NICARAGUA. 1. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has continued to observe carefully the evolution of human rights in Nicaragua. In addition to the special report concerned with that country in 1981, the Report on the Situation of Human Rights of a Sector of the Nicaraguan Population of Miskito Origin was also prepared in this period. The IACHR also considered the status of human rights in Nicaragua in its Annual Reports of 1981-1982 and 1982-1983. In these reports, the Commission referred specifically to observance of the right to life, to freedom of expression, to personal freedom and security, to due process, to religious freedom and to political rights. The object of this report is to update the Commission s information on these matters.. 2. In its 1982-1983 Annual Report, the IACHR recalled the Resolution of June 23, 1979 of the Seventeenth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs. That instrument, in its preamble recognized that the solution to the serious problem ...

I am pleased to present the 2015‑16 Annual Report of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).. Over the past year, CIHR has made investments in health research that will have a significant impact on the health of Canadians and people throughout the world. I am particularly proud of the work accomplished by CIHR to help countries in need, beginning with the response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.. When the Ebola outbreak occurred, CIHR and Canadian researchers were at the forefront of the international response. CIHR joined forces with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Immunization Research Network to conduct a Phase I clinical trial of VSV-EBOV, a made-in-Canada Ebola vaccine. The results demonstrated that the vaccine was safe and those findings became a key component of the international data that would lead to the selection of VSV-EBOV for a Phase II-III trial to test its real-world efficacy. Interim results of those trials have confirmed that VSV-EBOV is ...

The 2012 ERA-EDTA Registry Annual Report contains both good news and bad news. On the bright side, the 2-year survival of patients starting renal replacement therapy (RRT) for chronic kidney disease (CKD), on dialysis or receiving a living-related kidney transplantation, has progressively increased to 82.2, 79.7 and 98.3%, respectively, whereas for cadaveric kidney transplantation it remains stable (96.0-96.1%). On the dark side, inequalities persist between European citizens in access to renal transplantation and in incidence and prevalence of RRT. Living in Greece, Belgium (French- or Dutch-speaking) or Portugal (the GBP countries) is associated with higher chances of initiating RRT than living in other European countries. The adjusted RRT incidence for GBP countries was 188, 201-174 and 220* (* unadjusted) pmp in 2012, respectively (versus 122, 114 and 97 pmp in the Netherlands or two Spanish regions bordering Portugal). In lower income countries, a low RRT incidence may represent lack of ...

Minimally-Invasive, Facial Rejuvenation Procedures Fuel 5% Growth; American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Reports Annual Statistics The annual statistics for cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in 2012 have just been released. 14.6 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, including both minimally-invasive and surgical, were performed in the United States in 2012, up 5 percent since 2011. For the third year in a row, the overall growth in cosmetic plastic surgery continues to be driven by a significant rise in minimally-invasive procedures, while surgical procedures remain relatively stable. Beleza Medspa in Austin TX, reports seeing similar trends in its practice. We continue to see strong growth in injectable procedures like Botox and Juvederm, laser procedures like Dot therapy, photofacials and laser hair removal, they report. What has been even more promising is the growth in non-invasive body contouring procedures like Coolsculpting and Venus Freeze. The ASPS report showed ...

by working on specific tracks for non-communicable diseases, malaria, zoonoses, and immunization. Greater emphasis has also been given to improving the quality of the training and outcomes. We are developing and deploying new tools to help programs assess their quality. We are also partnering with TEPHINET and others to work on accreditation and preparing for a multi-site evaluation of the FETP. We believe that this approach will allow us to expand support for ministries of health and other partners, strengthen and improve critical public health systems, prevent and control infectious and chronic diseases, respond to international disasters, and provide a sustainable approach to building a global public health workforce that includes skilled field epidemiologists, laboratory scientists, and public health managers ...

Cross-Network collaborations among AllerGens Enabling Platform teams have resulted in translational research results in food allergy, epigenetics and biomarker development that facilitated the development of new approaches to allergy diagnosis and clinical care. These collaborations have also supported the launch of The Canadian Urban Environmental Health Research Consortium (CANUE)-a new pan-Canadian research consortium that links exposome data with AllerGen research and CHILD Study data to advance our understanding of how cities can be designed or modified to improve population health.. In 2016-2017, AllerGen teams joined with global partners to provide novel capacity building opportunities to outstanding young trainees and investigators, accelerating their rise through the academic ranks. AllerGen was also delighted to award its fourth Emerging Clinician-Scientist Research Fellowship, valued at $250,000, to support the development of Canadian clinician-scientists in the field of allergy and ...
A new medical imaging system that could dramatically improve cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue is moving to the next stage. With testing of a prototype almost finished, clinical trials may begin this year using a high-resolution, high-sensitivity Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) detector thats been developed by Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute with help from local partners.. Our device can be used as a primary screening tool for women for whom mammography doesnt see small lesions or women who have a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer, such as those with dense breast tissue, explains Dr. Alla Reznik, a professor in Lakeheads Physics department.. Reznik is the Canada Research Chair in Physics of Molecular Imaging and is a Chief Scientific Officer at Radialis Medical - the first joint venture between Lakehead and the Health Research Institute. Since arriving in Thunder Bay a decade ago, she has been working to improve early ...
The Louisiana Department of Health protects and promotes health and ensures access to medical, preventive and rehabilitative services for all citizens of the State of Louisiana.
In the early years after its independence, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia scrambled to maintain and reform its health systems. It was generally successful. Immunization rates dipped for a while but have since climbed to 90 per cent, due in part to UNICEFs regular provision of vaccines. Yet certain population groups and health-care issues still require extra attention. Today, UNICEF is working with the Government on strategies to fill these gaps. Maternal and child health care is one such concern. While the country has relatively low rates of maternal and infant mortality, a 2009 study supported by UNICEF found acute disparities in access to maternal and child health care, especially among rural residents and Roma communities. The difference in infant mortality rates ranged up to 30 per cent among regions and ethnic groups. For pregnant Roma women, access to services was much lower - 1 out of 5 never visited a doctor; half made only one visit. In 2010, UNICEF assisted the Ministry of ...
Despite what popular police dramas would have us believe, DNA on its own cant solve crimes. Investigators still have to do the same meticulous legwork theyve always done, but now they can use DNA evidence to narrow the focus on certain suspects while eliminating others. In other words, DNA is helping investigators do their jobs more efficiently, which ultimately means its helping them protect Canadians.. The NDDB continues to demonstrate its effectiveness in assisting criminal investigations. The more profiles the COI contains, the more likely it is that matches will be made and more investigations will benefit from DNA evidence. Every time a DNA order is not requested, or if a requested order is denied, an opportunity to solve a crime is potentially missed.. When the NDDB opened its doors in June 2000, a DNA sample could only be taken from someone convicted of committing a serious crime against a person such as murder, sexual assault or aggravated assault. A limited number of secondary ...
by Ward J. Childs In the last issue of the Newsletter we may seem to have spent an inordinate amount of space on the Police Annual Report. We have done so because the Annual Report is the one reasonably continuous record series of the Police that we have for the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries, and, hence, it is indispensable for anyone doing research on crime. However, we also hold a number of records series of manuscript Police records for this period which are valuable for what they tell us about Police procedures for collecting identifying information about criminals and compiling statistics. One of these, the Detective Divisions Register of Descriptions of Criminals, which we hold for the periods July 1892 - January 1897 and September 1902 - November 1907, was probably one of the first records in which the Police registered suspects after they came into their custody. In these Registers the Police listed the suspects name and aliases, age, color, place of birth, residence, ...

NJDA closely monitored the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom and the European Union and, in collaboration with USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Veterinary Services, compiled pertinent data on the virus and distributed it to all accredited veterinarians and livestock producers in the Garden State. In addition, because swine are considered to be exceptionally efficient transmitters of this virus and feeding uncooked garbage to swine has been implicated as the source of infection in several outbreaks of FMD around the world, field staff from NJDA and USDA periodically visited all garbage-feeding swine producers in the state to provide them with the same information. NJDA worked with USDA to educate the public about the particular risk of FMD infection posed to New Jersey because of its position as a corridor state. As part of an interagency team of experts, NJDAs State Veterinarian visited several import and quarantine sites along the East Coast to provide ...
Policing In the early years of the DVDRC, many of the recommendations addressed issues pertaining to police response to incidents of domestic violence. In response to these recommendations, the policing community has taken significant steps towards educating officers on the dynamics of domestic violence and implementing firm policies and procedures towards intervention in cases of volatile domestic relationships. The establishment of high-risk and/or multi-disciplinary teams acknowledges the emphasis on a collaborative response to the issue of domestic violence within and between communities, professionals and sectors. Use of the Domestic Violence Supplementary Report (DVSR), and more recently the adoption of the Domestic Violence Risk Management (DVRM) tool have advanced the ability of front-line officers, as well as their supervisors, to better assess true high-risk cases. Although some very significant gains have been made in training and response by many police services, there is still a ...

April 2010. This is the fifth in a series of articles taking a look back at the Chambers history in celebration of its 125th Anniversary. The Chamber was founded on December 15, 1885 as the Williamsport Board of Trade.. I came across the 1929 Annual Report of the Chamber and in it is a section entitled Lets Know Our Own Home Town. I thought it would be interesting to relay some of the data contained in this section. The date of the Annual Report is October 15, 1929. Of course, the world would change forever and many lives and fortunes would be damaged just two weeks later when the Stock Market crashed and burned leading Williamsport and all of America into the Great Depression. But, on October 15, 1929 Williamsport and the rest of the country was thriving, the stock market was booming and fortunes were being made. So, what did Williamsport look like statistically at that time? Here is some of what appeared in the Annual Report of the Williamsport Chamber of Commerce - Lets Know Our Own ...

Introduction. Most research previously conducted on the effects of aerial ammonia on birds, caretakers and the air environment has been on air concentration level. Previous techniques used to reduce ammonia have reported results based on changes in concentration levels. The effect of ammonia reducing techniques on the generation rate of ammonia production (i.e., mg/hour or mg/bird/hour) has not been extensively investigated by other researchers; however, last year we reported on an experiment conducted in our laboratory. In that report, we reported that spraying laying hen manure with soybean oil had no consistent effect on ammonia production. Fecal pans that were sprayed with oil and no oil produced 15.3 and 20.3 mLNH3/kg body weight of chickens, respectively. Thus, the results of that study indicated that spraying laying hen manure with soybean oil had no appreciable effect on the generation rate of ammonia production.. There are several methods that have been used in the commercial poultry ...

The Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2009 which would further entrench discrimination and lead to other human rights violations against LGBT people remained pending in Parliament.. In October and November a local publication, The Rolling Stone, published front page articles identifying people it said were homosexuals; one included the words Hang them. The articles contained names, pictures and in some cases addresses and other details. The people named included activists and human rights defenders. A number of people named in the publication complained of harassment and threats by people known to them. In November, some of the individuals named filed a civil law case in the High Court against the publishers, alleging violation of their rights to life, dignity and privacy. The Courts decision was pending at the end of the year. However, the authorities did not condemn the publication or take any measures to protect the people placed at the risk of violence by the articles.. LGBT individuals and rights ...

Over the years, the GCDD has produced or supported the production of three types of tools for advocates:. General guides for advocacy and social change work. In 1989, a community organizing manual, Action, This Means War!, was developed. In 1994, Making Your Case updated this publication by drawing on the perspectives of legislators in terms of what works to influence public policy change and understanding the process.. Checklists related to specific issues and situations. From 1987 to 1993, the GCDD developed checklists for quality individual plans, individual education plans, school integration, and family support. Read My Lips, a resource guide of activities and checklists using a person centered planning approach, looked at five ways of helping to increase the freedom of choice for people with developmental disabilities. Lt. Ashley Burroughs, who played a large part in the HOPE Trailer project, explains what people will see inside.. overdoses and fatalities linked to opioids saw a decrease in Charles County in 2018. Although its too early to determine if this will be a long-term trend, the agency is committed to prevention and education as part of its efforts to prevent abuse. As part of these efforts and by the hard work and dedication of many, the CCSO unveiled the HOPE (Heroin Overdose Prevention Education) trailer in the fall. This mobile educational tool was designed to raise awareness and inform parents of the warning signs related to drug abuse. The trailer - designed to resemble a teenagers bedroom - offers parents the opportunity to see where teens are likely to hide drugs..
