You can blame it on "Dr. Google" and do nothing, or you can understand the real reasons and make the necessary changes. Pet-owners whose pets are terrified of a veterinary visit wont bring them in for anything but the worst, forcing you to miss out on essential well-pet care that improves and extends a high quality of life for the pet and the owner. Creating Fear Free veterinary visits is a simple, straightforward way to ease the stress and turn both pet and pet-owner into relaxed, happy, repeat visitors. Laboratory animal allergy (LAA) is an occupational disease of laboratory animal technicians and scientists. It manifests as an allergic response to animal urine, specifically the major urinary proteins (Mups) of rodents, and can lead to the development of asthma. A study of 5641 workers in Japan who were exposed to laboratory animals found 23.1% had one or more allergic symptoms; globally the prevalence among at risk workers is estimated between 11 and 30% According to the National Institutes of Health, prevention of animal allergy depends on the control of allergens in the work environment. This involves a combination of measures to eliminate or control allergen exposure, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment. The protein product of the mouse Mup17 gene, known as Mus m 1, Ag1 or MA1, accounts for much of the allergenic properties of mouse urine. Similarly, the product of the rat Mup13 gene, Rat n 1, is also a potent human allergen. One study ...

Laboratory animal allergy is a serious health problem. We examined several possible allergen-reducing strategies that might be effective in the working mouse room. Ambient allergen concentrations were measured when mice were maintained under several conditions: conventional housing versus ventilated cage racks operated under negative or positive pressure. We found that housing mice in ventilated cages operated under negative pressure and using ventilated changing tables reduced ambient mouse allergen (Mus m 1) concentrations tenfold, compared with values when mice were housed in conventional caging and using a conventional (non-ventilated) changing table. Housing mice in positively pressurized cages versus conventional cages did not reduce ambient allergen values. Cleaning mouse rooms at an accelerated frequency also did not reduce ambient Mus m 1 concentration. We also quantified ambient allergen values in several areas of The Jackson Laboratory. A facility-wide survey of Mus m 1
