Screen time activities (e.g., television, computers, video games) have been linked to several negative health outcomes among young people. In order to develop evidence-based interventions to reduce screen time, the factors that influence the behavior need to be better understood. High neighborhood disorder, which may encourage young people to stay indoors where screen time activities are readily available, is one potential factor to consider. Results are based on 15,917 youth in grades 6-10 (aged 10-16 years old) who participated in the Canadian 2009/10 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Survey (HBSC). Total hours per week of television, video games, and computer use were reported by the participating students in the HBSC student questionnaire. Ten items of neighborhood disorder including safety, neighbors taking advantage, drugs/drinking in public, ethnic tensions, gangs, crime, conditions of buildings/grounds, abandoned buildings, litter, and graffiti were measured using the HBSC student

Source: United Nations (1953) Comparative Survey on Juvenile Delinquency, part-iv, Asia and Far East, New York, (p.4).. Robert K Merton in his work Social Structure and Anomie 1938, has pinpointed social structural processes as the ultimate source of the problem of juvenile delinquency emphasizing the facts that there are flows and contradiction in the organization. A person is trust into anomy when the goal of society are denied to him although he has scrupulously adhered to the institutionalize means whereby other people ordinarily achieve this goal. Due to such contradiction, an anomic individual usually searches for alternative means to achieve his goals in a deviant pattern.. Healy and Bronner, (Bela, 1964), in their study, New Light on Delinquency, come to a conclusion that, in nearly all the delinquent cases their are clear evidence that those who were found delinquent were very unhappy in their life circumstances due to lack of affection.. Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 2018, 15(1), 156; doi:10.3390/ijerph15010156. Sammanfattning. This study addressed school-contextual features of social disorder in relation to sixth-grade students experiences of bullying victimization and mental health complaints. It investigated, firstly, whether the schools concentrations of behavioural problems were associated with individual students likelihood of being bullied, and secondly, whether the schools concentrations of behavioural problems and bullying victimization predicted students emotional and psychosomatic health complaints. The data were derived from the Swedish National Survey of Mental Health among Children and Young People, carried out among sixth-grade students (approximately 12-13 years old) in Sweden in 2009. The analyses were based on information from 59,510 students distributed across 1999 schools. The statistical method used was multilevel modelling. While students own behavioural problems were associated with an elevated ...
Data for this project was compiled from a variety of sources. To generate the homicide rate (per 100,000), homicide incident counts were obtained from HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO, 1965-1995 (ICPSR 6399). This dataset includes tract identifiers that allow for merging with other tract characteristics. The population sizes used in the denominator of the homicide rate were obtained from the decennial United States Census files for each decade from 1980-2000, and cubic spline interpolation was used to generate intercensal estimates. The homicide rate was calculated per 100,000 population. Due to a high degree of skewness in the homicide rate, the study analyses used the natural log of the homicide rate. One objective was to examine the relationships between homicide trends and various characteristics of neighborhood structure identified as relevant by the social disorganization perspective. These variables were drawn from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: SUMMARY TAPE FILE 3A ...
2) ignorance about the multiplication rule of probability for criminal behavior. Namely, failure to recognize that criminal behavior is determined by the interaction of multiple variables or factors.. Regarding the first error, research in criminology and psychology has identified numerous variables that may increase an individual tendency to commit crime. These variables range from social disorganization, dysfunctional environments, crime learning conditions, developmental problems, lack of social control, lack of education, stigmatization, cognitive deficiencies, impulsivity, childhood trauma, as well as some associated demographic variables such as gender, social class and race. The distinction between the relative frequency and the absolute frequency can be explained with the following examples:. Research has shown that people with only high school education are more likely to commit crime than people with graduate degrees. The same can be said about high impulsive persons, who are more ...

In this paper, we study the effect of displacement of population into cities on urban conflict in developing countries. To do so, we construct a novel measure of exposure to floods, using data on more than 3,300 flood events worldwide, as an exogenous source of population displacement. We combine this with city level observations of more than 9,000 urban social disorder events. Exposure to floods is found to be associated with higher likelihood and frequency of urban social disorder. Our evidence suggests that the effects of floods on urban disorder occur mainly through the displacement of population into large cities. Exploring the information on urban disorder events in more detail, we find that the association between city growth and urban disorder is strongest for events related to public service provision, wages and food prices.. The research team was positively surprised by the resulting large size of the difference between the two conditions, obtained only after one minute and a half of testing, and was equally astonished that the difference in conditions did not exist when the faces were inverted. The study also confirmed that the region for face perception lies primarily in the posterior part of the brains right hemisphere. The ability to recognize a face is a common problem in cases of sudden onset of posterior brain damage, neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia and social disorders such as autism. Rossion points out that an advantage of using this highly sensitive SSVEP methods is that it can be used and compared objectively in different human populations - adults, infants, children, neurological patients, people with long-life face recognition impairments or autism - without requiring complex instructions and a long testing duration.. Face recognition involves the most ...

I admire but disagree with Michael Kinsleys Sunday column on Bush the Thinker. His argument is this: Bush, contrary to Kinsleys own preconceptions, has been growing intellectually, as proved by his State of the Union and inaugural addresses. In particular, Kinsley believes Bush is parting ways with his neocon tutors by blaming terrorism on tyranny, an argument Kinsley characterizes as a variation on the old root-causes school of crime, which said that crime was caused by poverty and other social disorders that schooled would-be good citizens in cruelty and unfairness. Kinsley quotes Bush saying: The peace we seek will only be achieved by eliminating the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder. If whole regions of the world remain in despair and grow in hatred, they will be the recruiting grounds for terror. Kinsley goes on to compare Bushs insight here with one of Emma Goldmans that, terrorism . . . is inevitable so long as tyranny continues, for it is not the ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Neighborhood effects on an individuals health using neighborhood measurements developed by factor analysis and cluster analysis. AU - Li, Yu Sheng. AU - Chuang, Ying Chih. PY - 2009/1. Y1 - 2009/1. N2 - This study suggests a multivariate-structural approach combining factor analysis and cluster analysis that could be used to examine neighborhood effects on an individuals health. Data were from the Taiwan Social Change Survey conducted in 1990, 1995, and 2000. In total, 5,784 women and men aged over 20 years living in 428 neighborhoods were interviewed. Participants addresses were geocoded with census data for measuring neighborhood-level characteristics. The factor analysis was applied to identify neighborhood dimensions, which were used as entities in the cluster analysis to generate a neighborhood typology. The factor analysis generated three neighborhood dimensions: neighborhood education, age structure, and neighborhood family structure and employment. The cluster analysis ...
Recent epidemiologic studies reveal that alcohol use and anxiety continue to be prevalent problems beginning in the adolescent years. This chapter presents a study that explores the specific associations between these two highly prevalent disorders and a protective factor shown in previous research to be robust in adolescents': spirituality. This investigation is especially germane to adolescents as prior studies have indicated that the protective qualities of spirituality may be more robust in adolescents than adults, suggesting a potential role of spirituality in onset of these disorders. Substance use was associated with relational spirituality -a sense of personal ongoing connection with the Creator. In contrast, anxiety was associated with the quality of interpersonal relationships within a religious community. The results of the study suggest that substance use might best be understood as primarily a spiritual disorder, while anxiety may be fundamentally a social disorder.Keywords:adolescent;
If we can agree that poverty is a social problem, we are led to another question: what sort of social problem is it? For some, it is a social problem because people should not be poor: it involves social injustice. For others, poverty is a social problem because poor people behave badly (or bring up children poorly): it involves social disorder. We therefore have another parting of the ways, with some believing that social justice requires poor people to become less poor, and others believing ...

This publication presents results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) national Crime Victimisation Survey, conducted from July 2009 to June 2010 using the ABS Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS). The survey collected data about victims for a selected range of personal and household offences, whether victims reported these incidents to police, characteristics of victims and characteristics of their most recent incident, and peoples perceptions on social disorder in their local area. This is the second crime victimisation survey conducted by the ABS since it was redesigned in 2008-09. Time series data are included to compare results with the 2008-09 Crime Victimisation Survey ...

This article has been cited by other articles in PMC.. This article examines the most significant, contradictory evidence pertaining to autism. The first section of the article includes reports of recovery from autism, data obtained from studies involving oxytocin, early deprivation, autism in preterm children, late-onset autism, and symptom overlap among ASD, social phobias and personality disorders. In the second section of the article, we offer a model that better incorporates current findings and address controversies that continue to surround ASD. We propose an umbrella term social inhibition disorders which integrates autism spectrum disorders and social phobias, as well as schizoid, schizotypal, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. It would also include quasi-autism, which has been found in early deprivation studies, autism in preterm children, and cases of late-onset autism presenting after herpes encephalitis infection. Finally, we discuss suggestions for further research ...
Downloadable! In the neighbourhood effects literature, the socialisation mechanism is usually investigated by looking at the association between neighbourhood characteristics and educational attainment. The step in between, that adolescents actually internalise educational norms held by residents, is often assumed. We attempt to fill this gap by looking at how educational commitments are influenced by neighbourhood characteristics. We investigate this process for migrant youth, a group that lags behind in educational attainment compared to native youth, and might therefore be particularly vulnerable to neighbourhood effects. To test our hypothesis we used longitudinal panel data with five waves (N=4179), combined with fixed-effects models which control for a large portion of potential selection bias. These models have an advantage over naïve OLS models in that they predict the effect of change in neighbourhood characteristics on change in educational commitment, and therefore offer a more dynamic
Children with autism see simple movement twice as quickly as other children their age, and this hypersensitivity to motion may provide clues to a fundamental cause of the developmental disorder, according to a new study. Such heightened sensory perception in autism may help explain why some people with the disorder are painfully sensitive to noise and bright lights. It also may be linked to some of the complex social and behavioral deficits associated with autism, says Duje Tadin, one of the lead authors on the study and an assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. We think of autism as a social disorder because children with this condition often struggle with social interactions, but what we sometimes neglect is that almost everything we know about the world comes from our senses. Abnormalities in how a person sees or hears can have a profound effect on social communication.. Although previous studies have found that people with autism possess ...

The FIS won the municipal elections by a landslide and were poised to win the nation?s first national elections. However its right was denied through illegal means, unconstitutional and not even in the nation?s interest. The FIS was never a militant organisation nor an extremist movement like what it has been attempted to made as later on. The FIS grew from the grassroots, the trend of the masses who were wishing for change. For years the old regime of the FLN could not bring advancement or development for the country. The FLN government was fraught with corruption and inefficiencies that were prevalent and would usually accompany weak socialist regimes all over the middle east and the third world. So when the oil boom was over and oil could not support its economy, Algeria underwent an economic crisis and social disorder. Social upheaval took to the streets in the form of food and price riots which was beyond the regime?s will to contain. The FLN regime had to call upon the syeikhs, imams and ...
Up to a million Japanese teens and twenty-somethings are refusing to come out of their rooms, reports Phil Rees in the BBC. Doctors are blaming the epidemic on a social disorder known as hikikomori(Japanese for withdraw from society), caused by severe academic pressures and an inability to talk to their families. Some observers are blaming traditional Japanese poetry and music that celebrates the nobility of solitude, or the fact that its not unusual for young men to remain under their parents care until theyre in their 30s and 40s in some cases. Hikikomori is more likely to strike eldest sons, according to some studies, and the disorder does not exist outside of Japan ...
In this population-based cohort of older adults, greater neighborhood-level social cohesion was associated with significantly reduced risk of stroke mortality but not incident stroke. The association with stroke mortality was independent of known stroke risk factors and neighborhood-level socioeconomic status and was not attenuated by the control for individual-level measures of social network and engagement. Findings suggest that aspects of the neighborhood social environment may affect stroke risk among older adults, a demographic group in which neighborhood effects may be particularly salient.11. The observed protective effect of neighborhood cohesion on stroke mortality is consistent with previous studies. Neighborhood-level cohesion has been linked to heart disease,24 all-cause mortality,25 self-rated health,26,27 smoking,28 physical activity,29,30 hypertension,31 and measures of mental health.26,32 The findings of this study are also consistent with the overlapping literature on the health ...

The initial ratios were 8 to 3 to 5: eight low-poverty voucher group families to three traditional voucher families to five ...

We analyze the effect of industry, region, and time on new businesssurvival rates by means of a multi-dimensional approach. The data relateto West German districts in the 1983-2000 period. The survival chancesof start-ups tend to be relatively low in industries characterized by ahigh minimum efficient size and high numbers of entries. We find thatregional characteristics play a rather important role and thatintroducing the regional dimension leads to considerable improvements ofthe estimation results. The significance of the regional dimension isalso reflected in a remarkably high level of neighborhood effects. ...

Research on associations between neighbourhood characteristics and mental health is extensive, and has expanded in recent decades. The evidence base concerning such an association at older ages is, however, thin and inconclusive despite the ageing populations and still ongoing urbanisation of most industrialised countries. Older people may be particularly susceptible to neighbourhood factors,1 being less likely to commute and to spend time outside the neighbourhood. Those with functional limitations, in particular, are restricted to the immediate surroundings of the home. There are numerous mechanisms through which neighbourhood characteristics could affect mental health. Access to green space may reduce stress and be beneficial, for example, whereas a socioeconomically deprived area may be stressful and lack services, which may have harmful repercussions.2 Although some studies report no association between neighbourhood social characteristics and depressive scores, or changes in depressive ...

This paper represents the second stage of an effort to test previously unstudied implications of a dramatic shift in the American educational landscape, namely, the rapid disappearance of Catholic schools from urban neighborhoods. In a previous study, we used data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods to measure how Catholic school closures affected perceived levels of disorder and social cohesion in Chicago neighborhoods. In this paper, we use data provided by the Chicago Police Department to test two related hypotheses about the effects of Catholic school closures on violent crime rates. The first is that Catholic school closures will lead, in relatively short order, to increased crime in a neighborhood. The second is that that crime will increase most dramatically in those police beats where previous school closures led to elevated levels of physical and social disorder and suppressed levels of social cohesion in 1995. We find that Catholic school closures are linked ...
Sierra Leone is an extremely poor African nation with tremendous inequality in income distribution. While it possesses substantial mineral, agricultural, and fishery resources, its economic and social infrastructure is not well developed, and serious social disorders continue to hamper economic development. About two-thirds of the working-age population engages in subsistence agriculture. Manufacturing consists mainly of the processing of raw materials and of light manufacturing for the domestic market. Plans to reopen bauxite and rutile mines shut down during an 11 year civil war have not been implemented due to lack of foreign investment. Alluvial diamond mining remains the major source of hard currency earnings. The fate of the economy depends upon the maintenance of domestic peace and the continued receipt of substantial aid from abroad, which is essential to offset the severe trade imbalance and supplement government revenues. International financial institutions contributed over $600 ...

Since April Fools Day, prison guards have been slipping census forms into the cells of the nations nearly two million prisoners. Your answers are important, reads the accompanying letter from the US Census Bureau director. The amount of government money your neighborhood receives depends on your answers. Well, not exactly. Not in the case of prisoners. The near- doubling of the prison population since the last census and a rural prison boom during the 1990s portends a substantial transfer of economic and political power from urban to rural America. Thats because, due to a little-known census provision, prison inmates will be counted in the populations of the towns and counties in which they are incarcerated and not in their home neighborhoods. The result? Inner-city communities, from which large numbers of prisoner bodies are snatched, will lose out. The prisoner share of the nearly $2 trillion in federal funds tied to population counts distributed nationwide over the next decade will ...
