San Diego Zoo Global is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in San Diego that operates the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, and the San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy. Founded in 1916 as the Zoological Society of San Diego under the leadership of Harry M. Wegeforth, the organization claims the largest zoological society membership in the world, with more than 250,000 member households and 130,000 child memberships, representing more than half a million people. The organizations mission is to save vulnerable species through animal care based in conservation science. In its first few decades, the Zoological Society of San Diego worked to establish and build up the San Diego Zoo. Members of the organization formed groups that later became the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and American Association of Zoo Keepers. In the early 1970s the Society established the San Diego Wild Animal Park in the San Pasqual ...
The News & Observer reports on a recent symposium at North Carolina State University dealing with overweight zoo animals: Gorillas in the wild live on a bulky, low-calorie diet of such things as leaves, shoots and bark, but in zoos are often fed specially formulated biscuits. The biscuits offer nutrition, but arent bulky and dont fill up a peckish gorilla. That stresses out the primates and can lead to neurotic behavior. That also means that zoo gorillas -- who spend [...]

Veterinary Services is mainly concerned with livestock; however, the affiliated National Center for Import and Export regulates the import and export of zoo animals. Some animals imported from foreign countries for exhibition in zoos will be subject to the Centers regulations and oversight.. A facility can have up to three pre-licensing inspections in an attempt to meet the standards. The USDA is required to inspect research facilities once per year and conduct follow-up examinations until AWA violations are corrected. [25] They may also engage in any inspections deemed necessary pursuant to a complaint. [26] With the exception of the pre-licensing procedure, all subsequent inspections are unannounced. [27] APHIS employs 104 inspectors to survey the 2,000+ licensed facilities currently in existence. [28] Despite these seeming protections under the AWA, constraints of budgets and logistics often frustrate the enforcement of the Act. Not only is enforcement under the act inadequate, but private ...

Tortoise callipers and camel scales are put to good use at ZSL London Zoo, which is holding its annual animal weigh-in. While keepers put on a show for the cameras, it is important that the zoo keeps up-to-date size and weight information on its animals to compare them with animals in the wild and in other zoos, as well as to have an indication of which animals are pregnant.
Crowded house. Most ant colonies live in nests on or under the ground or in trees, but some ant species live in clusters, not building any nests at all. Most ant colonies have a queen, large numbers of female worker ants, and occasionally some males. The queens only job is to lay eggs, and this she does throughout her entire life. But how does she begin her reign?. Queen for a day (or much longer). A young winged queen leaves her birth colony on her first and only flight with a number of winged males. Males are only produced for mating purposes and do no work other than to fertilize virgin queens. Mating flights typically include neighboring ant colonies, and the signals for this coordinated nuptial swarm are still not fully understood. After the queen and males mate, the males die. The young queen now finds a good site to make her nest and start her colony. She rakes the wings off her body, as she no longer needs them for her new life. The queen begins her new colony there, laying eggs and ...
Chinese silver grass has become an invasive species in parts of the US, including California and many states of the Southeast. It can be found growing in large clumps, making it harder for native grasses and other plants to survive. Fortunately, some of the ornamental cultivars are sterile, so savvy gardeners can grow this lovely grass without fear of contributing to habitat loss. For other cultivars, cutting off the developing seed heads prevents seeds from developing and dispersing to where they dont belong. Still, rhizomes may spread this grass into places you dont want it.. ...
Every zoo animal has a unique story and a journey all their own. Some animals come to the Fort Wayne Childrens zoo as adults and some are born here and move on to new adventures at other zoos. The lemur and wildebeest babies born at the zoo in 2014 fall into a different category. Theyre growing up right here in Fort Wayne and zoo guests get to see it all!. Back in September one of the zoos ring-tailed lemurs, Kyna, gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Zoo keepers named her Madi and guests had a chance to see mom and baby on exhibit for a few weeks before the close of the 2014 season. Madi has grown quite a bit and is almost as big as the other three lemurs in her troop. Zoo keeper Helena Lacey explains lemur behavior, Madi would stay with her family in the wild, so she stays with them at the zoo. Shes weaned now and eats the same diet as the adults. Lacey has also begun training Madi using operant conditioning. Zoo keepers train animals on behaviors such as moving indoors when it gets cold ...

In the wallabies of Tasmania, births occur between late January and July with the majority of young born in February and March. On mainland Australia, females give birth in all months. Being marsupials, they give birth after a very short gestation period (about 30 days). The immature embryo is expelled through the urogenital sinus and must wriggle along a path of dampened fur from the mothers tail to her pouch. Inside the pouch the embryo attaches to a teat for suckling. The female will mate again very soon after giving birth, but if a young is already established in the pouch, the new embryo stops developing when it is only a ball of cells (the blastocyst stage). This process is known as embryonic diapause or delayed implantation. The new embryo does not start to develop until the young already present in the pouch is ready to leave or dies. It is possible for a female to be suckling a young in her pouch, a larger young outside the pouch and be carrying an undeveloped embryo. Quite remarkable ...
Domestic ferrets use a variety of body language. Some of these behaviors are dancing, wrestling, and stalking. They will dance when they are happy and excited, hopping in every direction. Wrestling is a behavior that involves two or more ferrets. They will roll around with each other, biting and kicking, usually in a playful manner. Stalking is sneaking up on a toy or other animal in a low crouched position. Domestic ferrets have an instinct to habitually urinate and defecate in the same places, and therefore can be trained to use a litter box ...

A snow leopard at the San Diego Zoo has tested positive for COVID-19 - forcing the zoo to temporarily shut down its leopard habitat to visitors, officials said Friday.. Zoo staff first noticed that Ramil, a 9-year-old male snow leopard, had a cough and a runny nose on Thursday, and sent the animals stool to be tested, according to a statement from the San Diego Wildlife Alliance.. The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System confirmed the presence of the virus, the organization said.. The zoo is waiting for the US Department of Agricultures National Veterinary Services Laboratories to also confirm the results.. It is not yet clear how the leopard contracted the virus.. The zoo said that it is closely monitoring Ramils health. The animal appears to be doing well, and has been quarantined, along with a female snow leopard and two Amur leopards who share a space and were also likely exposed.. …. According to the zoo, the gorilla troop that caught COVID-19 from an ...

The Brookfield Zoo outside Chicago puts gorillas like these on a diet system like Weight Watchers, staff nutritionist Jennifer Watts told CNN affiliate WLS. Each food item has a specific point value attached, and animals have limits for how many points they can accumulate. A gorilla gets two points for a cube of sugary fruit juice, while a polar bear gets one point for each of its beloved granola bars.. Zoo Atlanta doesnt use an official point system, but strives to provide a low-calorie, healthy diet for its animals too. This zoo has moved away from fruit juices for primates - now their orangutans and gorillas get Crystal Light. It may have less sugar, but they like the low-calorie alternative just as much, the zoos senior veterinarian Dr. Maria Crane said in an interview for this blog.. Zoo animals have a particular risk for becoming overweight because they do not have to forage or hunt for food the way they would in the wild, Crane said. To encourage the animals to move about, zoo staffers ...
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens ten painted dog pups and their mom, Imara, received special enrichment in the form of a USDA-inspected goat carcass this morning in their public exhibit. Simulating a wild feeding increases the dogs mental and physical activity, provides nutritional benefits, and encourages natural sharing behavior unique to this species. Carcass feeding also provides guests with an opportunity to see some of the Zoos most active animals displaying their natural behaviors.. Other Zoos do carcass feedings, but this is a new enrichment activity for the Cincinnati Zoos carnivores. The carcasses, typically goats or pigs, are ordered by the Zoos nutritionist specifically for this purpose and have no prior affiliation to the Zoos animal collection. A carcass is prepared by first removing the head and innards to eliminate risk of disease, and then by freezing it overnight to kill any parasites.. African painted dogs are carnivores just like us! Tara, a Sumatran orangutan at the Fort Wayne Childrens Zoo, delivered a healthy female baby in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 22.. The baby is the only Sumatran orangutan born in a United States zoo in 2014, so she represents a significant addition to the population of critically endangered Sumatran orangutans.. We are thrilled with the outcome so far, said Zoo Animal Curator Mark Weldon. Tara is doing everything she should to care for her baby.. Zoo keepers and veterinary staff expected 19-year-old Tara to give birth between mid-November and early December. They had been watching Tara by remote camera overnight for several weeks. When keepers observed Tara pacing late Friday in her off-exhibit bedroom, they suspected she was in labor and arrived at the zoo to monitor the birth. Taras labor lasted a few hours, and she delivered her baby unassisted.. Immediately following the delivery, Tara began cleaning her infant and placed it in her nest - a pile of wood wool and blankets ...

For me, the real question is not who to blame, but why anyone was in a situation in which they had to make a choice between the life of a human child and the life of an endangered teenage gorilla in the first place. Keeping wild animals in captivity is fraught with problems. This tragic choice arose only because we keep animals in zoos.. Though killing is less common at U.S. zoos compared with the regular practice of culling at European ones, zoos are nonetheless places that cause death. Harambes life was cut short intentionally and directly, but for many zoo animals, simply being in captivity shortens their lives. We know this is true for whales in SeaWorld. Elephants, too, die prematurely in zoos. So why have zoos?. One of the reasons often given is that zoos protect and conserve endangered wild animals. A few zoos do fund conservation efforts - the Cincinnati Zoo is one of them. These efforts are laudable, and I would hope that in light of the tragedy the Cincinnati Zoo will spend more to ...
Mysore Zoo (officially the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens) is a 157-acre (64 ha) zoo located near the palace in Mysore, India. It is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in India, and is home to a wide range of species (168). Mysore Zoo is one of the citys most popular attractions. While mainly depending on entry fees for its financing, an adoption scheme introduced in the early 2000s has been a success. Celebrities, institutions, and animal lovers have contributed directly to the welfare of the zoo inmates. Mysore Zoo was created in 1892 on 10 acres (4.0 ha) of the summer palace of Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar, and was originally called the Palace Zoo. The zoo was originally set up by G.H. Krumbiegel, a German landscaper and horticulturist. Over the next 10 years the zoo was expanded to 45 acres (18 ha) with spacious enclosures that are still in use. The zoo was opened to the public in 1902, and now includes a bandstand and an artificial lake. It was given to the Department of Parks ...

WILLIAMS, J H et al. Barbiturate ingestion in three adult captive tigers (Panthera tigris) and concomitant fatal botulism of one. J. S. Afr. Vet. Assoc. [online]. 2011, vol.82, n.4, pp.244-249. ISSN 2224-9435.. Zoo animals, including tigers, have been reported to suffer from barbiturate intoxication, with pentabarbitone being most commonly recorded. Clinical signs range from mild ataxia to general anaesthesia with recovery over hours to days with several factors affecting hepatic barbiturate metabolism and tissue partitioning. Botulism is an often fatal intoxication in man, animals, birds and certain fish. The occurrence in carnivores is uncommon to rare, with only 2 reports found of botulism in felids. This report relates to 3 adult captive cohabiting tigers that simultaneously developed signs of abdominal discomfort, progressive ataxia, recumbency and comatose sleep resembling stage 2 anaesthesia, alternating with periods of distracted wakefulness and ataxic movements. These signs occurred 4 ...
NORTH, Michelle A. et al. Suspected lead poisoning in two captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) in South Africa, in 2008 and 2013. J. S. Afr. Vet. Assoc. [online]. 2015, vol.86, n.1, pp.01-05. ISSN 2224-9435. http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/JSAVA.v86i1.1286.. Whilst lead poisoning in raptors, scavenging birds and waterfowl is well studied and common knowledge, there is surprisingly little literature detailing the risk to mammalian scavengers and captive carnivores fed hunted meat. This case report describes the death of two captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) following acute onset of nervous symptoms. Clinical signs included hyper-excitability, seizures, arched back, tail held abnormally high and hyper-salivation. Necropsy findings included bullets or a bullet in their stomachs. Kidney and liver lead levels from one cheetah (15.6 ppm and 17 ppm respectively) were consistent with a diagnosis of lead poisoning; liver from the second cheetah was not available for testing. Both animals were ...

Milwaukee, Wis., July 17, 2015 - For its July centennial Gift to the Community, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation is helping the Milwaukee County Zoo add two snow leopards to its animal collection.. The Zoos 1-year-old snow leopard cub, Sossy, died unexpectedly on June 5, leaving only Sossys mother, adult female Tomiris. The Zoo plans to acquire a male and a female snow leopard with the Foundations gift.. The acquisition of two snow leopards will be very important to the inter-Zoo and international cooperation of captive management of these endangered felines, said Zoo director Chuck Wikenhauser. It will help the Zoo continue to play a meaningful part in snow leopard conservation.. The new snow leopards will be imported from Europe, which will add new genetics to the American population. This benefits the long-term survival of the species. There is no certain timeline for the animals arrival due to variables related to securing permits, transportation and health requirements, but Zoo ...

In captivity, cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) frequently suffer from several unusual chronic diseases that rarely occur in their free-ranging counterparts. In order to develop a better understanding of their metabolism and health we documented the urine organic acids of 41 apparently healthy captive cheetahs, in an untargeted metabolomic study, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 339 organic acids were detected and annotated. Phenolic compounds, thought to be produced by the anaerobic fermentation of aromatic amino acids in the distal colon, as well as their corresponding glycine conjugates, were present in high concentrations. The most abundant organic acids in the cheetahs urine were an as yet unidentified compound and a novel cadaverine metabolite, tentatively identified as N1,N5-dimethylpentane-1,5-diamine. Pantothenic acid and citramalic acid concentrations correlated negatively with age, while glutaric acid concentrations correlated positively with age, suggesting possible ...

The human-animal bond encompasses a wide range of emotional, physical and physiological effects induced by close, especially long-term, close interaction between a human and an animal. Considering it a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that is influenced by behaviors that are essential to the health and well-being of both, the American Veterinary Medical Association established a committee that develops policies, for veterinarians and the human companions of the animals, to encourage its benefits.[1] This bond is best known with companion animals, but there can be close bonds, for example, between zoo animals and the staff that work with them, and, to a lesser extent, between wild and semi-tame animals and humans when their territories cross. The bond can extend beyond death. The best known example in the Western Hemisphere is probably that of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier. Bobby guarded his owners grave for fourteen years, until his own death. Bobby ...

The Potter Park Zoo team is preparing to say farewell to one of its well-known animal residents. Liya the female Amur tiger is heading to another zoo following a breeding recommendation from the Amur Tiger Species Survival Program (SSP).. The SSP program, managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), strives to maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations in accredited zoos. This requires strategic management and planning for the individual animals within the breeding population. Liya is leaving Potter Park Zoo for a breeding placement at another AZA accredited zoo.. I was incredibly fortunate to be part of the team that hand raised Liya and her sisters, said Annie Marcum, Carnivore and Primate Area Lead Keeper. It has been amazing to watch her grow and become a tiger with an amazing personality that developed trusting relationships with the animal care staff. Experiencing Liyas life so far has been a highlight of my career. She will be missed terribly, but we very much look ...

Haseena, a year older, was also brought on the same day from Hyderabad on instructions from the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZAI). The cubs are very active and constantly are always seen in the company of their mother Haseena. They resemble their father, Ranadheer who weighs 275 kg and has a chubby look, says the in-charge curator of the Zoo.. The Central Zoo Authority of India sent a scientist on Monday from Delhi to SVZP to ...
The Zoo began as Wade Park in 1882 after Jeptha H. Wade donated 73-acres of land and 14 American deer to the City of Cleveland. By 1907, however, Cleveland City Council had laid plans to build the Cleveland Museum of Art and decided to move the Zoo to its current location.. The animals kept in the early Zoo were mostly of local origin, but the next thirty years saw the building of the Zoos first Monkey Island, Sea Lion Pools and bear exhibit before the Cleveland Natural History Museum assumed control in 1940.. In November 1940,a new Asian elephant arrived at the Zoo. The Cleveland News sponsored an elephant naming contest, with the winning name Osa submitted by a 12-year-old boy from Cleveland Heights. However, the elephant had a name, Frieda, to which she had responded for many years. Its extremely difficult to change names in the middle of an elephants life. A few years after the elephant had been living at the Zoo, one of her ex-trainers happened to visit her and called to her by her ...

Once these signs were present, staff decided to introduce the pair, which were to be a part of a Europe-wide tiger conservation program for the endangered Sumatran subspecies. However, things quickly escalated.. Their introduction began as predicted, but quickly escalated into a more aggressive interaction, the zoo said.. Within minutes of the introduction, Asim, 7, had killed Melati, 10, even though aversion techniques were used to try and distract the fighting pair.. The use of loud noises, flares, and alarms was implemented and Asim, whose name, ironically, means protector in Arabic, was eventually placed back into a separate enclosure. However, it was too late by that stage and Melati had already perished.. Everyone here at ZSL London Zoo is devastated by the loss of Melati and we are heartbroken by this turn of events, the zoo said in a statement. ...

CINCINNATI (March 28, 2016)- Since 2010, three Brazilian ocelot kittens, females Milagre, Ayla, and Revy, have been produced using artificial insemination (AI) techniques developed and performed by scientists from the Cincinnati Zoos Center for Conservation & Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW). All three of these genetically-valuable ocelots have gone on to produce offspring of their own as a result of natural breeding. The most recent kitten was born at the Santa Ana Zoo in December to Revy, the last of the three AI offspring to reproduce.. Without the AI option, Milagre, Ayla and Revy - and all of their subsequent offspring - would have never existed and the long-term genetic viability of our Brazilian ocelot population would have been further diminished as a consequence, said Dr. Bill Swanson, CREWs Director of Animal Research and one of the worlds authorities on breeding endangered small cats. Only 30 Brazilian ocelots exist in North American Zoos, and seven, or nearly one ...
Elephants living in zoos have shorter lives than their wild counterparts, according to a new study that will most certainly stir debate about their captive situations. Researchers compared the life spans of elephants in European zoos with those living in Amboseli National Park in Kenya and others working on a timber enterprise in Myanmar. Animals in the wild or in natural working conditions had life spans twice that or more of their relatives in zoos.. The new findings were published in the journal Science where researchers wrote obesity is a leading cause of death in adult zoo elephants, and stress is a killer of young animals moved between zoos.. In recent years, animal care activists have campaigned to discourage keeping elephants in zoos due to the lack of space and small numbers of animals that can be kept in a group. The median life span for African elephants in European zoos was 16.9 years, compared with 56 years for elephants who died of natural causes in Kenyas Amboseli Park. For the ...
Sydney, Austrailia A 7-year-old boy broke into a popular Outback zoo, fed a string of animals to the resident crocodile and bashed several lizards to death with a rock, the zoos director said Friday.. The 30-minute rampage, caught on the zoos security camera, happened early Wednesday after the boy jumped a security fence at the Alice Springs Reptile Center in central Australia, said zoo director Rex Neindorf.. The child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoos beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to Terry, an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile, said Neindorf.. The boy also fed several live animals to Terry by throwing them over the two fences surrounding the crocodiles enclosure, at one point climbing over the outer fence to get closer to the giant reptile.. In the footage, the boys face remains largely blank, Neindorf said, adding: It was like he was playing a game.. By the time he was done, 13 animals worth around ...
BEHAVIOUR AND FOOD HABIT : Eastern grey kangaroos are gregarious and form open-membership groups. The groups are made up of 2-3 females and their offspring with the same number of males of which one is dominant. They exist in a dominance hierarchy and the dominant individuals gain access to better sources of food and areas of shade. However, kangaroos are not territorial and usually fight only when females are in estrous. Females may form strong kinship bonds with their female relatives. Females with living female relatives have a greater chance of reproducing. They are predominantly grazing animal. They are herbivores, but will eat a range of plants including fungi in some cases. With the grasses they prefer to eat young green shoots. ...

Genetic diversity of captive wild animals can be enhanced by moving those individuals with valuable genes between collections and through introduction of a new pair from a range country. This requires movement of animals, which is inherent with disease risks, such as the introduction of pathogenic Mycobacterium sp. (MTBC) into a zoological collection. Decisions need to be made based on the outcome of perimovement disease screening using an array of tests, the majority of which are unvalidated in the species. A pair of endangered Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) imported from India to the United Kingdom were screened for MTBC using the comparative intradermal tuberculosis (TB) test, the feline interferon-c blood test, and the experimental bacteriophage assay. Reactions on all three tests prompted screening of the three resident Asiatic lions using the same tests, all of which were negative for MTBC. Based on these test results, the decision had to be made to exclude the genetically valuable ...
The once thriving captive-born southern white rhinoceros population is being threatened by their diet, according to new research. San Diego Zoo Global researchers predict that phytoestrogens in the rhinoceros´ food may be causing reproductive failure in the females.. In a press release detailing the research, Christopher Tubbs, researcher with the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research explained the importance of the study.. Understanding why the captive white rhinoceros population has been dwindling for decades is an important part of protecting the future of this species. Our work is the first step toward determining if phytoestrogens are involved in this phenomenon and whether we need to reevaluate captive white rhino diets.. Zoologists have only recently found the northern and southern white rhinoceros to be different species´ rather than a subspecies of the African white rhinoceros. As such, conservation efforts have been specifically designed to increase the population of ...
The distribution on serovars of 60 Salmonella isolates from reptiles kept in captivity in Denmark during the period 1995-2006 was investigated. The isolates were all recovered from clinical specimens submitted to the National Veterinary Institute. A majority of the samples were from reptiles in zoological gardens or similar, while a minor number was from reptiles kept in private homes. A total of 43 serovars were detected, most of them being what is usually called exotic serotypes, and many not having a trivial name, while a few isolates belonged to well-known human pathogenic serovars, such as S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, S. Bovismorbificans. One isolate was rough and two were non-typeable. Isolates from turtles belonged to the subspecies enterica, while many isolates from both sauria and snakes belonged to other subspecies. The findings underline the potential zoonotic risk by handling reptiles in zoological garden or other public settings, or keeping pet reptiles in private homes ...

The following morning, we moved the chick into its new home in the APCs Brooder Room. A brooder is a warm, humid box that mimics the environment under a parent bird. It is important that the chick never become imprinted on its human surrogates, so this particular brooder is covered with a towel, set behind a curtain, and continuously serenaded by a CD of soothing rain forest sounds to drown out the keepers voices. When it comes time to feed the baby, we put a sheet (or ghost) over our head and use a harpy eagle puppet to deliver the food.. The chick finally woke up and took its first small meal of diced pinkie mice at 4 p.m., 21 hours after hatching. It was the beginning of a gluttony that will turn this 73-ounce puffball into the most powerful avian predator on Earth!. Be sure to check back for regular updates.. Although the development of semen cryopreservation in the African elephants (Loxodonta africana) has been accomplished, effective procedures for cryopreservation of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) spermatozoa have not been established. In the present study, we investigate the freezing methods for conservation of Asian elephant spermatozoa under field conditions and identify the most suitable freezing protocols which provide acceptable post-thaw semen quality. Semen was collected from two Asian elephant bulls (EM1 and EM2, 10 ejaculates from each bull) by manual manipulation and were assessed for volume, pH, sperm cell concentration, and progressive motility. Eight out of 20 ejaculates were of acceptable quality (progressive motility≥60%), and were used for cryopreservation studies. Semen were frozen in TEST+glycerol, TEST+DMSO, HEPT+glycerol, or HEPT+DMSO. The post-thaw progressive sperm motilities were assessed, and sperm cells were stained with PI and FITC-PNA for membrane and acrosomal ...

Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus). From Takahashi & Takahashi Spatial distribution and size of small canopy gaps created by Japanese black bears: estimating gap size using dropped branch measurements. Evolution: Fantastic history of the fox. A synthesis of mitochondrial sequence data from central Asian and European red fox populations unravels the evolutionary history of this species over the last 300,000 years, and uncovers a remarkable similarity to the phylogeographic patterns observed in other carnivores such as brown bears and grey wolves, which share a similar range.. Infectious diseases: Theres something in the water. Risk of systemic infection from opportunistic fungal pathogens may be very high among immunocompromised patients undergoing hospital treatment. Although air-borne pathogens are a well-studied route to infection, the incidence of water-borne infection is less well known. The black-footed ferret is solitary, except when breeding or raising litters.[8][9] It is nocturnal[8][19] and primarily hunts for sleeping prairie dogs in their burrows.[20] It is most active above ground from dusk to midnight and 4 am to mid-morning.[11] Aboveground activity is greatest during late summer and early autumn when juveniles become independent.[11] Climate generally does not limit black-footed ferret activity,[9][11] but it may remain inactive inside burrows for up to 6 days at a time during winter.[21]. Female black-footed ferrets have smaller home ranges than males. Home ranges of males may sometimes include the home ranges of several females.[9] Adult females usually occupy the same territory every year. A female that was tracked from December to March occupied 39.5 acres (16 ha). Her territory was overlapped by a resident male that occupied 337.5 acres (137 ha) during the same period. The average density of black-footed ferrets near Meeteetse, Wyoming, is estimated at one ...
