterns and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), arm muscle area (AMA), arm fat area (AFA), and hemoglobin at baseline. Three key dietary patterns were identified: animal-based, plant-based, and grain-based. Women with relatively greater wealth were more likely to consume the animal-based diet, which had the highest intake of energy, protein, and fat and was associated with higher hemoglobin levels compared to the other diets. Women with the lowest wealth were more likely to consume the grain-based diet with the lowest intake of energy, protein, fat, and iron and were more likely to have lower AFA than women on the animal-based

The anthropometry of the upper arm is a set of measurements of the shape of the upper arms. The principal anthropometry measures are the upper arm length, the triceps skin fold (TSF), and the (mid-)upper arm circumference ((M)UAC). The derived measures include the (mid-)upper arm muscle area ((M)UAMA), the (mid-)upper arm fat area ((M)UAFA), and the arm fat index. Although they are not directly convertible into measures of overall body fat weight and density, and research has questioned the connection between skinfold fat and deep body fat measurements, these measures are and have been used as rough indicators of body fat. Factors influencing the bone, fat, and muscle composition of the upper arm include age, sex, nutritional status, fitness training level, and race. The anthropometric measures of the upper arm are divided into principal measures, which are measured directly, and derived measures, which are derived from the principal measures using specific formulae and empirically-derived ...
Two hundred and fifty seven male Caucasian ultra endurance athletes were recruited, pre-race, before different swimming, cycling, running and triathlon races. Fat mass and skeletal muscle mass were estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometric methods in order to investigate whether the use of BIA or anthropometry would be useful under field conditions. Total body fat estimated using BIA was significantly high (P , 0.001) compared with anthropometry. When the results between BIA and anthropometry were compared, moderate to low levels of agreement were found. These results were in accordance with the differences found in the Bland-Altman analysis, indicating that the anthropometric equation of Ball et al. had the highest level of agreement (Bias = -3.0 ± 5.8 kg) with BIA, using Stewart et al. (Bias = -6.4 ± 6.3 kg), Faulkner (Bias = -4.7 ± 5.8 kg)and Wilmore-Siri (Bias = -4.8 ± 6.2 kg). The estimation of skeletal muscle mass using BIA was significantly (P , 0.001) ...
INTRODUCTION: sports anaemia is a physiological activity that occurs amongst footballers and may be due to poor diet, over-training, as well as an increase in plasma volume in endurance training activities. High plasma volume leads to changes in haematological parameters that may impact on endurance of footballers. The objective of the study was to determine the correlation between haematological and an-thropometric indices and their role in sports anaemia in a tropical setting. METHODS: venous blood was taken into EDTA for 12 soccer players of KNUST soccer team before train-ing and after training for the first (W1) and fifth (W5) weeks of training sessions. Complete blood count analysis was done for each blood sample and anthropometric parameters such as height, weight, body mass index, body fat percent and lean body mass were also measured. Cross-tabulations with mean and standard deviation or median and range were computed. Paired t-test & and Mann-Whitney test for pa-rametric and non-parametric data

Body measurements were obtained on 575 preschool children at the Indian communities of Cross Lake and Garden Hill in northern Manitoba. Infectious diseases were common in the children but clinical signs of malnutrition were rare. Height, weight and head circumference measurements for age were similar to those reported from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)for U.S. children but weight for height, particularly in the girls, exceeded these standards. The children were not obese in that triceps fatfold thickness measurements were lower than those of British children. Mid-upper arm muscle areas were similar to those of U.S. children. Chest circumference measurements were greater than those reported for European children and the large chest size may have accounted for at least some of the increased weight for height.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization currently defines severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in infants aged under 6 months of age using weight-for-length Z score (WLZ). Given widespread use of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) for identifying SAM in older children and weight-for-age (WAZ) for growth monitoring, there is increasing debate about the optimal anthropometric criteria to best identify infants u6m at-risk of mortality. OBJECTIVE: To determine the discriminatory value for mortality during the first 12 months of life of anthropometry taken at birth and at age two months (approximate age of routine vaccination). DESIGN: Data were analyzed from a birth cohort recruited between April and December of 2004 at four health facilities within Bansalogho District in Burkina Faso. Infants were followed up for 12 months. Mortality risks were estimated using hazards ratios (HR). Discriminatory value was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: Of 1,103 infants, 227 (21%) were low
Results Two-thirds of the children had received DTP at 2 months and 50 deaths occurred between the 2-month and 6-month visits. DTP vaccinated children had a better anthropometric status for all indices than DTP unvaccinated children. Small mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) was the strongest predictor of mortality. The death rate ratio (DRR) for DTP vaccinated versus DTP unvaccinated children differed significantly for girls (DRR 2.45; 95% CI 0.93 to 6.45) and boys (DRR 0.53; 95% CI 0.23 to 1.20) (p=0.018, homogeneity test). Adjusting for MUAC, the overall effect for DTP vaccinated children was 2.62 (95% CI 1.34 to 5.09); DRR was 5.68 (95% CI 1.83 to 17.7) for girls and 1.29 (95% CI 0.56 to 2.97) for boys (p=0.023, homogeneity test). While anthropometric indices were a strong predictor of mortality among boys, there was little or no association for girls.. Conclusion Surprisingly, even though the children with the best nutritional status were vaccinated early, early DTP vaccination was ...

Discussion. Anthropometric profiles were observed to differ between older adults in the same age range (71-81 years), born in different periods. Individuals in the more recent birth cohort (1927-1937) showed greater weight gain both in mean BMI and in prevalence of overweight as compared with individuals born in the older cohort (1916-1926). The effects of both birth cohort and age on anthropometric profile seem to have been greater among men than among women.. Despite the scarcity of international and Brazilian studies examining the evolution of body composition over time 5,6,7,21,22, particularly in the elderly population 23, some comparisons can be made. The findings of this study are consistent with the literature as regards the greater prevalence of overweight and obesity among women. In both 1997 and 2008, prevalence of overweight (BMI , 27kg/m2) was greater among women (37.3% in 1997 and 38.9% in 2008) than among men in the same years (respectively, 16% and 32.7%). Comparable prevalences ...
The International Dietary Energy Consultative Group, sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), has done most of the research conducted in the field of adult malnutrition in the late 1980s. These studies were carried out mainly in populations suffering from chronic malnutrition, and led to the current WHO recommendations for the diagnosis and classification of adult malnutrition. Body Mass Index (BMI) is the gold standard to be used in adults, with the following cut-off points identified: 16.0, 17.0 and 18.5. The good correlation observed between BMI and Middle Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) led to the determination of corresponding cut-off points. However, the very few field studies available in the literature are in favor of a lowering of the BMI cut-off points during nutritional emergencies. Several questions need to be answered through field research, mainly concerning the type of indicator best predicting the risk of death, and the type of indicator to be used in adolescents, ...

Introduction: Breast cancer remains the most common malignancy in women and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this gender. The disease in the indigenous African woman is associated with an inherent aggressive biology and worst clinical outcome. As the malignancy is a heterogeneous entity, each case must be individually categorized for efficient therapy. Current clinical practice employs the use of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), as biomarkers to appropriately select patients that would benefit from targeted therapy against these major molecular pathways of the disease. This study aims at establishing the ER, PR, and HER2 status of breast cancer in women visiting the Jos University Teaching Hospital. Materials and Methods: All histologically confirmed cases of breast cancer at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2012, with sufficient clinical records, were subjected ...

In contrast, organic semi-conductors are complex but enable production of innovative electronic circuits, as vividly demonstrated by the first prototypes for roll-up screens. Yet these benefits of organic semi-conductors can only be fully harnessed when the response of their organic molecular layer - whose thinness is crucial in functional terms - is better understood. The national research network (NRN) Interface controlled and functionalised organic thin films of the Austrian Science Fund FWF is contributing to precisely this understanding.. MICROSCOPIC HEIGHT MEASUREMENT. In the latest issue of SCIENCE, a team from the NRN has now been able to show that organic molecules spread out on a carrier material in a previously unknown form to create thin electrically conductive films. As Prof. Christian Teichert from the Institute of Physics at the University of Leoben explains: Totally ...

Supplementary MaterialsSupplementary Physique S1. molecular mechanisms of furanodienone on RKO or HT-29 colon cancer cells and control, #NAC+Fur Furanodienone induces apoptosis via activating MAPKs-mediated mitochondrial pathway dependent of ROS production The possible interlink between oxidative stress and MAPKs pathway in RKO and HT-29 cells were examined by western blotting. Furanodienone significantly induced the phosphorylations of p38 and Etomoxir (sodium salt) JNK in a dose-dependent manner, and unexpectedly, the expression of p-ERK was reduced (Physique 5a). The antioxidant NAC reduced p-p38, p-JNK and increased p-ERK levels in Physique 5b. However, expression of p38, JNK and ERK remained unchanged. We Rabbit Polyclonal to Akt (phospho-Thr308) further illuminated the relationship between MAPKs and furanodienone-induced caspase-dependent apoptosis. RKO cells were pretreated with three specific inhibitors, respectively, U0126 (an ERK inhibitor), SP600125 (a JNK inhibitor) and SB202190 (a ...

Purpose.: To investigate the relationship between anthropometric parameters and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in adults with diabetes. Methods.: Five hundred participants with diabetes were recruited prospectively from ophthalmology clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Each underwent an eye examination, anthropometric measurements, and standardized interview-administered questionnaires, and fasting blood glucose and serum lipids were analyzed. Two-field fundus photographs were taken and graded for DR. Height; weight; body mass index (BMI); waist, hip, neck, and head circumferences; and skinfold measurements were recorded. Results.: A total of 492 patients (325 men, 66.1%) aged between 26 and 90 years (median, 65) were included in the analysis: 171 (34.8%), 187 (38.0%), and 134 (27.2%) with no DR, nonproliferative DR (NPDR), and proliferative DR (PDR), respectively. After multiple adjustments, higher BMI (odds ratio [OR], 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI],1.01-1.11; P = 0.02) was significantly ...
Subjective study results are reported in Table 1.. Device use. The self-reported mean number of hours per day (h/d) that patients wore the AFOs was 13.26 h/d for the MAFOs (range, 8-16 h/d, with eight patients at 16 h/d) compared with 15.16 h/d (range, 10-16 h/d, with 16 patients at 16 h/d) for the KRAFOs. This difference was statistically significant (p , .001). (A patient response of waking hours was calculated as 16 h/d.). Functional improvement. The self-reported mean time to fatigue was nine hours in the MAFOs (range, 4-16 h, with one patient at 16 h) compared with 15.11 h (range, 10-16 h, with 16 patients at 16 h) in the KRAFO, a statistically significant difference (p , .001). Mean distance capacity reported for the MAFOs was 882.35 yards (range, 500 to 1000 yards, with 15 patients at 1000 yards) compared with 1000 yards (all 19 at 1000 yards) in the KRAFOs, a statistically significant difference (p = .041).. Ease of use. Patients gave the KRAFOs significantly higher ratings than the ...
The Anthropometry team manages anthropometric and body composition activities on a wide range of research projects in the University of Cambridge, as well as studies run by international collaborators.. The team ensures the collection of high quality body measurement data. The accuracy of measurements is achieved by developing standardised procedures, training and monitoring the performance of study team members, calibrating equipment and performing quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) workshops, where technical errors of measurement (TEM) are quantified.. The team also manages radiation protection processes, ensuring that the requirements of the IRR and IRMER regulations are met for the use of DEXA scans.. ...
