A 3-month-old male cat in the animal facility was presented for investigation of anorexia and occasional vomiting. We collected the specimens from gastroscopic biopsy and stool collection. The gastroscopic biopsy specimens were tested using a rapid urease test, CLO Helicobacter-detection kits. Stool specimens were gathered and evaluated using the commercially available SD Bioline H. pylori Ag kit according to the manufacturers instructions. Genomic DNAs from gastroscopic biopsy and stool specimens of the cat were extracted and submitted to the consensus PCR to amplify Helicobacter rpoB gene. Then the DNAs from gastroscopic biopsy and stool specimens were conducted a multiplex species-specific PCR to amplify urease B gene for H. heilmannii, H. pylori and H. felis. As the results, the rapid urease test with gastroscopic biopsy was revealed positive reaction. The result of H. pylori Stool Ag assay was one red line, negative for H. pylori. Xenopus laevis, the African clawed frog, is commonly used in developmental and toxicology research studies. Little information is available on aged X. laevis; however, with the complete mapping of the genome and the availability of transgenic animal models, the number of aged animals in research colonies is increasing. The goals of this study were to obtain biochemical and hematologic parameters to establish reference intervals for aged X. laevis and to compare results with those from young adult X. laevis. Blood samples were collected from laboratory reared, female frogs (n = 52) between the ages of 10 and 14 y. Reference intervals were generated for 30 biochemistry analytes and full hematologic analysis; these data were compared with prior results for young X. laevis from the same vendor. The anthracycline doxorubicin (DOX) is an exceptionally good antineoplastic agent, but its use is limited by formation of metabolites which induce acute and chronic cardiac toxicities. Whereas the acute toxicity is mild, the chronic toxicity can produce a life-threatening cardiomyopathy. Studies in laboratory animals are of limited value in predicting the structure and reactivity of toxic metabolites in humans; therefore, we used an ethically acceptable system which is suitable for exploring DOX metabolism in human myocardium. The system involves cytosolic fractions from myocardial samples obtained during aorto-coronary bypass grafting. Laboratory animal allergy is a serious health problem. We examined several possible allergen-reducing strategies that might be effective in the working mouse room. Ambient allergen concentrations were measured when mice were maintained under several conditions: conventional housing versus ventilated cage racks operated under negative or positive pressure. We found that housing mice in ventilated cages operated under negative pressure and using ventilated changing tables reduced ambient mouse allergen (Mus m 1) concentrations tenfold, compared with values when mice were housed in conventional caging and using a conventional (non-ventilated) changing table. Housing mice in positively pressurized cages versus conventional cages did not reduce ambient allergen values. OBJECTIVES: To study the role of exposure, atopy, and smoking in the development of laboratory animal allergy (LAA) in a retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Between 1977 and 1993, 225 people received a pre-employment screening when they started a job at a Dutch research institute where they were going to work with laboratory animals. After active follow up 136 of them (60.4%) could be traced and were sent a questionnaire with extensive questions on allergic symptoms, smoking habits, and job history. 122 people (89.7%) sent back a completed questionnaire. Those who were accepted for a job at the institute and did not have allergic symptoms at the start of the job were selected as cohort members. After selecting people with complete data on start and end date of jobs, exposure intensity, atopy, and smoking, the cohort consisted of 99 people with an average time of follow up of 9.7 years. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding what methods of killing are humane for many species and stages of development. In 2013, an international group of researchers and stakeholders met at Newcastle University, United Kingdom to discuss the latest research and which methods could currently be considered most humane for the most commonly used laboratory species (mice, rats and zebrafish). Studies of the pathogenesis of human diseases have benefited from the availability of small laboratory animal models for many years. Mutant mice are particularly useful for investigating the interplay of genetic and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of common, but multifactorial, diseases (5). However, there is a major handicap for studies involving the endogenous redox systems of humans and mice: humans (and other primates) lack the ability to synthesize ascorbic acid because of a loss of function in the gene (Gulo) coding for a key synthetic enzyme, l-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase (6), whereas mice have the functional gene. As a consequence, mouse tissues generally have high levels of ascorbic acid, which are only slightly influenced by exogenous vitamin C. In contrast, humans depend entirely on vitamin C derived from the diet. Guinea pigs also have lost this enzyme function and depend on dietary vitamin C (7). We examined in-vivo micro-CT and micro-PET as non-invasive tools to assess pulmonary fibrosis in mice.. Material/Methods: Pulmonary fibrosis was induced in mice by intratracheal delivery of an adenoviral gene vector encoding biologically active TGF-β1. Respiratory gated and ungated micro-CT was performed in 18 mice at 1 to 4 weeks after pulmonary adenoviral gene vector delivery. In 5 additional mice 18F-FDG micro-PET and micro-CT was performed. Imaging was correlated to histopathology and findings in animals exposed to a control vector. Radiation doses were measured using thermoluminescence dosimeters..
