TY - JOUR. T1 - Anesthesia protocols in laboratory animals used for scientific purposes. AU - Lo Monte, Attilio Ignazio. AU - Palumbo, Vincenzo Davide. AU - Cassata, Giovanni. AU - Fazzotta, Salvatore. AU - Cicero, Luca. AU - Cassata, Giovanni. AU - Cicero, Luca. PY - 2018. Y1 - 2018. N2 - Background: A suitable, effective and free of complications anesthetic protocol is very important in experimental studies on animal models since it could bias the outcome of a trial. To date there is no universally accepted protocol for induction, maintenance and recovery from anesthesia. The endotracheal intubation with the use of inhalation anesthesia is used very especially in the from of large size laboratory animals, because it is a secure and easy control mode. However, it is not common for small laboratory animals because of the high technical skills required. Aim: The aim of this paper is a review of the main methods of induction of anesthesia in laboratory animals. Materials and methods: We performed ...
An adult feline blood donor, group-housed in a closed colony with other blood donor cats in a laboratory animal facility, developed anorexia, abdominal pain, an abdominal mass effect, and hemorrhagic diarrhea. Ultimately Salmonella infection was diagnosed. The index cat and 2 additional cats in the closed colony had clinical signs consistent with Salmonella and yielded Salmonella serotype 4,12:i:- in fecal cultures. An extensive search for the source of Salmonella was unrewarding. With the implementation of individual housing and additional barrier precautions, combined with antibiotic treatment of the index case, all the cats survived and subsequently had multiple, negative Salmonella PCR test results. This case report highlights the potential for unlikely infections to occur, even in a closed colony of research animals, as well as the important role of sanitation in the elimination of this enteric pathogen ...
Xenopus laevis, the African clawed frog, is commonly used in developmental and toxicology research studies. Little information is available on aged X. laevis; however, with the complete mapping of the genome and the availability of transgenic animal models, the number of aged animals in research colonies is increasing. The goals of this study were to obtain biochemical and hematologic parameters to establish reference intervals for aged X. laevis and to compare results with those from young adult X. laevis. Blood samples were collected from laboratory reared, female frogs (n = 52) between the ages of 10 and 14 y. Reference intervals were generated for 30 biochemistry analytes and full hematologic analysis; these data were compared with prior results for young X. laevis from the same vendor. Parameters that were significantly higher in aged compared with young frogs included calcium, calcium:phosphorus ratio, total protein, albumin, HDL, amylase, potassium, CO2, and uric acid. Parameters found to ...
Any research, teaching, or creative activity that involves the use of vertebrate animals must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) prior to ordering animals and prior to commencement of the activity. Applications for such approval may be obtained from the director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) or from the Univer-sity coordinator for research compliance. The chairs, deans, and division heads of departments in which laboratory animals are routinely used also have a supply of these applications.. The following is a brief summary of the federal, state, and campus regulations that govern the use of laboratory animals at Stony Brook:. 1. Except as stated in provision 2, all vertebrate animals must be ordered through DLAR. If a University purchase order is unacceptable to the supplier, the DLAR must be so informed in order to determine whether another supplier may be contacted.. 2. The IACUC may waive the requirement of mandatory acquisition of ...

The potential application of systems analysis to animal breeding program design is reviewed and discussed. The quantitative nature of animal breeding facilitates computer modeling. Since breeding program design involves the integration of several sub-systems, modeling seems a practical alternative and complement to experimentation to address the complex questions and potential interactions involved. The relative merits of computer modeling and laboratory animal modeling are discussed with value seen for both. Some areas suggested as being worthy of such approaches are 1) definition of bio-economic objective, 2) interactions between genetic characteristics and management, 3) costs versus returns for complex selection schemes, 4) interactions between crossbreeding and selection response, 5) interactions between selection and expansion, 6) implications of enhanced reproduction. Examples of computer simulation studies and potential laboratory animal studies to address some of these questions and ...

Adolescence is a conserved developmental period characterized by ontogenetic alterations in brain and behavior that often bear notable similarities across species, including increases in peer-directed social behaviors, risk-taking, as well as elevated per occasion use of alcohol. Studies using a rodent model of adolescence have shown that, seemingly due in part to age differences in brain function and in expression of acute tolerance, adolescents are more resistant than are adults to alcohol effects that normally serve as cues to moderate drinking, while conversely showing greater sensitivity to ethanol-induced social stimulation. To the extent that these findings in laboratory animals are relevant to human adolescents, this developmental blending of enhanced/attenuated ethanol sensitivities may encourage relatively high levels of consumption, particularly among adolescents who are otherwise at risk for especially elevated alcohol intake because of genetic or environmentally associated ...

While at MIT, Ira and I concentrated mostly on the E. coli mutant Gro15. Although the vast majority of λcl− phage are unable to form plaques on this strain, I noted the appearance, at an approximate frequency of 10−7, of phage mutants that were able to somehow compensate for the gro15 block. Interestingly, none of the phage mutants isolated on Gro15 formed plaques on our other mutant, GroC3. Searching for clues as to their nature, I purified many of these gro15 compensatory phage mutants and tested them for growth on standard E. coli laboratory strains, including supD, supE, supF (am-suppressing), and various sup0 (nonsuppressing) wild-type bacterial hosts. To my great surprise and delight, ∼20% of these λ compensatory mutants did not form plaques on any of the wild-type sup0 E. coli tested, but did grow on all of the various am-suppressing wild-type strains. Thus, these phage compensatory mutants carried a suppressible am mutation in some essential, yet unknown, phage gene. This finding ...

Any good pet owner knows that keeping your dogs on a leash or in a cage is not the most optimal way to raise them. At some point during the day, dogs need to be walked or at the very least, let out of the house to for sun and fresh air. To make this possible, a good fencing system must be in place to keep your new (and old) dogs safe within your property.. But what kind of fence works best for a new dog? While old mutts could have undergone training to not cross the threshold or your gate, new pups would need to be taught of which areas they can and cannot cross. This can be done through familiarizing them with boundaries. Start off by doing some research on fence installation.. ...
CAL-101 is a quinazoline-(S)-2-{1-[(9H-purin-6-yl)amino]propyl}-5-fluoro-3-phenylquinazolin-4(3H)-1-that inhibits PI3Kδ with IC50 value of 2.5nM in vitro (84). The compound inhibits other class I PI3Ks only at much higher concentrations (40- to 300-fold higher IC50) and has essentially no activity against other lipid kinases and protein kinases including the PIKK-family kinases mTOR and DNA-PK (84, 85). In cell-based assays, CAL-101 blocks PI3Kδ-dependent responses at greater than 240-fold lower concentrations than responses dependent on other isoforms (85).. For the first CAL-101 study in human disease, Calistoga selected allergic rhinitis (Clinical Trials identifier NCT00836914). This choice reflects the initial positioning of PI3Kδ inhibitors in the inflammation drug discovery pipelines (86). Although PI3Kδ remains undoubtedly an attractive target for immune disease therapy, the subsequent studies of CAL-101 in B-cell malignancies have established drugs of this class as an exciting new ...

The book tended to cycle through four main ways of explaining reasons behind why girls act the way they do; scientific experiments with lots of complicated sounding terms and processes, stories of the authors experiences as well as those of her patients, and studies/experiments. I tend to not even be able to focus on terms that sound too scientific while doing any sort of reading, so Im not going to lie and say that my eyes didnt glaze over when I read giant paragraphs with just scientific words like vasopressin and androstenedione and allopregnanolone. However, I think that the scientific explanations were essential, otherwise the author would have lost a lot of credibility. So Ill forgive her. Also, the patient stories often were conveniently sandwiched between the scienc-y stuff, so it was like reading a novel (thus, bearable). ...

Going down the story-line a bit further - Dr. O is known a procedure called Prolotherapy. Its a sugar-water injection into the joint. Read the link. At the time I was having insane headaches almost every week. I did not describe them as a Migraine specifically because I always believed migraines made the person sick to their stomach and I just felt like my head was going to combust. I was mostly functional except for one time that just broke the camels back. It felt like some claws were gripping the base of my neck and wrapping their fingers around the back of my skull. I orginally had an appointment to try the prolotherapy on my hands they hurt so bad,b ut after that weekend I changed my session to my neck and shoulders. This can take up to 4-5 procedures to get a result by the way. The photo looks gruesome but believe me, it didnt hurt that bad. Felt like I had strained some muscles for a couple days, thats it. Without going into Prolotherapy too much, overall, I did this twice so far and ...

Almost instantly, my shoulders drop in relaxation, my face relaxes and a quiet sigh emanates from my very being. I lean over the huge soaker tub and turn on the scalding water, pull the stopper to activate the spray wand and give the tub a good rinse. After adjusting the water temp to just good-n-hot, I turn the knob that plugs the tub, pour in one of my assortment of bath salts, gels, or soaking bubbles and watch eagerly as the water instantly foams up. Turns out, mind over matter only takes you so far. Seven years ago, I began to have trouble walking. My balance became erratic. I lost sensation in my feet and miscellaneous reflexes disappeared. I went to doctors, orthopedic hot shots. All of them said I need a new spinal fusion, the old one having fallen apart over the long years. Diagnosis: Horrible spine. Its weird. It makes me think of the fact that high school is technically more than half over. Im so excited for college, but the fact that the structure that comes with K-12 schooling is going to cease to exist for us in less than a hundred days scares the crap out of me. Yes we have more freedom to choose our classes and whatnot in high school, but were still babied, and adults still hold our hands through everything. Most are friends with the people theyve known since they were in elementary in middle school. When college starts, some of us are going to be in Minnesota still (me). Some are going to be in Iowa, or Wisconsin, or Michigan. Heck, some people wont even be in this country anymore. I just. Dragonflies hummed about, the sun glinting off their metallic bodies and shining through their lace wings. The water skeeters would skate about on the surface, their legs leaving tiny dimples in the water. The "seaweed" that grew on the bottom rippled in the current and was lush and green, every year it would bloom with tiny white flowers. I used to drape it over my head for mermaid hair. It always smelled wet and green, but oh so good. As fall arrived and the cat tails ripened, we would gather the catkins and burst them by hitting them onto the road, they would explode in great silken puffs that swirled in the slightest breeze. Soon the fluff would be everywhere, clinging to clothes, up noses, in eyes, but they were so soft...and extremely flammable. My brother and I would steal the matches and lay out great swathes of the fluff and then quickly light and throw a match on it. It was instant ignition and with a great WHOOFFF and an instant of searing heat, it would all be gone. Were quite lucky ...

Opening The Laboratory Door: National and International Legal Responsibilities for the Use of Animals in Scientific Research-- An Australian Perspective † Katrina Sharman * One of the greatest delusions in the world is the hope that the evils in this world are to be cured by legislation. Thomas Brackett Reed (1839-1902) When I first set out to write this article in the Spring of 2004, I sought to explore how the lives of laboratory animals could be improved within a legal system that classifies them as property, with no rights and no fundamental interests. I thought then (and think now) that the use of animals in scientific research is one of the hardest issues to write about in animal law. As advocates for the voiceless, we are torn between striving for a system that prohibits the use of animals for scientific purposes and recognising that liberation from the laboratory may be a long time coming. Despite the ethical objections that advocates such as myself have towards the use of animals in ...
Advanced laboratory facilities support the Centers two scientific teams: Building Energy Efficiency and Solar Photovoltaic Modules and also benefit of CSEs industry and higher education research partners. These include durability and material testing laboratories for building products and integrated building systems testing. The ability to deploy and evaluate these systems in an actual operating building creates a unique opportunity for in-depth research. The goal is to reduce the buildings energy usage by over 50% against previous baselines. Some of the building industrys leading systems and materials are being used in the building and will be evaluated over time. Recommendations and further research and testing based on the findings will support future improvement goals in the industry. Energy consumption, long-term durability and user comfort are all key components of the evaluations.. One of the buildings experimental retrofits include the installation of a variety of building ...

We present a forward-modeling simulation framework designed to model the data products from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). This forward-model process can be thought of as a transfer function-amapping from cosmological/ astronomical signals to the final data products used by the scientists.Using output from the cosmological simulations (the Blind Cosmology Challenge), we generate simulated images (the Ultra Fast Image Simulator) and catalogs representative of the DES data. In this work we demonstrate the framework by simulating the 244 deg2 coadd images and catalogs in five bands for the DES Science Verification data. The simulation output is compared with the corresponding data to show that major characteristics of the images and catalogs can be captured. We also point out several directions of future improvements. Two practical examples-star-galaxy classification and proximity effects on object detection-are then used to illustrate how one can use the simulations to address systematics issues in ...
The Wet Laboratory is a chemical-free laboratory space containing a large, closed indoor saltwater aquarium (~20,000L re-circulating system) as well as bench space, laboratory sinks and two large dissection tables immediately outside the laboratory. Bench space can be utilised for either salt or freshwater tanks requiring isolation from the main aquarium system. The main system has three large tanks (1,000, 4,000 and a 12,000L tanks). In addition, three racks can house up to 12 standard tanks per rack. Racks can be dismantled and replaced by two 400L round or 2 x 1,000L oval tanks or other tanks as required. A 1,000L self-contained aquarium is also available and can be either isolated or connected to the main system.. Water of a high quality is maintained through regular water changes (salt water pumped from Moreton Bay) and daily water quality monitoring. Staff provide researchers and groups with assistance in housing, caring and feeding of research animals.. ...
My PhD was concerned with the detection and alleviation of pain and distress in laboratory rodents, predominately focussing on post-operative pain. I used manual and automated behavioural scoring methods alongside nociceptive and anxiety testing methods in order to gain knowledge of the pain and distress surgery may cause to laboratory rodents. The overall objective of this project was in order to identify suitable analgesic regimes to employ for rodents undergoing surgical procedures thus improving the welfare of rodents used in various aspects of medical research.. Previous work focused on determining if mice used in cancer research experience pain, and if so, to determine when this occurs and its severity. Using automated behaviour analysis alongside conditioned place preference and nociceptive testing we hope to identify specifically when pain does present in order to refine end points for studies and improve welfare.. Current work involves investigating early detection of health and welfare ...
What is society? I have answered: Society is imitation"[1]. Gabriel Tarde The text you are about to read accompanies an artistic research project that belongs to a wider investigation into the complex field of relations between theoretical and artistic production. Thus it seems necessary to clarify its status in relation to the works of art produced during the research process. When the American chemist Homer Adkins states, that "basic research is like shooting an arrow in the air, and, where it lands, painting a target"[2], the importance of action within a field of serendipity in relationship to the capability to contextualise potential outcomes is clarified. If we translate this statement in order to understand what research could mean in the area of the arts, arrow and bow are not just any off-the-shelf items, but they have been carefully carved out of a myriad of stylistic and technological possibilities through continuous practice over time, involving numerous institutions, from art ...
It was serendipity, actually; a happy, accidental discovery.. The basic crystal structure were using for these pigments was known before, but no one had ever considered using it for any commercial purpose, including pigments.. Ever since the early Egyptians developed some of the first blue pigments, the pigment industry has been struggling to address problems with safety, toxicity and durability.". ...

Mom, whats for lunch?" Startled, I looked up the clock to see it was just 10 minutes to our lunch time. I was deeply immersed in some cleaning chore and had lost count of time. So here I was with a bowl of boiled sprouted peas and some steamed rice. I had 10 minutes to turn these into lunch! I work best under pressure. (I mean, when -time-is-running-short kind of pressure, and not the boss-down-my-neck kind of pressure) The sundal I assembled proved this right! A bowl of yummy goodness was the result. The side dish worked well with chilled curd rice. So why serendipity? I was searching for an idea for a quick side dish and wound up with this filling, tasty, nourishing dish ...

1. The parenteral administration of Tween 20 to several species of animals has been investigated. Injections of five per cent solutions subcutaneously and intramuscularly are well tolerated by the monkey. Intravenous injections produce transient depressor responses in all species of laboratory animals tested (except the dog) when given in small doses. Larger doses produce coma and death.. Tween 20 is hemolytic to red cells in concentrations of 100 mg. per cent within 90 minutes in vitro.. 2. Tweens 20, 40, 60 and 80 produce in the dog a deep and protracted fall in blood pressure.. 3. The depressor response appears to be due to the release of histamine or histamine-like substances which act upon the capillary bed.. 4. This allergic depressor response is not elicited in the rat, guinea pig, cat, rabbit, Macacus rhesus monkey, chicken or man.. 5. To 4 hospitalized patients 2 to 8 cc. of Tween 20, 5 per cent solution, has been given intravenously. There were no discernible deleterious ...
