Post-harvest losses of agricultural produce caused by store grain pest most especially cereals and grains to store pest require developing cheap, ecofriendly and readily available insecticide to combat this threat and achieve the goal of food security in developing countries. This study investigated the effects of Cleistopholis patens (leaf and stem bark) on Plodia interpunctella infestation in stored maize grains. Powders from the plant were administered at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 g dosages to maize grains containing developmental stages of P. interpunctella both as contact and fumigant insecticides. The insecticidal activities were monitored at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h post-treatment periods. As a contact insecticide, C. patens was significantly (PË‚0.05) more effective than as a fumigant against all developmental stages of the pest. The leaf powder was observed to be weakly effective both as contact and fumigant against P. interpunctella. At its peak, 69.17% larval mortality was achieved at 2.5 g

When standard lists are uses for assigned values, all language variants stored in SysTax are indexed, so that e.g. for type and type can be searched. Likewise each holotypus is found when searching type. A multi-language query is also possible for all geographical data (Asien - Asia, Brasilien - Brazil). For each taxon the complete systematic hierarchy is indexed, so that also these higher taxa at any level can be searched (example: the search pattern Annonaceae Gottsberger Brazil gives all objects, that had been collected by Gottsberger in Brazil and that has a determination of Annonaceae or any taxon below this family). The collection search is available in a simple and an expert mode. The search result can be displayed in a short and in a detailed list. For the simple mode the short list is preset, for the expert mode the detailed list.. The search can also be carried out in such a way that the query fields are omitted in the result lists. By doing so, for example, type lists or ...

This application is directed to novel fluorinated polymers and prepolymers derived from mono-substituted oxetane monomers having fluorinated alkoxymethylene side-chains and the method of making these compositions. The mono-substituted fluorinated oxetane monomers having fluorinated alkoxymethylene side-chains are prepared in high yield by the reaction of a fluorinated alkoxides with either 3-halomethyl-3-methyloxetane premonomers or aryl sulfonate derivative of 3-hydroxymethyl-3-methyloxetane premonomers. Preparation of a mono-substituted 3-bromomethyl-3-methyloxetane premonomer via a simple, high yield process amenable to commercial scaleup is also disclosed. The fluorinated oxetane monomers of this invention can be readily homo/co-polymerized in the presence of a Lewis acid and polyhydroxy compounds to obtain hydroxy-terminated polyether prepolymers having fluorinated alkoxymethylene side chains. Additionally, the fluorinated oxetane monomers can be copolymerized with non-fluorinated monomers such as

Growth Habit: Guavas are evergreen, shallow-rooted shrubs or small trees to 33 ft, with spreading branches. Growth in California is rarely over 10 - 12 feet. The bark is smooth, mottled green or reddish brown and peels off in thin flakes to reveal the attractive bony aspect of its trunk. The plant branches close to the ground and often produces suckers from roots near the base of the trunk. Young twigs are quadrangular and downy.. Foliage: Guava leaves leaves are opposite, short-petioled, oval or oblong-elliptic, somewhat irregular in outline, 2 - 6 inches long and 1 - 2 inches wide. The dull-green, stiff but leathery leaves have pronounced veins, and are slightly downy on the underside. Crushed leaves are aromatic.. Flowers: Faintly fragrant, the white flowers, borne singly or in clusters in the leaf axils, are 1 inch wide, with 4 or 5 white petals. These petals are quickly shed, leaving a prominent tuft of perhaps 250 white stamens tipped with pale-yellow anthers.. Guavas are primarily ...

The Wettstein system, latest version published in 1935, did not use this name although it had an order with a similar circumscription with the name Polycarpicae. This was placed in the Dialypetalae in subclass Choripetalae of class Dicotyledones. (See also Sympetalae). From the above it will be clear that the plants included in this order by APG have always been seen as related. They have always been placed in the order Magnoliales (or a predecessor). The difference is that earlier systems have also included other plants, which have been moved to neighbouring orders (in the magnoliids) by APG. ...

Xylopia langsdorfiana A. St.-Hil. &Tul. (Annonaceae) is popularly known in the northeast of Brazil as pimenteira da terra, and an essential oil (XL-OE) was extracted from its leaves. Since Xylopia species are cited in folk medicine and diterpenes from X. langsdorfiana have spasmolytic activity, this study aimed to investigate a possible spasmolytic action of XL-OE on smooth muscle models. XL-OE (243 and 729g/mL) showed low pharmacologic efficacy on guinea pig trachea and rat aorta and uterus. However, in guinea pig ileum, XL-OE (27-729g/mL) inhibited carbachol or histamine-induced phasic contractions (1M) in a significant and concentration-dependent manner. in addition, XL-OE (81g/mL) reduced fluorescence intensity in ileal myocytes stimulated by histamine, indicating a decrease in cytosolic calcium concentration, which could explain the spasmolytic activity. Thus, XL-OE proved to be a promising natural product to be used in gastrointestinal diseases acting by modulating the cytosolic calcium ...

Fever is a complex physiological response triggered by infectious or aseptic stimuli. The present investigation was carried out to study the antipyretic activity of Polyalthia longifolia extracts in Wistar rats against Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) -induced pyrexia. P. longifolia Benth. & Hook. f. var. Pendula (Annonaceae) is an evergreen tropical tree well known for its numerous medicinal proper-ties. Methanol extracts of the leaves, stem bark and root of the plant were tested for their antipyret-ic activities at doses of 30, 100 and 300 mg kg-1 body weight using LPS-induced antipyretic activity model. All extracts showed significant (p , 0.001) dose-dependent antipyretic activity. At 300 mg kg-1, all extracts exhibited activities higher than that of Acetylsalicyclic acid (Aspirin) whose per-centage inhibition of pyrexia was 86%. The root extract was the most active with a percentage inhi-bition of 127.5%, followed by the leaf extract (123.0%) and the stem bark extract (99.2%). This study proves P. ...
Abstract: Annonaceous acetogenins are waxy substances consisting of C32 or C34 long chain fatty acids which have been combined with a propan-2-ol unit at C-2 to form a gama-lactone. They are only found in several genera of the plant family, Annonaceae. Their diverse bioactivities as antitumour, immunosuppressive, pesticidal, antiprotozoal, antifeedant, anthelmintic and antimicrobial agents have attracted more and more interest worldwide. Recently, we reported that the Annonaceous acetogenins can selectively inhibit the growth of cancerous cells and also inhibit the growth of adriamycin resistant tumour cells. As more acetogenins have been isolated and additional cytotoxicity assays have been conducted, we have noticed that, al(hough most acetogenins have high potencies among several solid human tumour cells lines, some of the derivatives within the different structural types and some positional isomers show remarkable selectivities among certain cell lines, e.g. against prostate cancer ...
Xylopia aethiopica, a plant found throughout West Africa, has both nutritional and medicinal uses. The present study aims to characterize the effects of extracts of this plant on cancer cells. We report that X. aethiopica extract prepared with 70% ethanol has antiproliferative activity against a panel of cancer cell lines. The IC50 was estimated at 12 μg/ml against HCT116 colon cancer cells, 7.5 μg/ml and | 25 μg/ml against U937 and KG1a leukemia cells, respectively. Upon fractionation of the extract by HPLC, the active fraction induced DNA damage, cell cycle arrest in G1 phase and apoptotic cell death. By using NMR and mass spectrometry, we determined the structure of the active natural product in the HPLC fraction as ent-15-oxokaur-16-en-19-oic acid. The main cytotoxic and DNA-damaging compound in ethanolic extracts of Xylopia aethiopica is ent-15-oxokaur-16-en-19-oic acid.

After soaking the Chinese Tree Peonies from Ali Express, some of them started to look promising. As you can see below on the tree peonies with long stems and short roots, after soaking them in water I started to notice some white or light colored nodules on the sides of the tree peony stems. These may turn into growth nodules, from which roots or stems may be generated in the spring. Also I figured out which tree peonies these are supposed to be. The one tree peony with a short stem and long roots is supposed to be the blue tree peony I ordered. The other 5 tree peonies with long stems and short roots were 2 yellow/orange tree peonies and the other 3 were the ones that were supposed to be the Ali Express Chinese Tree Peonies $5.52 for 3!. I had ordered 3 sets of 3 of these peonies. So I should have gotten 9 of those tree peonies, but they only sent 3. So I opened a dispute with Ali Express for that particular order ...

When the opening of the anther of the androecium occurs in the entire extension of the septum that divides the sacks pollen, which occurs more frequently, there is talk of longitudinal dehiscence. In the Lachemilla and the Hippocratea, on the other hand, the so-called transverse dehiscence.. These are not the only two possibilities of dehiscence in the androecium, but there are others that are characterized by a location in limited regions, which arise as windows or valves; is the case of the poricidal dehiscence, in which there is no tissue endothecium and therefore the exit of the pollen is carried out by means of the rupture of the tissue of the upper end of the anther and the formation of specific pores for this task.. The number of stamens in the androecium is highly variable: in some cases it can be only one, as in some Euphorbiaceae; the Oleaceae, for their part, they have two; in the Myrtaceae, several are appreciated. Taking these examples into account, the names given to the flowers ...
Magnolias floral shoot, with its uniquely rich and diverse phyllotaxis, has been modeled with application of a special program based on geometric model of phyllotaxis. First survey of phyllotactic diversity obtained in the library of 1200 computer simulations proved that, besides the most common main Fibonacci, also other patterns, frequently encountered in nature, such as Lucas and bijugy, are readily formed. This is a part of extensive studies aimed to elucidate the mechanism of phyllotactic fingerprint - the species or genet specific pattern of phyllotactic diversity, first in magnolia flowers and then in other plant structures and taxa ...
Pure compound screening has identified the dioxothiazino-quinoline-quinone ascidian metabolite ascidiathiazone A (2) to be a moderate growth inhibitor of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (IC50 3.1 μM) and Plasmodium falciparum (K1 dual drug resistant strain) (IC50 3.3 μM) while exhibiting low levels of cytotoxicity (L6, IC50 167 μM). A series of C-7 amide and Δ2(3) analogues were prepared that explored the influence of lipophilicity and oxidation state on observed anti-protozoal activity and selectivity. Little variation in anti-malarial potency was observed (IC50 0.62-6.5 μM), and no correlation was apparent between anti-malarial and anti-T. brucei activity. Phenethylamide 7e and Δ2(3)-glycine analogue 8k exhibited similar anti-Pf activity to 2 but with slightly enhanced selectivity (SI 72 and 93, respectively), while Δ2(3)-phenethylamide 8e (IC50 0.67 μM, SI 78) exhibited improved potency and selectivity towards T. brucei rhodesiense compared to the natural product hit. The Amazonian floodplains harbor highly diverse wetland forests, with angiosperms adapted to survive extreme floods and droughts. About 14% of the Amazon Basin is covered by floodplains, which are fundamental to river productivity, biogeochemical cycling and trophic flow, and have been subject to human occupation since Pre-Colombian times. The botanical knowledge about these forests is still incomplete, and current forest degradation rates are much higher than the rate of new botanical surveys. Herein we report the results of three years of botanical surveys in floodplain forests of the Central Amazon. This checklist contains 432 tree species comprising 193 genera and 57 families. The most represented families are Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Lauraceae, Sapotaceae, Annonaceae, and Moraceae representing 53% of the identified species. This checklist also documents the occurrence of approximately 236 species that have been rarely recorded as occurring in white-water floodplain forests.

SciDevNet reports that Thai officials have suspended a regulation requiring plant breeders to obtain government permission before using wild plant varieties and certain domesticated varieties in the production of commercial plant varieties, and to share with the government the benefits of using those resources. Plant breeders force rethink of Thai seed law. According to the article, the regulation-inspired by the Convention on Biological Diversity-entered into legal effect in January 2011, and the national department of agriculture was scheduled to begin enforcing it two months ago. However, plant breeders objected to its breadth and demanded that the term general domestic variety in the regulation be redefined to include only varieties of Thai origin. The president of the Thai Seed Trade Association reportedly told SciDevNet that the regulation is like a time bomb for the countrys private plant breeders, destroying their rights over new varieties, because plants kept by private breeders ...

Xylopic acid was isolated from the dried fruits of Xylopia aethiopica, crystalized and characterized. The isolate was used to synthesize five novel derivatives of xylopic acid and these have been sufficiently characterized. The structure of derivatives was related to the observed trend in terms of antimicrobial activity. Base catalyzed ester formation was employed in the synthesis of the esters while direct coupling with HBTU was employed in the synthesis of the amide derivative. Deacetylation of xylopic acid was achieved by refluxing xylopic acid with 10% methanolic KOH. The structures of the derivatives were confirmed using 1H NMR, mass spectrometry and IR spectroscopy. The broth dilution method was employed in the antimicrobial assay. All the synthesized derivatives were more active than xylopic acid against the microorganisms tested (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyrogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans). The ester derivatives were most active with MICs ...

Aporphines are a group of tetracyclic alkaloids that belong to the ubiquitous tetrahydroisoquinoline family. The aporphine template is known to be associated with a range of biological activities. Aporphines have been explored as antioxidants, anti-tuberculosis, antimicrobial and anticancer agents. Within the Central Nervous Systems (CNS), aporphine alkaloids are known to possess high affinity for several clinically valuable targets including dopamine receptors (predominantly D1 and D2), serotonin receptors (5-HT1A and 5-HT7) and α adrenergic receptors. Aporphines are also inhibitors of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme - a clinical target for the treatment of Alzheimers disease. Considering the diverse profile of aporphine alkaloids at CNS receptors they can be considered as
Camptothecin, an extract of the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata, is a potent inhibitor of topoisomerase I, a molecule required for DNA synthesis. Camptothecin has been shown to induce apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. Camptothecin is routinely used as a general method for inducing apoptosis.. ...

We have built a new isonucleoside derivative on a 2,6-dioxobicyclo[3.2.0]heptane skeleton as a potential anti-HIV agent. To synthesize the target compound, an acetal-protected dihydroxyacetone was first converted to a 2,3-epoxy-tetrahydrofuran derivative. Introduction of an azide group, followed by the formation of an oxetane ring, gave a pseudosugar derivative with a 2,6-dioxobicyclo[3.2.0]heptane skeleton. The desired isonucleoside was obtained by constructing a purine base moiety on the scaffold, followed by amination.
We report a case of primary sarcoma of the skin with a biphasic histological pattern, being composed of areas of mixed mesenchymal-epithelial cell proliferation and areas of purely sarcomatous growth. The tumor occurred in the posterior cervical region of a 93-year-old man, and its history was marked by sudden, rapid enlargement after many years of stable duration. The excised lesion was about 4 cm in diameter, had a firm consistency and was covered by intact skin. Histological examination showed a multifocal proliferation of follicular germinative cells arranged in corymbiform and petaloid shapes with an overall retiform growth pattern. Epithelial cords and strands were composed of cytologically uniform cells with bland nuclear features and were surrounded by a prominent, fibroblast-rich stroma reminiscent of a perifollicular sheath. In many areas of the tumor the stroma showed abrupt transition into a pleomorphic proliferation of large sarcomatous cells with frequent and often atypical ...

A series of novel C33-C35 hexacyclic benzohopanes (C33b-C35b) were identified in 39 samples of coal extracts and 39 crude oils of different ages from all over the world. C33b and C34b homologues were isolated, and their structures were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance. The structure of C35b benzohopane was proposed based on the mass spectrum and its similarity with the mass spectra of structurally defined C33b and C34b homologues. The structures of the C33b-C35b hexacyclic benzohopanes are closely related to isohopanes; both groups are typical for terrestrial organic matter and can be useful in the correlation analysis. A possible pathway of formation of these novel benzohopanes and their hopanoid precursors with an additional branch in the aliphatic side chain is proposed. C33b-C35b hexacyclic benzohopanes are stable up to the maturity level corresponding to random vitrinite reflectance (Rr) of ∼0.80%, which was demonstrated by analyzing the samples of different maturity and by the ...

The history wall, which charts milestones in the life of the Royal Free, was opened by James Sandwith who brought along the key for the building in Grays Inn Road which was the Royal Frees original home.. The Royal Free has always provided healthcare free of charge and so is a precursor to the NHS, founded 120 years later.. Dominic Dodd, the chairman of the trust, said: Its fair to say that Marsden would be amazed at the breadth and scale of services offered by the Royal Free today. The original hospital treated 900 patients a year - we are likely to treat more than 1.5million this year.. What he would recognise, though - which you can read more about in this display - is the pioneering spirit shown by many Royal Free clinicians in their efforts to do the best for their patients, whether through research, clinical care or the teaching of the clinicians of tomorrow. The history wall, which was funded by the Royal Free Charity, is located on the ground floor of the Royal Free Hospital and ...
